Mock-up
Earlier today, Samsung confirmed that they dont have plans to launch a Galaxy S III, which is a bit disappointing because all of us were expecting it. Samsung is still focused on MWC, and they are preparing to introduce new devices at the event. One of those devices could be the Samsung Galaxy S II Plus.
We don't know much about this device, other than it showed up in An3DBenchXL's benchmark database, and it's packing Android 2.3.4, a WVGA display, and a 1.5 GHz CPU. The Galaxy S II features a 1.2 GHz processor, whereas the Sprint Galaxy Nexus comes with a 1.5 GHz CPU, so we're expecting the GSII Plus's processor to be the same.
We are not sure about the processor manufacturer, but I believe that it will feature Samsung's own Exynos processor. Furthermore, this device could be Samsung's customizedversion of the Galaxy Nexus, featuring TouchWiz UI running on top of Android 4.0, which Google didn't allow with their pure experience device, the Galaxy Nexus.
Hopefully if the device is real, we will see it MWC later this month. Anyone looking forward to it? What else could Samsung have planned for us in Barcelona? Let us know what you think by leaving a comment below!

As Huawei moves toward the U.S. market, the Huawei Honor was spotted in an FCC filing, with AT&T's 3G and HSPA+ bands. While that doesn't mean that it's destined to AT&T, there's a possibility that it will either hit AT&T or will be available via online retailers.
The Honor is a mid-range device featuring a beautiful design with powerful body, and it's cheap as well. Also it's the world's first device to receive an Android 4.0 update, so it will have the latest software when it launches. The Honor is available in different markets worldwide and it's selling well. As for the specs, it comes with a 4-inch, 854×480 display, a 1.4Ghz single-core Qualcomm processor, 8MP camera with 720p video capabilities, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of on-board storage, and microSD card slot.
So if it hits AT&T, who's going to pick one up? Tell us about it in the comments!

Samsung is releasing the source code for the Galaxy Note on AT&T but there's a catcg. As you can see from the picture above, there are three different versions of the source. A clever reader from AndroidPolice found out that the only difference is just one line of code, but we'll leave it up to you to find out what it does, if you're so inclined.
Now that the source code is released, we'll likely see more development on the Galaxy Note. Let the custom ROMs and kernels commence! Eager to explore the source code? Just click this link.
So, are there any developers out there that are planning to cook up a juicy ROM for the Galaxy Note? Any Galaxy Note owners out there that are getting excited already? Let us know in the comments!

Clockworkmod is without doubt the most useful tool for rooters and ROM installers. Providing detailed functions like backup and restore, wiping options, and of course installing ROMs.
As awesome as it may be, it can be a bit of a pain to navigate around all those options, as you have to do it using the volume buttons and the power button. To solve this, Koush has added touch to Clockworkmod and adjusted the interface to complement this. Scrolling may not be buttery smooth, and there still is a little lagm but at least you don't have to do finger stretching exercices everytime you're in trouble with your device. The devices supported as of yet are:
  • HTC Evo 4G
  • HTC EVO 3D (CDMA/GSM)
  • HTC Desire GSM
  • HTC Desire HD
  • HTC Thunderbolt
  • Motorola Atrix 4G
  • Galaxy Nexus
  • Nexus S/Nexus S 4G
Excited yet? The new Clockworkmod is available for download from here, or from ROM Manager Premium. Who's installed it on their device yet? Drop a comment below!

A few weeks ago, Sony officially launched the Xperia S, which is running on Android 2.3. Besides the fact that it'll launch with Gingerbread, we know the Xperia S will pack a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 4.3-inch Reality Display with a resolution of 1280 x 720, and a 12MP rear camera with fast capturing time. But there are some internal details we all want to hear about this mouth-watering device.

