Qualcomm back pedals, says 64-bit computing in Apple's A7 processor is no longer a gimmick
Oct 9th 2013, 01:13, by Chris Chavez

Apple A7 slide

Back when the iPhone 5s was announced, Apple made a big deal about Apple’s all new A7 processor and the 64-bit capabilities therein. While only offering limited benefit at this point and time (no software to utilize it, not enough RAM in mobile devices to matter), it was a bigger number. One that the competition simply couldn’t offer, and one that essentially future proofed the 5s.

Last week, Qualcomm’s CMO Anand Chandrasekher shared his thoughts on Apple’s new A7 SoC, calling the 64-bit capabilities as nothing more than a “gimmick”. Ouch. In an interview, Chandrasekher explained:

“I know there’s a lot of noise because Apple did [64-bit] on their A7. I think they are doing a marketing gimmick. There’s zero benefit a consumer gets from that.”

Of course, the quote made headlines around tech circles and it didn’t take long for Qualcomm PR team to start doing a little damage control. In a statement issued today, Qualcomm specifically addressed Chandrasekher’s comments on the A7′s 64-bit processor, calling them “inaccurate”.

According to Qualcomm, mobile software is already moving towards the 64-bit. It’s a move Qualcomm is already eying in the near future (gimmick or not) with their upcoming Cortex A53 and A57 chips. As our smartphones are just now hitting 3GB of RAM, 4GB is likely right around the corner. Just wait until we see next year’s Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

Chrome gets Android screencast support, debugging features
Oct 8th 2013, 23:23, by Nate Swanner

In what looks to be an attempt to get developers thinking more mobile centric about their design, Google has introduced into Chrome a utility to allow for real-time alterations. As more and more users turn to their phones and tablets ahead of desktop or even laptop computers, the mobile website has increasing value for developers. From monetization to simple navigation, making it look right on mobile is crucial.

Android Chrome debugging

Google's obsession with all things web-based is going even further with this new development for Chrome. In the latest beta build for the world leading browser, brave souls can test a utility which allows them to test their creations in real-time, via USB connection to a tablet or phone. The utility is available on all platforms Chrome supports: Mac, Windows, Linux, and Chrome OS.

This was originally outed by Francois Beaufort, who is known for digging up interesting tidbits in the Chromium code. Via his Google+ post, Beaufort details exactly how to get it up and running. By activating a few flags in Chrome, anyone can begin casting and testing. The screencasting will allow users to view and alter, via Chrome, what's going on with their mobile device creations, as illustrated in the video below.

A simple utility, this has far reaching implications. As Chrome Beta for Android recently gained the ability to save web pages to the home screen, this seems to be a continuation in Google's attempt to make the mobile web a more viable option for everyone, and it starts with developers.

Android 4.4 KitKat Downloads UI leaks, reveals Holo Light theme
Oct 9th 2013, 01:00, by Derek Ross

Android Downloads UI
Normally, when new Android versions are released to the world, Android fans such as ourselves don’t head to the Downloads app to look for any new goodies. However, when the Downloads app is about to undergo a complete graphical redesign, we pay attention. As we continue towards the next batch of Nexus devices and the inevitable Android 4.4. KitKat release, the pace for leaks has quickened. Let’s take a look at what we have this time around.

  • New Holo Light theme instead of Holo Dark. A white, light theme matches other core Google apps and seems to fit quite nicely with other leaks depicting a whiter Android UI.
  • The Downloads icon is now much cleaner and flatter.
  • The action bar also includes two new icons. The icon with the three lines most likely contains sorting options for sorting by file size or by date.  The four square dots icon is most likely for changing the view from displaying files line by line, to a cards view, similar to how Google Drive currently looks and functions as shown below.

Do you like the new Holo Light theme with flatter icons that seem to be the theme with Android 4.4? Let us know in the comments.

Skype updated with a brand new tablet layout
Oct 9th 2013, 00:56, by Andrew Martonik

Skype

Fresh interface, improved video quality and several under-the-hood improvements

Skype is rolling out an update today that is drastically improving the interface on larger tablet screens. Back in February Skype gave a tablet-optimized layout a try and quickly reversed its actions, and we're happy to say that this time around it seems to have done it the right way. Building on the completely remade Skype 4.0 update that was released for phones in June, the new interface focuses on conversations and people in a much-improved layout that is clearly designed for larger screens.

Version 4.4 brings all of the upgrades in terms of performance that came to phones in version 4.0, and all devices that move to 4.4 will see improved video quality. Skype says that the maximum resolution in the latest version can be up to four times as high as before. A whole grouping of bugfixes are also included in the latest update, including big issues with incoming calls and reboots.

Yahoo Mail receives unified redesign, now offers 1TB of storage
Oct 8th 2013, 23:56, by Andrew Martonik

Yahoo Mail

New themes, easier navigation and unified controls across platforms

Yahoo Mail is 16 years old today, and to celebrate the service is receiving a large redesign to unify its look across the platform. You'll now notice a cleaner look in the Android app along with changes in the iOS and Windows Phone apps as well as on the web. Functionally, the app now shows email threads in a "conversation" view if you prefer and several basic functions like starring, deleting and searching are easier to perform with one tap.

Several features that were reserved for premium "Mail Plus" subscribers before are now free, including disposable email addresses, enhanced filters and automatic message forwarding. The amount of storage you receive as a free user has dramatically increased as well — everyone gets 1TB (yes, one terabyte) of storage for their email.
