Asus makes the Padfone official in Australia

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 02:39 AM PDT

We reported back in June that the Asus Padfone was already available to purchase in Australia from Mobicity. Evidently, only now does Asus seems comfortable enough to share its plan of officially bringing the combo device to ‘Down Under’. The launch date of the Padfone in Australia has been officially set for August 14.

You can get the smartphone and tablet combo at Harvey Norman for AU$999. Just to make it clear, the price covers both the Padfone and the Padstation. Compared with what they’re selling for in the US, the price tag  seems rather steep, but think of it as getting two great devices for the price of one.

When talking about USP, one can't get more unique than the Asus Padfone. On its own, the PadFone is a very capable smartphone sporting a 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display and dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor. Combined with the Padstation, which will only function when you place the Padfone inside, you get a full-fledged 10.1-inch tablet with 1280 x 800 resolution that packs an extra 6,600mAh battery. The fun doesn't end there because you can also add a keyboard dock for that laptop-like experience.

If you're looking for the best deal on the Asus Padfone, the online retailer mentioned earlier is selling the 16GB model of the same combo for AU$889.

So, will you give the Asus Padfone and Padstation a go?

Google Nexus 7 Google Now video tutorial released

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 02:29 AM PDT

It's a new day which means Google has a new Nexus 7 short and to the point video tutorial for anyone interested in more details on how their newly purchased Jelly Bean tablet works.

We have already seen a variety of similar clips that show us how to perform the initial setup on the device, how to customize the home screen, how to use Google apps and Google Play and how to enjoy Google+ Hangouts on the device.

It's now time to look at a more interesting Jelly Bean feature, the new Google Now search function that's available on the device. The 60-second video embedded below shows users how Google Now works and why it can be a great app to use for your daily activities.

What the video doesn’t say is that you'll have to trade off your privacy so Google can offer customized search results presented in such an attractive manner – at the end of the day, Google Now relies on search, but also on knowing a little about yourself and your habits, to provide all that info on those Google Now cards.

If you appreciate the technology behind Google Now, you won't have to wait for your Jelly Bean update as the feature can be accessed on any Ice Cream Sandwich device out there, and we have already shown you how to do it.

Fake Infinity Blade 2 app briefly live on Google Play – do we need some (tiny) walls for our garden?

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 02:02 AM PDT

fake infinity blade android

Another blemish on the reputation of the Google Play Store – a fake Infinity Blade 2 app went live on the Play store on July 28, and accrued more than 1000 downloads before being taken down.

The fake application, a 2.2 MB APK, prompted users to earn 50 points on Tapjoy (paid ad clicks) in order to unlock the full game download. Some users reported that the download never became available, while others said that the 1.03GB file was just "junk".

The app was published by "2011 Chair Entertainment Group LLC" (the developer of the real iOS game is Chair Entertainment Group, LLC) and used the official branding and copy of the iOS game. It is unclear what the purpose of the impostors was. The fake app was free, unlike the real deal, which costs $6.99 on iOS. Spreading malware might be one reason behind the scheme, but there are no reports so far about infections with trojans or other malware. Most likely, the shady devs behind the app wanted to make some quick cash, by exploiting naïve users and an app monetization network that doesn't have a strict partner vetting policy in place.

Infinity Blade 2 is a hit title on iOS and likely to remain exclusive for the iPhone and iPad. As a PSA, if you see a major title available out of the blue on the Play Store, do a quick scan for red flags, such as low download numbers, pricing inconsistencies, and bad user reviews. As always, stay away from third-party app markets, as the "bargains" that you can get there often come with nasty pieces of malware attached.

This latest incident fuels the controversy about the lax vetting policies of the Play Store. Any developer can publish applications on the Store with minimal approval requirements, which makes the system vulnerable to exploitation by unsavory characters. Google has to improve reaction times in these cases (the fake Infinity Blade app was taken down after three days), and more importantly, to impose a stricter screening system for new apps. I don’t want the kind of draconian, sometimes even arbitrary approval process that iOS developers know too well. And I realize that it's difficult, from a technical and logistic point of view, to manually vet every app, but, a human could (or should be able to) identify egregious fakes like this "Infinity Blade for Android" in a matter of seconds.

Do you agree that Google needs to step up its game here?

Wikipad gaming tablet gets official spec sheet

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 02:00 AM PDT

Although it looked like vaporware back at the CES in January, when it was unveiled for the first time, it seems like the WikiPad Android gaming tablet, is in fact, as real as they come and is gearing up for an imminent release.

