Infinite Painter: A comprehensive art and drawing tool

Posted: 21 Apr 2012 03:00 AM PDT

Lugging around sketchpads and tons of art materials used to be such a pain. Nowadays, art can be done digitally. With the convenience of art programs for computers, and the steady development of technology, it didn’t take long until being able to create pieces of art became possible from the convenience of a mobile device.

Whether you’re passing the time, trying to put an idea down on paper, or simply having fun, there’s an app that artists everywhere are sure to love. Artists, meet your new best friend that you can carry around on your Android device.

Infinite Painter, developed by Sean Brakefield, is an Android app designed to give you a more realistic painting experience. Whether or not you’re a pro in painting, you’ll definitely enjoy working with Infinite Painter. It’s loaded with several features that could mimic actual painting on a canvas.

Features

Infinite Painter packs a lot of features that will surely come in handy to you. When you are drawing or painting, the type of brush that you use is important. This app has several brushes which are carefully designed to mimic the natural brushes used by painters in an actual painting. You’re given six layers to work with and each layer has a variety of options available. You can Merge, Flip and even Duplicate layers.

If you don’t want to start on a blank canvas, you can choose to import an image into Infinite Painter. Whether it’s an image you’ve captured using your device’s camera, an image from your Gallery, or an image from Google Image Search,  you can use Infinite Painter to build it up and even make it better. You can translate, re-size, flip, recolor, or rotate images using the app. Losing what you’re working on is an artist’s worst nightmare, but you don’t have to also worry with Infinite Painter because this app has an auto-save feature to ensure that your work is always saved.

Another great thing about Infinite Painter is that you can work with different types of symmetry, such as X-axis, Y-Axis, Arbitrary Angle, Radial, and Kaleidoscopic symmetry. The app also allows you to preserve the layers so that you can work on them at another time. If you’d like to edit your work in Photoshop, it will be very easy because this app also allows you to save the image with transparency.

To be able to save your work, however, you’ll need to purchase the full version of Infinite Painter. If you use the free version of the app, you can still preserve the layers of your image by saving it as a project file.

You will surely appreciate Infinite Painter’s features because it has a fluid interface that is sure to give you a smooth painting experience. You won’t have to worry about stumbling around the app to learn its features because Infinite Painter provides a tutorial to help you learn how to use every one of them.

If you want an app that will give you a more realistic painting experience you should try Infinite Painter. You can download Infinite Painter from the Google Play Store.

HoneyGram: Browsing Instagram photos and making Instagram collages on Honeycomb or ICS

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 10:00 PM PDT

If you’ve ever browsed your social network news feeds, you’ll be familiar with Instagram. It’s the most popular image sharing service enjoyed by iOS users. Despite the exclusivity of this service, Android users now have a way to sneak a peek at the amazing pictures being shared through this service. Say hello to HoneyGram, an app with a multi-touch interface that allows you to browse and view images shared on Instagram. Read on to learn more about HoneyGram.

HoneyGram is an app developed by A Walking City, the same developer behind apps like Rev3Remote, Monkey Fill and Cloud Writer. This app basically functions as an Instagram image browser for Android devices. There are tons of great photos that Instagram users share everyday and because of the popularity of the service, HoneyGram comes in very handy especially if you are not an iOS user.

Features

Log into HoneyGram using your Instagram account and browse the thousands of user-submitted images. Narrow down your search with the use of categories and browse images by popularity and location. You can even do tag searches.

Logging in using your Intagram account also allows you to follow and unfollow users, access more tag search results, and of course, view the images that you’ve shared and those by other users. You can even view your photo feeds.

In addition, you can also add three widgets to your dashboard which are My friend, Tag searches, and My Pictures. You can also like and comment to photos and share them to a social networking site.

Image browsing isn’t the only feature HoneyGram has. HoneyGram has a built-in editor where you can create photo collages out of the photos that you find. If you’re feeling creative, put together impromptu pieces of art all from your Android device. Express yourself using either your own uploaded pictures from Instagram or any of the ones that users have submitted.

