Chromebook Pixel comes with new Chrome photo app

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 02:38 AM PST

 chromebook-pixel-official-1

In case you didn't hear about it by now, Google on Thursday has made the Chromebook Pixel official, a touchscreen-ready cloud-based laptop that is by far the most elegant, but also the most expensive Chrome OS machine to date.

But why launch a device with a huge resolution display – MacBook Pro with Retina display-like screen – if users won't actually get to take advantage of those 4.3 million pixels?

Sure, more Chrome OS apps will support the new screen resolution, but while we wait we'll tell you that there already is one such app, Google's revamped Chrome photo app.

In a rather logical move, the company updated the photo app by adding new features like touch-friendly support and an extra grain of salt. The app is now more intelligent, and will be able to tell what photos to select from storage, as it understands which ones are blurry or have bad exposure.

Furthermore, the app seems to have been updated to better accommodate sharing needs. As soon as an SD card slot is inserted into the Chromebook, the app will automatically recognize pictures and upload full-resolution images to Google+.

Initially, the app will be available via the Chrome Web Store to Chromebook Pixel buyers, but it will roll out to other devices in the future.

Sony’s Xperia Z to land in Austalia mid-March for $749

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 02:20 AM PST

sony-xperia-z-2

Australia is just one of the many places where the Sony Xperia Z will be gracing its presence. We told you last month that all major mobile operators in the country will be offering the popular phone. Well, now we have some fresh information regarding its availability and pricing in the land of the down under.

If you want to get your claws on the Xperia Z, you'll have to set aside A$749 (US$775), as it's the unlocked price that Sony has set for the phone on its webstore.

Since the Xperia maker hasn't confirmed the exact date of its arrival, we'll have to turn to carriers to satisfy our — and your — curiosity. Both Vodafone and Optus said that the Xperia Z will be up for grabs starting from mid-March. You can get the Z from Vodafone for free with a $60 monthly plan on a two-year contract, though other plans are also available.

As for Telstra, the mobile operator has confirmed that it'll be selling both white and black variants of the phone in its brick-and-mortar stores, while the purple model will only be available online. However, the release date there is still missing.

LG Optimus G finally landing in Europe with Android 4.1, but isn’t it too late?

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 02:08 AM PST

LG_Optimus_G

This is just too confusing. LG is readying the Optimus G Pro (two versions of it, in fact), the G2 is also said to be in the works, while Europeans are only now getting the first-gen Optimus G? That's downright ridiculous!

And yet this is the way LG is choosing to do business. And they wonder why they can't be as successful as Samsung…

Oh, well, at least they're throwing a buttery Jelly Bean treat in there to make Europeans feel like they're not the least important people on Earth. But that's only going to enrage Americans, who are still stuck on Android 4.0 ICS on their Optimus Gs. LG just can't get a break!

Besides the adding of Android 4.1 in the mix, LG hasn't changed much, so this is the same old Optimus G we've known from November 2012. You get a 1.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, 2 GB of RAM, 4.7-inch IPS display with 1,280 x 768 pixels resolution, 4G LTE speeds (where they're achievable), 32 GB of on-board storage and a 2,100 mAh battery.

lg-optimus-g

We're unsure about the camera, but we don't even what to think how pissed Europeans would get if LG was going to slap the "new" Optimus G with an 8 MP snapper. So 13 MP it is… hopefully!

Getting back to the software for a second, let's say the traditional JB tweaks are not flying solo. LG has also updated the QSlide feature and added Safety Care and Privacy Keeper.

G's first stop on the old continent will be Sweden by the end of this month (so, next week), followed by France, Germany, Italy and other unspecified countries in March. No words on pricing yet, but with the far more impressive Xperia Z and HTC One launching any day now, LG needs something special to draw attention. Maybe €500? Less?

Galaxy S3, Note 2 and other TouchWiz devices affected by copy-paste clipboard bug [video]

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 02:06 AM PST

galaxy s3 and note 2

Looking for a fast way to reboot your Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2 and other Android Samsung handsets and tablets that have TouchWiz running on top of the Android 3.0-4.1? Just start copying stuff and soon enough your device will crash and reboot.

Apparently this is an issue that affects plenty of Samsung device owners, and according to the video below, posted on YouTube just yesterday, Samsung has been aware of the issue and fixing it since October 22, 2012, or exactly four months ago.

The problem appears to lie with the clipboard that keeps track of your copying commands for later pasting, and the bug is triggered after 20 or so items are saved in it. But then again this is not an exact recipe for “success,” and crashes occur randomly. After all, who keeps tracks on how many items were copied?

