Spigen lists screen protectors for "Nexus 5″ on Amazon; could it be launching October 30th?
Sep 24th 2013, 18:04, by Quentyn Kennemer

The Nexus 5 hasn’t been officially unveiled yet, but we have tons of reasons to believe it’ll be on its way shortly. From FCC leaks to Googlers accidentally using the device in the public eye, we have no doubt Google is looking to bring us another Nexus handset within the next month (likely manufactured by LG). Now, another bit of confirmation has hit the web.

Spigen, the third-party accessories maker known for screen protectors and cases, has published a listing for Nexus 5 screen protectors on Amazon. It joins screen protectors from this year’s most popular devices, such as the iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Samsung Galaxy S4.

The image for the listing shows a rather blank, black slate, though you can tell where the screen separates from the bezel. It doesn’t look much different from the Nexus 4 at first, though the front-facing camera is pictured on the left (whereas the Nexus 4′s is on the right).

Another interesting thing to take away from this listing is the date that it’s expected to be available. That’ll happen October 30th, apparently — does this mean anything? It’s tough to say. The Nexus 4 was launched mid-November, so a late October release for the sequel isn’t out of the question. It could just be a placeholder date, but there’s nothing to give us any indication either way.

We’ll be patiently awaiting official details from Google  in the weeks to come, but in the meantime this is about as much as we have to go on in terms of a possible release date. What do you think?

FIFA 14 now available for Android (North American version)
Sep 24th 2013, 17:33, by Edgar Cervantes

fifa-14

FIFA 14 has arrived at the Google Play Store, making many soccer (known as football everywhere outside the US) fans happy. Today is your day if you have been waiting to play the new FIFA game!

Like many of you, I was bummed to see the Swiss version show up this morning. It was incompatible with all my devices! I just want to play soccer, and now that the North American version has hit the Play Store we can do just that.

The game features everything you can expect from a FIFA game. These are all real players, teams and leagues. There is nothing like seeing your team winning the world cup, right? You can accomplish that with this game (once you get good).

To make things better, the game is also tablet-optimized. You will be able to take advantage of that bigger screen to plan your games. The graphics are good (as we can expect from EA) and the controls are said to be intuitive. But of course, there is always a bit of a learning curve if you are used to console gaming.

Ready to play?! You can now download FIFA 14 straight from the Google Play Store. It is compatible with American devices and the only requirement is having Android 2.3.3 and up. Oh, and it takes a whopping 1.3 GB of storage! You better start clearing up some of that space.

The app is free. Well, “freemium”. This means you can download it and play it for free, but extra features will cost you some money. See you in the field!

Archos GamePad 2 leaks with quad-core CPU
Sep 24th 2013, 17:33, by Scott Webster

The Archos GamePad 2 has surfaced online ahead of its formal announcement, leading many to believe the debut is soon at hand.

The preliminary specs, which have since been pulled down, indicate a 1.6GHz quad-core processor and 2GB is in order for the device. Additionally, the GamePad 2 should offer 8GB or 16GB storage options, microSD expansion, and a 7-inch IPS display at 1280×800 resolution.

No indication, just yet, on what pricing and availability are but we suspect we’ll learn in short order.

Less than 24 hours after the president of HTC America promised that the Android 4.3 update would hit the Developer Edition of the HTC One this week, said update has begun hitting all devices in Taiwan.

According to the frequent HTC leaker LlabTooFeR, who shared a screenshot of the update changelog, the 4.3 update for the One doesn't bring a bump in the Sense version, but does come with a few tweaks and improvements.

The phone will now show a battery charging animation even when it's powered off, and users can now add sound to video highlights.

The update also improves the contrast of images taken in low-lighting conditions. It's not clear yet if this is the fix to the purple-tinting issue that some HTC One users experience when taking shots in very low light. The Taiwanese company acknowledged the problem back at the beginning of the month and said it's working on a fix via software update.

Android 4.3 mostly brings changes under the hood, such as increased security, support for OpenGL ES 3.0, and support for Bluetooth Smart. For now, we don't have official information on the release of the Android 4.3 update for HTC One in other regions, though its kickoff in Taiwan and its impending arrival on the Developer Edition make us hope for a speedy rollout.

iMessage Chat for Android brings functionality, security risk
Sep 24th 2013, 17:15, by Dima Aryeh

There are quite a few things keeping Apple users in the ecosystem, but a huge feature is iMessage. It’s a cross platform messaging client that only supports Apple platforms, like iOS and OSX. It’s a basic chat client like every other, but the way it integrates into the iOS Messaging app is what draws a lot of people to it. Plus, with so many using it, some don’t want to leave it behind.

In really big news, someone has gotten iMessage to work on Android! There is a big catch though, and that’s a possible security issue. But the app is available for free on the Play Store, and after signing in with your Apple ID, it indeed works and sends iMessages to Apple users.

Someone getting this very closed service working on Android is in itself big news, and I think that’s an awesome achievement. But there is no describing the risk you’d be taking in downloading this app. According to Jay Freeman (better known as famous iOS hacker Saurik), each message is sent through a Chinese server before reaching Apple. All of your messages could be read, saved and even modified without your knowledge.

Also, you’re giving your password to an unofficial app. There isn’t an authentication system through a third party; you’re just giving your ID and password to the developer. I don’t think it needs explaining how potentially dangerous this could be to your security. This is the same ID you use to purchase things with your credit card from iTunes.

We have linked the app for those curious enough to try it, but we simply can’t recommend you download this for any reason. Though nothing has been proven, it might be very unsafe. Still, it’s pretty amazing that iMessage has been modified to work on our favorite mobile operating system. What are your thoughts on the situation? Leave a comment!

HTC faces short supply of One Mini, possibly due to casing shortage
Sep 24th 2013, 16:54, by Dima Aryeh

It looks like HTC is facing yet another hardship. The company is slowly going downhill despite its best efforts with the new One and One Mini smartphones. Alleged corruption among its workers and continually low profits don’t bode well. Things aren’t looking great for the once legendary company, and they don’t seem to be getting better. This time, the company is short on One Mini smartphones while consumer and carrier demand rises.

Analysts estimate that the company is shipping around 200,000 units per month, but this isn’t enough to meet demand. This may be due to a casing shortage, as some sources claim, due to design difficulties. The device is a solid piece of metal, so we can imagine this is a possibility. However, it’s always possible that HTC didn’t expect much demand for the smaller phone and is simply shipping low numbers.

Things don’t seem to be getting any better for HTC, but we hope things pick up. HTC is one of the companies that has some serious fans to back it up, so we’d hate to see it dwindle. But there is a significant possibility that the company will post a net loss this financial quarter. Is the One Mini in stock in your area?

AT&T LG G2 review
Sep 24th 2013, 16:57, by Jerry Hildenbrand

Lg G2.

The Optimus tag has been replaced with cutting-edge hardware and a bold button layout

LG has been on a tear as of late, releasing phones that tick all the marks for hardware aficionados, while paring back their user interface slowly but surely. The G2 is the culmination of these efforts. It's currently the hardware king with the Snapdragon S800 CPU (though that will be changing soon enough) combined with a big screen and everything else Internet phone fans have a hankering for. But we've seen enough to know that it takes more than hardware to make a great phone.

The software is equally important. This is an area where LG has historically struggled, often adding too much of the wrong stuff to Android and delivering a product that nobody ever asked for. While we admire any company who thinks outside the box, everyone here has been waiting for LG to get it just right. A perfect phone is surely something that can never be, but the G2 comes close. Read on and see where the G2 excels, where it fails, and why the former outweighs the latter.
