TalkAndroid_Weekly_Recap

We had another busy week at TalkAndroid so here’s a recap of all the top stories. By far the biggest news this week has to be the unveiling of the Moto X. It’s was one of the most hyped up phones, but did it deliver? We also saw Chromecast get root, but in a flash, it was taken away. The new Kindle Fire specs leaked, but seriously folks, why would you consider a Kindle Fire when you can grab the new Nexus 7? Google announced the much needed Android Device Manager for tracking and wiping/locking lost devices.

It was definitely a busy week, but things aren’t slowing down anytime soon with the big LG G2 announcement next week. It’s time to get caught up and get ready for another exciting week.

Images of the HTC One Max (T6) leak, looks like an HTC One on steroids
Aug 4th 2013, 17:23, by Robert Nazarian

HTC-One-Max-T6_Leak_01HTC is supposed to released the HTC Max (codenamed T6) during the 3rd quarter, and we finally have some pictures of it. Unsurprisingly, it looks a lot like an HTC One, only bigger. The HTC Max is a phablet if you will, with a 5.9-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) display. It will also have the latest and greatest form Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 800, along with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, microSD slot, 2MP front camera, and 3,300mAh battery. It is also supposed to be 9.4mm thick.

Three variants are being created for China: TD-SCDMA for China Mobile, CDMA for China Telecom, and WCDMA for China Unicom. I would expect to see this one in the states as well, but don’t expect it on all four carriers at the start. With Verizon not even launching the HTC One yet, this could end up being their 4th quarter HTC device.

One more pic after the break.

Samsung trademarks Galaxy Gear, could possibly be upcoming smartwatch
Aug 4th 2013, 17:27, by Jared Peters

galaxy gear trademark

We’ve been hearing rumors and details about Samsung’s own smartwatch since before the Galaxy S 4 was even released, but nothing concrete ever popped up. However, Samsung appears to have trademarked “Galaxy Gear,” which is for a “wearable digital electronic device in the form of a wristwatch.” Galaxy smartwatch, anyone?

Most manufacturers are at least toying with the idea of a smartwatch, so it shouldn’t surprise any of us to see Samsung moving forward with those plans. And personally, I think Galaxy Gear is a really cool name. Hopefully we’ll some solid details of this in the next few weeks whenever we hear about the Note III.

Android phones account for record 80% of device shipments in Q2 2013
Aug 4th 2013, 17:36, by Jared Peters

android phones q2 2013

If you thought Android’s strong performance in the tablet market was impressive, check out these quarterly results for smartphone shipments. According to Strategy Analytics, Android devices account for an incredible 79.50% of devices shipped in Q2 of 2013. Four out of every 5 devices shipped ran some version of Android. That’s beyond impressive. It’s a growth of exactly 10% from 69.50% last year in Q2, and most of the growth came at the expense of 3% of Apple’s marketshare and 7% of the remaining “Other” category.

However, Apple still managed to ship about 5 million more devices than last Q2; Android OEMs just happened to ship almost 80 million more devices, which made for a significantly stronger marketshare grab. Other smartphone types dropped by about 10 million units year over year, so if you were holding out hope that BlackBerry might gain some traction and give you an alternative OS to jump to, these figures are all but a nail in the coffin.

Over, smartphones experienced a 46.70% growth year-over-year, which is 5% more than last year. Eventually, it seems like this market has to peak, but there’s really no telling when that will be.

Samsung just can't catch a break: Obama administration vetoes U.S. sales ban of older Apple devices
Aug 4th 2013, 17:45, by Robert Nazarian

Obama_Signing

It wasn’t a huge win for Samsung, but at least it was something. Back in June, the U.S. International Trade Commission awarded Samsung a sales ban on AT&T models of the iPhone, iPhone 3GS, iPad 3G, and iPad 2 3G. Yes, I know these are older devices, but it was one of the very few wins for Samsung.

Apparently the Obama Administration seems to be fans of the Romper Room style iOS because they just vetoed the ban. Hit the break for the full text.

