[Opinion] 19 apps in, a look back at Uniquely Android
Jul 21st 2013, 18:13, by Raveesh Bhalla

It's been just over a year since I first began the Uniquely Android series, and in the time I have written about 19 apps. Here's a list of all of them, and also what I have learnt while covering them.

New Nexus 7 release date is July 30 for Best Buy, alleged ad says
Jul 21st 2013, 17:01, by Chris Smith

Nexus 7

What looks like a leaked Best Buy ad seems to indicate that the new Nexus 7 will be launched next week, on July 30.

A few days ago, a similar leak suggested that Staples will start selling the new tablet on July 31, with shipments coming in as soon as July 24, which are to be kept under locked until launch.

The new Best Buy ad, discovered by Phone Arena, says the tablet will start selling "Tuesday." Considering that next Tuesday is July 23 – and Google's media event during which we believed the new Nexus 7 will be announced takes place on July 24 – it makes sense to assume that Best Buy would launch it a week later, on July 30.

The publication says that according to the tipster who sent the image, the Best Buy flyer is set to run next Sunday, or July 28.

New Nexus 7

While the July 30 date is implied rather than explicitly confirmed, the ad does clearly list the device's price and some of its specs. We're looking at a 16GB new Nexus 7 version that packs a 1920 x 1200 display, and costs $229.99, a price in line with previous leaks.

Furthermore, the tablet is listed as “Google Nexus 7″ and the device is apparently also shown in the ad, and marked as a "new" arrival. For what it's worth, the device has a different wallpaper than the first-gen Nexus 7′s, similar to the current wallpaper of the Nexus 10.

That said, we'll have to wait for Google to announce the tablet to get official details about its launch.

Android World Update # Nemesis teaser – what’s coming new from CyanogenMod? [video]

Nemesis teaser – what's coming new from CyanogenMod? [video]
Jul 21st 2013, 17:22, by Chris Smith

CyanogenMod - Nemesis

The CyanogenMod team has posted a short video teaser on YouTube for something called Nemesis, and hinted to arrive at some point in the future.

Very mysterious and professional, the video doesn't tell us anything about the upcoming Android mod – if indeed that's what's coming new. But the teaser did spark quite a conversation on Google+ where fans are speculating on what the team, famous for its Android customizations, is expected to unveil.

Whatever it is, it certainly is mobile-related, most likely tied to Android. The company shows the locked screen of a handset around the 0:13 second mark, and you can read the word "Free" under it – supposedly the name of the French mobile operator that goes by the same name.

More hints are provided in the rest of the clip, with CyanogenMod clearly saying that things can be better – mobile things that is? The video starts with this phrase: "Nothing Can Be Perfect, Things Can Be Better," and then lists the following:

  • The right person at the right time
  • The right pixel at the right time
  • The right look at the right time
  • The right path at the right time
  • The right spark at the right time
  • The right feeling at the right time
  • The right formula at the right time
  • The right tap at the right time
  • The right person at the right time
  • The right action at the right time
  • The right reach at the right time
  • The right smile at the right time

Then the video focuses on "the right memories," and says that "a new challenger appears," "a new Nemesis appears."

We'll keep an eye on CyanogenMod and report back as soon as we have more details on this Nemesis. What do you think it is?

NVIDIA SHIELD will ship July 31
Jul 21st 2013, 15:26, by Sean Riley

As you most likely recall NVIDIA’s new handheld was originally slated to launch on June 27th and literally just a day before launch they were forced to call it off due to a mechanical issue.

The announcement at the time was simply that the new launch date would be in July, but no definite date was given. As we progressed through most of July without an update from NVIDIA it seemed increasingly unlikely that they would hit their new timeline, but today NVIDIA has finally ended their silence in an e-mail to SHIELD pre-orderers which pegged July 31st as the new launch date.

"We want to thank you for your patience and for sticking with us through the shipment delay of your SHIELD. We have great news to share with you – your SHIELD will ship on July 31st.

Our goal has always been to ship the perfect product, so we made sure we submitted SHIELD to the most rigorous mechanical testing and quality assurance standards in the industry. We built SHIELD because we love playing games, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do."

Suffice to say the extra month wasn’t something that either NVIDIA or those with SHIELD pre-orders were pleased about, however long term this was clearly a better move for NVIDIA than saddling early adopters with flawed hardware. If they wanted to do that they should have launched it through Kickstarter.

