Google acquires Android performance optimizer FlexyCore in $23 Million deal
Oct 22nd 2013, 16:46, by Jeff Causey

Google has acquired FlexyCore in a deal valued at $23 Million in a move to accelerate efforts to optimize the Android platform to not only run smoother, but better as well. FlexyCore produced an Android accelerator called droidBooster that claimed to improve performance by a factor of ten. This was achieved by optimizing ARM binaries at build-time. Apparently the results were impressive enough that Google decided they wanted that knowledge base in house noting that FlexyCore’s “strong expertise in building software to optimize Android device performance” would fit in nicely at Google.

According to reports, the deal was struck a year ago, but was just now completed this month. Google has been touting the new Android 4.4 as making “an amazing Android experience available for everybody.” It is possible some of FlexyCore’s work has already made its way into the Android ecosystem, which is why Google thinks they can bring KitKat’s improvements to more devices compared to previous releases.

What's That? WhatsApp hits 350 million monthly active users
Oct 22nd 2013, 16:00, by Kris Carlon

Last week we were happy with ourselves for getting over 20,000 Likes on our Facebook page, but this is another dimension of popularity entirely: WhatsApp has just hit 350 million monthly active users. That's more than fifteen times the population of my country (Australia), but still less than half the active monthly users of Facebook. Considering Facebook is an entire social network and WhatsApp is simply a messaging service, that's not a bad turnout.

AT&T LTE compatible device shows up in FCC filing, looks like HTC One Max
Oct 22nd 2013, 15:51, by Jeff Causey

htc_one_max_att_fcc_image

A couple days ago we reported on a leaked image that suggested the HTC One Max might be on its way to AT&T, joining Sprint and Verizon as carriers with the super-sized smartphone in their portfolio. Now a new filing at the FCC has surfaced that seems to make that much more likely. An HTC handset with model number OP3P500 is in the FCC database with information indicating support for LTE band 17, which would make it compatible with AT&T. Although a model name is not provided, the number listed is very close to the international version’s model number of OP3P510.

We still do not have any kind of pricing or availability information, although the leaked render mentioned earlier had a date of Nov. 1st on the screen. Screen image dates have been used in the past to determine possible release dates, but HTC has stated in the past they were going to start being a little more sneaky to throw off rumors. Seeing the device surface at the FCC and knowing HTC would probably like to have the device available for the holiday shopping season makes it seem likely the release is imminent.

Verizon Moto X soak test update starts rolling out
Oct 22nd 2013, 15:20, by Quentyn Kennemer

verizon moto x update

We’d heard Verizon users were being invited to a soak test for a new Motorola X upgrade, and now that test is rolling out to those who have decided to participate. We’re looking at version 159.15.1.en.US, which will bring about the following changes:

  • Improved photos (color accuracy, exposure, focus speed)
  • Increased accuracy of Touchless Controls
  • Fixed choppy audio issue during voice calls
  • Fixed issue with Motorola Assist improperly reading out texts
  • Improved Motorola Migrate Experience
  • Added 30-day expiration date for 50GB Google Drive offer
  • Fixed an issue that could sometimes prevent a lost phone from reporting its location to the Moto Care Lost Device Finder service

We’re not sure how big this update clocks in at, but it’s always a good idea to get onto a WiFi connection and charge your battery to 30-50% to make sure things go smoothly. If you’re not in the soak test, don’t worry — Motorola usually starts pushing these things out to the rest of the herd just days later. Let us know if you were able to pull the update down, and if any of the above fixes have improved the overall experience for you!

Motorola, as it's done for the other carriers, has released the full changelog for the most recent update to Verizon's Moto X. The camera improvements are the big strokes, of course, but there's a good bit more to the update.

Here's what's new in version 139.15.1:

HTC One max FCC filing tips AT&T release
Oct 22nd 2013, 14:31, by Robert Nelson

HTC officially unveiled the One max earlier in the month and since then we have seen confirmation from Verizon Wireless in terms of an upcoming release. While we have yet to see anything official from AT&T, there has been some leaks suggesting they would also have the handset joining the lineup. And well, it looks like some additional evidence has arrived in support of those previously leaked AT&T One max images.

htc_one_max_review_ac_191-540x303

This latest is coming by way of the FCC. A filing has been discovered that shows the handset with support for AT&T LTE. Specifically, support for LTE band 17, which points towards AT&T. The filing was for a handset with a model number of OP3P500, which while sort of generic sounding — is a play off the international OP3P510 model number.

htc-one-max-att-fcc

Aside from this brief suggestion of support for AT&T LTE, the filing was rather light on the details. Of course, there wasn’t anything in terms of timeline. Not to mention, there wasn’t anything that specifically mentioned the handset was even coming to the carrier. Basically, this just adds a further bit of evidence to that earlier leak.

As far as Verizon Wireless goes, while they did offer confirmation of a release, they were light on the details. Big Red originally posted the details on the @VZNews Twitter account. The message said the handset was coming “this holiday season” and otherwise, all we have seen was the launch of a coming soon style teaser page on the Verizon website.

BBM for Android; how to jump the waiting list
Oct 22nd 2013, 14:05, by Robert Nelson

Blackberry finally launched BBM for Android yesterday, though that didn’t mean everyone was able to begin chatting immediately. Perhaps in an effort to scale the launch, BlackBerry has released the BBM app, but has users sitting in a waiting list for an invitation to actually begin using it. The reason for a controlled launch makes sense, however we also understand that people are not always keen on waiting.

Screenshot_2013-10-21-13-54-06-L-540x532

That being said, the folks at CNET have discovered a simple workaround that should mean instant access — should you still want your BBM PIN. The process is actually pretty simple, download and install BBM from the Google Play Store. From here enter your email address, click Next and then force-close the app.

On Android that means heading to Settings -> Apps -> BBM and clicking Force Close. Once done with this part, relaunch BBM and you should get the required PIN assigned to you. Now for the catch, BlackBerry could catch on and close this loophole. And in addition, we have seen some mixed reports in terms of success.

Tricks aside, we should also point out that BlackBerry has begun sending out invites already. We first registered a personal email address yesterday morning after installing the app from the Play Store. Since then, an invite has shown up for that address — with a catch. We discovered that email in our spam folder. Or in other words, if you registered for BBM using a Gmail account you may want to be looking in your inbox and spam folder, just in case.

DroidBooster Android accelerator app acquired by Google
Oct 22nd 2013, 13:35, by Robert Nelson

Google may have brought some smoothness to Android with Project Butter, however a new acquisition has it looking like they are still looking to make some further improvements. According to reports coming from the French-language L’Expansion, Google has acquired the DroidBooster app from FlexyCore. Details point towards this being a €16.9 million ($23.1 million) acquisition.

Android-KitKat1-540x3601

While Google hasn’t offered anything in terms of the pricing, there was confirmation on the acquisition itself. In a statement provided to GigaOm, Google offered the following;

“The FlexyCore team has strong expertise in building software to optimize Android device performance, and we think they’d be a great fit with our team.”

Otherwise, the deeper plans that Google may have remain a mystery. That does open the door for some speculation, but it seems to be fairly simple at this point. Google looks to have grabbed FlexyCore to bring further improvements to Android. Maybe something along the lines of Project Butter Part 2.

Anyway, while this is all being confirmed and acknowledged now, the deal has actually been in the works for some time. In fact, it looks like this process was all set in motion more than a year ago. And to further that, the deal was said to have been concluded earlier this month. Maybe Android users will see some of the perks when Kit Kat gets an official unveil.
