Dropbox Pro plans go big with 500GB option

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 10:50 AM PDT

Lately the competition in online cloud storage has really started to heat up. With multiple options coming in with all sorts of pricing someone needs to make their mark. Today it appears that Dropbox wants to be first. They’ve just revealed their new Pro plans that are doubling users storage limits for nearly the same price.

From architects to photographers, or families with way too many pictures and videos of their kids Dropbox now fully has you covered. Dropbox isn’t just improving their services, their offering is getting a huge upgrade. Users can now get Dropbox Pro in 100GB or 200GB versions, but at the price of the original 50 and 100GB plans — tell me that isn’t a great deal?

That isn’t all either. If you currently have a 50 or 100GB plan, you’ll automatically get upgraded to the 100 or 200GB limit. Then for all you heavy hitters or users that just have way too much stuff they need in the cloud, Dropbox now offers a 500GB flavor of their services. Full details and pricing will be available later tonight on dropbox.com/pricing. With Google Drive, Box.net any many others around Dropbox is looking better and better.

Motorola RAZR V on the way to Canada

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 10:26 AM PDT

Good news for all of you Canadian smartphone users, as Motorola announced today that the RAZR V will be heading to Canadian markets later this year. It looks to be arriving relatively soon too, as Motorola says that it should be available in Q3 of 2012. Hit the jump to see what you can expect when the RAZR V makes the trip to Canada.

For the most part, the RAZR V will be the same as the original Droid RAZR. Our buddies over at SlashGear confirm that the RAZR V comes in at 8.4mm thick with the same Kevlar back original RAZR users are familiar with, and that the RAZR V will be shipping with Ice Cream Sandwich ready to go.

Also included is a 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera capable of recording video in 1080p, and the same 4.3-inch qHD AMOLED display that graces the US model. HSDPA, WiFi b/g/n, and Bluetooth radios are all included in this package, as is a microSD slot that can handle cards up to 32GB.

Despite the fact that the RAZR V will be launching soon in Canada, Motorola isn’t ready to talk about pricing just yet, and outside of that Q3 release window, we’ve been left waiting for a solid launch date. When it does finally arrive in Canada, Motorola says you’ll be able to find it at Best Buy, Bell Mobility, The Source, Videotron, Tbooth Wireless, WIRELESSWAVE, Future Shop, Virgin Mobile, and WIND Mobile.

US Cellular Galaxy S III shipping today – in stores Friday

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 09:54 AM PDT

For those who ordered a shiny new flagship Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone from regional carrier US Cellular we have some excellent news this morning. US Cellular has just confirmed their 4G LTE equipped version of the phone is shipping starting today for folks who pre-ordered, and it will arrive in stores at the end of the week.

US Cellular opened up pre-orders back on June 12th and have been having pretty good sales considering it’s their best smartphone to date, and in their lineup. Although the same could be said for every carrier at the moment. It looks like those who ordered early will be getting their phones delivered starting tomorrow as USCC just tweeted all pre-orders have started shipping this morning.

The Galaxy S III from US Cellular is $199 for the 16GB model, and $249 for the 32GB flavor just like most carriers, although those prices are after $100 mail-in-rebates sadly. You’ll be able to order the phone online starting tomorrow, and head to your nearest local store on Friday the 13th to pick one up in-store. Check out all of our coverage and reviews of the other identical models below, then get ready to enjoy the best smartphone around.

Google releases Android 4.1 Jelly Bean source code

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 09:41 AM PDT

Great news hit the Android airwaves last night when Google’s own Jean-Baptiste Queru announced that they were adding Android 4.1 Jelly Bean source to AOSP. Google’s finally released the source code, which means they are feeling good about its current state, are ready to let the world enjoy it, and we can expect those Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 tablets to start shipping soon.

For those who don’t quite know, this is the main step in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean being released. Until today it was just announced, but now it’s officially available for developers, ROM makers, manufacturers and more. This doesn’t mean you’ll be getting Jelly Bean right away, but now all the manufacturers can officially get cracking on their updates.

Announced in Google Groups, just as expected the proprietary binaries and code for the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 have been posted, with the Nexus S and Motorola XOOM coming shortly. This is only for developers but the best part of the news is now all of our loyal ROM developers can get cracking on official Jelly Bean ROM’s for a magnitude of Android smartphones and tablets. While we won’t be seeing official updates for a little while, you can expect to see custom ROM’s appearing basically within the next few hours. Get excited guys and go buy some Jelly Belly’s. I can’t wait for CyanogenMod 10!

