Toshiba Excite Pro review
Aug 16th 2013, 18:22, by Jerry Hildenbrand

Excite Pro.

A Tegra 4 powerhouse, sure, but don't get too excited about the Excite Pro

Finally, a readily available Tegra 4-powered Android tablet — the Toshiba Excite Pro — is up for sale in the United States. Complete with a super high-res (2560x1600; 299 ppi) display, premium sound system and Android Jelly Bean, this is one worth taking a close look at if you're in the market for a 10-inch tablet.

Toshiba's been at the Android tablet game for a while, and their track record is a mixed bag. They get a lot right, especially in the looks and style department, but we've just not seen a must-have tablet from the Japanese electronic giant. They aim to change this with the Excite Pro, but is there anything there to get excited about?

That's the question we aim to answer, as I've been using this one for a bit and have a few things to say. Head past the break to find out more.

Sony "Lens G" QX10 and QX100 user manual leak brings more detail
Aug 16th 2013, 17:39, by Robert Nelson

Sony has been a hot topic for rumors lately and many of these seem to be camera related. There are the 20MP Honami rumors and then there are the more recent such as the Sony Xperia “Lens G” setup. This is basically a clip-on lens for mobile devices. An earlier leaked image (sitting below) has it shown attached a smartphone, however it could just as easily be attached to a tablet.

big-580x481-540x447

We had already seen details about how this Lens G setup would be available in at least two models. Those model numbers are DSC-QX10 and DSC-QX100 and while Sony has yet to make an official announcement, it looks like a few additional details have since been revealed by way of leaked user manual. Or more specifically, by way of portions of a leaked user manual.

The manual shows both models and for the most part they look like they will have similar features. For example, both models will have a power button, microphone, zoom lever and shutter button. These clip-on attachments will also have a belt hook, tripod attachment, multifunctional jack and reset button along with a display panel.

The display panel is said to have indicators for when memory card is not inserted and for when the battery is running low. The other items on these models is the green, orange and red indicator lights which indicate when the power is on, when the device is charging and when it is running video. We have also seen details about how the Lens G will have a rechargeable battery, but nothing indicating what size battery or what life can be expected per charge.

Shifting over to the difference between the QX10 and QX100 and we find that as the ring control, which will only be found on the QX100. Of course, following with the previous leaks that makes sense as the QX100 had already been pegged as the higher-end model of the two. The manual also lists the QX10 as weighing 105 grams with the QX100 weighing in at 179 grams.

We are fairly certain this will not be the last of the rumors on this topic, but we are looking to September 4th which is when Sony is expected to offer an official announcement.

Verizon HTC One to launch with Android 4.2.2, no cherry red version
Aug 16th 2013, 17:08, by Cory Gunther

After months and months of waiting the folks from Verizon Wireless finally announced a release date for the HTC One. We thought it would never come, reports and rumors of August 1st came and went, but today we can officially confirm the day. The HTC One will be available on August 22nd, and now we’re learning a few additional details.

P1110518

We have no way of knowing just exactly why Verizon took so long, although we have our guesses. One possible reason is to launch with Android 4.2.2 on board, rather than 4.1 like the other carriers. Now that HTC’s updated the international One to nearly the latest version, Verizon will launch with it as well. Sadly there’s no Android 4.3 here, even if the Google Play edition already has it.

Many new details have arrived from our friend over at Twitter @VZWAlbert and you’ll want to check out all his replies if you’re interested in Verizon’s One. It will launch with Android 4.2.2, and sadly we won’t get any custom colors. Only the silver model. No black, or the snazzy new cherry red model over at Sprint. And at this time there’s no details about that rumored Blue HTC One either.

HTC-One-Blue-notreal

With Verizon being all about red you’d think they’d find a way to get that exclusive, but something tells me they’re more worried about the DROID lineup than the HTC One. Just a guess. However, they will be offering customization on the Moto X later this year. The Verizon rep goes on to confirm the $199 price is for the 32GB model, and even states there’s no details regarding a developer edition. So that’s a thing.

The next few weeks will be pretty exciting for Verizon users, so let us know what you’ll be picking up, since there’s so many to choose from.

More details emerge about ASUS FonePad HD 7, MeMO Pad HD 8 and MeMO Pad HD 10
Aug 16th 2013, 17:52, by Jeff Causey

ASUS_Logo_From_MeMO_Pad_10

Last week we reported on a roadmap of ASUS smartphone and tablet devices apparently scheduled for release sometime in 2013. New details have emerged about some of the devices. The ASUS FonePad will be renamed the FonePad HD 7 when refreshed later this year and will come with an Intel Atom Z2560 processor matched with either 8GB or 32GB of memory, 1GB of RAM, a 7-inch 1280×800 resolution screen, and a slightly upgraded camera that can snap pics at 5MP versus the current 3MP resolution. The new FonePad HD 7 is expected to ship with Android 4.2.

The second device that we know a little bit more about is the MeMO Pad HD 10. This 10.1-inch tablet will come with an ARM-based processor from Rockchip running at 1.6GHz, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of memory, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and 3G mobile data capabilities. Like the FonePad HD 7, the MeMO Pad HD 10 will run Android 4.2. Note that the MeMO Pad HD 10 was not listed on the slide released last week outlining ASUS’s strategy.

The last device that we have some more information about is the MeMO Pad HD 8. The resolution for this device is reportedly 1280×800 on an 8-inch screen. Other than the reduction in size, it appears the hardware and operating system will be the same as the MeMO Pad HD 10 device.

ASUS has lots of other devices they are planning to bring to market in the next few months, so you can expect more leaks and information to surface regarding hardware specs.

Press adds offline image caching, settings redesign
Aug 16th 2013, 17:19, by Andrew Martonik

Press

Caching saves on data, new settings get you in and out quickly

One of our favorite RSS readers on Android, Press, has just made some significant improvements in its latest update in terms of interface and features. The biggest feature inclusion is likely offline image caching, which will download article images when syncing so that you're not pulling them down every time you open an article. It's great for low connectivity or low data cap situations when you still want to get your news. By default images aren't cached, but you can turn it on, restrict it to just Wifi and limit or clear the cache at any time.

Helping you manage these new cache options is an entirely redesigned settings menu, which breaks up settings into separate categories. Now you won't have to scroll through an annoying long list to get to that one setting you need to change.

There are also a new settings for changing the look and feel of the app, with the ability to show just titles in the articles list or on the widget, and a few new options for readability and accessibility. Press also says that there are performance, sync and bug fixes — although we were hard pressed to find any hiccups before.