Clove UK has released the whitepaper for the Sony Xperia S, which gives us some more in-depth information about the phone. From the whitepaper, we learned that it's a PlayStation-certified device. Also, the 720p display of the phone is protected by a shatterproof sheet on scratch resistant glass. The bad news is that the phone features internal storage of only 1 to 1.5GB. But there is a silver lining in the form of a microSD card slot. The 12MP camera features a 16x digital zoom, a f/2.4 aperture and 3D sweep panorama mode.
Sony Timescape is still there, and the device also comes with an "infinite button," which acts as a smart filter within Timescape. It also comes with USB tethering and WiFi hotspot functionality built in.
It will hit the U.S. as the Xperia Ion, and it will be up for pre-order somewhere around March. I can't wait to get my hands on this device. Is anyone else looking forward to it? Let us know in the comments!

U.S. launched a tablet and a smartphone today, both with LTE capablities, and both from Samsung. First is the famous Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G, and it's not much different from its WiFi cousin: Android 3.2, 10.1 inch display, and TouchWiz UX.

The Samsung Galaxy S Aviator, which looks a lot like the Droid Charge, is packing a 4.3-inch WVGA Super AMOLED Plus display, runs Android 2.3.6, an 8MP rear camera, a front-facing shooter, and an HDMI port.
The Tab 10.1 is scheduled to hit the shelves in March, whereas the Aviator will be launched in April. The delay in getting some LTE devices out was longer than we expected, but hopefully we'll start to see more LTE goodies out of U.S. Cellular in the near future.
So, who's planning to purchase either device from them in coming months? Anyone wishing U.S. Cellular would suddenly blow us all away with something? Tell us about it in comments below!

Good news for all the Sprint Nexus S users: an internal Ice Cream Sandwich ROM has been leaked for the NS4G, and word on the street is that it's the final version, and sooner or later, Sprint will officially launch the update via an OTA for the Nexus S 4G. So far, the ROM is running perfectly and there is no problem at all, according to testers.
Of course, if you don't like rooting or hacking, then it seems you'll have to wait for awhile. The update will bring Google Voice Integration and Google Wallet to the device, so it may take time for Sprint to work all the bugs out. Unfortunately, the thread on XDA was locked, and the content was removed at the request of mrxkills, who originally posted the leaked build. This does prove that Sprint has an ICS build in the works, and it's only a matter of time before it's officially released.
So did anyone get a chance to download the ROM before it was taken down? Any Nexus S 4G users out there that have been waiting for ICS since its GSM cousin got the update? Drop a comment below!

gal·ax·y/ˈgaləksē/

Noun:
  1. A system of millions or billions of stars, together with gas and dust, held together by gravitational attraction.
  2. The galaxy of which the solar system is a part; the Milky Way.

 nexus plural of nex·us (Noun)

Noun:
  1. A connection or series of connections linking two or more things.
  2. A connected group or series: "a nexus of ideas".

Based on the above definitions you wouldn't think that Samsung's Galaxy Nexus (SGN) is actually a culmination of anything good, particularly in the way of an Android phone.  Literally, the name alone would indicate that you would have a billion stars connected together.  But you would be wrong.  The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the best smartphone on the market today - bar none.
After living with this phone for almost a month now, it has not only met my expectations but have exceeded them in almost every way.  I will spare all of the tech specs as the SGN has been in the public eye for quite some time now, and I will largely review the phone on its day-to-day merits for real world use.  My must have apps are: Google Voice, K-9 for work email, AndChat for always-on IRC connectivity, Plume for Tweeting, Catch Notes,  Facebook, and all other Google services.
The first thing you will notice about the SGN is that it looks like a smaller brother to its Honeycomb forerunners, i.e. no physical buttons.  No, Android 4.0 has eschewed the buttons for a cleaner look and a better way for landscape to portrait screen orientation that moves the buttons with the phone.  There is a downside however, for those who depended on the 'magnifying glass' button for search it has been replaced by a Google search box on the main screen.

