Apple bashing, while sometimes fun, could be seen by some as poor taste. I can jive with that. But then there’s this. An ad spot from the Taiwanese manufacturer Action Electronics portraying the late Steve Jobs as an angelic Asian character who, set free from the confines of Apple, is finally able to choose an Android tablet — the Action Pad specifically — over the iPad. Now, I get that humor doesn’t translate so well from country to country, but this could be seen as downright offending. And not only to the Jobs family, but to Android users alike.
An Action Electronics spokeswoman defended the ad saying,
“Steve Jobs always promoted things that were good for people, Apple products, so his image can also promote other things that are good.”
Not that I would even attempt to speak for the late Steve Jobs (he was one hell of an orator) but c’mon… he wouldn’t touch that horrible example of an Android tablet with a 10ft pole. And neither would we.
As far as the ad goes, what do you guys think? Offensive? Or are we being too sensitive?

You may remember from a previous post that because of change in Sprint’s terms, some Sprint customers were able to get out of their contracts early. Well, following that news, it seems Sprint is making moves to keep “upgrade eligible” customers from leaving by offering up discounts anywhere from $25, $50, to $100, all for remaining loyal to ‘Ol Yeller. While we’re not exactly sure of the criteria Sprint is using to select these lucky customers, (how many months do you need to be off-contract?), we find it interesting the timing of the promotion, where customers who’s contracts were affected by Sprint’s change in discounts gives them until the end of February to cancel ETF free.
Those that don’t have any intention of leaving may be able to cash in on this new promo, which when combined with an existing upgrade, offers a substantial discount on a new device. The offer begins Feb. 5th and will last until March 18th. Now might be a good time to call customer service to see if you apply. Keep in mind, taking advantage of Sprint’s promo offer will lock you in for another 2-years so choose your device wisely.

New to the official Google Store are the all new Android wristwatches to better show the world your undying devotion for Google’s green robot. Coming in at $60, if the price sounds a bit steep for you, keep in mind that you’re receiving 2 custom straps — both dark and light color — in either small or large face watch sizes. At the time of writing, the larges seem to be sold out and no telling when they’ll return but now you know they’re there and can keep an eye out for them.
Google’s specialty store always keeps me coming back for more and after buying a $60 Android cookie jar not too long ago, I think I’m better off staying away for the time being. “Hi, I’m Chris and I’m addicted to Android memorabilia.”

Originally released for iOS back in July of ’09, Cartoon Wars is finally hitting the Android Market today, courtesy of Gamevil who is offering the game free of charge. Mixing a healthy dose of tower defense and a sidescrolling RTS, Cartoon Wars gives players control of a small army where the player must carefully choose the units he/she will use when going into battle against the opposing force.

If you like a little story with your RTS’ing, it goes a little something like this:
Two tribes existed in the Cartoon World; the vicious Color Tribe and their slaves, the Black and White Cartoon Tribe.
For generations the Black and White Cartoon Tribe were treated as property, and forced into slavery.
Fortunately… some with bigger ideas existed amongst them.
They gathered and began a revolt to free themselves, taking the battle to the Color Tribe.
The inevitable war has begun… become the hero of the Black and White Cartoons and set your people free.
Already receiving rave reviews in both the Market (and App Store), Cartoon Wars treats players with all out, balls out, action packed battles, while still offering a surprising amount of depth. You find the app for free right now in the Android Market. Once you give a try, let me what you guys think.

Bamboo is a very useful wood. It can be used for all sorts of things. You can use it to build houses, scaffolding and even feed it to pandas. Another new use has sprung up – you can use it as the chassis for a phone. The device you see above was once a mere concept by Middlesex student Kieron-Scott Woodhouse. (That’s about as fitting a last name as you could have for this project.)

Its name is the AdZero and it’s made out of real bamboo. Each phone’s block of wood is naturally unique. The woody nature contributes to how light it is with TechCrunch saying it weighs half as much as an iPhone 4S. There are questions about the lifetime of the finish.
As it’s wood you can expect it to look a bit worse over time but there will likely be protective coating. I wouldn’t mind a sheet of glass covering it, personally.
The device has recently received interest from investors who want to see these things in the hands of everyone in China and production looks to be on track to begin this year.
It’ll be running Android but the OS version wasn’t mentioned. I could see this being a great device to apply a custom wood theme to but it’s not clear where they’ll go in that regard. At this point we’re not even sure who “they” are but we hope they’re serious about bringing something like this to the masses. I know I’d want to carry one. [TechCrunch]

If you want to take a look be sure to download the source at Samsung’s site via the link ahead. [Source, Via]

Google has updated another one of their applications today. This time, it’s Chrome to Phone, an application that gets extensive use out of me. The application allows users to send webpages that they’re viewing on Chrome to their Android devices that have the application installed. My main use for it has been to send maps and directions to my device before I leave to go to a place I don’t know.
The new update fixes an error that caused the app to crash on Honeycomb devices. Google has also added landscape support and an improved look and feel. A solid update, all in all. Find it here in the Android market. [via Android Police]

The Galaxy Nexus, like its predecessors, is headed to just about every carrier imaginable outside the United States and the PAYG  Canadian alternative WIND Mobile is next in line. They’re set to release the device this Friday, February 3rd, for $250 for WINDTab+ customers (cost of the rest of the device is figured into your monthly bill over a three-year contract) and $600 outright.

