HTC facing supply constraints for the One Mini
Sep 24th 2013, 18:45, by Cory Gunther

This week we’ve learned that HTC is facing another hurdle of many lately, and are reportedly experience a short supply of metal casings for their popular HTC One Mini smartphone. It’s being reported by Reuters that due to some design difficulties they’re experiencing some supply constraints, and might not meet demand.

These new details certainly won’t Help Their Cause with the recent “H.T.C” Here’s To Change campaign they’ve been running, as we actually need devices to buy from HTC. Following a line of other issues and problems plaguing the company, this is the last thing we need to hear.

We’re pulling for HTC, we really are. After all we need stiff competition to truly continue to see innovation drive forward, and HTC’s done exactly that with their HTC One smartphone. The report from Reuters goes on to mention that the company is having a hard time meeting demand for consumers, and their retail partners and telecom companies.

We’ve seen countless leaks regarding an HTC One Max with a 5.9-inch display for more than a few months, but still no details have been revealed. It’s possible these same supply issues are causing a delay to that device, but that’s just speculation at this point. Hopefully HTC can get everything squared away with their suppliers and designs, and get these exciting phones into consumers hands.

As a reminder, the first Android smartphone ever celebrated its 5th birthday yesterday. That being the HTC G1 smartphone. So lets Help This Company.

Speedtest 3.0 set to hit Android this week with a brand new look
Sep 24th 2013, 17:59, by Cory Gunther

The folks from Ookla have been teasing a brand new version of Speedtest for Android lately, and now we’ve learned it should be arriving on the Google Play Store sometime this week. Nothing beats Speedtest when it comes to checking your mobile or home network speeds, but their UI has struggled to keep up with all the changes and increased sizes of Android devices.

Their current app isn’t what we’d call pretty, and usually any device over 4-inches doesn’t scale properly to their design. As a result you have big black bars or a small app in the middle of your screen. For such a popular and widely used app, it’s pretty surprising, and hopefully that will change with version 3.0 coming soon.

The company has been talking about an improved and redesigned app for Android, and this week they started teasing us by showing it off on Twitter. Following that by saying it will be available for Android this week, and then posting a picture. It sure looks good, but nothing we haven’t already seen on iOS.

The app is shown off on the Nexus 4, which is one of the devices that it has struggled to work correctly with in the past, so that’s a good sign. There’s no details on a tablet UI, but it’ll likely scale to bigger sizes without a problem. We’ll update once it arrives in the Play Store. Which could be today, or later this week.

HTC One Android 4.3 update starts arriving in Taiwan
Sep 24th 2013, 17:34, by Cory Gunther

Just this morning we reported on some recent comments by HTC talking about the software update to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, and now it appears to already be arriving. In fact an HTC president just said the developer edition One would see the update next week, and now this morning we’re seeing reports of the HTC One getting 4.3 in Taiwan.

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and Sense UI 5.0 is reportedly hitting all HTC One units in Taiwan at the moment, and a bigger rollout to other regions is expected to shortly follow. So far we’re hearing the update is rather large coming in at over 500MB. You might want to download it over WiFi and then update to the latest and greatest.

The update fixes some camera issues, improves tons of animations and other UI tweaks, and much more. So far we don’t know all the details, but a similar update should hit the Developer Edition soon, and eventually the HTC One for other regions. However, a US launch is probably at least another month or so out, as we all know our carriers take their sweet time. As a reminder a version of 4.3 leaked for AT&T’s One earlier, so it’s at least getting close.

The HTC One in Canada is also expected to get 4.3 by the end of the month, which is coming up quick, so you might want to start checking for updates if you’re rocking the 4.7-inch flagship handset. We like the quick pace we’re seeing here from HTC and hopefully they can keep it up, and keep supporting older devices.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Active reportedly confirmed for next month
Sep 24th 2013, 16:58, by Cory Gunther

Yesterday we brought news that Samsung was planning to introduce and launch a limited edition Galaxy Note 3 next month employing their YOUM flexible display technology. While we can’t be certain of the name, a few more reports have surfaced this afternoon reportedly confirming the news, and it could end up being released as the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Active.

We originally heard rumors of flexible displays long before Samsung announced their new smartphone last month, but as we all know that never happened. Instead we got the Note 3 and Galaxy Gear smartwatch. Well, another source from the Asian Daily claims a Samsung spokesman confirmed the device will arrive next month.

We know Samsung and LG both have been working vigorously on a flexible or “unbreakable” display for smartphones, and it appears that Samsung might actually make it to market first. If the report is accurate Samsung will have a limited edition Note 3 next month using their new bendable display technology. It won’t be fully unbreakable, but surely a screen that can bend and flex can handle a lot more abuse than today’s measures.

Following Samsung’s recent trend of releasing a flagship followed by a mini, and with the Galaxy S4 an Active, it’s likely we’ll see the same here. A waterproof and flexible display packing Note 3. Having a large 5.68-inch display that can handle more abuse than most will certain put this device in a good position to compete. Hopefully Samsung can keep up with demand.

Of course, nothing is official until we see it from Samsung themselves. So in the meantime get ready to pickup that Note 3 early next month from your carrier of choice, or wait for the Active version that’s tipped to be coming soon.
