Verizon Galaxy Nexus Jelly Bean upgrade coming up as JRO03O update?

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 02:31 AM PDT

galaxy nexus jelly bean

Yes, the Galaxy Nexus is a Nexus device that should receive all Android upgrades almost immediately after Google releases a new version. But no, that doesn't happen with all Galaxy Nexus versions out there, and we specifically mean Verizon and Sprint, as carriers have their own not-so-hidden agendas when it comes to releasing such updates in a timely manner.

While there's absolutely no official confirmation that the Verizon Galaxy Nexus Android 4.1 Jelly Bean build is ready to roll out, we can tell you that at least one user is apparently getting it as a build JRO03O, a 146.6MB download, which could be the highly anticipated Jelly Bean update.

The news comes from xda-developers where user El Madhatter says the following:

I received the system update notification (JRO03O) within the past hour [3:25 AM EST]. See [following] pic.

He also provides the image above, although no additional information is available at this time, and nobody else seems to have gotten it.

This could be just another soak test ahead of the release, so we're definitely waiting for more details from Verizon Galaxy Nexus users. Did you also get the JRO03O update notification?

Is Twitter edging out third-party mobile and desktop clients?

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 02:30 AM PDT

The beauty of social networking in an increasingly mobile world is that users are given a choice. You may have a Facebook or Twitter account, but you’re free to use third-party applications to access your data. This means you’re not limited to a crappy client with a clunky interface when there’s a better one. Popular social networks make sure their API supports third-party apps for the best user experience.

But while these companies offer third-party access to their data, there is sometimes a concern over control. Granting access over a third-party client will sometimes result in differing user experiences — and yes, this includes monetization potentials, too. As such, in view of keeping their earning potential intact, social networks will usually make tweaks and changes to their systems and APIs in order to keep users in closer check.

Twitter: no more linking to third-party clients (Image credit: Alex Kessinger)

Twitter recently made a few changes to its API that suggest it wants to keep users within its own clients. Twitter is also limiting the way other services can modify the display of tweets and streams, leading to a more standardized user experience. One of the newer changes is that Twitter no longer displays the source app or client that a user has posted on. So while we would previously see “via Seesmic” or “via Tweetbot,” the web interface no longer displays this information.

In short, tweets are now client-agnostic, as Matthew Panzarino writes at The Next Web. And so the question is whether Twitter is gradually edging out third-party clients. These links do promote third-party apps, after all. But perhaps Twitter only wants the highlight to be on the tweet, rather than where it came from.

Whatever the motivation, this only underscores the power of controlling the reader experience. Magazine-like social-reading apps like Zite and Flipboard are already growing popular, and perhaps Twitter wants to deliver a better user experience, even as its releases for different platforms — web, Android, iOS, mobile web — are likewise worlds apart in terms of UI. Twitter wants a consistent reading experience as it soldiers on to a billion users. Is it prepared to do this at the expense of developers?

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Good Guy Samsung gives free custom S3 to lucky Facebook fan in exchange for dragon drawing

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 02:21 AM PDT

Anyone familiar with the "Good Guy Greg" internet meme?  Well, we have a new good guy around, and it's one you might have never thought capable of doing such good deeds. Especially after being hammered by a jury and judge in its legal patent war against Apple.

That's right, it's Good Guy Samsung! Sammy has just given out a free custom one-of-a-kind Galaxy S3 to a Facebook fan that has only had to ask for the super-phone. It all started back May, when everybody's favorite Android phone was fresh after its grand unveiling.

At the time, the S3 wasn't even released in Canada, being only expected to hit North America in June. Still, one bold Canadian guy named Shane decided to try his luck on Facebook and… asked Samsung for a free Galaxy S3. Shane told his favorite company that he already owned one of their LCD TVs, a first-generation Galaxy S phone and a Samsung laptop, and that he thought he might have deserved a free S3 for his dedication to the Korean-based tech giant.

