Huawei Ascend P6 vs. iPhone 4S

Is it borrowing designs, or just inspiration? Some of the similarities are surprising.

It's no secret that there are design similarities between the Huawei Ascend P6 and the iPhone, but how similar are they? Well naturally the screen sizes and operating systems differentiate them pretty well, but there are certainly many points where the likeness between the two is uncanny.

Particularly, you can see almost exact similarities with the metal banding around the sides, the camera and speaker grille at the top of the phones. The similarities go further with an iPhone 5, which is simply taller and thinner and therefore looks more like a typical 16:9 Android phone to begin with.

Stick with us after the break for a full gallery of the Huawei Ascend P6 with an iPhone 4S.

Motorola DROID Ultra unboxing and first impressions
Aug 15th 2013, 17:26, by Cory Gunther

The brand new lineup of Motorola DROID smartphones are set to march into Verizon Wireless stores and reach the shelves later this month. Confirmed for August 20th the brand new DROID Ultra and DROID MAXX are quite the impressive pair, coming with 5-inch displays and a brand new 10 megapixel “Clear Pixel” camera, we’re taking a first look at the retail DROID Ultra.

The DROID Ultra and MAXX are selling in waves from Verizon’s online store, and shipping dates have already been pushed back a week. You’ll need to run into your nearest store come August 20th if you want to get your hands on one. Surely you’ve seen the teaser commercials the past few weeks, and now we’re getting our hands all over the new phone so read on to see what we think.

acIMG_8539

The entire family will be the Ultra, MAXX, and the new Mini, following lasts years RAZR HD, MAXX HD, and DROID M. Everything has been improved this time around, and that familiar Kevlar look is back to rock the DROIDs. In the DROID Ultra and MAXX we’re working with a 5-inch 1280 x 720p HD display, no 1080p here, but Moto says that will help out on battery life. To be honest the screen still looks crisp, sharp, and quite excellent.

Under the display is Moto and Qualcomm’s joint effort with the X8 Computing system. Which is the dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor along with some extra GPU cores, and two cores for voice and computer learning. Running at 1.7 GHz with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, here’s a quick video for an idea on the hardware.

We’ll be digging through the software and all those “touchless controls”, voice commands, always listening features, and Motorola Assist in our full review, which are all quite similar to the Moto X. In case you missed it, take a peek at our Moto X review for an idea of what to expect.

As far as initial impressions go, the Motorola Ultra is a solid and well rounded device. The thin design and rounded edges make it comfortable to hold, but it’s rather slippery. The fake Kevlar look covered in plastic isn’t our favorite, but it still feels extremely durable and well made. Running on the X8 computing system the smartphone is fast and fluid, and just because it’s a dual-core doesn’t mean it’s underpowered. We ran a quick benchmark just for fun but will be digging into everything in a full review coming soon.

Check out the additional pictures and drop us a comment below if you have any questions on the new Moto DROID.

Yahoo's redesigned Weather app arrives for Android users
Aug 15th 2013, 16:50, by Robert Nelson

It looks like today happens to be a day when apps that were once iOS only arrive for Android users. Earlier today we saw the release of a game called Dots and now it looks like the Yahoo! Weather app has also arrived. Well, specifically, the redesigned Yahoo! Weather app that arrived for iOS a little while back. That said, the Yahoo! Weather app has arrived as one would expect — by way of the Google Play Store and for free.

With that in mind, we installed the app to give it a look and must admit, we were pleasantly surprised. Yahoo! Weather ties in with images from Flickr which makes it rather nice to look at. The images are also connected to your location, which for us meant a nice image of a kiteboarder from a beach about a mile down the road.

The app launches with a display of the weather and shows the basics such as current temperature along with the daily high and low and current forecast (which for us happens to be partly cloudy).

A swipe up brings much more in terms of detail. From here you can get the 5 or 10-day forecast as well as a breakdown of the hourly weather for the next few hours. Further scrolling brings more details to include the current feels like temperature, humidity, visibility and UV index. There are also maps, wind pressure, precipitation and sun and moon charts. You can get a look a the presentation in the gallery sitting above.

Otherwise, there are also a handful of widgets available. In fact, it seems there should be enough widget options for just about any size or style preference. You can get a look at six of those widgets in the above screenshots. That all being said, those looking to check out the app can grab it anytime from the Google Play Store.

Which smartphone has the best battery?
Aug 15th 2013, 17:01, by Sterling Keys

Batteries are a main contender for many people when it comes to what kind of a smartphone they are picking. Several companies boast the specs while some hide them under the rug and hope that everything else will detract from their battery. One thing for sure, everybody could always use a little more juice during the day whether that be through bringing an extra battery pack or charger with them wherever they may be.

Sony Honami may shoot 4K video, according to promotional material
Aug 15th 2013, 17:35, by Nate Swanner

sony-honami-4k-slide-lead

If you've ever laid eyes on a 4K television, you know how stunning it really is. Many premium TVs are currently being shipped as 4K devices, which is great for consumers, especially in the long run. The question then becomes which content will take advantage the revolution in resolution.

Sony, who has their own 4K TV sets, may be putting the ability to shoot 4K video in your pocket. A promotional slide, which notes the best way to get 4K videos on your TV is "by shooting videos with a 4K phone”, was leaked on Chinese social networking site Weibo. That same set of slides also discusses a 20-megapixel Exmor sensor for the Honami, which a Taiwanese site may have leaked previously.

As Engadget points out, the 4,000 x 2,000 resolution noted by the slide is a bit off from the resolution Sony has chosen for their 4K TVs, but that's of little concern. We're as bit more concerned with how well a mobile device can effectively shoot 4K videos. Sony is great with mobile cameras and sensors, but 4K is an ambitious feat.

In looking at the slide, one thing stands out for us: Xperia. We’ve heard the Honami referred to as the “Xperia i1″, but this is the first instance of any promotional material noting a new Sony Xperia device (that isn’t the Xperia Z Ultra).

We routinely see issues with 1080p video shot on mobile devices, as problems such as skipping and stuttering during movement of the device or picture are noticeable. If sony has 4K figured out for mobile video, the already impressive Honami may have just become a must-have for mobile video fanatics.
