| Samsung NX2000 Android-powered camera image leaks Posted: 12 Apr 2013 11:24 AM PDT We all know Samsung has just about every smartphone and tablet size imaginable covered, and now it looks like they’ll be taking their efforts deeper into Android-powered cameras. We’ve been hearing reports that the company has plans to release several more Android cameras to follow up the Samsung Galaxy Camera, and today we could have our first look at their mirrorless NX2000.
Rumors suggest Samsung has been working hard on their next array of NX cameras, many of which will be mirrorless and run on either Android or their own homegrown Tizen operating system. The camera shown in the image above is a unreleased camera many are calling the NX2000, but for now this is just a rumor. Right out of the gate you’ll notice this certainly isn’t like the Galaxy Camera and that massive 4.8-inch screen running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Instead it could be a more traditional camera setup but still be running on Android. As you can see in the image above there’s obviously what looks like Samsung’s TouchWiz style Android home button right on the device, so that’s the first giveaway. However, the Galaxy Camera is all touchscreen so we aren’t completely sold just yet. Reports from Photorumors supposedly have confirmed it is the mirrorless NX2000, and it’s either Android or Tizen on board. With the Galaxy Camera still being quite new and the WiFi model only just launching this month, could we really see another Android-powered camera from Samsung already? | Facebook Home available now on the Google Play Store Posted: 12 Apr 2013 10:22 AM PDT Get excited folks because Facebook Home is finally here for a select few. We all knew that Facebook Home would arrive today, and now it appears to finally be available. This morning we reported that both Facebook and their messenger apps received updates prepping for Home, and now Home has just hit the Play Store – although it appears to be slowly rolling out.
Facebook has it available for install right on their website, but something didn’t go as planned. Doing a search in the Play Store isn’t getting any results, but the link below is working for a select few at the moment. We’ve received a few tips from readers that have managed to already install Facebook Home, but so far the link still appears to only be working for a some. Expect it to be readily available shortly. For those that missed the announcement, Facebook confirmed Home would hit the Play Store today, April 12th, but only for a limited amount of devices. Today it should support phones like the HTC One and the One X, Samsung’s Galaxy S III and Note II, and others will be coming soon. The team promises multiple updates, at least once a month, and additional device support should arrive at a quick pace. Have you been able to get Facebook Home yet from the Google Play Store? | Twitter set to make music social with a new app this weekend Posted: 12 Apr 2013 09:49 AM PDT Lately we’ve been hearing reports and rumors that the folks from Twitter are getting into one more market soon. That being the music industry, which is a huge part of Twitter on a second-by-second basis. Earlier this month we reported on rumors that Twitter was planning a new music discovery and search Twitter app, and now we’re hearing it will be launched this weekend.
Multiple reports have hit the wires the past few days claiming during the upcoming Coachella event this weekend is when Twitter will make their splash. So far we still don’t know exactly what the new music service will be all about, but we have a feeling Twitter might shun Android and launch on iOS only, again, at first. According to Mashable this is all but confirmed. And big celebrities like Ryan Seacrest of American Idol have been using and tweeting about it all week. Oh and the music discovery platform We Are Hunted just joined Twitter, even though Twitter acquired the company back last year. It looks like everything is lined up and ready to go. Some stated today we’d be getting the official announcement, so we’ll stay tuned for more details. Either way it looks like the massive music festival in California will be the platform in which we learn the first of many details. Twitter’s latest addition, Vine, is still iOS only so don’t get your hopes up for Twitter Music being available on Android at launch. | Verizon Wireless upgrade cycle increased to 24-months Posted: 12 Apr 2013 09:25 AM PDT If you happen to be a Verizon Wireless subscriber, moving forward you will be waiting a bit longer for an upgrade. Coming by way of a recent announcement, Verizon Wireless has said they are extending the upgrade eligibility to the end of the 24th month. For those not familiar with the current set-up, Verizon customers had been eligible to upgrade after the 20th month.