However, the 8-incher from back then has undergone a bunch of serious changes, both cosmetic and technical, some of them making it far more intriguing.

First off, the Wikipad tablet/gaming console is an 8-incher no more and will come with a more generous 10.1-inch IPS display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and 1280 x 800 pixels resolution. Even though we welcome the bump in the screen's diagonal size, the new panel is set to come with a far less impressive resolution than the 8-incher from back January (announced as having an out of this world 1920 x 1080 pix res).

The manufacturers have also put the 3D capabilities of the tablet’s panel on hold for the time being, but it’s very likely that future Wikipad tablets (if there’ll be any) will in fact be 3D-enabled.

In terms of pure speed, the Wikipad won't break any barriers, but it should do a decent enough job even for a hardcore gamer. The 10-incher will therefore be powered by a 1.4 GHz quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 T30 processor, a 520 MHz GPU, and 1 GB of DDR2 RAM. Sure, we would have preferred to see 2 gigs of RAM under this gadget's hood (or at least 1 gig of DDR3), but hopefully the manufacturers made this compromise to keep the tablet's price down.

A welcomed change made to Wikipad's spec sheet from that announced in January is surely the on-board storage space bump. The tablet was initially planned to come with only 8 GB of internal memory, but now is set to have "at least" 16 GB. There's a strong possibility for the 10-incher to even come with 32 GB of storage space, according to official statements.

The rest of the Wikipad's specs and features are more than decent too, and include dual 8 MP/2 MP cameras, and a 23.46 Wh battery supposedly capable of running for six hours of continuous gaming. The tablet won't disappoint in terms of software either, as it should ship with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board.

In terms of design, things have slightly changed from what we saw six months ago, but the general idea is the same. The 10-incher weighs only 560 grams (by itself), measures a mere 8.6 mm in thickness, and will come with an included controller add-on. This connects to the actual slate with a proprietary connector, and looks pretty similar to the Xbox 360 controller. It features two triggers and analog sticks, four face buttons, two bumpers, a couple of start/select buttons, as well as a directional pad. These all seem pretty sleek, well placed and spaced, but, of course, there's no way to tell how they'll behave in reality.

Unfortunately, Wikipad (the company) hasn’t revealed anything about their product’s exact release or pricing details just yet. However, we do know that the 10-incher is coming before the end of 2012, which means it will probably undercut the launch of one of its most important future competitors, the Ouya Android-based console. Now if only the Wikipad were to be decently priced…

Verizon Galaxy S3 does run Google Wallet via hack [video]

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 01:38 AM PDT

Google Wallet is Google's own NFC-based mobile payment system, which should have taken off by now, at least according to the Search giant's wishes. However, that's not exactly the case, and Google is still struggling to make the payment method popular with the crowds.

It definitely doesn’t help to have to fight against three of the four main U.S. mobile operators – Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile – which are working on their own mobile payment operation called ISIS. That means Android handsets launched by these three carriers do not come with Google Wallet on board, which is quite a hassle for Android users that want to use the service.

Even Sprint, currently the only mobile operator that supports Google Wallet, wants to get itself its own mobile payment operation, although no new product announcements have been made in that regard yet.

Meanwhile, if you have purchased a Galaxy S3 from Verizon, and want to have Google Wallet up and running on the handset then we have good news for you: it can be done.

However, in order to get Google Wallet running on a Verizon Android handset with NFC capabilities such as the Galaxy S3, you’d have to root the device and install additional files. While we're definitely not encouraging you to perform any tasks, it's up to you to choose whether to have Google Wallet enabled on the Verizon Galaxy S3 or not.

In case you do want to use Google Wallet on the handset, make sure you follow all the available instructions from xda-developers, and also watch the video above.

Samsung’s 11.8″ tablet with a 2560×1600 resolution

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 01:20 AM PDT

Galaxy Tab 11.6 mock-up

We knew since last year that Samsung was working on a 2560×1600 panel for tablets. Some thought that this panel would be used for the new iPad, but it was pretty obvious Samsung would want to use it themselves as well. This is not to mention that the ratio is 16:10, which is exactly what this Android tablet has.

We’ve also heard rumors this year about a tablet that is “bigger than 10″ that would have the long-awaited Exynos 5250 chip, which would contain a next-gen dual core 2 Ghz Cortex A15 CPU and a next-gen Mali T604 GPU. The Mali T604 should be at least twice as powerful as the “overclocked” Mali400 in Galaxy S3 (it’s usually how these ARM GPU’s evolve), and it’s the only chip that could handle such a high resolution (2560×1600) properly.