Now Shane realized that he couldn't ask Samsung for absolute charity, so he traded in a Microsoft Paint-style drawing of a quirky dragon blowing fire (with his mouth closed) and going "rawr". Samsung Canada's response came really soon after, but, as expected, Shane didn't get his desired S3. Instead, Sammy told the tech fanatic that his drawing of the dragon was "epic" and sent him another cute drawing of a kangaroo on a unicycle.

Not only was Shane not disappointed about Sammy's response, but he indirectly helped the company to get some unexpectedly huge media attention by posting the private conversation on Reddit. The Canadian's post soon became viral, reaching the "hot" section of the popular social news website in only a matter of hours.

Needless to say that the post's internet success came to Samsung's attention, which then decided to repay the favor and send the company's faithful fan a little surprise. Not only did Shane then become the owner of a spanking new Galaxy S3, but he can now prance around with a truly unique gadget, customized with his own "art", both on the phone's casing and on a custom launcher background.

Now I know what some of you are thinking. This whole shenanigan has PR stunt written all over it. It's pretty hard to think that one ordinary guy simply thought to himself "Hey, why not ask Samsung for a free S3 and get all cute about it and send a quirky drawing?". It's even harder to think that Samsung Canada's response was spontaneous and was simply the work of a regular "Facebook community manager". But even if this was the work of a very complex and well-thought marketing team, who the heck cares?

Is the story silly yet awesome? By God it is! Is it the perfect example of how one can conduct a great marketing campaign that can make a company's products known to a whole lot of young and tech-savvy people? Of course it is!

What I would like to see is what would happen if someone told Apple he or she had an older iPhone, an iPad and iMac and wanted a free new iPhone… Would they even respond? What do you guys think?

LG intros the dual-core Optimus L9, comes with 4.7-inch display and OCR translation app

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 02:15 AM PDT

LG is taking its stylish L-series to new heights two steps at a time. After flooding the market with the Optimus L3, Optimus L5, and Optimus L7 – here comes the most grandeur model of them all, the Optimus L9, which the company hopes can boost its presence in the mid-range market.

It's easy to mistake the Optimus L9 for one of LG's high-end offerings. But just like the Optimus L7, which has been praised for many things except for its slow and outdated processor, LG has to make some necessary cuts to keep the phone within the affordable price bracket – which is what the L-series is all about.

So while the LG Optimus L9 boasts a 4.7-inch IPS display, the phone is only powered by a dual-core 1GHz processor. The rest of the specs are as follow:

  • 1GB RAM
  • 4GB onboard storage
  • 5MP rear camera
  • VGA front-facing camera
  • 2,150mAh battery
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • DLNA, QuickMemo, QTranslator, My Style Keyboard

Design-wise, LG has managed to keep the Optimus L9 reasonably light and thin. The attractive-looking phone weighs 125 grams and is only 9.1mm thick.

Some unique apps that have been included are the new QTranslator and My Style keyboard. The former is a smart translation engine that uses OCR technology and supports 44 languages. Meanwhile, with the My Style keyboard you can easily adjust the layout of the keypad when typing with one hand or two hands.

We'll let you know once LG is ready to share the release date and price of the Optimus L9. Hopefully this will be available for under $400. Interested?

Premium Optimus L9 to Offer Best of L-Style with Innovative UX

SEOUL, Aug. 29, 2012 – The LG Optimus L9 will continue the stylish L-Series lineup of smartphones with its global debut. Following the successful launches of the Optimus L3, Optimus L5, and Optimus L7 earlier this year, the Optimus L9 is anticipated to continue in the success of the L-Series emphasizing premium design heritage developed from LG’s design leadership.

Inheriting LG’s premium L-Style design philosophy, the Optimus L9 has a 9.1mm thin body with a slimming metallic streak and modern square style that offers a comfortable grip from its slim and stylish design.

The high-density 2,150mAh SiO+ battery allows users to enjoy the various new UX features all day long with maximized performance while retaining its incredibly sleek design.
The Optimus L9 was also developed to be a smarter smartphone through LG’s differentiated UX features, such as the QTranslator and My Style Keypad function along with the ever-popular QMemoTM.