Another thing that makes HoneyGram exciting to use is its Multi-Touch Interface Visualization. To use this feature, you just have to press the Interface button. This allows you to make some changes to an image by using any of the five multi-touch functions. When you want to move an image you use a one-finger touch; two-finger touches rotate the image; and three-finger touches drag an image to the top of the screen. Four-finger touches allows you to hide an image and five-finger touches reveal all hidden images.

Issue

Despite how great HoneyGram is for browsing and viewing pictures on Instagram, an Instagram account is required to log into the device. And unfortunately, the only way that you can create an Instagram account is through the official Instagram app on an iOS device. Apart from that one snag, that’s the only problem HoneyGram has.

So if you want to have more than a sneak peek of the great images shared on Instagram, try HoneyGram for your Android device now. You can download HoneyGram from the Google Play Store. It’s available for Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Google TV.

Have you tried HoneyGram?  What is the experience like?

Cymera: Suitable replacement camera and photo editor in one

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 07:00 PM PDT

Photo enhancement applications are gaining popularity these days as Android smartphones are getting huge hardware boosts in terms of their camera. With Instagram already wooing the hearts of many Android users with its easy-to-use interface, Cymera is also making its debut with its own set of unique features. Cymera is the latest addition to the ever-growing photo editing and enhancement apps setting the Google Play Store on fire.

Cymera is basically one of the many camera replacement apps that makes any Android user become a professional photographer in an instant.  If you thought Instagram was great, wait until you get your hands on Cymera as it combines tons of new features, including different shooting modes, camera lens types, correction tools, and a whole lot more.

Starting Cymera is as easy as it only requires you one thing and that is your Cyworld account login credentials. Having an account is optional, but it does have its perks, as it lets users avail of photo-sharing options. You can still use the app without having an account.

Once you get past through Cymera's login screen, users are treated to a handful of tutorial screens that can easily be digested in bite sizes.  The tutorials help users understand the app’s main interface.  From there, you will be taken to the main photo capturing screen.

In the main photo capturing screen, numerous options are presented in a colorful Polaroid theme with controls for toggling the flashlight, radial and linear tilt shift, shooting modes, application gallery, and shifting between rear and front cameras. Aside from that, users can also zoom in and out by adjusting the camera zoom levels.

Cymera also offers four shooting modes for users to choose from. These include Normal, Timer, Touch Shots, and Anti-Shake.

The app also comes with different sets of camera lenses to choose from:

  • Basic (shoot one image at a time)
  • Action 4 (creates a collage set of 4 images in landscape orientation)
  • Super 4 (same as action 4 but shots are in portrait orientation)
  • Sprocket (film effect theme)
  • Pop 4 (a photo booth-style with 4 stripped time shots)
  • Double (timer-based, 2 photo shot side-by-side)
  • Fisheye (popular shot that makes a person’s eyes pop)

To view your collected shots, simply select the gallery icon button found on the photo capturing interface. Photos you have taken are displayed neatly in a timeline fashion in the app's native gallery. Selecting a thumbnail will automatically let you view the image on full screen. Swiping from left or right will switch to a different photo in your gallery.

Cymera also offers simple editing functions for your photos.  You can add cool clip art images, frames, stickers, and so much more.  Here are some of the options that users might find fun and interesting to do:

  • Filters, Light Effects, and Borders – contains settings for letting users customize their photos with light effects, filters, and photo borders.
  • Edit – contains settings that lets users tinker with brightness, auto-level, saturation, sharpness, and contrast.
  • Beauty – enables Face Detection support that contains Mosaic face effects, Liquify, Slim and Brightness.
  • Auto image correction – contains settings for portrait landscape, food and text effects.

On the app's main menu, you can also manage your social network profiles for sharing your photos to different social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. Saved images are found in the Cymera folder on your phone's local storage.

These are just some of the many interesting features that Cymera has to offer. If you are fond of capturing important memories of your life with the use of your smartphone, then don't miss the opportunity, as Cymera is a great partner for doing just about that.

Download the Cymera application for free from the Google Play Store.

Game PromoBox: Gamers’ best friend for finding the best and latest PC, Linux, and Mac games

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 05:00 PM PDT

If you’re an avid gamer, and you’re always on the lookout for new games to play, you’ll definitely appreciate a good deal. With the help of the Internet, deals aren’t all that hard to find. In fact, there are hundreds of websites that crop up when you do a Google search for a certain game.

