BBM for Android finally here today ... later ... eventually ...

BBM for Android

OK, folks. Here's the deal. BBM for Android — that's BlackBerry's proprietary messaging system — is finally going to be publicly available later today, BlackBerry announced in a blog post.

Only, things aren't quite that simple.

Here's the deal: BlackBerry is going to release it in Google Play and in Samsung's own app store. (Yes, Samsung has its own app store.) If you've already registered with BlackBerry somehow, you'll be good to go and BBM should work. If you've yet to sign up, you'll be able to today — and you'll be placed in waiting list. No telling how long that list will be.

T-Mobile HTC One Android 4.3 update rolling out
Oct 21st 2013, 16:09, by Robert Nelson

Coming after a small delay last week, Android 4.3 has begun rolling out for HTC One users with T-Mobile. We are seeing reports coming from various users across the US and if you happen to be carrying a T-Mobile branded One — you can grab the update now be heading into the settings. T-Mobile has already updated the support page for the HTC One and it looks like this one will be WiFi only.

IMG_8354wtmk1-540x35712112

Of course, aside from T-Mobile limiting this to WiFi, it would have likely been the preferred method given the size. This update measures in at roughly 560MB in size. Otherwise, this update will have your T-Mobile HTC One going to Android 4.3 and arriving as software version 3.24.531.3. Once updated you will also have Sense 5, which brings BlinkFeed improvements such as navigation and Instagram.

Aside from BlinkFeed, the remainder of the update touches on the camera and battery life as well as the notification bar and quick settings. Though a bit generic in the descriptions, the changelog breaks down as follows;

  • Notification bar and quick settings
  • Battery life
  • Camera AE/AF lock
  • HTC BlinkFeed – Navigation and Instagram
  • HTC Video highlights

Otherwise, the usual T-Mobile update suggestions are in place. Basically, they recommend you are either plugged in or have more than 50 percent battery life and there is also mention that your device cannot currently be rooted. With T-Mobile users getting the update today, it looks like Verizon Wireless users are left on their own. Assuming the timeline holds, Big Red users should have the update before the end of October.

OPPO N1 international rollout getting underway
Oct 21st 2013, 15:12, by Robert Nelson

Following a series of rumors and teasers, OPPO unveiled the N1 smartphone back in late-September. At the time the handset was announced for China with the promise of additional markets later in the year. There was mention of the global rollout beginning in December, however the specifics remained a mystery. Well, it looks like the global rollout is beginning.

OPPO has announced the N1 for those in Indonesia. The handset should be available for purchase soon and it was announced with a price point of 6.999 million Indonesian rupiah. While market to market translations are not always equal when it comes to smartphones, that translates to about 3,765 yuan. Or in other words, this means the OPPO N1 is a bit more expensive in Indonesia.

Otherwise, we are looking at a handset that has the same specs as what we saw announced earlier. This Indonesian announcement tipped the handset as running Color OS, which is a customized build of Android 4.2. Aside from the software, the handset will have a 5.9-inch 1080p display with a ppi of 377. There will also be options for 16GB or 32GB of internal storage along with 2GB of RAM and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor.

Some of the other perks of the N1 include the camera as well as the rear touch panel and remote. The N1 has a 13 megapixel camera that rotates 206 degrees, which allows it to serve as the front and rear-facing. The touch panel is called the O-Touch Panel and it measures in as a 12cm panel that allows for tapping, scrolling and more.

While we are still expecting the N1 to arrive in additional markets, OPPO recently announced a “Pioneer Program” that will allow a lucky few users to get hands-on a bit ahead of the general release. The catch though, the program is limited to a select few and you will need to not only apply and get accepted, but share some thoughts after the handset arrives.

Koush demos surprisingly fluid screen recording utility in CyanogenMod [VIDEO]
Oct 21st 2013, 16:20, by Quentyn Kennemer

We’ve always wanted a way to record what’s being displayed on our Android devices, but the current solutions are all flawed in some way. They might require root, they might not be very smooth, and some just flat-out don’t work. Koushik Dutta is hoping to change all of that with a new feature he’s working on for future versions of CyanogenMod.

Users can start recording their screen at any time using a combined press of the “power” and “volume up” buttons, which isn’t unlike the standard “power” + “volume down” combo we use for taking screenshots. Koush’s method includes the ability to show device touches with an on-screen graphic so users know what is being pressed, and when.

There are many situations where such a feature would be useful, such as tutorial videos, app demos, and getting support for any issues you might be having. Color us excited for sure. The feature isn’t currently present in any CyanogenMod nightlies, but Koush has already uploaded the code to the project’s Gerrit page for any developers who might want to give it a shot. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled to see when, exactly, the rest of us will be able to get in on the fun. Watch a quick video demo of the new feature above.