For those considering switching, WIND customers currently enjoy great rates such as their unlimited everything plan for just $40. It’s a viable option if you prefer to go with a smaller carrier to save money – the phone they’re offering in a couple of days isn’t a bad one, either. Read on for full press details.

"Our customers are always on the lookout for the newest technology and we’re proud to add these state-of-the-art smartphones to our offering and pair them with plans that allow customers to make the most of all their features," said Anthony Lacavera, Chairman and CEO of WIND Mobile.
As the first smartphone to feature a 4.65’’ display with a market-leading resolution of 720p, the Galaxy Nexus ensures superior clarity for entertainment capabilities, fast web browsing, and high-definition gaming and video streaming with its 1.2GHz dual core processor.  The Ice Cream Sandwich operating system introduces innovations such as Face Unlock which uses facial recognition to unlock the device. Other innovations include NFC technology with Android Beam which allows for the rapid sharing of web pages, apps, and online videos by simply tapping two devices together.
With a super-slim form factor and superior battery life, the BlackBerry Bold 9790 delivers non-stop BlackBerry 7 OS power in a barely-there design. Featuring a 1 GHz processor, 768 MB RAM and 8 GB of onboard memory, this new BlackBerry lets users take care of business faster than ever before.

The good folks at Google have just updated Google Docs for Android. The document editing application had a big crutch in its inability to work offline but that is all changed now. Google has added an offline mode in the latest version. You have to select individual documents to make available offline but that shouldn’t be a problem for most. Your changes offline will be made to the online version as soon as you’re back on a network so you won’t have to remember to do it manually (though you can do it manually if you want). They’ve also made the viewing experience better on Android tablets by presenting the documents and controls in high quality. Three megabytes and a few seconds will get you the update in the Android market here. [via Google+]

We’re expecting the Motorola Droid 4 to be launched shortly after its official unveiling at CES but it’s been difficult to pinpoint an exact date. Take this one with a grain of salt, however – Droid-Life is hearing from a source that the 4 inch stretching, LTE having, dual-core pushing, keyboard-laden device will launch February 9th. That’s only a short 8 days from now. Pricing is expected to be either $200 or $300 but we’d expect the latter considering all the features packed inside. Has anyone been holding out for this one?

US Cellular gave us a rough timeline of their 4G LTE device launches last month, pegging a tablet for March and a smartphone to follow in April. The regional carrier has announced exactly which devices we can expect: the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Samsung Galaxy S Aviator (a device appearing to be a rebranded Droid Charge). The timeframe remains the same, with the Galaxy Tab landing in March and the Galaxy S Aviator landing the following month. Specific dates and exact pricing have yet to be announced. Check out the press release below for more details.

