Never lose your keys again with HTC Fetch
Aug 6th 2013, 17:27, by Bogdan Petrovan

 htc fetch

How many times did you wish you could just call your keys or wallet the way you would when you misplaced your phone? Well, you can do just that with HTC Fetch, a little Bluetooth-enabled tag that just went up for preorder on the site of UK-based retailer Clove.

So, how does the aptly named Fetch work? The gizmo, which looks just like a key fob that you can put it your wallet, or attach to your bag or keys, connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth. Whenever the tag, along with the item to which it's attached, goes beyond 15 meters from your phone, the tag emits a loud alert, that should, in theory, tell you that you were about to lose your stuff.

If you happen to be in a loud environment or if you don't hear the alarm for some other reason, you can consult the last GPS location of the Fetch on Google Maps. The gizmo takes these coordinates from the smartphone, meaning that it doesn't contain a GPS module itself, and that you have to use the GPS on your phone for this function to work.

If you simply misplaced your keys around the house, you can use a smartphone app to activate the alarm manually, which sounds like a brilliant functionality that many people would love.

The Fetch also features a button with which you can activate the camera shutter on your phone, turning it into a simple remote control. For power, the small device uses a CR2032 battery, that is said to be enough for six months of operation.

The HTC Fetch BL A100 device can be preordered now from Clove for the rather reasonable price of £30. Not all details are known yet, but we'll sure bring them to you as soon as we have them.

Intel releases pair of "education tablets" designed to meet students' needs
Aug 6th 2013, 16:38, by Jeff Causey

intel_education_tablets_01

Intel has announced the availability of a pair of tablets, one 7-inch and one 10-inch, that were designed specifically for meeting the needs of students and educators. The Intel Education Tablets come with software intended to help students complete projects, read their assignments, and even perform experiments. The 10-inch tablet will also come with additional hardware including a plug-in thermal probe and a snap-on magnification lens. Intel is hoping to get the devices into classrooms as more school systems transition to more digital content delivery and learning.

Intel is including a suite of software that will come preloaded on the tablets. For students, some of the titles include Kno Interactive eReader, PASCO SPARKvue Science, My Notes Keeper, and ArtRage. If the tablet is being used by a teach or other educator, they will have access to a classroom management app. Intel is even trying to help out IT administrators by including anti-virus software and theft-deterrent apps.

The 10-inch tablet will come loaded with Android 4.0 running on an Intel Atom processor clocked at 1.6GHz, 1GB of RAM, a 1280×800 TFT LCD screen, a rear-facing 2MP camera and a front-facing 0.3MP camera. The 7-inch tablet carries a 1.2GHz Intel Atom processor, a 1024×600 TFT LCD screen, and 1 GB of RAM running Android 4.1.

As you may note, the hardware specs for the devices are not the greatest. It seems likely Intel intends to sell these at a low price point directly to school systems. Apple recently inked a deal with the Los Angeles school system to provide iPads to all students, but that deal has been met with skepticism and some outright challenges over the cost. So there could be a market for Intel’s devices, especially in areas where budgets are especially tight.

If your local school system was going to distribute tablet devices to all students, would you want them to look at these Intel Education Tablets as a possible solution?

Back-image of Galaxy Note 3 leaks, shows battery and dual-SIM for Chinese variant

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_3_Battery_Dual_Sim

It feels as though we’ve heard everything about the upcoming Galaxy Note 3 phablet already including benchmarks, internals, camera samples, full prototype images, and even a rumored September 4 unveiling date.

Now, it looks like we have another picture on our hands, this time of the back of the device, showing off its battery and two-SIM slots. (It’s the Chinese variant.)

It’s hard to make out the battery capacity in the picture, however when considering the battery capacity on the first two Notes and the hardware that will be included in the Note 3, it would make sense to see a battery capacity of about 3,500mAh. Time will tell, but we pretty much already know that this phone is going to be an absolute beast.

Samsung and AT&T will offer one-time replacement of water damaged Galaxy S 4 Actives

Samsung_Galaxy_S_4_Active

Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 Active, on paper, is an awesome concept; it’s a high-end device that’s waterproof and dust proof, and it even has a removable battery. In real world usage, though, the S 4 Active has struggled to live up to its marketing hype. Many users of the device have had problems with water damage in their phones, which should seem really, really weird for a waterproof device. The phone has IP67 certification, so it should be able to stay submersed in up to 3 feet of water for 30 minutes, but apparently real-world units just aren’t managing that.

The good news, though, is that even if the phone has some water damage, AT&T and Samsung are willing to offer a one-time replacement of the phones for another Galaxy S 4 Active. It’s definitely a show of good faith, but I think it would be better if they let customers switch to a different phone instead of a replacement phone that may or may not actually be waterproof. There’s no word on when these exchanges are going to start happening, but hopefully this entire situation doesn’t turn into a PR fiasco for Samsung.