Basically, moving forward you will have to wait an additional four months to upgrade. Or more to the point, to the time when your two-year agreement is actually completed. The reasoning for the change is not all that clear. The carrier has said that “it is not uncommon for customers to have multiple devices” these days and went on to note that “in that context, Verizon Wireless is making the following changes to its upgrade practices.” Anyway, the changes include the following; Upgrade eligibility begins at the end of 24-month contract. Verizon has also said this is in “keeping with how the majority of customers purchase new phones.” Not sure about you, but I was always anxious and ready after the 20th month. Key here though, the first customers that will be affected by this change will be the ones with contracts expiring in January 2014. Other details here note that customers who still have “New Every Two” credits available will need to use them before April 15, 2013. In this case, they are now use or lose. One silver lining here will be for those with multiple lines. In this case you will still be able to share an upgrade with another line on your account. The specifics here aside, it seems that instead of ditching the contracts, Verizon is now going to make you wait longer to upgrade. [via Verizon Wireless] |
| Facebook Home and Chat Head support arrives for existing Facebook apps Posted: 12 Apr 2013 08:56 AM PDT The HTC First, the Facebook Home phone went on sale with AT&T this morning. We are also expecting the Facebook Home launcher to appear for download in the Google Play Store today. And while we wait for that to come available, it looks like Facebook has been busy updating some other apps. In this case, they have recently updated the regular Facebook app and also the Messenger app.
In these cases, both updates appear to be in preparation for the release of Facebook Home. Beginning with the regular Facebook app first, here we have an update that has added new permissions for Facebook Home. The other app, Facebook Messenger will now have support for Chat Heads. Both apps also have some unspecified bug fixes. While the permissions for the Facebook Home side sounds interesting enough, the bigger piece here is the Chat Head support within the Messenger app. As a recap, Chat Heads will make it easier to keep in contact with your Facebook friends. Essentially, these Chat Heads will appear as little bubbles and allow you to tap to reply and begin messaging. Once you tap the bubble, the messaging window appears and when done writing, tap again to get rid of it. Basically, it seems like Chat Heads will simply make it easier to chat with friends. Of course, as we heard during the Facebook announcement, your phone should be about the people and not the apps, so in that regard, this makes perfect sense. Anyway, while we wait for the release of Facebook Home, take a few minutes and make sure your other installed Facebook apps are up to date. | HTC First, the Facebook Home phone now available with AT&T Posted: 12 Apr 2013 08:17 AM PDT Facebook, during a recent event, announced the HTC First. This handset is the Facebook phone, the one that will be running the Facebook Home launcher on top of a stock Jelly Bean installation. Facebook unveiled the phone, along with the stand-alone version of Facebook Home and were pretty forthcoming in terms of details. Simply put, they offered the specs, features, pricing and release date.
Well, that release date just so happens to be April 12. On that note and coming as we had been expecting, AT&T has released the HTC First. The carrier has the handset available for $99.99 on a two-year agreement and in all four colors to include black and white as well as pale blue and red. For those looking to avoid the long term commitment, the full retail price sits at $449.99. With the basic details out of the way we can get into the bigger picture — whether the HTC First is going to a a good option for you. Or alternatively, a good option for you to suggest to a friend or family member. Aside from the obvious fact about the person doing the buying should probably be head over heals in love with Facebook, lets touch on the specs a bit. The First has 4G LTE connectivity along with a 4.3-inch 720p display, dual-core 1.4GHz processor, 16GB of internal storage, a 2000 mAh (non-removable) battery, 1.6 megapixel front-facing camera and 5 megapixel rear-facing camera. Decent specs, but certainly not what we would consider high-end at this point. | Free-to-play games being investigated by UK government Posted: 12 Apr 2013 07:57 AM PDT Most of us have heard those horror stories about free-to-play games. They usually involve a parent handing a tablet or smartphone to a child with some free games installed. From here the child takes over and proceeds to run up a large bill on in-app purchases. This seems to be a popular strategy, and in fact it was one that was recently adopted with EA’s release of Real Racing 3.