Obviously this TouchWiz clipboard bug should be fixed with a software update, not that Samsung has the freedom of releasing such updates whenever they please considering that everything must go through carriers. However, the company was fairly quick to patch those recently discovered Exynos chip vulnerabilities, so one would assume that since late October last year the company would have had time to release an update to fix the problem.

And in case you’re wondering, this appears to be a problem that affects stock Samsung ROMs, so if you happen to be running a custom Android built on your Galaxy smartphone or tablet, a TouchWiz-less one, then chances are you’re not experiencing it.

Has this issue affected your daily activities?

HTC One priced in Germany, on-contract in UK

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 01:28 AM PST

htc-one-front[aa]

Still haven't made up your minds on HTC's "One to rule them all"? Can't say I blame you. The thing is a mixed bag of nuts, and, with Galaxy S4's launch looming, it's hard to think Sammy won't do enough to undercut HTC… again.

Yet there's something about the One that sticks. And for the time being at least, the 4.7-incher does have enough "juice" to outdo champs like the Droid DNA or Galaxy Note 2. Those are last year's flagships, but still.

But if HTC wants to capitalize on this presumed short period of domination, the One has to be released… yesterday. Thankfully, the Taiwanese look like they've learned a thing or two after last year's One X flop. The current ETA for Europe is mid-March, but don't be surprised if you're going to see the bad boy in stores earlier.

The German and UK launch stages are all set, with pricing details almost fully revealed. O2 seems to have the edge on the competition in Deutschland, even though T-Mobile, Vodafone and E-Plus are also confirmed to carry the phone.

HTC One Germany

We're less than 12 days away from O2 Germany's release, according to the network's website, meaning the One will start shipping on March 6. Off-contract pricing starts at €661 ($870), while the subsidized flavor will set you back €25.99 each month.

In both cases, you'll get a Beats by Dr. Dre headphone set for free (normally worth €99), so the deal doesn't sound half bad.

Notebooksbiliger.de also has the HTC One listed for pre-order, but the ETA is "late March". The retailer's One is at the same time a tad pricier than O2's off-contract version – €669.90. On the other hand, if you prefer a carrier-locked model, you can pre-order it from here with Vodafone, T-Mobile or O2 plans starting at €182.

HTC One UK

Meanwhile, even if the GB launch is still scheduled for March 15, (some) on-contract pricing details have been revealed in addition to unlocked price points. Phones4U, which happens to have the best price for the SIM-free One, also offers it with Vodafone, Orange and EE 24-month contracts.

The best deal seems to be with Orange, where you can get the One for free with £36 plans including 900 minutes, unlimited texts and 1 GB of data. Vodafone and EE also have the HTC phone available for no upfront charge, but their plans are steeper, at £37 and £41 respectively.

Upon pre-ordering the HTC One, you'll get a complimentary set of UR Beats headphones, as well as a flip case, worth a total of over £100. Not too shabby, but is it enough to make you not wait for the GS4? You tell us.

Galaxy S4 to feature Samsung Orb, a Photo Sphere of its own

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 01:27 AM PST

photo-sphere

That's right, we have more Galaxy S4 rumors for you, and this time around we're talking about a feature we expect to see on the device – panoramic picture mode – since, after all, it's a feature available in the latest Android OS versions. But, obviously, Samsung will have its own custom Photo Sphere, called Samsung Orb, a new report reveals.

Android Geeks has it from a software engineer working on the Galaxy S4 that the flagship device will come with panoramic picture mode and Samsung Orb will let users capture 360-degree images.

According to the unnamed engineer, the Orb will give you "an almost three-dimensional viewing experience," and it will be "even better than Photo Sphere, courtesy of the S4's amazing camera.”

Speaking about camera, most rumors say that the Galaxy S4 will have a 13-megapixel camera, and it will surely be interesting to see whether Samsung has any other special camera features up its sleeve for this device, or whether it's simply moving along in the megapixels race instead of coining UltraPixels-like marketing terms.

How reliable is the rumor? Well, we certainly expect more Android smartphones to offer Photo Sphere capabilities in the future, whether using Google’s default app or building their own similar experiences. The recently announced LG Optimus G Pro is one such example, going the custom route as well, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see Samsung include its own panorama mode in future Galaxy devices.

That said, we are a bit surprised that a Samsung engineer would reveal as much considering the way Samsung has been protecting such leaks in the past – or is this some sort of anti-UltraPixels controlled leaked of some sort? We’ll tell you more in a few weeks, once the Galaxy S4 becomes official, at which point we’ll surely be able to confirm or deny the Samsung Orb feature.