The QTranslator function instantly translates not only words, but also entire sentences and phrases with a simple scan from nearly 44 foreign languages to 64 user languages. Using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology, it recognizes letters upon scanning with the camera and utilizes electronic dictionary or online translation engine to translate words, sentences or phrases.

The My Style Keypad function comfortably adjusts the key formation of the keypad according to whether the user is texting with one hand (right or left-handed) or two hands. Lastly, the Optimus L9 will also include the QMemoTM, allowing users to capture, memo and share their ideas with others using their fingertip or handwriting.

“The Optimus L9 is a great smartphone that appeals to every consumer,” said Dr. Jongseok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company. “LG will continue to offer differentiated value through the Optimus L9 and strengthen our position in the smartphone market.”

HTC 10-inch tablet leaks, to be unveiled at IFA?

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 01:49 AM PDT

With IFA 2012 just around the corner, most Android manufacturers are thought to be sharpening their knives for what's going to turn into a battle of life and death come the holiday season. It's no longer a secret that the spotlight in Berlin will be on Samsung, Sony and LG, all expected to come out with a bunch of exciting new gadgets, but somehow HTC managed to be very discrete about the company's plans for the fall/winter seasons.

The only HTC device just about confirmed as being on display at the IFA is the rather modest Desire X phone, while the much awaited One X+ (or One XXL) has fallen off the radar these past few weeks. As much financial trouble as the Taiwanese might be in right now, it was very hard to believe that HTC will only unveil the Desire X at the last major tech event of 2012, so we were waiting for some kind of surprise for some time now.

And quite the surprise it is, in the form of a rather original (and quirky) looking 10-inch tablet. The slate has been leaked courtesy of a bunch of photos published on Twitter, so we can't be sure of its existence, although there are a few things that make us believe in the pics' accuracy.

First off, the source of the photos is the infamous evleaks Twitter account, which has been disabled some time ago, but it seems to have revived now. This was the source of several accurate leaks and rumors in the recent past, so if it is in fact the same account, chances are this 10-incher is real, too. Secondly, the pictures don't look fake to us, although there are a few things that just don't add up.

The display seems too bright and artificial in a couple of the pictures (especially in the one below), so we're betting it was photoshopped in the images. Then again, that doesn't necessarily mean the images are fake and it could mean that the tab wasn't fully functional at the time of the photo shoot.

Leaving the credibility issue aside for a moment, we should talk a bit about the actual leaked tablet. And the first thing we have to say about it is that it looks like a huge gamble for HTC. The Taiwanese only had a couple of tablet efforts in the past, with both the Flyer and the Jetstream failing pretty miserably.

That said, we understand why HTC would want to get back into the game with some thinking outside of the box, but this 10-incher just seems like too much. The design is certainly original and unusual, but it could be easily interpreted as tacky and unpractical. The bezel is extremely thin on three sides and quite thick on the fourth, which might seem weird for users, especially when holding the tablet in portrait mode.

To make matters worse, the tab as a whole also resembles a bit Apple's iMacs, so not only it could be viewed as a bizarre-looking gadget, but it could also feed HTC to the lions. The placement of the two cameras seems uninspired too, especially the front-facing one, which for some reason centers that huge bezel.

As you can imagine, we know nothing about this slate’s tech specs and features, but it’s obvious that it will sport a 10-inch display and will come with an optional docking station of some sort. If it is in fact real…

Who here thinks HTC is seriously considering getting back into the tablet game… with this?

Dropbox introduces 2-step verification for added security, available through ‘experimental build’

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 05:53 PM PDT

dropbox

Cloud storage is one of the technologies that make mobile computing possible in the workplace. With bring-your-own-device (BYOD) setups becoming popular, workers need a way to access documents and data on-the-go. For consumers, cloud storage offers a way to sync files and offer mobile access.

Dropbox is one such means, as it allows users to sync files in between computers and devices. For mobile devices, Dropbox offers cloud-based access so you can bring your files anywhere with an Internet connection.

Of course, the issue with BYOD is security. Lose your smartphone or tablet, and whoever picks it up can potentially view your files and documents. Sensitive information may fall into the wrong hands. Even if your device is not lost, hackers can potentially break into your accounts and gain access.

