It’s been an interesting weekend for Android lovers. Yesterday we saw the Nexus 5 leak again in (another) official press render. Today, the device that just-wont-stop-leaking appeared in a white color option. We’ve seen this color tipped in the retail packaging that leaked a few weeks ago, so we were expecting this version to make an appearance. But will it be available at launch? According to @evleaks, the white render came with a date: this Friday, November 1st. Take it as you will.

White Nexus 5 is real, launch date could be November 1

Nexus_5_Leaked_White_Render_01

Yesterday @evleaks tipped us with a press render of the Nexus 5, and today they have done it again, but this time our favorite new phone is dressed in white. This confirms the leak we saw last week. However, there is one difference, only the back of the phone is in white while the front remains black. Looks pretty cool doesn’t it?

There is also one more juicy bit of information and that is a date of November 1 was revealed. We can only assume this is the date that the Nexus 5 will become available, but it could be just the announcement date. It could also mean the announcement and the launch because Google could make it available in the Play Store immediately after the announcement. As always, stay tuned.

BBM for Android wait list requirement drops
Oct 27th 2013, 16:45, by Robert Nelson

After a series of rumors and leaks that were followed by a delay caused by an apk leak, BlackBerry finally launched BBM for Android last week. The app began with a slow rollout that required a wait list. But even with that list, BlackBerry seems to have moved users through rather quickly. There was mention of 5 million users having downloaded the app shortly after launch, and now it looks like the next milestone has been achieved.

The folks at BlackBerry have dropped the wait list requirement. Basically, users can now sign up at will and begin chatting on BBM. This of course, comes along with further word of the 10 million milestone. While there was no specifics in terms of the number, the Play Store listing is showing the installs as being above the 10 million mark. Specifically, as sitting somewhere in the 10 – 50 million milestone.

While the initial release was something many had been waiting for, we cannot help but wonder how many of these 10 million (plus) installations will convert into regular users. Without trying to bash BlackBerry, or BBM by itself, we can say that we know more than a few personally who downloaded the app for the sole reason of getting a PIN and testing the app. And in that group, many of those have already uninstalled.

If you happen to fall into the category of actually using BBM, we would love to hear the reason. Catching up with older friends, catching up with friends that are still rocking a BlackBerry, or possibly BBM is offering something that other messaging platforms have yet to offer you personally. As for us, BBM seems solid enough, however while it was gone cross platform, there is one platform still missing — the desktop. Now, if we could just move past this fake review controversy.

From the Editor's Desk

So it's been a couple weeks since we last chatted. Thank the cold rains in London and the allergens in Florida for that, I suppose. But here we are, back again. And things are about to get crazy.

I'm on my way to San Francisco today for the inaugural Samsung Developers Conference. Android Central is the official community partner for the event. And seeing as how Samsung's doing something new (by throwing this little party in the first place), we figured we'd step up our game as well.

So you'll be getting live coverage from us Monday and Tuesday. That includes not only liveblogging the keynote — but we'll be streaming it online as well. Plus, we'll have three hours of live video coverage on top of that. We'll be doing a couple live podcasts, and interviews from the conference.

So join myself and Android Martonik. This is gonna be fun. It's all going down at www.androidcentral.com/sdc13.

A few other thoughts runnin' through my head ...

Android 4.3 test firmware for Galaxy Note 2 leaks out
Oct 27th 2013, 16:39, by Andrew Martonik

Samsung Galaxy Note 2

New interface elements and features borrowed from the Note 3 included

Samsung has stated that it's on track to have a Galaxy Gear-supporting update ready for the Galaxy Note 2 by year's end, and it looks based on a leak today that that update will also be to Android 4.3. A full build of test firmware for the international (GT-N7100) variant of the Galaxy Note 2 has leaked, giving us a look at a mid-cycle but relatively complete build.

The firmware has a new interface that draws from what's seen on the Galaxy S4 and Note 3, and includes new features like Samsung Knox and Samsung Wallet. It is said that Samsung is pretty rapidly working on the software and new builds are coming out every two days, so things are likely to change some between now and the official release.
