Chrome desktop apps could come to Android devices in the near future
Sep 6th 2013, 12:17, by Robert Nazarian

Pixlr_Touch_Up_Chrome_Desktop_App

Yesterday was not only Chrome’s 5th birthday, but more importantly, it was the launch of the first native Chrome apps. It is these apps that could drive the Chrome OS into being a true daily driver for many rather than something to dabble with. We have also heard that Chrome and Android will remain separate, but there will probably be more of an overlap in the future.

It is possible that Google could bring these Chrome desktop apps to Android soon. They didn’t say it specifically, but Rahul Roy-Chowdhury, a project manager overseeing the Chrome Apps project said this…

“We’re targeting the desktop as our first order of business because that’s where the majority of our users are. We want to nail that first. But our goal, eventually, is to get this to run everywhere that Chrome runs.”

Of course it remains to be seen if there would be any benefit to these apps on an Android phone, but what about tablets or even the rumored Androidbook?

LG Nexus 5 technical details surface at the FCC
Sep 6th 2013, 11:00, by Kris Carlon

Pictures from the official Android 4.4 KitKat video have just been seen of what looks to be a LG-built Nexus 5 and despite Google's instant removal of the ad it remains in circulation. If that corporate recall wasn't in response to the Nexus 5's ''accidental'' appearance I don't know what it was (maybe just a clever ploy to make us think it's the N5 in the video and steal the limelight from all the IFA releases?). Nevertheless, there are now some very interesting technical specs appearing at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) which point to what many are calling the LG Nexus 5.

When is big, too big? – Acer drops a 24-inch all-in-one tablet
Sep 6th 2013, 09:30, by Kris Carlon

Another surprise pop-up at IFA, one so large it seems hard to miss, is Acer's ridiculously massive new all-in-one tablet, the DA241HL. This is a 24-inch, yes, 24-inch touchscreen Android tablet intended as a desktop replacement with touchscreen functionality. The thing is seriously huge, and although I can say I've been pretty happy with my Acer Iconia tablet over the last couple of years, I don't know what I think about super-sizing it to a desktop replacement.

Nexus 5 FCC

The inside rear plate of the LG-D820 is shown here, a device believed to be the Nexus 5

First a sighting in the wild, now a run through the FCC? A device, which could very well be the new Nexus phone, has passed through the FCC system. In examining the documents, the folks at Engadget have come up with a few interesting details, some of which cannot be currently verified. Here's the quick rundown of what's been spotted so far:

  • 4.96-inch screen
  • Dimensions are 131.9mm x 68.2mm, no depth noted
  • Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974)
  • LTE (bands 2, 4, 5, 17, 25, 26, 41; compatible with Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile)
  • Qi charging coil
  • NFC
  • CDMA/EV-DO
  • HSPA+ (pentaband)
  • GSM/EDGE (quadband)
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • WiFi 802.11 b/g/n/ac
  • 2300 mAh battery
  • Android 4.4 KitKat (the tricky part…)

The pics of the Qi charging/NFC antennae also show the alignment of the camera cutout on the back panel, which is "an identical prototype" according to filings. Engadget is confident this is an LG device, and the LG-D820 model number the device had in FCC filings would lend itself to that. LG officials also filed the confidentiality request and agent authorization, pretty much sealing the deal.

Unfortunately, the FCC filings give a whole lot of detail about testing, but the filing we saw didn't have Android 4.4 (called 'KyeLimePie') noted. A few pics have surfaced of that info (below), also reflecting "aosp_hammerhead", which keeps pace with the Nexus fish software build history. The FCC filing we saw had been updated today, probably to specifically remove the Android 4.4 info.

Let's take a step back and examine what we've got: a very robust set of specs, a back panel that looks a lot like the one on the phone a Googler was snapping pics with at the KitKat Android statue unveiling, and the first Android 4.4 device that's been approved by the FCC. That device held by the Googler in the now infamous video also had Nexus across the back in landscape, just like the Nexus 7.