Are you used to taking panoramic photos? Do you care much about such a feature?

HTC’s CEO says company sticking with Sense, blames marketing for its problems

Posted: 22 Feb 2013 12:12 AM PST

peter-chou-htc-ceoDuring all the buzz around the launch of the HTC One, HTC’s CEO Peter Chou also gave some media interviews about the new phone and the direction that HTC is taking. One aspect of HTC phones, which you either love or hate, is the Sense UI which the company builds into Android to replace some of the stock user interface. One of the reasons people give for not buying a HTC phone is their loathing of the UI, which is often called bloated. But love it or hate it, the HTC One comes with Sense 5 and according to Chou, Sense is here to stay.

In an interview with The Verge, Chou was asked about the lessons learned from the HTC One X and HTC One S. What was his response? Apparently it was all to do with bad marketing! Other than the Sense UI, the other accusation leveled at HTC is that it released too many phones. To clarify this a bit, Samsung, Sony and all the other Android smartphone makers have a large selection of phones and at different price points, but HTC seemed to go through a phase of just releasing the same phone over and over again with small tweaks. The HTC One S, One SU, One SV and so on. The difference between one model and another was the lack of Corning Gorilla Glass, or a slower CPU, or the addition of LTE. All very confusing.

And maybe it is that confusion that HTC means to address with its new marketing approach. HTC’s boss did acknowledged that the company needed to improve its marketing so that “people really get the message.” Many users felt a certain level of frustration after they buy a phone then a few months later a variation comes out. Personally I think the naming is a big problem, I think the name for the HTC One is wrong. Although building on a brand like Samsung has done with “Galaxy” is important, Samsung has made sure that the names are sufficiently different but yet have the same brand. With HTC all they do is add or remove a single letter, which is way to subtle for most people!

htc-one-back-1

One worrying aspect is that it isn’t clear that HTC knows who its target market is. When asked about who its core customers were, Chou replied that they are people “who are driven and are passionate about their beliefs and are looking for differentiation.” People who “appreciate innovation”, who “appreciate inspiring experiences.” Well, first that is a not very convincing, everyone appreciates innovation. When I saw my first microwave oven, I didn’t say, nah, I don’t like that, too innovative. When I had an MRI last year I didn’t harken back to the days of x-rays. No, sorry Peter, everyone appreciates innovation. In fact Mr Chou used the word “innovation” ten times in the interview as if somehow the idea of creating something new was itself something new to HTC.

When questioned about Windows Phone and Android, HTC’s top man was very diplomatic. HTC loves Android but it equally loves Windows Phone. Which does he prefer, why both of course! That is too be expected, but he was more frank when asked about other mobile operating systems like Ubuntu, Firefox OS, or Tizen. It seems that HTC is very happy to remain with Android and Windows, well for the moment anyway.

As for tablets, yes HTC is interested, but it needs to figure out how it can differentiate it from all the others that are already on the market. Wise words. The last thing HTC needs to do now in the middle of its financial troubles is release a run-of-the-mill tablet that could be mistaken for a clone of one of the myriads of tablets already out there.

What do you think, was marketing HTC’s biggest problem? Please leave a comment below.

Sony-Xperia-E-Dual-champagne

If you're in the market for a new smartphone from a major brand that offers dual SIM capability, which is quite a rare breed in the U.S., you might be interested in what Sony has to offer. The Xperia E Dual, the dual SIM phone that was launched back in December, is now up for pre-order in America.

You can grab the Xperia E Dual either in champagne or black directly from Sony's online store, which is selling the phone for $199 unlocked. If you pre-order it now, the handset will be shipped out next week for free.

Having a phone with two SIM card slots is great for folks who are looking to declutter their mobile life. With the Xperia E Dual (UMTS/HSPA and GPRS/EDGE), you can also easily select which number to use at specific times automatically.

As for the specs, the Xperia E Dual sports a 3.5-inch display with 320 x 480 resolution, a single-core 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, microSD support, 3.2MP main camera, a front cam, 1,500mAh battery, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Motorola hands out $50 Google Play voucher for purchase of new smartphone

Moto-Google-Play-promo

Motorola is yet to reveal its flagship smartphone for 2013, though if rumors are to be believed the upcoming Motorola X is going to be "a game changer".

To provide an incentive for customers who may find it harder to choose the brand over competing ones, the company is giving away $50 Google Play credit for those who purchase select Motorola smartphones between February 18 – March 4.