Motorola officially outs the Atrix HD for AT&T – Just $99

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 06:33 AM PDT

We already saw plenty about this phone last week when Motorola accidentally posted it to their website, but this morning Motorola has officially announced their all new Atrix HD smartphone for AT&T. The new Motorola Atrix HD will be a 4G LTE device, run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and will be their first phone now that Google owns the company.

The new Atrix HD takes everything you loved about the past versions and beautifully blends them into a design similar to the DROID RAZR. It also has one of the best displays of any smartphone on the market. Many larger screens like the 4.8-inch Galaxy S III has a 1280 x 720p display but the Atrix HD is only 4.5 inches with the same resolution — giving it a 329 PPI that will be extremely crisp. Motorola is touting it with their new Colorboost display technology.

The screen beats the iPhone’s so called “retina” display, and the specs are quite nice to given the price. Motorola and AT&T have wrapped up this phone with the 4.5-inch screen, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the same Qualcomm 1.5 GHz dual-core processor as the Galaxy S III, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and a zero shutter lag 8 megapixel rear camera. The phone also rocks a 720p capable 1.3 front camera, a 1780 mAh battery, and Motorola’s brand new widget. It’s called the "Motorola Circle Widget" with "at-a-glance" access to your notifications, time, weather, battery, data usage, and settings.

atrixHD1 Motorola-Atrix-HD-1 displaymedia.ashx displaymedia.ashx

Like most Motorola devices as of late, and the RAZR, it features DuPont Kevlar coating on the rear so it’s extremely durable, as well as splash guard for the occasion water spill. As usual we have micro-USB for charging and micro-HDMI for easy mirroring content to your HDTV. The Motorola Atrix HD will be just $99 with a new 2-year contract and be speeding along with AT&T’s 4G LTE, and you can expect more details for Bell Canada in the coming weeks.

AT&T Galaxy S II Skyrocket finally gets official Ice Cream Sandwich update

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 04:05 PM PDT

It’s been a long time coming, but today AT&T’s Galaxy S II Skyrocket finally got the official Ice Cream Sandwich update users have been waiting for. This official update comes quite some time after a leaked build of Ice Cream Sandwich started making the rounds in March, so we’re sure many will be happy to get their hands on the finished build at last.

The official update is being rolled out over Kies, so all you need to do (provided you’re a non-rooted user) is look for build i727UCLF6 and download the update. Rooted users, naturally, should wait for the pre-rooted release of Ice Cream Sandwich to arrive before updating.

The main difference between this official build and the one we saw back in March is that it will update the Galaxy S II Skyrocket to Android 4.0.4 instead of Android 4.0.3. Otherwise, the updates should be mostly the same, so if you were using March’s leaked build, the transition to this new update should be quite painless.

Huawei Ascend D1 hits China today, heads to Russia in August

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 03:45 PM PDT

Huawei has been making some great leaps and bounds lately in the world of Android and smartphones. While this phone isn’t quite as powerful as its bigger brother the Ascend D Quad, the Ascend D1 is available now and still has some pretty impressive specs. Available today in China head down past the break for additional details.

The Ascend D1 might not rock 4 cores like its bigger brother but Huawei describes it as a “speedy all-rounder.” Although I’d have to disagree with its aging 1.5 GHz dual-core Texas Instruments processor. However the D1 does come with stock Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a 4.5-inch 720p HD IPS display, and 1GB of RAM to keep things plenty quick. If you think the rear looks like a Galaxy S II — it’s because it does.

Other specs include an 8 megapixel rear camera, 1.3 front for video chat, 1080p video capabilities and Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound. The Ascend D1 comes with 8GB of internal storage and the folks from Huawei have stated the device is available and on shelves in China starting today. Then buyers can expect it to arrive in Russia and other parts of the world in August.

Verizon 4G LTE arrives in tons of Midwest and East Coast locations

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 02:02 PM PDT

For many people living on America’s east coast and in its heartland, today is an exciting day. That’s because Verizon has announced that it is expanding its 4G LTE operations in many locations in both areas. The roll out is hitting the vast majority of these locations today, with Verizon holding off on just a few for a couple more weeks, so some of you will be getting 4G LTE coverage before others do.

As far as today’s expansion is concerned, Verizon has brought 4G LTE coverage to additional locations in Kansas, New York, Missouri, and Ohio. New York and Missouri are getting the lion’s share of Verizon’s attention, with 4G LTE going live in only a few places in Kansas and Ohio.

On top of all of this, Verizon also announced plans to expand 4G LTE to Columbus and Rome, Georgia in the coming weeks. Sorry to say, but if you live in or around those areas, it looks like you’ll have to wait a while longer as those in New York and and Missouri get to enjoy all of the benefits of 4G LTE from here on out.