But, having to sift through so many websites, all offering their own version of the best deals, you might waste more time browsing them than you could have spent purchasing and playing a game. For gamers who want to see all the best deals in the palm of their hand, there’s an app tailored specifically for your needs.

Developed by Ogma Labs, Game PromoBox is a free Android app that lets you view and share exclusive offers and giveaway announcements from various popular online game distributors. These distributors include GamersGate, Green Man Gaming, Impulse, Desura, and Beamdog. Imagine being able to find all the best deals–all from your Android device.

You won’t need to visit website after website since Game PromoBox, with its sleek interface, brings all the best deals to you. Look around for that game that you’ve always wanted and you might just find yourself walking away with not just one game, but two or more.

If you’d like to keep up to date with the hottest gaming deals in your location, tap on the Menu key and then Settings to specify your country code. You won’t have to keep tapping that Refresh button since Game PromoBox automatically updates its contents.

If you’re looking to save your phone’s battery and your limited data plan, you can also specify the automatic update to work only over Wi-Fi. That way, Game PromoBox doesn’t have to consume energy when you don’t need it to.

After you’ve installed Game PromoBox on your Android device, you’ll see that Game PromoBox’s interface is split into two. Tap the left side to see game deals and check the latest price drops and discounts. You can even check a game’s current price and its sale price.

If you’d like to check ongoing giveaways, tap the right side (giveaways icon). You’ll see for how long each giveaway is valid, as well as who’s offering it and how many entries it has received so far.

If you’ve found a deal that you’d like to share with your friends, long-press on an item. Who knows, maybe it’s a deal they’ve been looking for as well. Long-pressing also brings you to the game deal’s website if you’d like to browse around it more.

Though Game PromoBox performs very well, one feature that it doesn’t seem to support is the option to change the displayed currency to other types. Users have their fingers crossed that this feature may find its way in future updates, but for now, the developers have already promised deal filters and a wishlist notification features.

If you’d like to start looking for the latest deals for PC, Mac and Linux games, you can download Game PromoBox from the Google Play Store for free.

LG’s superphone D1L to feature built-in wireless charging to compete with Galaxy S3

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 10:01 AM PDT

lg logo

Even though we are still unsure of what the new Samsung Galaxy S3 will bring to the table and how much it will raise the bar in the Android world, it's becoming pretty clear that Koreans’ opponents face an uphill battle against the (over?) hyped Galaxy S3.

That being said, we already know that LG is working on a superphone of its own, with the first rumored specs "revealed" sometime ago. Codenamed D1L, LG's flagship should come with a 4.7-inch LCD display with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution, a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 4G LTE connectivity, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Today a fresh rumor points towards an additional and exciting function. According to Korean website DDaily, the future 4.7-incher should come with built-in wireless charging, a feature that we haven’t seen on many smartphones up until now.

There was Verizon's LG Revolution, if anyone remembers, which didn't exactly sell like hot cakes last year, but that needed an optional backplate to support wireless charging. Aside from the fact that you had to pay for that accessory, it was pretty inconvenient to use and made the phone significantly thicker and bulkier.

The D1L, on the other hand, should support wireless charging without the need of any special case or accessory. It's not clear for me how will the technology work in real use, but, if LG manages to hit the sweet spot, the potential success of the technology is tremendous.

Some rumors from a while back stated that the Galaxy S3 might itself come with a similar technology, but, for the time being, the speculations haven't been confirmed or denied by anyone. In the same report, DDaily claims that the Samsung Galaxy S3 will support wireless charging as well, albeit of a different technology than LG’s implementation. Also, it’s not clear if Sammy’s superphone will have built-in wireless charging functionality or it will require an external casing.

On a different front, DDaily claims that "sources on the inside" revealed that the D1L might be launched in South Korea at the end of May. That's right, launched, not unveiled, which means that the smartphone could be introduced to the public in just a couple of short weeks.