Between the price drop and the delay

We’ll have our review of SHIELD in the coming weeks, but just as a reminder if you happen to live in NYC or the bay area you can get an early look at SHIELD in participating theaters.

AA Weekly: top Android news of the week, July 21, 2013

top pic

This week we were treated to yet another barrage of Moto X news, but luckily it wasn’t all that hit the airwaves (though it’s easy to feel like it did). We also learned that Samsung has a few new upcoming tricks up its sleeve and the Nexus 7 is looking like it’s ready to come out of the shadows.

And yet more about the Moto X!

Every week leading up to what looks like the August launch of the Moto X brings more hype than before. The beginning of the week saw an interesting new feature being introduced in the Moto X – the Open Mic. No, it has nothing to do with stand-up comedy or slam poetry; instead, it allows the Moto X the ability to work with Google Now and receive voice commands even from the lockscreen.

Rogers Moto X video leak

And Motorola continued taunting us with some Twitter pics and a sarcastic comment regarding today’s smartphone cameras:

Either this kid is really fast, or today's phones are really slow. #AlmostGotIt pic.twitter.com/mdMEOGqfhr

— Motorola Mobility (@Motorola) July 13, 2013

Nothing was more eye-catching than when the device itself was actually leaked onto the internet. A Redditor posted his own experience with an alleged AT&T branded Moto X and posted some benchmarks. The scores suggest that the processing package found in the X should be high end, but it was listed as a dual-core Snapdragon. So, we’re either looking at the S4 Pro or the S4 Plus – or if it is going to pack current processors (which is unlikely) then we’re looking at the Snapdragon 800 or the 400.

The leaks continued when an official promo was somehow released by Rogers showcasing the upcoming smartphone. It basically goes through all of the features in some depth and is clearly a video introduction to further entice all of us who have been clamoring for our Moto.

It seems our Moto X hype and leak train will continue chugging along, at least until the phone finally gets properly unveiled. If you need a good roundup of all the rumors and leaks that have happened thus far, you can check it out here.

Samsung: 4.3 > 4.2.2

While only a rumor at the moment, news sites are reporting from their sources that Samsung is already getting Android 4.3 ready for their Note 2 and Galaxy S3 devices. With the official release of the new iteration of Android impending, perhaps it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. What is perhaps more important to mention is that Samsung is reportedly looking to make current and last generation devices (Note 2/3, Galaxy S3/S4) able to upgrade to the next Android version after that. We’re all pretty sure they mean Key Lime Pie 5.0 but it was a little vague.

Ready for the return of the flip phone?

First of all, it’s flip phone! Yes, the technical term is the clamshell but the phone design we all reminiscently call the ‘flip phone’ just might be making a return. It kind of did already last year with the SCH-W2013, a phone with a screen on both sides of the flip. It was a pretty insanely priced device and thus it only made sense for at least one person to definitely have it – Jackie Chan.

But apparently Samsung is looking to try again, with a phone currently called the Samsung Galaxy Folder. As a release for the South Korean market, the phone will sport low-to-midrange specs. Even if it is a niche market now, perhaps enough buzz will help bring back the flip phones we nostalgically remember.

The Galaxy Note 3 teasers

We got a little better idea of what the Note 3 might be offering us in a sketch and AnTuTu Benchmark test. A Dutch website posted pictures from what looks like the manual for the new, large device. If they’re true, the Galaxy Note 3 will be in line with all of the new smartphones coming out, spec-wise.

After that, a pic of the supposed AnTuTu Benchmark test for the Note 3 was also revealed. It scored about 33000, which does put it among the top phones out today.

The next Nexus 7 (say that five times)

The leak train started rolling for the new Nexus 7, which might be unveiled along with Android 4.3 at a special breakfast event with Sundar Pichai. Not only were pictures of the device in the flesh leaked, we learned this updated tablet might be coming sooner than we thought with shipments supposedly arriving at retailers as early as this upcoming week – or, at least, July 31st at Staples. We also got a glimpse into what could be its pricing: $229 for the 16GB model and $269 for the 32GB model – prices that certainly aren’t too far off the path of last year’s very affordable original Nexus tablet.

Specifications on the new tablet are still up in the air, but a sticker pic gives us our best clue. If correct, the new Nexus 7 will sport the Snapdragon S4 Pro, a screen capable of 1920×1200 resolution, and a 5 megapixel rear facing camera. It’s looking like a nice little tablet, indeed.
