[Poll] Should an Android manufacturer acquire BlackBerry?

A couple of weeks ago, the media was abuzz with the news of BlackBerry’s $4.7 billion sale to Fairfax Financial. As it turns out, BlackBerry’s board isn’t quite satisfied with the deal yet, and as per Reuters are in talks with multiple other companies including Cisco, Google, and Samsung.

There aren’t many details regarding what BlackBerry are pitching to these companies. If I have to make a guess, I believe they would prefer a Nokia-style acquisition where one of the manufacturers pick up their smartphone business while BlackBerry keep hold of their other service like E-mail and BBM. If that were to be the case, a question arises regarding patents. In the Microsoft-Nokia deal, Nokia kept their patents with Microsoft getting a long-term license. In this case, I would presume the patents are up for sale with Blackberry getting a license instead, considering someone like Samsung might be interested in potentially using them aggressively against Apple or Microsoft if the need arises.

On the whole, though, I’m just not sure why anyone would pick up BlackBerry’s smartphone business particularly after their latest quarterly numbers, and several patent-focused acquisitions proving costly mistakes by various  Open Handset Alliance members, will anyone want to take the risk?

If I were any one of these companies (barring Cisco, who might be interested in the services side of things) I would stay away. What do you guys think, should any Android OEM look to acquire BlackBerry?

Moto Maker rumored for Verizon November 11
Oct 5th 2013, 15:23, by Jerry Hildenbrand

Moto Maker

You may soon be able to build a red Moto X on Big Red

Motorola has said time and time again that the Moto X Moto Maker customization options would not be an AT&T exclusive forever, and long-time leaker of things @evleaks says that will come true November 11, when the service debuts for Verizon.

There's no word on other carriers, or more customization options like wooden or unicorn-hide backs. Of course, Verizon and Motorola have made no announcements.

What say you? Have you been waiting for Moto Maker on Verizon, or has the wait ruined it and your eyes are on another prize?

HTC: Android 4.3 update for AT&T HTC One push set for next week, Sprint HTC EVO LTE update to land by year-end
Oct 5th 2013, 14:45, by Nick Gray

HTC’s financials may not be doing too well these days, but at least HTC is leading the smartphone industry in releasing Android 4.3 updates for its phones. The Android 4.3 update with the latest version of Sense 5 has been released to unlocked and Developer Edition HTC One in the US, carrier branded HTC Ones in Canada and the Sprint HTC One. Next up is AT&T. Jason Mackenzie of HTC has announced that the Android 4.3 update has been certified for the AT&T HTC One and will be pushed out to handsets next week.

The T-Mobile HTC One is expected to receive the update by the middle of October while the Verizon HTC One will is scheduled to be updated by the end of the month.

Jason Mackenzie also had some good news for Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G LTE owners. The EVO LTE will also be updated to Android 4.3 with the latest version of Sense 5 by the end of the year. We still have not heard anything about the next AT&T HTC One X Android update, but we’re guessing it will drop around the same time as the EVO’s.

Good news for One users on AT&T. 4.3 update passed AT&T certification today. Will begin to push to your phones early next week. @HTCUSA

note 3 one handed operation

Some say that smaller phones are better because you can use them with just one hand. For everybody else though, having a large screen for consuming media, browsing the web, and being productive is totally worth the occasional feat of finger acrobatics.

At 5.7-inch, the Galaxy Note 3 is clearly a device that's meant for two-hand usage, and while that's not bad in itself, there are times when you have to operate it with just one.

To spare you some of the potential frustration, Samsung equipped the Note 3 with an interesting featured called One-handed Operation, that Josh will walk you through in the video below.

To turn on One-handed Operation on your Galaxy Note 3, go to Settings>Controls and select the mode that you prefer. You can choose to activate the feature only in some apps – Calculator, Unlock Pattern, Keyboard, and the Keypad – or opt for the system-wide mode, which actually shrinks the entire UI so you can reach all elements with your thumb.

If you choose the system-wide mode, you can activate it by making a quick left-right swipe gesture, which is pretty, well… handy. You can resize the shrunken UI to your liking and do pretty much anything you want in this mode, except for taking pics and playing full screen games.

To be clear, One-handed Operation is not original (the Optimus G Pro has a similar feature), and it's not an elegant solution either, but it gets the job done and may be very useful for some users. Like so many other features that Samsung baked into TouchWiz, it's just there, waiting for you to give it a try, but you can still have a great experience if you choose to ignore it.

Have you tried out the One-handed Operation mode on your Samsung Galaxy Note 3? What other features you'd like us to focus on in the future? Tell us in the comments.

Android for beginners: How to delete your Google account
Oct 5th 2013, 15:02, by Sterling Keys

Google most likely knows a lot about you. If you need any indication to really just how much official stuff they have, just check out your Google account settings page and also have a look at your Account Activity. Whether it be checking out a Youtube video, searching for a certain recipe on their search engine, or uploading a photo to Google+, Google knows.  Some people might either be unaware that this data exists or just had their eyes above the clouds; however, it is safe to say that not everyone is thrilled about it. For those looking at a way to erase some of your digital footprint, one of the major steps is to delete your Google account and we’ll show you how.

Oct 5th 2013, 12:03, by Brad Ward

Samsung’s Galaxy S4 is one of the most desirable smartphones of the year, and there’s a plethora of accessories to go with it. Sometimes it can be difficult to find just the right one, though. We’ve taken the time so you don’t have to, and have put together a guide to help you find the perfect Galaxy S4 accessories for your device!

Wireless Charging Pads

Before you can begin using wireless charging technology with the Galaxy S4, you need to have the Wireless Charging Cover for the device. It replaces your existing battery door cover, enabling Qi-based wireless charging. You can get it straight from Samsung for $39.99.

Samsung Wireless Charging Pad

Our top pick in this section is the Samsung Wireless Charging Pad! It features an LED indicator that will turn green when your Galaxy S4 is properly charged and yellow when the device isn’t properly placed on the pad for effective charging. Buy now from Samsung for $59.99.

Koolpad Qi Wireless Pad

koolpad galaxy s4 accessories

Our best bang for the buck is the Koolpad Qi Wireless Pad. It works with all Qi compatible devices and, unlike many other wireless chargers, you don’t need to align your device properly on the Koolpad for it to begin charging.

Keep in mind that the Koolpad Qi Wireless Pad does not come with an AC adapter to power the pad, only the pad itself and a microUSB cable. You’ll need to provide the adapter yourself. However, any regular phone charger will work fine. Buy Now on Amazon starting from $37.

Otterbox Defender

It has a warranty that lasts the length of your device, too. Buy Now on Amazon $15.46

Tech Armor HD