I don't know about you, but I am personally very excited about both the Galaxy S3 and this LG D1L. I am excited to watch these two beasts duking it out for our attention soon enough. Who will emerge as the winner of this duel matters less.

What do you guys think? Is the LG D1L starting to shape out like a dangerous opponent to the HTC One X or the Samsung Galaxy S3? Would you consider buying LG's future flagship if it will come with built-in wireless charging? Hit us with a comment and let us know!

Sprint’s Galaxy Nexus sold out in pre-order, more coming on April 22

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 09:10 AM PDT

It appears the lure of owning a Pure Google device on Sprint's soon-to-be expanded 4G LTE network is just too great for many. The pre-order gate for the Galaxy Nexus was opened just a couple of days ago, and Sprint has already announced that they run out of pre-ordered inventory units of Google's premier device.

The Galaxy Nexus on Sprint came a little bit late to the party, but that apparently didn't extinguish the lust that many have for the curvaceous phone. Four months after the Pure Google phone’s launch, April 22 will be the day when Sprint ships out those pre-ordered units of Galaxy Nexus. If you missed the window, Sprint said you can still claim your 4G LTE phone in a physical store on the same day. So all hope isn't lost yet.

Verizon subscribers may have had the advantage of getting the Galaxy Nexus in advance, but Sprint customers do have a reason to gloat. Unlike the disabled Google Wallet app on Verizon's Galaxy Nexus, Sprint’s version comes with NFC and Google Wallet up and running, so you’ll be able to tap-and-pay your way out of various (selected) stores using Sprint's Galaxy Nexus. Even better, the phone comes with $50 credit of Google Wallet. This is on top of the $100 price cut, compared to customers of other carriers had to pay for the first variant of Galaxy Nexus.

Doing the math, $50 credit and a price tag of $199 for an Android 4.0 device that comes with 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD display, 1.2GHz dual core processor, and 32GB internal storage is not at all a bad deal.

White LG Optimus 4X HD leaked, poses next to HTC One X

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 08:52 AM PDT

lg optimus 4x hd white

“Out of sight, out of mind” is a very relevant saying in regard to consumer electronics. With the latest Android news dominated by the release of the HTC One X and the incessant leaks and rumors about the Samsung Galaxy S3, it’s easy to forget that there are other high-end smartphones out there worthy of your attention.

One such device is the LG Optimus 4X HD. LG’s contender in the race for Android smartphone supremacy was well received at MWC 2012, but the stream of news about the device has seemingly dried up since then. If you’ve, like me, forgot about this device, here is a quick refresher:

  • Android 4.0 out of the box
  • 4.7″ IPS LCD Display
  • 720×1280 resolution, 312 ppi
  • 1.5 Ghz quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB internal storage, expandable via microSD
  • 8MP rear camera, 1.3MP front camera
  • 2150 mAH battery

Bringing LG’s top-tier device back into the spotlight, Taiwanese website ePrice leaked images and a video of the white version of the LG Optimus 4X HD. This is noteworthy because, while the black version of the device is already available for pre-order, we didn’t know much about a white version. Unfortunately, this leak doesn’t shed any light on the release date of Optimus 4X HD, in either its black or white persona.

As you can see from the images above, the white LG Optimus 4X HD somehow resembles the HTC One X, its most important competitor so far. While most of the specifications of the two devices are similar, the LG does have a slight advantage, rocking a bigger battery and microSD support. The winner in terms of performance cannot be judged as of now.

Personally, just from looking at the above images, I feel like the HTC One X looks far better than the LG device, but, as an HTC “fanboy”, my opinion may be a little biased. Either way, this leak couldn’t have come at a better time to bring the Optimus 4X HD some much needed mindshare. Hopefully, it also means that the official release date isn’t that far away.

I, for one, am very excited about how the Android smartphone race is shaping up. Is the LG Optimus 4X HD going to provide a run for their money to the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S3? Do you agree or disagree with my opinion about the One X looking better than the Optimus 4X HD?

Spotify for Android gets a facelift, beta version up for download

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 08:25 AM PDT

Spotify provides an excellent service for millions of music lovers, but Android users haven't held back in voicing their discontent over the Android version of the streaming app. The old Spotify app was criticized for being very slow and an eye sore. Things may change, though,  because an updated version of Spotify for Android made its dashing appearance on the company's website.