Oppo_N-Lens_N1

We haven’t heard much about the upcoming Oppo N-Lens N1 phone, but it could end up being the next best thing to come to market in the camera-phone industry.

Pictures of the phone recently leaked, which suggest that the phone will come with Xenon flash and a 13-MP camera powered by an “Owl” image chip which contributes to better low-light shots.

The phone is expected to sell in China for $480 off-contract, which is pretty expensive for a Chinese phone. There aren’t too many other details about the phone, but you’ll certainly hear it from us when they come around.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 comes with built-in support for always-on voice recognition

Qualcomm-snapdragon-800-635

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 processor that’s slated to be put in just about every high end phone for the rest of the year has an easily overlooked feature that predates some of the touchless controls that have been gaining traction in the past few days thanks to the Moto X. In fact, since it was announced, the Snapdragon 800 had support to always-on voice activation on the CPU level. Not the undercut Motorola’s achievement on doing this with their impressive custom processor work, but it’s very likely we’ll start to see that voice activation hitting more phones this year as they start to hit shelves with a Snapdragon 800 inside.

We could see 128GB of internal phone storage in 2014 with 'stacked' V-NAND memory
Aug 6th 2013, 16:23, by Harrison Kaminsky

V-NAND_Samsung

Say goodbye to the days of having to decide on whether you want to purchase the 16 or 32 GB model of your device.

The same technology from the “stacked” 3D chips found in Intel’s new Haswell processors could be found in flash memory modules in flagship mobile phones by 2014, according to Samsung. The company has already stacked 24 ‘NAND’ modules on top of one another, which makes memory faster (and larger) than ever before experienced on a mobile device.

V-NAND chips start with 128 GB of memory and can go all the way up to 1 TB. The question of whether a phone has a micro-SD card slot will never be asked again!

You’re probably thinking that we’re years off from this reaching mobile phones— think again. Samsung has already sent out the technology to mobile phone makers to sample it, and reportedly is already prepared to produce them in mass quantities.

The V-NAND chips will most likely be found in SSD memory later this year, and will eventually make its way to the mobile device world by 2014. Sometimes we forget how fast technology is moving… Check out the presser after the break.

Samsung Starts Mass Producing Industry's First 3D Vertical NAND Flash
Samsung Electronics announced that it has begun mass producing the industry's first three-dimensional (3D) Vertical NAND (V-NAND) flash memory, which breaks through the current scaling limit for existing NAND flash technology. Achieving gains in performance and area ratio, the new 3D V-NAND will be used for a wide range of consumer electronics and enterprise applications, including embedded NAND storage and solid state drives (SSDs).
Samsung's new V-NAND offers a 128 gigabit (Gb) density in a single chip, utilizing the company's proprietary vertical cell structure based on 3D Charge Trap Flash (CTF) technology and vertical interconnect process technology to link the 3D cell array. By applying both of these technologies, Samsung's 3D V-NAND is able to provide over twice the scaling of 20nm-class* planar NAND flash.
For the past 40 years, conventional flash memory has been based on planar structures that make use of floating gates. As manufacturing process technology has proceeded to the 10nm-class* and beyond, concern for a scaling limit arose, due to the cell-to-cell interference that causes a trade-off in the reliability of NAND flash products. This also led to added development time and costs.

Samsung's new V-NAND solves such technical challenges by achieving new levels of innovation in circuits, structure and the manufacturing process through which a vertical stacking of planar cell layers for a new 3D structure has been successfully developed. To do this, Samsung revamped its CTF architecture, which was first developed in 2006. In Samsung's CTF-based NAND flash architecture, an electric charge is temporarily placed in a holding chamber of the non-conductive layer of flash that is composed of silicon nitride (SiN), instead of using a floating gate to prevent interference between neighboring cells.

By making this CTF layer three-dimensional, the reliability and speed of the NAND memory have improved sharply. The new 3D V-NAND shows not only an increase of a minimum of 2X to a maximum 10X higher reliability, but also twice the write performance over conventional 10nm-class floating gate NAND flash memory.

Also, one of the most important technological achievements of the new Samsung V-NAND is that the company's proprietary vertical interconnect process technology can stack as many as 24 cell layers vertically, using special etching technology that connects the layers electronically by punching holes from the highest layer to the bottom. With the new vertical structure, Samsung can enable higher density NAND flash memory products by increasing the 3D cell layers without having to continue planar scaling, which has become incredibly difficult to achieve. After nearly 10 years of research on 3D Vertical NAND, Samsung now has more than 300 patent-pending 3D memory technologies worldwide. With the industry's first completely functional 3D Vertical NAND memory, Samsung has strengthened its competitiveness in the memory industry as well as set the foundation for more advanced products including one terabit (Tb) NAND flash, while setting a faster pace for industry growth.According to IHS iSuppli, the global NAND flash memory market is expected to reach approximately US $30.8 billion in revenues by the end of 2016, from approximately US $23.6 billion in 2013 with a CAGR of 11 percent, in leading growth of the entire memory industry.