Staying on the topic of Real Racing 3 for a moment, a representative from EA noted that the in-app opponents are a “vocal minority.” Anyway, while these games seem to be generally accepted by those doing the playing, it looks like The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) in London is going to be doing some investigating. They will be looking to see if these games are pressuring the users into making in-app purchases. Or more specifically, how these in-app purchases apply to children. The OFT has said that they are looking into whether these “games include ‘direct exhortations’ to children.” Basically, that is to say, whether they present a “strong encouragement to make a purchase, or to do something that will necessitate making a purchase, or to persuade their parents or other adults to make a purchase for them.” They key here, the OFT also made it clear they are not trying to ban games with in-app purchase. Instead they are more concerned with how they are presented to children. At this point they are making an effort to make sure the games industry is doing what they need to comply with the relevant regulations so that children are protected. So far nothing will be changing and at the moment, the OFT is speaking with the industry and has plans to “take enforcement action if necessary.” [via CVG] |
| NYPD pilot program gives officers a crime-fighting Android smartphone Posted: 12 Apr 2013 07:19 AM PDT It looks like the New York Police Department (NYPD) now have a new tool in their hands. Or more specifically, several hundred NYPD officers now a new Android smartphone that will allow them to do everything from look up a criminal history to seeing if the area has any surveillance cameras. This has been launched as a pilot program and so far these Android smartphones have been given to approximately 400 officers.
One officer, Tom Donaldson, in speaking with The New York Times gave some details on what they can, and also what they cannot do on these smartphones. Given the list of what they cannot do seems shorter, lets begin with that. These devices cannot actually make calls. Officer Donaldson spoke about how the general public doesn’t yet realize they have this technology and went on to talk about how those they stop on the street cannot tell him a lie, because he already knows everything. Judging from the list of information that is accessible on these devices, that description seems pretty accurate. These devices reveal details to include a persons criminal history as well as arrest files, police photographs and even state Department of Motor Vehicles databases. There is also information from other officers. For example, they can see places where a suspect may have previously hidden drugs on their person. The officers also get details such as whether a person has ever been a victim of a crime as well as if they have ever been involved in a car accident. Bottom line here, while this program has phones in only about 400 officers hands at the moment — one thing seems clear in that it is becoming near impossible to lie to the police and get away with it. | Zeptolab reveals Cut The Rope: Time Travel for Android Posted: 12 Apr 2013 06:49 AM PDT It wasn’t a secret that Cut the Rope developer Zeptolab had some new games in the works for release this year, however as of today we are being given a look at one. That game is another from the Cut the Rope series and will land as Cut the Rope: Time Travel. Zeptolab has yet to reveal much in terms of details aside from the teaser video which can be seen below.
Cut the Rope: Time Travel is going to be coming to Android, however the pricing and release date remain a mystery. Even the teaser video, which measures in at a little over a minute in length — is light on the details. It does make it clear (not only in name), that this upcoming game will be focused on time travel, but we were not given any game play footage. Placing this upcoming release aside for a moment and we remember that another Zeptolab release was recently updated. That update was for Cut the Rope: Experiments and the update (which arrived in early-March), brought 25 new levels. Of course, aside from Cut the Rope, there is also another game from Zeptolab called Pudding Monsters. Cut the Rope: Experiments is available in two formats — one for free and one for $0.99. The same goes for Pudding Monsters, that is available for free or in an HD version for $0.99. With that, now seems like a good time to finish up those recently added Experiments levels and maybe even play some Pudding Monsters. | ASUS Fonepad UK pre-orders now available for £179.99 Posted: 12 Apr 2013 06:26 AM PDT As we had been expecting, the ASUS Fonepad has come available for those in the UK. The tablet is sporting a 7-inch display and will be available with a handful of retailers to include Carphone Warehouse, Sainsbury’s and Amazon. Those considering a purchase should be prepared to shell out £179.99. Keep in mind though, as of today we are talking pre-orders. The actual availability is set for later in the month — April 26.