In addition, on January 8, 2013, the Department of Justice and United States Patent and Trademark Office issued an important Policy Statement entitled "Policy Statement on Remedies for Standard-Essential Patents Subject to Voluntary FRAND Commitments" ("Policy Statement").2 The Policy Statement makes clear that standards, and particularly voluntary consensus standards set by standards developing organizations ("SDO"), have incorporated important technical advances that are fundamental to the interoperability of many of the products on which consumers have come to rely, including the types of devices that are the subject of the Commission's determination. The Policy Statement expresses substantial concerns, which I strongly share, about the potential harms that can result from owners of standardsessential patents ("SEPs") who have made a voluntary commitment to offer to license SEPs on terms that are fair, reasonable, and nondiscriminatory ("FRAND"), gaining undue leverage and engaging in "patent holdup", i.e., asserting the patent to exclude an implementer of the standard from a market to obtain a higher price for use of the patent than would have been possible before the standard was set, when alternative technologies could have been chosen. At the same time, technology implementers also can cause potential harm by, for example, engaging in "reverse holdup" ("holdout"), e. g., by constructive refusal to negotiate a FRAND license with the SEP owner or refusal to pay what has been determined to be a FRAND royalty.

Chinese HTC One Max

A Chinese variant of the HTC One Max has been spotted by the folks at ePrice. Looking very much like the HTC One the world already knows, the Max (also known as the T6) does have some key differences. Besides the removable back cover, dual-SIM variation, and SD card support we would expect in an Asian version, the processor and screen have both received a major bump compared to the current model. The HTC One Max is said to have a Snapdragon 800 running at 2.3GHz, and carry a 5.9-inch screen.

We're not sure how closely this will resemble any models that may be released in the west, but we know a lot of folks are interested in what HTC is doing with the bigger One. There's another picture after the break, and some pricing and availability speculation (spoiler: Asia) at the source link.

Getting the most out of Google Now voice actions
Aug 4th 2013, 15:15, by Andrew Martonik

Google Now

'Remind me to use Google Now more often'

Google Now gets more and more powerful every day, which is aided by the fact that much of the processing it does is handed off to a Google data center over the Internet. Aside from the inherent issues when you don't have connectivity, this gives Google Now a ton of capability in terms of voice recognition, and lets Google add new capabilities without pushing app updates.

We've all played around with the standard voice actions in Google Now — making calls, sending text messages and performing searches — back when it was just "Google Search", but there are so many more things that it can do for you. While there are dozens of different voice actions available, we've compiled a list of several that can truly be incorporated into your daily life.

AA Weekly: top Android news of the week, August 4, 2013
Aug 4th 2013, 13:21, by Bogdan Petrovan

thumb and featured

This week, we had some good news for owners of bogged down Nexus 7s (2012), Samsung got caught red-handed, MS Office hit Android, the Moto X has landed (finally), and Google has your back if you lose your phone. Let's kick it!

The 2012 Nexus 7 gets another chance at life with Android 4.3

Many users reported that the Nexus 7 2012 was snappy when it was new, but once they used it for a while performance began to drop. In extreme cases, the 7-inch device made by Asus became all but unusable. This week brought us two great news on this front – first, the new Nexus 7 will not suffer from this problem, and second, the Android 4.3 update will make the first generation Nexus 7 usable again.

nexus 7 2013 aa 16

All thanks to a little software command called TRIM, that is now implemented in Android 4.3. Huzzah! So, how does TRIM work? Simply put, the command wipes clean all unused data blocks from the storage space, throwing out all the "garbage" that amassed in a few months of usage.

Red-handed Samsung

If you follow tech sites, you probably know that benchmarks, those apps that gauge how fast a device is, are pretty important for us hardware geeks. That's because benchmarks let us compare two devices in an objective way. Or do they?

Massive improvement in AnTuTu benchmark scores

Samsung found itself in an embarrassing situation this week, when a close look at the Galaxy S4 revealed that some benchmarks are given access to higher GPU speeds than regular apps. And it was no accident – AnandTech found references to code named BenchmarkBooster in the Galaxy S4 firmware, along with a list of hardcoded benchmark apps that get preferential speeds.

Sammy offered a feeble explanation for the situation, but failed to address all the issues raised by AnandTech. The moral of the story: don't trust benchmarks.

