AT&T Moto X getting ready to get camera-improving update
Sep 25th 2013, 18:19, by Edgar Cervantes

Motorola Moto X Camera DSC00716

The T-Mobile Moto X received a really nice update just a couple of days ago, mostly to improve the device’s lackluster camera quality. We figured it was only a matter of time before other versions got the camera-improving treat, and it seems like AT&T might be up next!

One of our secret tipsters is part of the Motorola Feedback Network and he has just received an email regarding a “secret” software update for the AT&T Moto X. Members of the private network will be able to test this software and offer feedback, so we are sure we will know more about this soon enough.

Now, we are not 100% this will be the same update the T-Mobile variant received, but we can’t see it being anything else at this point. You guys should be excited. If this is the camera-focused update, you are about to get a treat. We never really liked the Moto X camera here at Phandroid, but this update makes it much better (check out these comparisons).

Let’s hope all other Moto X versions get this update soon! But tell us, do you dislike the Moto X camera quality as much as we do?

Thanks, anonymous!

The Paranoid Android ROM is one of the most popular ROMs out there and has given birth to some of the most popular custom ROM features like PIE and Halo. With Android 4.4 KitKat on the horizon, the Paranoid Android team has previewed their plans moving forwards in one neat Google Plus posting.

Instead of assigning devices for an individual developer to support and produce a ROM which is of lower quality, the entire team will focus on fewer devices in order to combine all of their skills and create “something truly awesome”.

That’s not to say that ports will no longer exist, just that the main team won’t be the ones creating the ports. There’s no list of which devices that will be officially supported just yet, but the team assures us that the next Nexus smartphone will definitely be one of them.

The next step is to “re-do Paranoid Android from scratch”, and ensure that all of the knowledge on the team is used and that features are polished, 100% stable and fast. The team also assures us that the new Paranoid Android will fall in line with the design guidelines set by Google.

Our goal is to stay closer to stock, things must be nice to look at, simple, uncluttered and easy to modify (like not having to sift through hundreds of system settings to add a silly toggle)
Paranoid Android

It’s clear that Paranoid Android wants to grow up and it’s probably being inspired by the recent commercialization of Cyanogen. The Paranoid Android team says that they’re working on an updater and possibly a ROM installer for beginners.

The team wants to attract “normal Android users” (a name change might be in order if they plan on doing that) who enjoy stock Android and will offer high-quality tutorials on how to flash Paranoid Android and offer more support overall.

I for one, am excited at the new developments coming from Paranoid Android, with a new redesign that his Holo-ness Matias Duarte would approve of and talk of higher quality ROMs. It seems as if the Android custom ROM community is really stepping up, now let’s hope that the OEMs take notice of this and produce some much more beautiful custom overlays (I’m looking at you Samsung and LG).

Do you like what you hear from the Paranoid Android team? Which custom ROM do you prefer?

Gmail app getting updated with new, cleaner design

Gmail for Android gets the cards treatment

The Gmail Google+ account says that they will be rolling out a new update for the Gmail app today that brings a better conversation view, better multi-select, and an overall cleaner design for Android users. In addition, you'll be able to tell is sync is enabled or disabled right from your inbox with a new notification card.

The new cards-inspired design is the latest we've seen that has Matias Duarte's influence, and paves the way for what we think is Google's goal — a unified design among all the Google applications for Android.

The update should start rolling out today, and if it follows Google's usual schedule all users should have it in about a week.

Amazon Mayday

We've all been there: you're not sure if your tablet can do something you want it to. Currently, our only recourse is to go online, try to find the answer by digging through some forum, and hope what we found ends up being what we need.

Amazon has changed that. With the new Kindle HDX tablets, users will get a service called "Mayday", which is on-demand live tech support. Tap the button, and a live tech support specialist will be on your tablet in short order, ready to help you out.

The really great part is, the tech support representative on the other end can't see you. Those precarious times where you're not looking your best can stay that way, and you'll still be able to get the help you need (techs can see what's on your screen, though, so keep that in mind). The representative can walk you through the steps you need, or remotely take over your tablet and give you a live tutorial.

Mayday has its own dedicated button in the quick settings menu of the HDX tablets, so it's never out of reach or unavailable. The service is also available 24/7/365, so there is never a time when you'll be left in the cold.

Mayday is easily the biggest and best feature Amazon has come up with for their Kindle tablets, and a real differentiating point when comparing them to the Nexus or iPad devices. An expert who can help you navigate your new Kindle, as well as Amazon, is a huge plus. Amazon is promising tech help in 15 seconds or less, which beats my best time for Googling a problem by quite a bit.

What do you think of Mayday?

Google Voice adds support for SMS short codes
Sep 25th 2013, 17:31, by Andrew Martonik

Google Voice

A welcomed feature that has been a long time coming

Thousands of hearts rose and sank today when a Google Voice update landed in the play store, and it turned out to just be an update to add texting short codes to the service. While we've been holding out for a somewhat bigger update to Google Voice for some time now, we're not going to look this gift horse in the mouth.

The addition of texting short codes means that folks who rely on Google Voice as their primary number can use these codes for things like online banking, SMS alerts from services and many other uses. Previously if you attempted to enter a short code, the app would offer to attempt and send it via the default messaging app and carrier number — while this was useful because you'd get the short code sent, it wasn't from the number you wanted.