That said, the ASUS Fonepad is powered by a 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z2420 processor, has an HD display at 1280 x 800 with IPS technology and is running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Also, as implied by the name, the Fonepad is a tablet that has support for voice calling. For those considering carrying this around as your only device — the measurements and weight may be something to take note of. In this case, the Fonepad weighs in at 340 grams with measurements of 196.4 x 120.1 x 10.4mm. Other specs for the tablet include 16GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, 1GB of RAM, 4270 mAh battery, GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 and a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera. The Fonepad will be available in titanium gray or champagne gold and is also sporting 3G for your on the go mobile connectivity needs. Pricing, pre-order and availability dates aside, those considering a purchase may benefit from some of the hands-on time we spent with the tablet. | Android version of Rando photo exchange platform launches Posted: 12 Apr 2013 04:31 AM PDT A development company from the UK called Ustwo has announced the launch of an Android version of its app called Rando. The app hit the iPhone about a month ago. Rando is called an “experimental photo exchange platform.” This isn’t like Instagram, it’s photo sharing but completely anonymous.
The way that works is any photograph you take and share with the app goes to random users. You never know who receives your photographs. The only information about the person who took the photographs that the recipient gets is the location of where the photograph was taken. Once you share a photograph, you will receive a random photo in return from some other user. The app doesn’t allow users to like photos, comment on them, favorite them, or share the pictures with others. The app is also the very epitome of simplicity to use. You must send to receive though folks. All the app shows when you open it is a round button in the middle that you tap to take a picture and a submit button. The precise location where the photograph was taken isn’t offered, all you get is a map and a red dot showing approximate location. I wonder if there are protections in place to prevent people from sending photographs of an adult nature out to random users. [via The Next Web] |
| Huawei Ascend G510 and Y300 hit pre-order packing Android 4.1 Posted: 12 Apr 2013 04:21 AM PDT A pair of new smartphones from Chinese manufacturer Huawei has landed in India. The devices are the Ascend G510 and Y300. Both the smartphones run the Android 4.1 operating system and are available to pre-order now.
The G5 10 has a 4.5-inch TFT LCD with a resolution of 480 x 854. The screen supports 16 million colors. The phone uses a 1.2 GHz QUALCOMM ARM Cortex-A5 processor with dual cores. It also has 512 MB of RAM and a mere 1 GB of internal storage. The phone does have a memory card slot supporting up to 32 GB microSD cards. The smartphone has a five-megapixel rear camera and a 0.3-megapixel front camera. It also has a 1700 mAh battery and promises five hours of talk time with 320 hours of standby. The phone will cost Rs 10,990. The Ascend Y300 has a four-inch TFT LCD with a screen resolution of 480 x 800. It appears to use the same processor as the G510 and has the same 1 GB of internal storage. The phone does support up to 32 GB memory cards and has a five-megapixel rear camera combined with a 0.3 megapixel front. | Kakao Talk to launch an Android Launcher to compete against Facebook Home Posted: 12 Apr 2013 04:11 AM PDT Kakao Talk is a messaging app that’s been available for Android for a while and has proven popular for Korean users. The company CEO has now revealed plans to Forbes that the company will be adding a new launcher within a couple weeks to make accessing its free messaging and calling app easier for users. The new launcher hopes to compete with Facebook Home.
