More Nexus 5 specs discovered in leaked Android 4.4 KitKat build

Nexus 5 render

A recent reportedly leaked Android 4.4 KitKat build has apparently revealed more details about the upcoming Google Nexus 5 smartphone, although these rumored specs can't yet be confirmed.

Just like last year, the new Nexus smartphone appears not to be a very well kept secret, at least assuming these new leaks are indeed accurate.

As previously speculated, the Nexus 5 smartphone appears to be similar to the LG G2, although it won't have the same features as LG's 2013 flagship smartphone. From the looks of it, we're looking at a smaller display, smaller battery, and downgraded camera.

Italian online publications Tutto Android and Android World have gone through the leaked Android 4.4 file log that was reportedly taken from a Nexus 5 unit, and came up with the following list of specs, based on the references in the code:

  • 5-inch Full HD display (1920 x 1080 resolution) and 443 ppi
  • 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor
  • Adreno 330 GPU
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16GB of storage
  • 8-megapixel camera
  • 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera
  • wireless charging battery (2300mAh according to FCC documents, but not confirmed by the log file)
  • NFC support
  • LTE support
  • accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, proximity, light sensors, barometer
  • Android 4.4 KitKat

In addition to what was discovered in this leaked Android 4.4 KitKat build, existing FCC and Bluetooth SIG documentation have already confirmed that the LG-D820 – currently the most plausible Nexus 5 candidate out there – will also feature Bluetooth 4.0 LE support, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac and support for a variety of LTE bands.

We'll be back with more details about the Nexus 5 in the coming weeks, as the handset is rumored to be unveiled and launch at some point next month.

HTC One update to Android 4.3 is now rolling out to Canada
Sep 30th 2013, 17:41, by Andrew Grush

HTC One

Recently, HTC has been working hard to get the Android 4.3 out to as many HTC One owners as possible. The update first touched down in Taiwan earlier this week, and shortly after came to Developer Edition and unlocked HTC One handsets across the globe.

Now it's Canada's turn! Build 3.22.631.1 is reportedly rolling out to Rogers, Bell, Virgin Mobile and TELUS users as we speak.

So what’s new here? First we have Android 4.3 changes such as Bluetooth LE, OpenGL ES 3.0 support and plenty of other “under the hood” tweaks. Beyond that, there’s also a few new HTC specific features including camera improvements that are supposed to help the handset take better photos, particularly in low-light settings. There’s also new content for BlinkFeed and a few minor changes to the Sense 5 launcher.

If you’ve yet to snag the update, be patient, as it will likely roll out in stages.

Wondering when U.S. carrier devices will get the update? All we can tell you is that the HTC One is currently in the certification process and the update is expected to rollout "soon".

For those that have already got their hands on Android 4.3 for the HTC One, what do you think of the update so far?

Huawei rotating CEO plan continues, Eric Xu taking over Oct. 1
Sep 30th 2013, 17:44, by Andrew Martonik

Huawei

Three rotating executives from different areas of the company to keep things fresh

Starting October 1st, Huawei will have a new CEO leading the company. But Eric Xu's tenure at the top of the company will be short, because at the same time as announcing his new position, Huawei put and end date of March 31, 2013 on the promotion. It's part of a plan Huawei has to rotate its CEO every six months among three executives, and the goal is to keep the Chinese handset and wireless infrastructure company nimble and fresh.

Along with keeping his existing duties as an executive, Xu adds all of the new responsibility of being the acting CEO of the company, primarily focusing on "the company’s operations and crisis management" and managing meetings of the Board of Directors.

Canadian carriers updating HTC One to Android 4.3
Sep 30th 2013, 16:47, by Justin Herrick

HTC_One_Android.4.3_update_Canada

Owners of the HTC One in Canada should begin to receive the Android 4.3 update starting today. Early last week the company’s flagship device started to receive the update in Taiwan and today it turns out that Rogers, TELUS, Bell, and Virgin Mobile are all pushing the update to the handset. Below is the changelog.

Software update: 3.22.631.1 (573.96 MB)
This update constains important enhancements and bug fixes, including:
- Android 4.3 update

- Sense 5 enhancements

United States HTC One owners unfortunately have to wait as the September deadline was missed; however, HTC USA’s Jason Mackenzie assured owners that all of the carriers are being “very supportive.” While that means a lot for most of the carriers in the U.S., Verizon will likely require an even longer wait.

First Google Play vending machines launch in Tokyo, offer apps over NFC
Sep 30th 2013, 17:06, by Dima Aryeh

The Google Play Store seems like it’s a complete experience, but in reality, it’s missing a big feature. Who knew that feature was a dedicated vending machine? Google launched three vending machines designed to let people download Google Play apps, and all three are sadly in Tokyo Japan. We could have used one near Google headquarters!

The vending machines use NFC to communicate with your device. When you place your phone on the tray, you can start browsing the selection of 18 games on the large touchscreen. They range from free-to-play to paid apps, all of which can be sent to your phone. And if you don’t happen to have an Android phone on hand, there is a Nexus 4 to try out and play with.

But what’s the point? I don’t think there is one, other than promoting the Play Store and Android in Japan. The vending machines will promote apps to passersby and allow people another cool thing to experience. And while they aren’t very useful, I’d love to get my hands on one. They work with all devices that have Android 4.0+ and NFC, so most devices are applicable. Check out the gallery of the machines and tell us what you think of them in the comments!