The list of eligible phones include: Droid Razr M, Droid Razr HD, Droid Razr Maxx HD, Droid Razr, Droid Razr Maxx, Droid 4, Atrix HD, Atrix 2, Photon Q LTE, Photon 4G, Titanium, Admiral, Electrify M, Electrify 2, and Defy XT.

If you buy the device straight from Motorola.com, you'll be automatically registered for the $50 promotional credit, otherwise you'll have to fill out and mail the rebate form, as well as proof of purchase, to Moto — and wait for 1-2 weeks.

Once you've received the credit, you can use it on music, movies, books, apps, and more. It’s safe to assume that grabbing the Nexus 4 or any other hardware from Google Play is out of the question.

French operator Orange unveils three new Android phones: Nivo, Lumo, San Remo

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 09:03 PM PST

The French operator Orange, which actually serves quite a few number of countries, has today announced three new Android smartphone. Two of them use Qualcomm chips, but one of them, the San Remo, uses a MediaTek chip. Let’s just dive right in:

The Nivo is the cheapest of the three, though we don’t exactly have a price tag yet. It’s going to have a 4 inch 800 x 480 screen and a 5 megapixel camera. Under the hood there’s a dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon S2 clocked at 1 GHz. And Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is on-board.

Next up the ladder is the San Remo. Like we said earlier, it uses a MediaTek chip, which something that’s quite rare in Europe. The chip in question is the MT6577, which is a dual core ARM Cortex A9 part that’s clocked at 1 GHz. The phone has a gigantic 4.7 inch screen that painfully only does 800 x 480 pixels. And as for the cameras, 8 megapixels on the back, 2 megapixels on the front.

And finally, the cock of the walk, we have the Lumo. It’s Orange’s first network branded smartphone to have 4G LTE. It’s going to support the 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 2600 MHz bands. As for the specs, you’re looking at a 4.5 inch display that does 960 × 540 pixels, 8 megapixel camera, and a dual core processor (Qualcomm S4 Plus) clocked at 1.2 GHz.

We really wish we could tell you how much these devices cost, but that information wasn’t provided. We don’t even know which European countries will get which phones. We’ll try to get some answers at Mobile World Congress next week. We’re really curious to know who made these things. Huawei? ZTE? An unknown Chinese player we haven’t even heard of yet?

Update: There’s a really nice collection of hands-on photos of these phones on The Next Web.

New Sony Xperia SP rumors swirl in

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 06:43 PM PST

Ready for yet another rumor regarding yet another Sony device that was named by picking random letters from the alphabet? The latest bit comes from XperiaBlog, and the outlet has apparently gotten word about the Sony Xperia SP (or the C530X, as it was once called). According to a “trusted” source of theirs, The SP will feature a 1.7Ghz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, Adreno 320 graphics, and possibly a 4.6 inch 720p HD display.

The phone will also feature Sony’s 8 megapixel Exmor camera sensor, 8GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, and will sport an aluminum construction with the only exception to that being the back plate (said to be plastic). It doesn’t sound like something Sony’s going to be touting as the next big thing, but it could be a very solid offering for those who don’t need to biggest and baddest smartphone on the planet.

We’re not sure when to expect Sony’s next round of wares but the company has a history of surprising us with a few things at Mobile World Congress. We’ll have to wait and see if there’s anything in-store for us once we make our way to Barcelona next week.

Nikon licenses Microsoft patent to use Android on cameras

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 05:55 PM PST

Microsoft has made quite the reputation for itself in these patent wars. Its most notable claim to infamy in the mobile space has been the ability to strong-arm several Android manufacturers into paying a licensing fee for every device sold. Now, it looks to be getting another piece from the point-and-shoot camera pie.

Renown camera manufacturer Nikon has come to agreement with Microsoft to enable them to make Android-based cameras. The terms and amount of the deal weren’t enclosed, of course, but Microsoft will likely receive a small stipend for every device sold running Android. Since Nikon already has one on the market with the Coolpix S800C there might be some back-pay going to Microsoft, as well.

We’re not sure how much further Nikon is looking to go with the “Android on cameras” experiment, but you know we aren’t complaining to see more manufacturers get on the train. It’s just a shame that Microsoft has its hands in the pockets of nearly anyone who tries to come near Android. Still, these OEMs see the platform for what it is — the fastest growing mobile operating system ever, and one that commands a vast majority of the market. A few dollars for each device sold won’t hurt too bad in the grand scheme of things.