In so many ways, this looks to be the Nexus 5. World class specs, a match to a device in a video Google quickly pulled from the internet, and Android KitKat. We'll be sure to keep an eye on this as it develops.

Sony Xperia Z1 vs HTC One_ Quick Look - YouTube 28 000844

Sept. 4 was a really big day for the Android world — Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 3 and a smartwatch, the Galaxy Gear. There was a lot of hype surrounding that event, but something more impressive happened that day — Sony announced the Xperia Z1, their second flagship device for this year.

Put frankly, it’s an insane device, but just how well does it perform against some of the other flagships we’ve seen earlier in the year? The HTC One is a powerful handset that everyone was really excited over. So, how does the Z1 stack up against it?

Let’s find out, shall we? In a rush? Jump straight to the video, or otherwise stick with us as we take a closer look at the Sony Xperia Z1 and HTC One in this comparison.

Design and build quality

sony xperia z1 aa 2

The Xperia Z1 is made out of aluminum, giving the device that well built and durable feel we all long for. However, Sony took it a step further by covering the device in glass. So, not only is it a sturdy device, but it’s also stylish. Of course, you have to  keep in mind that glass breaks much easier than other materials, so dropping the smartphone may not be ideal.

Nonetheless, the glass gives the Xperia Z1 a slick and comfortable feel in the hand, and though it is a bit slippery, you can get a nice, tight grip on the Z1.

The HTC One’s body is made out of aluminum, making the device feel well built and durable. One of the reasons many people like the HTC One is because of the metal chassis, as the glossy plastic on most devices feels cheap and, well, not as durable as we’d like it to be. That said, the HTC One, as demonstrated in our drop test, can take quite a beating before becoming unusable.

Not only is the metal chassis stylish on the HTC One, but it also makes for an easier grip, reducing your chances of actually dropping the device. It also feels comfortable in the hand.

Verdict: HTC and Sony did an excellent job in build quality for the One and Xperia Z1. Both are very durable and stylish devices. It’s a tie.

Display

sony-xperia-z1-honami-aa-9

Sony’s Xperia Z1 features a 5-inch Full HD Truliminous display with the X-Reality engine, capable of 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, rated at an impressive 440ppi. Colors are vibrant, and viewing angles are much better than they were earlier this year with the Sony Xperia Z.

In the other corner, we have the HTC One, sporting a 4.7-inch Full HD LCD display capable of 1,980 x 1,080 resolution, rated at a whopping 468ppi. Colors in the HTC One are vibrant, making Sense 5 look really slick on this device, and viewing angles are also really good.

Verdict: With the Truliminous display meshed with the X-Reality engine, the Xperia Z1 takes the win. It’s an absolutely stunning display.

Camera

sony xperia z1 aa 27

In one hand, we have the Sony Xperia Z1, sporting the 20.7-megapixel Exmor RS CMOS image sensor with G Lens (27mm wide angle and F2.0 aperture). When it comes to optics, this is certainly one of the best cameras you’ll see in a smartphone. While we weren’t able to do a whole lot of testing, picture quality is fantastic, color reproduction is very good, and the sensor is able to capture a lot of detail.

As for the HTC One, we have a rear camera with 4 Ultrapixels, intended to capture more quality photos by taking in more light. Picture quality is good, though it certainly isn’t as good as HTC made it out to be. Nonetheless, it’s a good camera with a wide range of modes and scenes available, such as HTC Zoe. Color reproduction is done very well, and it captures a nice amount of detail.

Verdict: It’s going to be hard to compete with Sony’s 20.7-megapixel camera optics, especially with the wide range of modes available to make your photo really pop. The Xperia Z1 wins, though the HTC One’s camera is no slouch.