Better late than never: MS launches Office for Android (sort of)

Ask a few people what apps they would need in order to give up their laptops for a tablet, and there’s a good chance one common answer will be Microsoft Word and the other apps in the Office suite.

After hitting iOS a while ago, Office is now finally available to Android users.

Office Mobile for Android

That's the good news. The bad news is the limitations that Microsoft imposed on the app. You will require a license to Office 365, your device must run Android 4.0 or higher, and tablets are not supported. The app is only available in some countries, but the biggest restriction is probably the limited functionality of the app.

Microsoft is obviously trying to protect its cash cow, without missing out on the mobile boom. Luckily for users, there are already several better productivity suites available for Android.

The hype train derails: Moto X

For the last month or so, we had a section dedicated to leaks and rumors about the Moto X in every AA Weekly edition. So it feels very good for us to finally report on the real deal.

The Moto X was announced on August 1, with a few interesting specs and features and rather disappointing price and availability. To summarize, all the leaks were spot on, except for the low price, which turned out to be just wishful thinking.

moto x motorola broll (7)

As you'd expect after an intense rumor buildup campaign, there was a bit of a backlash against the Moto X, from fans that were hoping for… well, more. Check out our full coverage for all the details, but our Derek Ross made some good points on why the Moto X disappointed people.

Android Device Manager: dude, where's my phone?

It may not be as flashy as the Moto X, but the final topic in our roundup is probably more important to many users. Remember how we asked ourselves why Android doesn't a have built-in "lost phone" tool, like some other platforms have? Such a tool used to be available for business Google Apps users only, but not anymore.

Android Device Manager

On Friday, Google announced Android Device Manager, a tool that will let users locate, ring, and wipe a lost Android device. The app will be part of Google Play Services, so it will be automatically deployed to most devices running Android 2.2 and higher. In order to use it you’ll just need to be signed in your Google account. Finally, a universal, easy to use app for locating and managing lost devices – we think that’s great news!

In your opinion, what were the most important news this week, and why?

Moto X

The Moto X flagship handset was finally unveiled a few days ago, during a special media event hosted by Motorola in New York which Android Authority attended.

In addition to covering the handset thoroughly for you: specs and features, image galleryrelease date and pricing, customization options, software features, and everything else that was revealed about the phone, we have also managed to spend actual hands-on time with the device.

In the following videos you can see our first look at the device, but also our first impressions after a few days of using the Moto X.

Our Kristofer Wouk shows you everything you should know about this new Motorola creation – the first Moto phone that has been influenced by Google – and we'll be back with a thorough review of the Moto X in the near future.

Nexus 7 (2013) drop test video: the new Nexus doesn't make it
Aug 4th 2013, 12:20, by Chris Smith

Nexus 7 (2013) drop test

After having dropped a variety of gadgets to see how they fare against all sorts of hard surfaces – including last year's Nexus 7 – we did the same thing with the new Nexus 7 (2013 model).

We would have expected the device to survive the test better than its predecessor, and to some extent it did so. But (spoiler alert!) while the device survived the first drop – falling on its back – receiving only some minor scratches, something unexpected happened: the device would not turn on after. Despite receiving more damage in its respective drop test, the Nexus 7 (2012) was still turning on, and its touchscreen became unresponsive only after successive drops, once damage to display was significant.

We then continued our drop test with a few other drops. We let the new Nexus 7 fall on its sides but also on its display.

Naturally, more damage was done to the gadget, with cracks on the display appearing right after the first drop on the side. While the device didn't split open, after the third drop the back cover snapped out – with some effort we could have pried it open.

After the fourth and final drop, the display was further damaged, with a hole in it showing internal components. Hopefully, in real life you won't drop the device successively, which could bring on the kind of gadget carnage we've managed to achieve.

While no two drops are similar, and while there aren’t completely objective ways to drop test devices, we’ll advise you to make sure you don't drop this particular tablet in any fashion, as it may not turn on after the first drop, which is far worst than having to live with the scratches or cracked display, or replace the screen and/or the case.

If you want to see how the Nexus 7 (2012) and iPad mini (2012) did in a similar drop test, you can also check our earlier video (above).