Pantech Perception hits FCC, does horrible job of hiding Verizon affiliation

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 03:49 PM PST

It’s no secret by now that the Pantech Perception is real and on its way to Verizon, but in case you needed a reminder of that fact the FCC has exposed each and every corner of the device for all to see. The photos included in the filing don’t show any Verizon logos, but considering each carrier’s 4G LTE logo is unique it’s not hard to figure out that this is still a device headed for Big Red.

The Pantech Perception is rumored to be coming with an HD display of unknown size, 4G LTE, Qualcomm’s 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor and more. As with most Pantech phones we imagine this will be an affordable option for those not willing to spend $200-300 on a phone, but without official word from Verizon it’s tough to say.

With this stop at the FCC we imagine we’re a bit closer to it being ready for a grand unveiling, but for now just take a second to look at its Coke bottle-like curves in the images above and below.

White House must respond to questions about cellphone unlock law as petition reaches 100,000 signatures

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 02:57 PM PST

When the White House first launched its petition website, the goal was to create a direct medium of communication between government and the people. Petitions made a lot of sense as it was a great way to gauge which issues are most important to people. The White House promised to respond to any petition that reached a certain threshold before a certain amount of time.

The original threshold was set at 30,000 signatures, but because it was so easy for pranksters to get the White House to respond to a request to build a death star, the threshold was tweaked to 100,000. That made it more difficult to get discussion on real issues going, but we understand the need.

That said, the one petition us phone lovers really care about — the one to make the unlocking of cell phones legal again — reached the 100,000 mark just before the cut-off date. The Librarian of Congress put into effect a rule that effectively banned the act of unlocking your phone without carrier consent. Most scoffed at the law and the idea that the government could scare citizens away using court fines and possible prosecution, but regardless of how you feel about the ridiculous nature of the enforcement or the law itself most would still rather it be done away with.

With this milestone reached, an official from the White House must respond to the request laid out in the original petition. That doesn’t necessarily mean the White House has to comply with the request, but we will at least get a nice, thoughtful response. And note that even if the White House officials agree with the movement, it’s not entirely up to them whether or not the law stays, goes, or is changed.

The best case scenario would be to see the new law rescinded by the Librarian of Congress at the request of the Obama administration. In other words, don’t get your hopes up just yet — just be happy that we’ll even be able to get a real, meaningful response at all. We’ll keep our eye out for the update from the White House in the weeks to come.

Report: Huawei Ascend P2 won’t have 1080p display

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 02:11 PM PST

Information about Huawei’s Ascend P2 couldn’t come soon enough. It seems rumors about the phone change by the day, and now the latest one — regarding its display — is perhaps more troubling than anything, depending on who you are. According to Zol, Huawei decided not to put a 4.7 inch 1080p panel inside the Ascend P2 as the company will instead opt for a 720p display. It’s said this decision was made for one of two reasons.

For starters, Huawei believes that particular pixel density — a staggering 468 ppi — is overkill for the human eye at such small display sizes. Secondly, having such high resolution would eat up unnecessary amounts of battery. Those are two very good points, and a friendly reminder that, sometimes, more doesn’t always equal better.

Remember that Huawei’s goal with the P2, as it was with the P1, is to reclaim the world’s thinnest smartphone title. If it has to sacrifice battery life for higher resolution, it would have to throw in a thicker battery to compensate. That compromise would effectively chuck the P2 out of the running for the title that changes hands faster than I can change my underwear.

Even with a lower resolution panel we’re still expecting an impressive device to debut at Mobile World Congress. Other rumored specs include a 1.8GHz quad-core processor that was built in-house, 2GB of RAM, a 13 megapixel camera, 16GB of internal storage, and should come pre-installed with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. We’ll be on our way to Barcelona to get up close and personal with it if Huawei decides to announce it (there’s no reason they won’t) so stay tuned to Phandroid if you’re eager to see how it turns out.

Google ChromeBook Pixel goes official, starts at $1,300 [VIDEO]

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 12:09 PM PST

It wasn’t long ago that we were discussing the rumored ChromeBook Pixel, and the fine souls Google made quick work of dispelling those rumors by, well, confirming it themselves. What you see below is the absolute best ChromeBook we’ve seen to date, and its high cost (starting at about $1,300) is seemingly justified. So why, exactly, would Google ask you to pay that much for a ChromeBook?