It should be the most powerful GPU coming out this year, and it will easily beat the upcoming Adreno 320 and whatever upgrade Nvidia does for Tegra 3′s GPU. I also see no reason why it couldn’t beat Apple’s A5X’s GPU from the new iPad as well, if it’s indeed twice as powerful than the overclocked Mali400 in Galaxy S3. The Mali400 GPU is already getting pretty close to the new iPad’s GPU. Since the TI OMAP 5 will be only 5% faster than Apple’s A5X’s GPU, it should beat it as well, but TI is using an older GPU, and it won’t be competitive in graphics features.

While all of this has been mostly rumors (except the Exynos 5250 part), the tablet itself has been confirmed by a Samsung document that was revealed in Court, which shows the existence of a 2560×1600 tablet with a 11.8″ display. The resolution is “double” (4x the pixels) that of normal 10.1″ tablets today, which have 1280×800 resolutions. The size is a little bigger, so the PPI is around 255, still very close to what Apple would want a “retina display” to be, considering the new iPad has only 9 PPI more (264).

I doubt the display is Super AMOLED, because that would make an expensive panel, even more expensive. But as long as it has a super high quality IPS/PLS display, then it should be fine. Some people may even prefer it over the alternative – a Pentile Super AMOLED. It doesn’t rule out the possibility of a Pentile Super AMOLED display, though, as Samsung’s demo 2560×1600 10″ panel was Pentile Super AMOLED.

But the real question is, would the public use an 11.8″ tablet? I remember when I first held an iPad (compare Galaxy Tab 10.1 to iPad2 above). I thought it was a lot smaller than I thought it would be, so I think there’s a market for slightly larger tablets. However, it would make a lot of sense to turn this tablet into an “ultrabook” as well when you want to, just like with the Asus Transformer devices. For such a big size, it would be great to have S-Pen support as well. But while these things would be nice to have, I doubt Samsung will add them, even as accessories.

When can we expect this tablet? I would’ve expected it a lot sooner, but seeing how the Exynos 5250 was rumored to go in production in Q2, then we probably won’t see it on the market until early Q4 this year. But maybe we’ll get at least a glimpse of it at Samsung’s event on August 15th.

Apple vs Samsung jury selection completed in U.S. trial

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 01:13 AM PDT

The highly anticipated trial phase in the U.S. legal battle between Apple and Samsung started yesterday and we're expecting it to last at least four weeks during which we'll bring you all the important details of this fight between giants.

We have closely followed the Apple vs Samsung conflict, that spans across four continents – there are over 50 cases in 10 countries already – and we know that the U.S. trial is the most important one for both companies.

Jury Selection

Yesterday, the jury of the trial was selected, with Judge Lucy Koh interviewing 74 prospective jurors, among which one Apple and one Google employee were also found.

Looking for the final 10 jurors that will have to unanimously decide on all the patent claims part of the trial, Judge Koh asked for a variety of questions. The Verge details:

Judge Koh asked the candidates a wide range of questions, from employment and financial background information, to if the jurors had read any books that could impact their feelings about the two companies. Walter Isaacson’s biography Steve Jobs was cited by several prospective jurors; when the Apple employee was asked if the book had altered his feelings about the company, he replied simply, “that book did not change any opinions I already had”.

Koh also took the unusual step of asking what type of smartphone, tablet, and computer each of the individuals used.

What's interesting is that around a third of those questioned said they own feature phones, with plenty of others not owning a cell phone. But most people owned at least one Apple or Samsung device, which goes to show how popular the two brands are in the States. Moreover, when asked about browsing habits, most people said that Google "was one of their primary uses for the web," while one person did say that "[He or she] Yahoo a lot."

Each party was allowed to dismiss four jurors without question, and, unsurprisingly, the Apple and Google employees did not make the cut – even though the Apple employee was dismissed earlier than the Google team member, as the judge found that person still suitable to perform the job without prejudice. Apple however made sure the Google employee was not found among the last 10.

Finally, the jury in the Apple vs Samsung case has been completed: "made up of seven men and three women of varying backgrounds, levels of expertise and personal technological inclinations."