The second thing?  The Screen is HD Super AMOLED.  This.  Thing.  Is.  For.  Real.  I won't bore you with the specs but here they are if you need confirmation.  Just before getting the SGN, I briefly flirted with an iPhone 4 as a backup phone and the SGN makes the Retina Display look second rate at best.  The viewing angles of this device are marvelous as is the resolution: a proper 1280x720 pixels.  Movies look gorgeous, especially those from the PIXAR family and applications look vibrant and almost have a 3D like quality to them.
As with most of the Samsung Galaxy phones, the lock screen will be familiar and the volume buttons, but there is some strange placement afoot.  Namely the charging port and 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom of the phone.  I use to have the Samsung Fascinate and they were on top of that device.  The top is a much better place to have any cables/wires coming from as they will not get in the way of putting the phone in normal portrait mode, like say, in a windshield holder.  The power button is on the upper left side all by its lonesome.  The actual heft of the device is one that is much lighter than it looks but that's to blame/credit on the plastic body.  While I do prefer the design and the materials of the iPhone 4, I was always very deliberate when using it because I was afraid of dropping it.  I do not like having cases on my phones so while the SGN does not feel like it will shatter from a three foot fall, I still handle it very gingerly.  But even with the larger size the phone feels very thin and light and not as large as my old Motorola Droid X or my very old HTC HD2.

Some other niggles with quality and build is the back battery door.  It is very thin and flimsy and I have already bent one of the tabs on the bottom of that keeps it locked.  So be very careful while exchanging batteries.  Which brings me to my next point.  You will be changing out the battery if you are a normal to heavy user.  Regularly.  When I got my phone, I immediately bought the battery charger that came with an extra battery.  Then I bought two more batteries from a Twitter friend of mine who bought the extended batteries for his and didn't need the standard ones anymore.  I was thinking of the extended batts but didn't want the extra thickness.  So I now have four batteries total that I keep in a very thin case that can fit into any jacket and can go for about two days without any external charging.  The Verizon 4G is spotty at best and I have only used it a few times, but mainly just to check the speed.  But boy, is it FAST!  I have seen downloads as fast as 35mbps and it can make your SGN double as a hand warmer when activated.  I do have PDAnet installed so I occasionally use it for wired tethering, and in this case is very helpful since phone can be charged at the same time.
While trying to get as much battery life as possible, I sometimes turned off the auto-sync, but what's the upside to a smartphone that is not constantly getting data and updates?  So now I turn it off only when I am at my computer to not duplicate email alerts, etc.
Okay, now for the software.  Android 4.0 AKA Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) is everything I wanted in a smartphone.  While I have been recommending Android to many people, I still tell some to get an iPhone if they just "want it to work".  And ICS is the first version of the software that truly feels like production software and not a Beta that is meant to be forgiven from the onset.  Just like a proper desktop OS, the addition of folders has saved screen real estate and helps organize applications for easy look up.  And now that my Motorola XOOM was blessed with ICS, I have a double helping of goodness.
The browser is finally like a true mobile version of Chrome.  The menu button gives context for bookmarks and sharing options and even a new feature "Request desktop site" as well as the way to access the Settings.  The address bar button gives you options for "add a tab" and bookmarks.  You can also view other browser sessions as thumbnails with the same button.   Also, you can no longer just long press the screen to add widgets.  These are now found along with all of the other applications just a swipe away.  Long presses now just give you a way to change wallpapers.

The notifications are now easier to delete as they can now be swiped away from the window shade, while the screen is locked.  This makes it much easier to interact with the phone when just looking at the screen for the notification LED to blink.
As far as I can tell, the phone feature is very good.  I can hear other callers loud and clear and have had no complaints from others, however the speakerphone sounds muffled and a bit thin.  The new phone dialpad UI is very Tron-like, courtesy of Android's new Roboto fonts.