Well, for starters, the display has a lot to do with it — it is called the ChromeBook “Pixel,” after all. Google says it boasts the highest pixel density of any laptop computer to date, with 239 pixels per inch crammed into the display. It does that by having a 12.85″ display 2,560 x 1,700 resolution. With 4.3 million pixels in all, and “extra-wide” viewing angles, sharp text and vibrant colors, Google says this is the most crisp display you’ll have ever used on a laptop. Oh, and did I mention it’s touch-enabled? No? Well, there you go.

The laptop was constructed out of anodized aluminum alloy, and it was crafted in order to hide the ugly vents, screws and other necessary bits holding it all together. Google didn’t even want you to see the stereo speakers tucked as it has hidden that below the backlit keyboard the Pixel has. The touchpad is made from etched glass, and apparently was tested with a laser microscope for extremely accurate performance.

Inside will be Intel’s Core i5 processor, and like any ChromeBook this thing relies on 32GB of built-in solid-state memory for extremely fast performance and boot-up times. Google’s handling storage with the cloud as it’s giving users 1 terabyte of Google Drive space to store all your necessities. The device will come in WiFi-only and LTE configurations for $1,300 and $1,450 respectively, and Google will even throw in 12 free GoGo flight passes for those times when you need to connect in the air.

It really does look like a beautiful device, but you’re probably interested in knowing when you’ll be able to purchase one. If you have the coin to spare you can actually head to the Play Store right now and grab one if you’re in the United States or the United Kingdom, but if you prefer brick and mortar you’ll have to wait a while before Best Buy begins stocking them (though several select locations have them up for display right now). Be sure to take a closer look at the ChromeBook Pixel in the video above.

Sprint has posted a notice to its support site informing HTC EVO Design 4G owners to expect a small update to soon reach their handsets. There isn’t much of note in software version 4.02.651.2. The update corrects issues with the phone’s hotspot functionality, improves message load times, and brings the Sprint Connections Optimizer.

Ubuntu Touch developer preview now available for download and installation

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 10:03 AM PST

A couple days removed from offering a first look at Ubunutu Touch for tablets, Canonical has launched a developer preview of the new mobile OS. Designed to play nice with Android development phones, the linux-based Ubuntu Touch features support for the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10. But if you are thinking about moving to the operating system as a daily driver, take note of the “developer preview” tag.

As the build is being released with development for the platform in mind, it does not support the full range of functions  you would get from a fully-baked smartphone experience. The software is described as “very new and unfinished.”

Still, if you are tempted to take a look, take heed. Installing Ubuntu Touch will wipe your device of all data. You will want to be sure to make a proper backup in advance. Check out complete details on device compatibility as well as installation instructions at the source link below.

Patent details how Google Glass might look on a different frame

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 09:18 AM PST

A newly published patent is giving us one of the more detailed looks into Google’s Project Glass to date. The filing comes a day after Google opened applications for their Glass Explorer program to members of the general public. Shown among the pages of the document are detailed illustrations of the Glass headset we have become familiar with. Also included is a look at what the concept might look like when mounted in a more traditional set of glasses.

For the technically inclined, the patent gives a great overview of how Glass operates, detailing the process of projecting the headset’s UI, keeping it consistent within the field of vision, and even how the device can be used for augmented reality applications. There is even talk of a display method that would project an overlay directly onto a person’s retina.

With all the hype Google has been pumping lately, you would think the futuristic headset would be rolling off the production line soon, but we’re far from seeing Glass in the real world, and I suspect even farther from seeing it built into traditional eyeglasses (side note: wouldn’t it be nice if Google sold a kit that could turn any pair of glasses into a Project Glass device?).

Motorola tempts smartphone buyers with $50 Google Play gift card

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 08:25 AM PST

If you’re in the market for a new smartphone, plenty of options abound. The recently announced HTC One, a new lineup from LG, and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4 account for only a few of the many new devices worth checking out. But one company having a quiet beginning to the new year is hoping to lure customers their way with a special offer. Now through March 4th, Motorola will give anyone buying one of their handsets a $50 Google Play gift card.

The deal extends to such devices as the Droid RAZR family (including the RAZR M and RAZR MAXX HD), older devices like the Atrix 2 and Droid 4, as well as lower-end fare such as the Electrify and Defy XT. To receive their gift card, however, new owners must complete a mail-in form, meaning if you are in search of instant gratification, better to look elsewhere. But when the gift card does arrive, that’s plenty of dough to fill out a newly purchased smartphone with apps, games, music, books, and more.

Snapchat adds video in latest Android update

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 07:02 AM PST

After a beta period, video recording and sharing has made its way into Snapchat for Android as an official feature. The updated version of the app, which is now available from Google Play for phones running Android 2.2 or higher, was made available to a small group of Android users last week, the large variety of devices running the OS being a major hurdle in getting video to play nice.