As 4G LTE grows in popularity (and availability) across the country, so too does the number of 4G LTE devices. Just last week, the HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE was released unto the masses, and you can catch Android Community’s review of it by following the link in the story timeline below.

Tweet Lanes App brings pure Android 4.0 ICS to Twitter client

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 12:54 PM PDT

Have you been dying to find an awesome new Twitter client for your Android smartphone? Ever since Twitter bought TweetDeck they’ve left it for dead, and the stock Twitter app isn’t that great. What we have for you all today is a brand new app called Tweet Lanes — and it’s awesome. They call it “Pure Twitter, Pure Android” and we’d have to agree.

The Developers Digital Ashes have brought what we love about Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to a stock, yet powerful Twitter app. All the design elements we expect and more have been integrated. Along with unique feature like scrolling through your feed with volume up/down, reporting spam, and more. Check out this Twitter fuelled, Ice Cream Sandwich inspired goodness! Here’s some of the features worth mentioning:

– The native Android ICS styling has been shamelessly applied to Tweet Lanes, which makes for the most beautiful Twitter client available on Android.
- Designed and engineered to adhere strictly to the Android Design guidelines.
- Fully embraces the Android swipe controls (and headers).
- VolScroll™ – Use the hardware volume buttons to quickly navigate your feed. Very handy on larger phones such as the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S3!
- Interact with multiple tweets at the same time using multiple selection. Very handy for replying to multiple people in a single tweet or blocking spammers.
- Multiple account support.
- Automatically preview images and videos in your feed.
- Get ready for a new means of tweeting. There’s no ‘New Tweet’ button here. Instead, the ever present Context Tweet Box will serve all your tweet-creation needs.

Being able to interact or reply to two tweets at the same time is a breeze. Just tap on both tweets and they’ll be highlighted and from their you just type in the “always there” context tweet box to quickly reply. It’s extremely easy, intuitive, and quick. The context tweet box looks just like any compose box in ICS, and is always available. You’ll never have to tap on a “compose” icon at the top. Then VolScroll is amazing. I didn’t realize I’d like scrolling with volume keys so much, but each tap goes one message at a time so you’ll never miss a tweet — ahh I love it!

The app is still in its early stages and they don’t offer any settings yet, so you’ll get an error if you head to that aspect of the app. The developers also plan tons of impressive new features in a paid version, but you can get it free for life by trying their early version today and tweeting about it. My hands-on screenshots below should give you a better idea of what to expect from this awesome app, or just head to the link below and download it today. This is Twitter for Android done right!

Verizon Galaxy S III online orders now shipping July 19th

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 12:16 PM PDT

This entire Verizon Galaxy S III launch is continuing to get worse and worse. It’s almost reminding me of the Galaxy Nexus launch all over again. After countless delays, date changes, and more it looks like those who’ve ordered online are now getting ship dates showing July 19th. Whatever happened to the 10th, or the 12th?

Today Verizon has officially confirmed the July 10th “official release date” has been pushed back 2 days and is now set for July 12th. The Galaxy S III should be available in stores nationwide on the 12th. For those who’ve opted to order online, Verizon is now telling users their phones will ship by July 19th. Another week of waiting it seems.

At this point we’re not really sure if we should be blaming Verizon or Samsung for the delays. We know the demand has been huge for this flagship smartphone, and that both T-Mobile and AT&T had to add slight delays — but nothing like Verizon has done. For whatever reason they seem to be struggling with demand. Most likely it’s due to massively high sales, but we can’t be certain. You might want to head to a retail store on the 12th or 13th instead of ordering online. Who’s getting the 19th for their ship date?

Nexus 7 tablet official cases coming soon

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 11:23 AM PDT

ASUS and Google’s new Nexus 7 tablet is pretty stealthy dressed in all black, but it looks like that will be changing soon because ASUS just outed a colorful set of official cases for the new Nexus tablet. The tablet maker posted a picture on Twitter showing off 6 colorful options for those looking to protect their new tablet.

We’ve seen this same case in the grey version on the Google Play Store along with the Nexus 7 on announcement day, but it still isn’t available. ASUS will be offering multiple color options for those interested. I think I’d go with blue or black myself, although I do love my Google IO limited edition white Nexus 7.

Hopefully ASUS and Google will announce something soon over on Twitter on when these will be available for purchase. Most likely once the Nexus 7 starts shipping from the Play Store (should be within the next week or so) they’ll release the cases too. There’s no pricing or availability information at this time, but I’m sure you’d all like to protect that investment — even if it’s only $199. Check out our review and plenty of Nexus 7 coverage below.