This is why Google has recommended the use of two-step verification to ensure you’re actually the one accessing your account. This requires (1) something you know, like a password, and (2) something you have, like a smartphone. It’s only smart that you protect important online assets this way, and other companies are following suit.

Dropbox has announced limited support for two-step verification. With an “experimental build” Dropbox developer Jie T. says the company is letting users test the two-factor authentication feature, which should require an additional code prior to gaining access.

Two-step verification adds an extra layer of protection to your account by requiring an additional security code that is sent to your phone by text message or generated using a mobile authenticator app.

Users will not have two-factor authentication on the stable Dropbox application build, though. One will have to download the “forum build” version 1.5.12 and activate two-step verification through a link. The feature may soon be available on the mainstream release, although Dropbox is still mum as to when this will be.

With BYOD increasingly gaining acceptance in the workplace, and with Dropbox being one of the more popular ways for consumers to sync files to the cloud, two-factor verification is one way to increase security. If you’re a Dropbox user, and if you have easy access to a mobile device for SMS or authenticator verification (who doesn’t?), you might want to try this one out.

If you don’t have Dropbox, you might want to try it out. The service offers cross-platform access to your files, which can be synced across devices. Mobile versions offer cloud-based access to files, which are downloaded to the device on an as-needed basis. Dropbox is available for iOS, Android and Blackberry devices.

Apple $1 billion court win causes resale market to overflow with Samsung devices, prices drop

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 05:37 PM PDT

The recently obtained $1 billion win for the iPhone maker in the U.S. Apple vs Samsung trial has all sorts of ripple effects that capture the attention of the media. While Samsung is determined to continue to fight Apple in court despite this "worst scenario" for the South Korean Android device maker, there are side effects that are already felt.

A few days ago we reported that after the verdict was made public, Samsung's market cap dropped $12 billion. Now we hear that the second-hand smartphone market also has to suffer following the Apple win.

MarketWatch reports that Gazelle.com registered a 50% increase in Samsung smartphones over the past few days, which resulted in a 10% price drop for those devices. Apparently at last some Samsung device buyers are dumping their old devices:

"Consumers seem to be jumping ship," says Anthony Scarsella, chief gadget officer at Gazelle.com. "We expect this trend to continue, especially with this latest verdict."

The same phenomenon has been observed at other similar online retailers including TechBargains.com and NextWorth.com:

[…] even before the ruling Android products didn't hold their resale value as well as iPhones. The Samsung S II — which sells for $199 new on a two-year contract, the same as a 16GB iPhone 4S — currently goes for $90 on resale site NextWorth.com.

It will be interesting to see whether the resale price of Samsung devices will continue to drop, or whether this is just a temporary response from the market, in the wake of the unfavorable verdict Samsung received a few days ago, a verdict that's determined to fight at all cost.

Have you sold, or are planning to sell an old Samsung device following Apple's win? How much are you asking for your device?

ISIS coming in September to Galaxy S3, Galaxy S2, HTC One X, Amaze 4G, Droid Incredible 4G LTE

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 05:02 PM PDT

Earlier today we heard that T-Mobile has made available an Ice Cream Sandwich build for its Galaxy S2 version that enables NFC/ISIS features on the handset and at the time we wondered when will ISIS be available on the handset given that the three main U.S. carriers backing the Google Wallet mobile payment rival have not officially announced its availability.

It now looks like we have confirmation that the ISIS mobile payment project developed by Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile will be available to interested consumers in September. According to CNET, Doug Bergeron, CEO of Verifone, "which makes the payment terminals that most mobile payment systems rely on," has confirmed that the launch is scheduled for next month.