Video functions the same as still images in the updated version of Snapchat. A brief clip will self-destruct after playback, making it the preferred app of those looking to get a bit risqué with their messaging. While the feature has made its official debut, Snapchat is still seeking feedback to improve overall video performance. Check out their blog for more details.

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 06:14 AM PST

HBO subscribers are getting another way to view their favorite television shows on the go as both HBO GO and MAX GO have been updated to feature the ability to display content via HDMI. Previously, subscribers had no option but to enjoy the premium content on the small screen.

Version 2.0 of the app provides a surprising amount of freedom from a company that has done its best to keep its content exclusive while adapting to modern viewing trends. The initiative is happening across the board, as HBO recently enabled AirPlay streaming for Apple devices. You can grab the latest version of HBO GO from Google Play now.

ASUS releases overview video for the MeMO Pad Smart 10

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 06:30 AM PST

ASUS_MeMO_Pad_Smart_ 10_124

We thought it was going to be called the MeMo Pad 10, but apparently it will be the MeMO Pad Smart 10. ASUS already confirmed the tablet last week, but now they released an overview video. This tab falls in line with the TransformerPad TF300 with a 10-inch IPS display and Tegra 3 processor. It comes with SonicMaster sound technology and a 5MP camera. Other than a pink offering, there’s nothing earth shattering here, but if priced right, it could be a decent 10-inch tablet for a lot of people. Hit the break for the video.

Sony announces PlayStation app that enables a smartphone or tablet to become a second screen for PlayStation 4 gaming

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 06:04 AM PST

PS4_Coming_Soon_Holiday

With Sony’s big announcement last night on the PlayStation 4, it’s no shocker that there would be something Android (and iOS) related. They announced a new app, simply called the PlayStation App, that will allow Android (and iOS) smartphones and tablets to become a second screen when playing PlayStation 4 games. Sega had the vision years ago with the controllers that came with the Dreamcast, but Sony is taking it to the next level.

The TV will still be the display of choice for gameplay, but you can now use your smartphone or tablet to look at maps. It makes perfect sense when playing something like football against a friend because your opponent won’t have any idea what play you’re calling. Users will also be able to purchase PlayStation titles from their devices and watch other gamers.

Press release

PS4 Second Screens

PS4 integrates second screens, including PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita), smartphones and tablets, to wrap gamers in their favorite content wherever they are. A key feature enabled by second screens is “Remote Play” and PS4 fully unlocks its potential by making PS Vita the ultimate companion device. With PS Vita, gamers will be able to seamlessly pull PS4 titles from their living room TVs and play them on PS Vita’s beautiful 5-inch display and intuitive dual analog sticks over Wi-Fi networks It is SCEI’s long-term vision is to make most PS4 titles playable on PS Vita.

A new application from SCE called “PlayStation®App” will enable iPhone, iPad, and Android based smartphones and tablets to become second screens. Once installed on these devices, users can, for example, see maps on their second screens when playing an adventure game, purchase PS4 games while away from home and download it directly to the console at home, or remotely watch other gamers playing on their devices.

Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 200 and 400 for entry level phones

Posted: 20 Feb 2013 09:58 PM PST

Qualcomm_Snapdragon_600_800_Series_CES_2013

Today, Qualcomm made their entry level Snapdragon processors official, and listed off some pretty impressive specs for what’s going to be considered “budget phone” in the next few months. The Snapdragon 200 series is the weaker of the two, offering quad A5 CPUs at up to 1.4 GHz per core, Adreno 203 GPU, and UMTS and CDMA support. The 200 series is listed as being balanced for cost and performance and will provide excellent battery life and speed for entry level phones.

The 400 series is the big brother of the two, and comes in two variants; Dual Krait CPUs running at up to 1.7GHz per core, or a quad A7 CPU at 1.4 GHz per core. It’s paired with the Adreno 305 GPU, Miracast wireless display technology, a slew of different modem options, and LPDDR2 or LPDDR3 RAM, which will drastically improve processor performance. When this generation’s budget processors are quad-core, I think it’s safe to say that the devices to be released in 2013 are going to be pretty phenomenal.

Google possibly developing touchscreen laptops running Chrome OS

Posted: 20 Feb 2013 09:45 PM PST

chromebooks

We’ve heard rumors here and there about Google bringing a touch-enabled Chromebook to the market, but so far nothing has really materialized. Now the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google is definitely preparing some touch devices slated for release later this year. There’s no word on exact release dates, or what manufacturer Google will be partnering with to make these devices, but after the recent marketing push for Chromebooks in the Play Store, as well as Google’s efforts on polishing up Chrome OS, I wouldn’t expect these plans to fall through.