T-Mobile HTC One Android 4.3 update now rolling out
Oct 21st 2013, 15:56, by Quentyn Kennemer

Today’s a good day if you’re an HTC One owner on T-Mobile. The company has started rolling out their Android 4.3 upgrade, just as we were promised. The upgrade brings us up to version 3.24.531.3. Android 4.3 brings a lot of under-the-hood changes such as OpenGL 3.0, ANT+ support and the TRIM garbage collection system to keep your device smooth over time.

HTC One rocks

On the HTC Sense side of things, the upgrade will bring us updated BlinkFeed features, including support for Instagram posts muddled in with all the rest of your news and social updates. You can also make video highlights as long as you want them to be.

We’re not sure how big (in size) this upgrade will be, but HTC recommends you connect to WiFi, charge your battery up to at least 30% and set aside at least 20 minutes to complete the whole thing. Be sure to find instructions for updating below, and let us know if things go well for you in the comments section.

To manually perform the update, follow these steps below:

1.       From the Home screen, tap All apps and then tap Settings.
2.       Tap About.
3.       Tap Software updates.
4.       Tap Check now.
5.       Tap OK to download the update.
6.       Tap OK to start the upgrade process. The status of the download can be viewed in the Notifications pull down.
7.       Once the download is complete, you will be prompted to install from the Notifications pull down menu. Tap the System update notification to begin the upgrade process.
8.       Tap OK to begin the update process to software version 3.24.531.3.
9.       The device will reboot and begin installation. You will not be able to use your device during the installation process (approximately 10 minutes).
10.    When the system update is complete, the device will boot up normally. When prompted, tap OK to continue.

AT&T expected to join Verizon, Sprint with HTC One Max
Oct 21st 2013, 15:43, by Scott Webster

AT&T is expected to join Verizon and Sprint later this year in offering the HTC One Max, according to a new @evleaks report. That the carrier is lined up to support the 5.9-inch device should come as no surprise; Ma Bell has done a bang-up job in offering great Android devices as of late. Pricing and availability is not clear for any of the three but we should learn more in the coming weeks. T-Mobile, for its part, ought to provide support for the device as well.

Quad-core 2.5GHz Snapdragon CPU spotted in benchmarks
Oct 21st 2013, 15:15, by Scott Webster

The next generation of smartphones figures to get even faster and more powerful than ever before. Not that this is a surprise, of course, it happens every year.

With 2013 seeing the introduction and rollout of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 and 800 processor we are now in the middle of devices with 2.3GHz CPUs. Next year could see things inching forward with 2.5GHz processors. A Snapdragon APQ8084 has been spotted in AnTuTu benchmarks recently with a GPU identified as an Adreno 420.

Qualcomm-Snapdraon-APQ8084

Presumably, this new processor is not only faster but also more power efficient and robust. Given the CPU is being tested today, smartphones from the likes of HTC, Samsung, and Sony could offer the new Qualcomm chip some time in coming months. Out gut tells us to look for an announcement at CES in the first weeks of the new year.

LG Logo

When the first Android handset arrived to the market, it was seen by many as a less-than-worthy alternative to devices running on more established mobile operating systems including Blackberry's OS and Apple's iOS. This didn’t stop Google from quickly climbing to the top and switching things up in the mobile world for good. Now the same thing may be (much more slowly) happening in the desktop world as well.

As Microsoft continues to stumble with Windows 8 and its recent Windows 8.1 RT troubles, both Android and Chrome OS are slowly stepping into a world that was once reserved almost exclusively for Microsoft Windows.

When it comes to Android, we’ve seen several PC-like devices like the Lenovo A10 laptop, the HP Slate 21 AIO and the Acer DA241HL. As for Chrome OS, we have plenty of Chromebooks (and Chromeboxes) from vendors including Lenovo, Acer, Samsung, Asus and HP. Now looks like LG might be jumping into the Chrome OS game as well.

Android and Chrome OS are slowly stepping into a world that was once reserved almost exclusively for Microsoft Windows.

Although LG has yet to officially confirm its plans, LG recently filed three trademarks that are obviously meant for Chrome OS-powered devices: ChromeOne, ChromeDesk and ChromeStation. Beyond the names, we know next to nothing about LG’s Chrome OS plans.

We can't say we are too terribly surprised to hear about LG readying its first Chrome OS product(s), though.

First, a deal has existed since January 2012 with Microsoft that will allow LG to use certain MS patents for devices running Chrome OS and Android. Second, as the traditional desktop market continues to shrink, many companies are looking for alternative ways to spark renewed interest in the PC market.

Of course Chrome OS' marketshare is still quite puny when compared with Mac OS and Windows, but the same could once be said about Android.

As Chrome OS continues to evolve and the world continues to become ever more reliant on web-based apps, Google's cloud-centric OS could see substantial growth in the years to come. That said, Microsoft is still very much the main player in the PC world, and that won’t change overnight.

Would you buy an LG Chrome device? In general how do you feel about Chrome OS, interested in such a devices or not?
