Last week AT&T made a rather surprising announcement and revealed they’d be offering the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini for just a dollar with a new 2-year contract. Yes, the Galaxy S III Mini, not the S4 Mini. It was a shock to many, but now that the device is up for pre-order (and ships tomorrow) we’ve learned some important details about the specs under the hood.
The Galaxy S III Mini that was originally released long ago had a NovaThor dual-core processor, a tiny 1,500 mAh battery, and overall was a budget-friendly cheap device in every sense of the word. However, AT&T’s model received a few important upgrades to make it worthy of their network, and your dollar.
The AT&T Galaxy S III Mini is only $0.99 with a new 2-year contract, which makes it pretty decent given the price and new hardware details. The 4-inch screen isn’t the best, but the rest of it lines up with the HTC One mini. That being a 1.2 GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 processor (not bad, right?) with 1GB of RAM, and an upgraded battery to 2,000 mAh. Both which were probably done in order to achieve 4G LTE, then have enough juice to stay charged with the faster speeds.
So in case you thought this phone was just a terrible budget device, it appears Samsung and AT&T improved it quite a bit, but didn’t bother mentioning that during the announcement. The S III Mini runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and now that we have a bigger battery and a Snapdragon 400 under the hood, that 99 cents price point doesn’t look too bad. Again, the Galaxy S III Mini on AT&T starts shipping tomorrow, and hits stores the 27th.