LG may roll out LG G2 on August 8th in South Korea
Aug 6th 2013, 16:12, by Jeff Causey

lg-optimus-g2

As the smartphone market prepares for the release of another flagship device, this time LG’s G2 smartphone, we have another example of how manufacturers are compressing the time between announcement and availability. LG will be holding an event in New York City tomorrow to unveil the new LG G2. Reports from Korean-based MK News indicate the new device will be in stores in that country on August 8th, only one day after the official reveal. That is consistent with previous rumors about the release schedule that put Korean availability soon after the phone was announced by LG.

According to reports, LG is planning to make the device available on 100 carriers worldwide within two to three months of the official release. This will supposedly include four major carriers in the U.S. – AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint.

TalkAndroid will be on the ground at the LG event tomorrow, so be sure to check back for all the details about LG’s new flagship device.

Many expressed distaste with Motorola's suggested retail price of $200 on a new two-year contract for the Moto X, but a few select lucky folks might be able to take another route to get this thing for quite cheap. And by cheap, I mean free.

Verizon's Moto X to launch Aug. 23 says leaked inventory screen
Aug 6th 2013, 17:08, by Jerry Hildenbrand

Moto X date

Leaked inventory screen points to stores receiving inventory on August 15, with an August 23 Street Date

We've heard nothing official from Verizon about when to expect their Moto X to hit the streets, but according to this picture of an inventory screen, August 23 is the day. Taken from a major retailer, we see that stock is set to arrive on August 15 with a "Street Date" of August 23, which puts it out three days after the Droid Ultra, MAXX and Mini. It's also the same date that was leaked in an earlier roadmap, so it has our attention.

There's no indication of pricing, though we expect it to be competitive with AT&T pricing at $199 for the 16GB version, with a new two-year contract.

Of course, this is not official and doesn't take into account anything like a carrier-store exclusive. It does, however, let us know that Verizon plans to get this one out the door relatively quickly — something folks waiting for the HTC One on Big Red wouldn't know anything about.

We're keeping our eyes and ears open for anything we can dig up about the Moto X, and will pass it along as it's uncovered.

Thanks, Anon!

Unlisted HTC video clip teases "Big Things Ahead"
Aug 6th 2013, 16:33, by Dima Aryeh

An unlisted teaser video titled “Big Things Ahead” has been posted to HTC’s YouTube channel along with a similar clip on Vine. “Big Things Ahead” could mean anything. HTC may be bragging about how they’re rising in the ranks again. Or they might be cleverly teasing the HTC One Max. Yesterday, we got to see a few shots of the rumored “phablet,” and it looks exciting.

We never see the face of the lead actor in the video, but we’re pretty damn sure it’s Robert Downey Jr. After rumors that HTC hired the actor to be their global smartphone ambassador, we’ve just been waiting for him to show up in an ad. Finally, we get to see the back of his head in this extremely short ad. We expect big things from HTC, especially their ads if Downey Jr has signed on to help promote HTC’s devices.

What would you like to see next from  HTC?

New HTC One Max picture shows how big it really is
Aug 6th 2013, 15:59, by Nick Gray

Since the HTC One Max is rumored to feature a 5.9-inch display in a chassis which closely resembles the HTC One, it’s very clear that the phone is going to be big – very big. The phone has not yet been announced by HTC, so we don’t have any official numbers on size, but a newly leaked image of the HTC One Max may be enough for us to approximate its size and compare its height to a few other Android devices.

The new image shows off the side of the HTC One Max with a Motorola XT882 placed on top of it for scale. The Motorola XT882 features a 4-inch display and is 122mm tall. With some rough pixel counting in Photoshop, we have estimated that the HTC One Max is 155mm tall. Considering that the HTC One is 137mm tall, the HTC One Max will definitely look and feel massive if you hold the two phones side by side. The size difference will be less obvious when paired up with the Samsung Galaxy Note II (151.1mm tall with a 5.5-inch display) and the HTC One Max will actually look and feel minuscule when compared to the Sony Xperia Z Ultra (179mm tall with a 6.5-inch display).

htc-one-max-size-chart

Is the HTC One Max too big or are these new massive phones the perfect size for those who don’t want to own a phone and a 7-inch tablet?