U.S. CELLULAR ANNOUNCES LAUNCH OF 4G LTE NETWORK NEXT MONTH ALONG WITH UPCOMING DEVICES
Brings up to 10 times faster download speeds and better web browsing experience
CHICAGO (Feb. 1, 2012) - U.S. Cellular, in conjunction with its partner, King Street Wireless, is launching a 4G LTE network next month that will enhance the wireless experience with countless entertainment possibilities and help customers simplify and organize their lives. The 4G LTE network will cover 25 percent of U.S. Cellular’s customers and will coincide with the launch of the Android-powered Samsung Galaxy Tab™ 10.1 4G LTE mobile tablet followed shortly by the Samsung Galaxy S® Aviator™ 4G LTE smartphone.
4G LTE speeds allow customers to begin watching a movie in seconds and enjoy smoother video streaming with little to no buffering, and video chatting with family or business colleagues is seamless.
With the Samsung Galaxy S® Aviator™, customers have the ability to talk and access the Internet at the same time. They can talk to their family about dinner plans while downloading an app to find nearby restaurants and simultaneously check out reviews online.
The March rollout of 4G LTE includes select cities in Iowa, Wisconsin, Maine, North Carolina, Texas and Oklahoma, including some of U.S. Cellular’s leading markets such as Milwaukee, Madison and Racine, Wis.; Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Davenport, Iowa; Portland and Bangor, Maine; and Greenville, N.C. U.S. Cellular is the first wireless carrier to offer 4G LTE in several of these markets. The next wave of market launches will be announced later this month.
“With 4G LTE speeds, you can quickly get what you want when you need it,” said Mary N. Dillon, president and CEO of U.S. Cellular. “This 4G LTE network builds upon our industry-leading network satisfaction and is the only one that comes with a valuable rewards program and other unique benefits like Overage Protection and Battery Swap that make our customers the happiest in wireless.”
The Samsung Galaxy Tab™ 10.1 is powered by Android 3.2 (Honeycomb) and has a 10.1-inch WXGA TFT touchscreen. It features superior multi-tasking capabilities, a video watching experience similar to TV and smooth graphics and responsive controls for faster gaming. Apps are downloaded faster on the sleek Samsung Galaxy S® Aviator™ smartphone that comes with Android 2.3.6 (Gingerbread). It has a 4.3-inch WVGA s-AMOLED plus touchscreen, 8 megapixel rear camera and front-facing camera for easy video chatting. Both devices will provide download and browser speeds that are up to 10 times faster than 3G and be similar to a cable Internet connection.
The 4G LTE network builds on the 3G data services that U.S. Cellular customers already enjoy on the carrier’s high-quality nationwide network. U.S. Cellular has the highest call quality and network satisfaction of any national carrier. For more information about the 4G LTE experience, visit uscellular.com/4G.

What you see above is Samsung’s teaser for their Super Bowl ad. The clip is comprised mostly of segments from previous ads from Samsung’s most recent round of TV spots featuring the commentary of folks waiting in line for what is suggested to be the next iPhone. Of course, Samsung wants to tout that the next big thing is already here in the form of their gargantuan Galaxy Note. Will a full 90-second ad capture the hearts of Americans everywhere during the fourth quarter of the showdown in Indianapolis? Perhaps the bigger questions is: since when do company’s advertise for their own advertisements?

Apple has long been the target of criticism over their labor practices, specifically, at overseas factories like Foxconn where harsh working conditions, accidents and suicide rates for Chinese laborers working in these factories have all made headline. Foxconn even had to go as far as installing safety nets along the sides of their buildings to help thwart would-be jumpers. A few months ago, there was also an app “game,” later pulled from the App Store, attempting to shed light on this issue, only to eventually find itself land in the Android Market, where it currently remains.
After news that Apple was sitting on a $97 billion cash pile, twiddling their thumbs, a renewed effort is being led by Apple “fanboys” no less, who have taken to online petitions to raise even more awareness. The hopes are that Apple will use some of this money to force suppliers like Foxconn into improving their working conditions. But as so often is the case, that’s easier said than done.
The thing is, it’s not only Apple who uses Foxconn to make their products. That shiny new Kindle Fire you received for Christmas — guess what? It was built in a Foxconn factory just like the iPad 2. It’s true. Many of your favorite Android OEM’s (and even console manufacturers) are current Foxconn employers. To show you Apple isn’t alone in this, here’s a list of a few of them, 10 of which are US based, and mixed in with other big name manufacturers.
  • Acer Inc. (Taiwan)
  • Amazon.com (United States)
  • Asus (Taiwan)
  • Barnes & Noble (United States)
  • Dell (United States)
  • Hewlett-Packard (United States)
  • Intel (United States)
  • IBM (United States)
  • Lenovo (China)
  • Logitech (Switzerland)
  • Microsoft (United States)
  • MSI (Taiwan)
  • Motorola (United States)
  • Netgear (United States)
  • Nintendo (Japan)
  • Nokia (Finland)
  • Panasonic (Japan)
  • Philips (Netherlands)
  • Samsung (South Korea)
  • Sharp (Japan)
  • Sony Ericsson (Japan/Sweden)
  • Toshiba (Japan)
  • Vizio (United States)
And while it can be argued that Apple is a much more grueling task master, I think it’s safe to say the rest of these OEM’s aren’t really helping matters either. Keep in mind I’m not saying we should all run out and grab our picket signs but I just felt it was interesting that people seemingly hold Apple to some sort of  “higher standard” than other big name companies like Nintendo or Motorola. Is it fair? Not really. Is there a need for change? 100% yes. Can Apple do it alone? Probably not.
Back in the day, apparel companies like Nike were forced to improve their labor conditions after public outcry and I can only hope these online petitions will catch the attention of Android OEM’s as well. Something needs to be done to improve working conditions for the factory workers at Foxconn and my heart most certainly goes out to them. Since most Android users already boycott Apple products out of devotion to all things Google, you can still further help by signing the online petitions linked below. It’s your duty as a world citizen (yep, I just went there).
Thanks, Noonehereyet!