Here's a list of improvements that you can find on the updated Spotify app (beta):

  • Totally new app with full support for Android 4.0
  • Top-to-bottom redesign
  • All-new slide-out navigation
  • More social — check out friends’ profile pages and playlists
  • Artist images in high resolution
  • Related artist view

Now that Spotify is fully on board in terms of Android 4.0 support, it's only natural for the app to integrate the design philosophy of Ice Cream Sandwich.  Along with the app's new Holo skin, the interface has also been tweaked. Coupled with the new Related Artist view, the new interface makes it easier for users to discover new music. Navigating your way around the app is also faster and smoother, without so much as a hint of a hiccup, like you often saw on the previous version.

The cleaner look of the updated Spotify Android app allows more information to be displayed, with the menu options being relegated to the side. The pause/play button remains in the interface at all times, and there's now the option to listen to songs with "Extreme" sound quality, which is defined by the music streaming service as playback at 320Kbps quality. In addition, the improved social features of the app gives you the ability to peek at what your friends have been listening to. You can also share your favorite tracks, albums, and playlists with your friends.

If you like what you read so far, Spotify plans to add Last FM scrobbling and folders to the final version of the app. The preview version of the new Spotify mobile app for Android can be downloaded here. Remember that you need to be a paying Premium member to use it, which would set you back a monthly $9.99.  Meanwhile, those living outside US and parts of Europe keep wondering when the service will hit their countries.

Acer A500 and A100 tablets will (finally) get ICS by the end of April

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 07:54 AM PDT

The Acer Iconia Tab A500, A100, and A200 have all been released in the first months of 2011, and, at the time, they were considered fairly advanced pieces of technology. Acer's Honeycomb tablets have been surprisingly popular last year, attracting users with a well balanced mix of high performance, cool looks, and decent pricing.

Fast forward twelve months and you get a whole different tablet landscape, one where dual-core gadgets running Android Honeycomb are considered outdated. Unfortunately, we can't say that Acer did much to change this opinion, leaving its tablet duo to run that old raggedy Honeycomb. By now, with all the unfulfilled promises made by Acer, most A500 and A100 adopters have either updated their gadgets to ICS with unofficial ROMs or they have given up all hope on ever making the jump to the next OS version.

However, just when we completely lost hope to ever get an update to ICS, Acer has officially announced that both the A100 and A500 will be updated to Android 4 by the end of April. The US A100 will be updated to Android 4 on the 27, with Canadian devices slated to receive the same upgrade on May 3. However, the region that will get the official update first is Latin America, where the update will roll out starting from April 25.

For the A500 update, things are much simpler, with Ice Cream Sandwich coming over-the-air on April 27 in all markets. Needless to say, the Ice Cream Sandwich update will come with several important improvements, faster overall performance, a tweaked user interface, Face Unlock, and some other new features.

HTC unveils new cover designs for the flagship One X

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 07:26 AM PDT

There are many reasons for buying a cover or case for your mobile device, ranging from added protection to just being aesthetically pleasing. After all, if you have to shell out over $500 for the latest high-end device, even minor scratches can be incredibly annoying. Even if OEMs claim increased durability, it’s always better to be safe, rather than sorry.

At an event hosted in Seattle, HTC unveiled a new cover design for its flagship device, the HTC One X. While there will eventually be two designs for users to choose from, only one design (seen above) was showcased at this event. The perforated hard shell design will come in four colors – white, grey, blue, and orange. While there is a large cutout for the bulbous camera, hopefully, this cover will provide some protection against the scratches that the silver camera lens casing is picking up after only a few days of use, as observed by a few One X owners.

There is no information on the release date or pricing of this particular case, but will likely be released in-time for the May 6 launch of the AT&T HTC One XL. A UK website, Mobilefun, lists the case as “Coming Soon” with a price tag of £17.99 (~$25).

What are your thoughts? Are covers helpful? While they offer a certain level of protection, do you think they take away from the appeal of the original design of the phone? What do you think of the design of the HTC One X cover? Let us know in the comments section below.