While Kakao Talk probably doesn’t have a huge chance of really competing against Facebook Home in the US, in South Korea it has a very good chance against Facebook Home. Facebook reportedly has about 8.3 million users in Korea making up about 17% of the population. However, Kakao Talk appears to be even more popular. Reports indicate that two out of every three Korean mobile phone users have Kakao Talk installed. The app is the most popular service for free messaging and calls in Korea. The service is so popular within the country that local carriers have tried to get Korean lawmakers to regulate the service because it’s draining traditional SMS revenue. There’s no indication at this time of which countries the Kakao Talk launcher will launch in or what exactly will be called. What we do know is that the launcher will be deeply tied into the applications for calling services along with other apps offered by Kakao. | O2 Refresh lets you get a new phone whenever you want Posted: 12 Apr 2013 04:00 AM PDT O2 has announced a new monthly tariff for customers in the UK that want to be able to get a new smartphone whenever they want. The plan is called O2 Refresh and it will be available in all of the company stores across the UK starting on April 16. The company says that this is the first 24-month tariff that separates the cost of the phone from the cost of calls, texting, and data.
Customers will have one monthly rate they pay for the phone itself and another monthly rate they pay for phone calls, texting, and data. O2 promises that when combined the monthly rate the consumer pays will be the same as the rate of the standard plan. The upside to Refresh is that whenever you want to buy the latest Android smartphone, the user will only have to pay off their phone account. There is no penalty for canceling the calling plan early. Once you choose your new phone, you simply start over with a new calling plan and go on about your business. O2 also says that customers who don’t want to choose new phones frequently will benefit from Refresh as well. Once you pay off your Phone Plan with Refresh, the only thing you’ll pay for monthly is the cost of your airtime. Refresh Airtime Plans start at £12 monthly for 600 talk minutes, unlimited text, and 750 MB of data. A £17 monthly plan brings unlimited minutes, unlimited texting, and 1 GB of data with a £22 plan available bringing unlimited talk contacts with 2 GB of data. [via O2] |
| Samsung GALAXY S 4 teardown reveals an easy to repair device Posted: 11 Apr 2013 04:04 PM PDT It is never too early for a teardown video of the GALAXY S 4 right? It hasn’t even hit the market yet and we already have some detailed pictures and a video showing the device completely tore apart for the sake of repair-ability. While this isn’t the first one we’ve seen, it finally goes into depth about the device and will hold us over until the popular iFixIt get their hands on one.
Yup, this isn’t the detailed macro-photography and great teardown work of iFixIt, instead some lucky users already have a GALAXY S 4 and provided the video and pictures to TechnoBuffalo. Teardown videos are always a bit of fun to see just how well everything is put together, or terribly in some cases. Luckily for us the GALAXY S 4 is well made, and fits together like a perfect puzzle. All said and done the report comes back stating that the GALAXY S 4 is actually really easy to fix and work with, and indeed actually is an easier device to repair than the previous Galaxy S III. This is good news for those do-it-yourself types like myself. According to the report little things like micro-SD slots, SIM slots and more can all be replaced with the GALAXY S 4 should you choose, so this device won’t be too hard to fix should the awful moment happen where you drop it and it breaks. It isn’t as detailed as most teardowns but we’ll take what we can get. While we wait for the phone to actually hit the streets check out all of our coverage on the new flagship from Samsung below. | Google confirms Chromebook Pixel LTE orders will arrive tomorrow Posted: 11 Apr 2013 03:30 PM PDT We have a little bit of exciting news this evening from the folks at Google regarding their impressive Chromebook Pixel laptop. Back in March Google stated they’d start shipping around April 8th, but today they’ve confirmed devices will actually be hitting doorsteps tomorrow, April 12th. So get excited if you spent the cash to get one.
