Samsung in trouble for leaking Apple's patent-licensing agreements

As Samsung and Apple’s court battle finally comes towards it’s final days (yes I’m kidding), the Korean company finds itself in more hot water as the presiding judge has asked them to explain why it shouldn’t be fined for leaking Apple’s patent-licensing agreements to a large number of employees and unauthorized lawyers.

In the coming days, the two companies will fight it out over the exact sum that Samsung should be made to pay Apple, after the controversial initial amount of $1 billion was brought down to just over $450 million. While this amount deals with only the patents and trademarks in question, Samsung’s antics could see an additional fine on top of that.

Despite my extreme distaste for Apple’s practices, I can’t help but feel awful because of Samsung’s behavior throughout the issue. In this particular case, Samsung tried to benefit from the information they received from Apple as part of legal discovery for the case by using it in negotiations with Nokia, despite a court order against it. One executive, Dr. Seungho Ahn, was cocky enough to say to Nokia’s Chief Intellectual Property Officer, “all information leaks.”

HTC One successor heading to the big four by the end of Q1 2014
Nov 9th 2013, 17:30, by Justin Herrick

HTC

Yesterday, @evleaks tweeted a very interesting piece of information. According to him, the HTC ‘M8′ (the One’s successor) will be heading to AT&T, “among others.” That mystery phrase at the end left things a little open. So a tweeter asked him if Verizon would be joining the fun and it turns out they will. But not just those two. He said that “all four carriers” would get the device by the end of Q1 2014. This means that HTC would be launching next year’s flagship with AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile right from the beginning. That strategy would correct the mishap of the One launching roughly six months late on Verizon. The given date indicates a launch between January and the end of March. Keep an eye out for plenty of leaks regarding the HTC ‘M8′. Hit the break for the tweets.

Google+ comments for YouTube go live, creator gives his honest opinion
Nov 9th 2013, 17:05, by Justin Herrick

YouTube_comments_new_google+

With comments for YouTube now being done through Google+, not everyone is particularly happy. One of the many that are frustrated by this new system is the father of YouTube, Jawed Karim. Although Karim has not been a part of YouTube since Google bought the site, he voiced his anger about the new commenting system. And he emerged from the darkness and left a comment on his own profile. His exact words were “why the f*** do i need a google+ account to comment on a video?” There you have it. The kind words from Jawed Karim.

The tight Google+ integration has already gone live for the site. It even went live for the Android app without the need for a update in the Play Store. Now when you make comments on the video-sharing site, you’ll be able to share them on your Google+ account as well.

Five minutes on ART — the new Android runtime
Nov 9th 2013, 17:01, by Phil Nickinson

Android 4.4 KitKat runtimes

There are lots of questions floating around regarding ART — the new experimental runtime that's included as a developer option in Android 4.4 KitKat. Anyone can enable it — just go to the developer settings.

As described by Google:

ART is a new Android runtime being introduced experimentally in the 4.4 release. This is a preview of work in progress in KitKat that can be turned on in Settings > developer options. This is available for the purpose of obtaining early developer and partner feedback.

Will it make a difference to you as an end user? Maybe yes, maybe no — or maybe placebo? The short, short version? It's way early on this right now and most of us don't need to worry about it quite yet.

We talked some more about it on this week's podcast, and it's worth a five-minute breakout.

[Video] Google releases two new Nexus 7 ads

Nexus 7 2013 thumb
While most companies tend to focus their marketing on a newly released product, Google’s decided to keep the attention on the Nexus 7 instead of the just-released Nexus 5 with two new advertisements. The ads focus on the content available on the device via the Play Store, with one centered around gaming and the other around reading.

Personally, I can see at least two reasons why we’ve seen new Nexus 7 ads as compared to the single Nexus 5 ad so far: firstly, it isn’t that easy to get your hands on a Nexus 5 right now, at least via the Play Store. Also, Google had announced some time back that they would be bringing greater emphasis on tablet content on the Play Store beginning November 21, which isn’t too far away.

US Cellular Galaxy S 4 Android 4.3 update detailed and rolling out
Nov 9th 2013, 15:17, by Robert Nelson

We learned earlier in the week that US Cellular was just about ready to begin rolling out an update for those rocking a Samsung Galaxy S 4. This one will be arriving as Android 4.3 and given the update has begun rolling out, there is now a full changelog so users will know what to expect. US Cellular Galaxy S 4 users will see their handset bump to version R970VXUAMJA and will be getting a few features and more than a handful of updates to pre-installed apps.

Screen-Shot-2013-04-23-at-3.00.32-PM4-540x314111211211

Of course, as we have been expecting with the Samsung Android 4.3 update — this one is adding support for the Galaxy Gear smartwatch. Or in other words, those with a US Cellular Galaxy S 4 can now get and use the Galaxy Gear — provided they are willing to shell out the additional $300 needed to make the purchase. This update is also adding support for Samsung KNOX.

Otherwise, those pre-installed apps that are being updated include the following; City ID, Mobile TV, MobiTiles, Slacker Radio, TRD, WiFi Now, YND, Mobile Security and Amazon Shopping. With the update detailed, US Cellular Galaxy S 4 users now have two options to consider — sit back and wait for the update notification to arrive or take the pro-active approach and try to grab it now.

The former is the simpler of the two and involves sitting back, waiting for the notification and then following the prompts. The latter isn’t difficult by any means, but it does require the user to navigate to Menu -> Settings -> More -> System Update to get the process started. We have yet to see many reports of the update arriving for users, however US Cellular has confirmed the rollout has begun on the official Facebook page.

Quickoffice update brings closer integration with Google Drive
Nov 9th 2013, 14:12, by Phil Nickinson

Quickoffice update

Google purchased Quickoffice over the summer, but the popular productivity app isn't being put out to pasture just yet. In fact, Google's just given it an update that brings more integration into Google's own productivity suite, Google Drive.

With this update, when you have both GDrive and Quickoffice installed on one device — hardly out of the realm of possibility given that Quickoffice is a preload on many devices — Docs, Sheets and Slides (as in word, spreadsheats and presentations) will open up in Google Drive.

So the merging continues. We'll see how long it is before the Quickoffice name gets merged as well.