The camera is good and very fast but not as good as the Samsung Galaxy II's but since I still carry a Canon ELPH 300HS, this is not an issue with me.  And I am never thrilled to see a soft shutter button.  But it can be used from the lock screen now: left for Camera, right to Unlock.  I don't use my SGN for viewing movies regularly (just to show others how good the screen is) and I don't use it for MP3 listening it is a competent media player but not a primary use for me.
This last feature that I have used a lot for this article is the ability to easily take screenshots.  Just hold the power button and volume down rocker simultaneously and voila!  The screenshot saves into its own Screenshot folder in your gallery and it's very easy to show others what is going right and wrong with your phone as well as post pictures like I have done.  No more rooting your phone and sticking your tongue out and holding your arm out to get a decent screenshot.
I can honestly say that after using and owning many Android phones, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the best phone out there right now.  And while a few may come along this year to compete against it, the SGN will still be at the top of the list for me.

Financial service Mint.com have announced a new, tablet-friendly version of their Android application. Designed with 9 and 10 inch tablets in mind, the app takes advantage of the fragments (separate panels) within Android 3.0 and above. It's said that the app will work on smaller tablets like the Kindle Fire and Galaxy Tab (7) however it's not going to look as good as it truly can. According to TechCrunch the new tablet client is almost all superficial stuff and not much has been done to the functionality of the app. Most notably the Mint.com application has some usability tweaks and font changes, or, the stuff that makes tablet apps look great.

BodyGuardz is a leader in device protection. Their products support a wide range of handsets, tablets and other accessories. They offer screen protection to full body armor along with headphones and cases.

The BodyGuardz Armor is my favorite.  The Armor kit I recently purchased for my Epic 4G Touch came with a free screen protector and looks super slick. Like their Clear Skins product, the armor covers all sides, top and bottom of the device.  The carbon fiber pattern is also available in Red or White.
Still in the holiday spirit, BodyGuardz is running a promotion which includes a free set of their earjax headphones with any order over $50.  The best part is, you don't have to do anything special to get them.
It's Valentine's season so we're spreading the love. Through Sunday, spend $50 or more on BodyGuardz.com and we'll throw in a free pair of our earjax Gig Series earbuds! No need to add it to your cart or enter a coupon code, as long as your order subtotal is at least $50, we'll include it in your shipment.
Comment below if you have any experiences with BodyGuardz, but especially if you take advantage of this offer.

Samsung today confirmed one of the hottest rumors in mobile announcing that they would not be bringing the Galaxy S III to Mobile World Congress.  Taking place later this month in Barcelona, the annual event has been where the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II received their respective official unveiling.
"Samsung is looking forward to introducing and demonstrating exciting new mobile products at Mobile World Congress 2012.  The successor to the Galaxy S2 smartphone will be unveiled at a separate Samsung-hosted event in the first half of the year, closer to commercial availability of the product. Samsung stays committed to providing the best possible mobile experiences for customers around the world."
The rumors got started some days ago when it was reported that Samsung was going to sit on the Galaxy S III for a bit in order to tighten up release schedules.  As many of you know, the international/unlocked GSM will typically launch months ahead of its U.S. counterparts.  Samsung was said to be looking for a way to narrow that space a bit so delaying the initial launch makes sense.  In regards to when we'll actually see the Galaxy S III arrive, rumors suggest that it could be tied to the 2012 Olympics set to take place this summer.

This one is coming from Tokyo, as Docomo and Disney have announced two Android handsets, presumably aimed at Disney lovers. First, we have the Docomo F-08D, which will be packing a 4.3-inch 720 x 1280 display, a 1.2 GHz dual-core OMAP4430 processor, and a microSD card slot. The F-08D will be available in shiny pink and shiny white.
Moving on, the Docomo P-05D will feature a 4.3-inch display as well, but with a lower resolution of 540 x 690. It's worth noting that, while the resolution is less that that of the F-08D, this display is qHD. Under the hood is a 1 GHz dual-core OMAP4430 processor, and will be available in pure white and pure white.
Both devices will feature a Disney-inspired UI, complete with icons and additional apps. We should also mention that both are waterproof. The F-08D is set for a February release, while the P-05D will see a March launch. Both devices will only be available in Japan, and it's unlikely that either will see a European or U.S. launch.
So, do we have any readers in Japan that are looking forward to these devices launching? Are you planning on getting one when it drops? Let us know in the comments!