Google shocked the Android, and essentially the entire laptop market by announcing the Chromebook Pixel. An extremely sharp looking and top of the line 12.85-inch Notebook with an impressive HD touchscreen display. How high of resolution? 2560 x 1700 to be exact all with full multi-touch. The Chromebook is one of the best looking devices we’ve seen lately, but can the OS handle the challenge? You can see more in our Chromebook Pixel hands-on, as well as a full detailed review. While we won’t get into whether or not the Chrome OS is a worthy operating system for your money right now, we will tell you that if you bought one it will be arriving tomorrow. According to the +Google Chrome Google+ account the ChromeBook Pixel with 4G LTE and a 64GB SSD has actually started shipping to those who pre-ordered. Google mentions that they will be hitting doorsteps as soon as tomorrow morning and throughout the weekend. | LinkedIn and Pulse News join forces in $90m deal Posted: 11 Apr 2013 03:12 PM PDT Today some breaking news has just arrived from one of the most popular news apps for both Android and iOS. That being that Pulse News has been acquired by LinkedIn for the tune of around $90 million dollars in a mix of mostly stocks, as well as some cash. At first thought we were worried, but rest assured that Pulse won’t be going anywhere – at least for now.
After rumors and leaks suggested a merger or buyout was coming last week, today both parties have in fact confirmed the deal has already been done, and Pulse states they are excited to start their next chapter. While what exactly that next chapter all details remains to be seen, but for now it looks like our favorite news app on Android isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Pulse and LinkedIn both used words such as “For now” and “in the meantime” in regards to the fact that their popular app will be around for a long time. So at the current outlook we will not be losing the service, but down the road we certainly could see more than a few changes. So now, why the acquisition? According to SlashGear LinkedIn stated that the acquisition is because they want to be "the definitive professional publishing platform" and that Pulse is "a perfect compliment to this vision." With more than 30 million viewers currently using Pulse this is a pretty big deal. We’re hearing the $90 million was 90% stocks and 10% in cold hard cash. More details can be found below. |
| CyanogenMod 10.1 M3 builds land for select devices Posted: 11 Apr 2013 01:51 PM PDT The folks at CyanogenMod have pushed their latest round of milestone builds. These are arriving as the M3 builds and at this very moment, they happen to be available for select devices. These M ‘milestone’ builds are based on CM10.1, which means Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. A bit deeper on the information, these M builds are sort of in between the nightly and the stable builds.
These builds are intended to be more polished and developed as compared to the nightlies, however they are still not quite up to the stable releases. With that in mind, there are actually quite a few handsets that will be able to begin playing. Or maybe a bit more accurate, a few handsets that will be able to do some testing (and reporting should they come across any issues). The device list includes the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 as well as the GSM and CDMA Galaxy Nexus, the Nexus S and the Nexus S 4G. It also includes the Nexus Q. Aside from the Nexus branded devices, this supported list for the M3 builds include the Galaxy Note, Galaxy S III, Galaxy S II, Epic 4G, HTC One X, LG Nitro HD, Optimus LTE, Optimus L9 and Spectrum as well as the Acer Iconia A700, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and the Galaxy Tab 2 7. One item that was new in this build was the introduction of the recently release Superuser app from Koush. Otherwise, the usual warning applies in that you may not want to use these on your daily driver smartphone (or tablet) and if you choose to do that anyway — you should probably make sure you have solid backups before you begin. Google’s efforts to become the only online service you need continues with an update to Google Keep that adds more features. Google Keep, which is aimed at services like Evernote, is a note taking app which allows you to save your ideas, thoughts and reminders on your Android device and then access them from any of your Android devices and your Desktop via the built-in synchronization which works via Google Drive.
Like in politics 24 hours is a long time in the world of custom Android ROMs. CyanogenMod, the most popular alternative Android firmware, is updated regularly by its many contributors and there is a nightly build system which makes the bleeding edge releases available for download. However these nightly builds can, from time to time, be unstable due to recent and as yet not exhaustively tested changes. Because of this the CyanogenMod team started releasing monthly builds which are intended to be mostly stable and ready for everyday use. These stable builds are made for the most popular devices and now M3, the third monthly build of 2013, has been released for a variety of the best known phones and tablets including the Samsung Galaxy SIII, the Amazon Kindle Fire and the HTC One X.