Opening Statements

Next up, we're going to see the opening statements of each party, with Apple expected to call upon its first witnesses. What's worth pointing out at this time is that Judge Koh overruled on a Samsung objection regarding Apple's mention and showing of Steve Jobs during Apple's opening presentation:

Samsung’s counsel said it feared raising Jobs would turn the trial into a “popularity contest”, but Koh overruled the objection; the fate of the company’s own presentation slides will be decided in a hearing tomorrow morning.

During the pre-trial phase of the case, the same Judge ruled that Samsung can't bring up Jobs's "thermonuclear war" on Android quotes, as the case is not about Jobs.

However, Apple intends to show various images that include Jobs and are relevant to Apple's patent claims. Judge Koh found those images to be "relevant to Apple's iPhone design patent and trade dress claims and [are] not unduly prejudicial." The images in question show Jobs at MacWorld 2007 announcing the iPhone, in 2010 showing the iPad, but also highlight an exhibition dedicated to Jobs by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

We'll be back with more Apple vs Samsung tidbits in the following days, throughout the trial.

Introducing Friday, the app that streamlines your lifestyle

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 12:48 AM PDT

Every once in a while, an app comes along with such ingenuity and intuition, that it makes its audience pause and reflect on how integral smartphones have become in our daily lives. The creative app I’m about to share with you is one such app and believe me, it won’t disappoint that headline!

Friday, as noted by its developers, “changes the way you use your android. It captures your entire life through your phone and builds a beautiful timeline of your life.” In essence, it’s a bit like using Facebooks’ notorious Timeline but as a separately functioning Android app. This can be handy for those of us who stay on the move, but want to tweak our lifestyles for maximum efficiency which results in more productivity.

Friday has an applet’s feature so 3rd party developers can extend the service to greater functionality beyond the original concept. The downside is there’s only one applet available at the moment, but that list should grow pending Friday’s popularity growth. In addition, all the well-known social media sites can be added to help Friday track your movements and build a personalized portfolio.

When you have enough data stored in the app, you can then query it for some concise answers on where to better your life. The best way to describe Friday is how it’s developers mention it: A passive auto journal. Friday is a free app and comes with a fresh update as of 30 July.

iPhone 5 event set for September 12, release date set for following weeks

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 12:07 AM PDT

The iPhone 5, which is what tech blogs and media still call the sixth-generation iOS smartphone, is expected to be unveiled at some point this fall, but the device may hit stores a lot sooner than mid-October, which is when the new iPhone was believed to arrive.

According to Reuters, Apple is going to hold a special September 12 event during which the company will introduce the new iPhone model. However, that September 12 date may "shift, the source said on condition of anonymity.”

In case Apple does indeed announce new products on September 12, then we'd expect them to see them in stores up to 10 days later so the new iPhone could start selling around September 21, which is a Friday.

"The fifth iteration of the device that helped revolutionize the mobile industry" – even Reuters counts the sixth iPhone Apple is about to launch as the fifth version – is expected to feature a "thinner, larger screen and a smaller dock connector," according to sources and analysts.

Meanwhile, iLounge has gathered more information on what's coming from Cupertino this year, and we could see Apple’s fall event star a variety of products, including new iPhone, iPod and iPad models.

iPhone

The new iPhone should be launched in the third week of September, or even a little later, if Apple "waits to build additional inventory," but according to the publication the device should definitely be released during that month.

In addition to a brand new iPhone, Apple is also said to launch two new cases specifically created for the new iPhone, including a bumper-like case and a yet-to-be-revealed case that "will have a major impact on the accessory market if released."

iPod

In addition to the new iPhone, Apple is also rumored to launch an iPod touch that will offer the same features the new iOS smartphone will bring – minus the actual phone features. The new iPod touch should sport a bigger display and a more powerful processor.

Apple is also rumored to unveil a new iPod nano model, one that would feature a complete redesign

iPad

Finally, Apple is also said to unveil a new iPad Mini model, the 7.85-inch tablet we have talked about in the past. The device could ship by November, alongside special iPad Mini cases including the iPad Smart Cover and iPad Smart Case.

Moreover, there's already talk about a fourth-generation iPad that could be unveiled by the end of the year. The device would offer only small changes compared to the current third-gen tablet, with Apple expected to make the device even thinner and more efficient at dissipating heat. The new iPad design would also feature a small Dock Connector, just like the one that’s reportedly found on the iPhone 5, and a rear-side microphone to help with "noise cancellation or improve audio quality during rear video recording."

We'll be keeping an eye on the new devices Apple launches this fall, as they'll surely become the main Android rivals this holiday season.