The ISIS launch is in line with previous reports that suggested the service will be available at the end of the summer. Smartphone buyers in Salt Lake City and Austin will be among the first to take advantage of the new payment system, and we already have a list of supported devices across the three carriers, as highlighted by a Mastercard document:

  • Verizon HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE
  • Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3
  • AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3
  • AT&T HTC One X
  • T-Mobile HTC Amaze 4G
  • T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3
  • T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2

Other devices will probably soon support ISIS too. How is the service different than Google Wallet? Here's a brief explanation:

Rather than attempt to take a cut of each transaction or, as Google is doing, using the information to deliver targeted ads and deals, ISIS will work as a neutral platform for other companies. The venture will essentially charge a service fee for the use of its network, which works with all of the major credit cards.

We'll tell you more about the ISIS launch once we get there. In the mean time, anyone excited about this new mobile payments venture?

Verizon LG Spectrum 2 picture and accessories leaked online

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 04:23 PM PDT

The LG Spectrum 2 has failed to retain its visual aura of mystery, as the device was caught in all its full glory in a picture spread – complete with accessories – within a matter of hours after the news first broke about its eventual Verizon arrival.

As seen above, Verizon's LG Spectrum 2 is pictured hanging out with a host of similarly unannounced accessories, which include the phone's desktop dock, car-mounted dock and a protective case. Given that the photo is leaked ahead of schedule, the quality isn't quite top notch and you can't quite make out the phone itself.

Since we know that the LG Spectrum 2 is going to be based on LG's Optimus LTE 2, we don't think the final product would veer off too much from the original – save for the usual Verizon marking here and there.

As for the specs, price, and launch date of the LG Spectrum 2, not much progress has been made since we last reported about the phone hours ago. But to drum up some excitement, here's what the Optimus LTE 2 is packing inside: 4.7-inch True HD IPS display, dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4, 2GB RAM, 8MP rear camera, 1.3MP front-facing camera, 2,150mAh battery, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Sounds like a phone that's worth waiting for on Verizon?

Google (Motorola) forced to accept FRAND patent license to Apple in Germany

Posted: 28 Aug 2012 04:21 PM PDT

In addition to fighting, and beating Samsung in various courts, with the most important victory scored in the U.S. last week, Apple is also involved in other patent-based lawsuits involving other major Android players including HTC and Google (Motorola).

The Apple vs Motorola conflict is all the more important now that Google completed its $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola, as Apple and Google are formally facing each other in various courts in the USA but also other regions such as Germany.

And it's in Germany that Motorola obtained a few injunctions against Apple, all stayed pending appeals. FOSS Patents explains how injunction works in the country:

Motorola placed particular hopes on one jurisdiction: Germany, a country in which a finding of infringement automatically results in an injunction, the only exception being standard-essential patents, to which certain German courts apply the Orange-Book-Standard framework. The Orange-Book-Standard line is that an implementer of an industry standard seeking to avoid an injunction over a patent essential to the relevant standard must make an offer to take a license on terms that the patent holder cannot refuse without flagrantly violating antitrust law.

The same publication reveals that Apple has made an offer to license certain FRAND, or standard essential, patents in the region, which Motorola is forced to accept in order to avoid breaking antitrust laws. In fact, Google is already investigated by the EU for FRAND patent abuse in the region, which means that it can't keep refusing a patent license to Apple in hopes of using those FRAND patents as leverage to squeeze out a better settlement with the iPhone maker in the future.

However, it's worth noting that the deal only covers FRAND patents and it's only applicable to Germany for now, which means Google can use the same FRAND patents in other lawsuits against Apple. At the same time, and especially considering previous rulings on FRAND patents in the U.S. – see Judge Richard Posner's take on Motorola FRAND patents and, more recently, the devastating Samsung defeat in which Apple was not found to be infringing FRAND patents – it's not likely to see Google obtain any significant victory against Apple on FRAND patents alone.

Rest assured though that Google is also fighting Apple with non-FRAND patents such as one that covers push email notifications and which is currently enforced in Germany – the feature is not available on various iOS devices.

As for Apple, the company won't have to pay over a 2.25% rate to Google, which is what Motorola "has been demanding for a long time." While the deal has been confirmed by Google (Motorola), neither party has mentioned how much money Apple has to pay to Google.

We'll be back with more news from these Apple vs Android patent wars in the near future, as the conflict is yet to be resolved.