This does put Google in an odd position, however. On one hand, these Chromebooks could potentially eat up some Android device sales. On the other hand, after Android’s wild success, the next market for Google to attack would be the desktop computer market, which is almost exclusively dominated by Microsoft’s Windows. Personally, I think the Chromebooks, if offered at a decent price like Google’s Nexus devices, would make a great addition to Android powered smartphones and tablets. And after Microsoft’s less-than-stellar Windows 8 debut, Google has a shot at turning these niche devices into something mainstream. We’ll just have to wait and see.

lg-Optimus-f-series-f5-f7

Remember when we showed you the Optimus F5 and F7 leaks? Well, it didn’t take long for LG to officially confirm the pair of devices. They still have differing button layouts, which is definitely an oddity, but the specs should hopefully make up for that. The bigger device, the F7, has an HD screen, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM, an 8MP camera and 2,540mAh battery.

They both come with LTE connectivity out of the box, as well as Android 4.1.2 with LG’s custom overlay. And in case you were wondering about colors, both devices will be offered in white and black. It’s no flagship device, but if you’re planning on picking up a solid, powerful device without breaking the bank, either of these will more than suit your needs. ZTE to release first Tegra 4 powered smartphones (in China)

Posted: 20 Feb 2013 09:22 PM PST

NVIDIA_Tegra_4_Shipping_delays

We’ve seen some pretty exciting new phone announcements lately, but none of them are running NVIDIA’s new Tegra 4 chip. ZTE is looking to be the first to market with a line of  ”super phones” powered by the powerhouse quad-core Tegra 4. They plan on debuting the phones in the first half of 2013 in China, and thanks to the new i500 LTE chip, they’ll sport global LTE voice and data. Cool, right? ZTE has always had a knack for making affordable, but powerful phones, so hopefully this new lineup will have some success. Fingers crossed we see it in some other markets, too. Hit the break below to check out the press release.

New Devices to Feature 72 Custom GPU Cores, Quad-Core Cortex-A15 CPU,  Icera i500 LTE Chipset for High Performance, Power Efficiency, Fast 4G Networking

20 February 2013, Shenzhen, China – ZTE Corporation ("ZTE") (H share stock code: 0763.HK / A share stock code: 000063.SZ), a publicly-listed global provider of telecommunications equipment, network solutions and mobile devices has announced that it is partnering with NVIDIA to deliver the first super phones powered by the NVIDIA® Tegra® 4 mobile processor, with the first models to reach the market before mid-year.

ZTE has a long-term strategic partnership with NVIDIA and expects to launch the first Tegra 4 super phones in China in the first half of 2013. The Tegra 4 processor was only announced by NVIDIA in January, at the CES 2013 exhibition in Las Vegas.

"This is a clear demonstration of ZTE's ability to quickly develop, and bring to market, market-leading devices running the industry's latest technologies," said Mr. He Shiyou, ZTE EVP and Head of the Terminal Division.

The NVIDIA Tegra 4 will enable the ZTE devices to deliver ultra-fast web browsing, improved app load times, more realistic gaming experiences and great battery life – thanks to the processor's 72 custom NVIDIA GeForce® cores and quad-core ARM Cortex-A15 CPU.

Tegra 4 also enables worldwide 4G LTE voice and data support through an optional chipset, the NVIDIA i500 processor. ZTE and NVIDIA are also planning a new LTE super phone using the i500 LTE chipset for blazing-fast networking.

These new devices build on ZTE and NVIDIA's success with previous smartphones such as the Grand X, the first smartphone powered by both the Tegra processor and NVIDIA's Icera modem; the Grand Era super phone with Tegra 3; and the U950, the first premium quad-core smartphone
with Tegra 3 priced below $160 USD.

“We're proud to continue our pioneering partnership with NVIDIA and are looking forward to
offering more Tegra-powered devices, which are defining a new generation of phones offering premium mobile computing experiences," said Mr. He. “Our Tegra 4 smartphones will provide full HD entertainment and multimedia experiences that consumers will love.”

“ZTE’s newest super phones will show off Tegra 4′s processing power, efficiency and unprecedented capabilities," said Phil Carmack, Senior Vice President of the Mobile business at NVIDIA. "They're a great example of what the market expects from one of the world’s largest phone makers.”