Battery

sony xperia z1 aa 13

The Sony Xperia Z1 features a massive non-removable 3,000 mAh battery — that’s only 100 milliamp hours less than the Galaxy Note 2′s capacity. Of course, you’re going to need some serious power to support that Full HD Truliminous display and X-Reality engine working in tandem. When you look at the specs the Xperia Z1 is sporting, 3,000 mAh isn’t that much, but it’ll certainly get you through the work day, possibly even longer.

htc one google play edition aa back profile

As for the HTC One, it has a much less powerful non-removable 2,300 mAh unit, although, the device just isn’t as demanding as the Xperia Z1. It’ll get you through the work day and more easily, and if you don’t have enough power left, the battery saving features will help you eek out that last bit of needed juice.

Verdict: Both the Xperia Z1 and HTC One have impressive batteries. However, they don’t perform on the same level. The Sony Xperia Z1 needs a larger capacity because of all of the latest and demanding hardware it’s sporting. The HTC One has some high end specs, but they aren’t nearly as demanding as the Z1, thus it doesn’t need nearly as much power. It’s a tie.

Specs

sony xperia z1 aa 33

Inside the Sony Xperia Z1 we have a Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz, backed by a Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of RAM. It comes in 16GB of onboard storage with support for a microSD card, should you need to expand that storage. Finally, it has its IP55 and IP58 certifications for water and dust resistance.

htc one vs nokia lumia 928 aa one performance

On the other hand, we have the HTC One with its Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor clocked at 1.7GHz, backed by an Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM. The downside here is the lack of a microSD card slot, but it does come in 32GB and 64GB models, though the 64GB version is exclusive through AT&T.

Verdict: The Sony Xperia Z1 and HTC One are both on the same level in the sense that they’ll get even some of the most demanding tasks accomplished, though the Z1 wins with its added water and dust protection.

Software

sony xperia z1 aa 26

Sony’s known for being pretty simplistic when it comes to software. The Xperia Z1′s interface is similar to stock Android, echoing some of the design elements of Ice Cream Sandwich, while having all of the great enhancements of Jelly Bean. However, you still get a bevy of Small Apps and Sony’s preloaded apps on the device.

There really hasn’t been a whole lot of changes to the software since the Xperia Z’s release, which might be a good or bad thing. We’ll leave that up to you. The big part is that Sony’s UI isn’t lacking any responsiveness like TouchWiz and Sense 5.

HTC One

Speaking of Sense 5, that’s just what’s loaded on the HTC One. While it doesn’t have nearly as many features and enhancements as TouchWiz, there’s still a certain amount of unresponsiveness, though if you can get past that, it’s a pretty slick UI.

Verdict: Sony’s Xperia Z1 is the champion here, offering a stock Android-like experience with a few minor additions, but still keeping things responsive and slick.

Hands-on Video

Wrap Up

sony xperia z1 htc one aa 2

Sony’s Xperia Z1 is one wicked device, surpassing the quality of most flagships that launched this year. It’s packing some insane hardware, such as the Snapdragon 800 and its monstrous 20.7-megapixel camera, and, of course, the Exmor RS Sensor.

If there’s one device that’s ready to shake up the Android world, it’s the Xperia Z1, though that’s not to say devices like the HTC One aren’t good anymore. On the contrary, they’re great handsets!

What’s happened here is that Sony has set a new bar of expectations. Going forward, I’d expect to see companies echo the sheer amount of quality that went into the Z1 with their own future handsets.

Verizon Galaxy Note III and Galaxy Gear pricing seen in leaked document
Sep 6th 2013, 08:50, by Juan Carlos Torres

Samsung‘s new Galaxy Note III and Galaxy Gear are the hottest topics this week, so it’s not surprising that carriers have been quick to reveal their offerings. But while Verizon has been so far silent, a leaked photo shows us just how much the carrier is planning to charge for the devices.

verizon-note-3-gear-pricing

T-Mobile announced that the Samsung Galaxy Note III will be priced at $199 a month on its Simple Choice Plan, down with 24 equal monthly payments of $21.00. The Galaxy Gear, on the other hand, will cost $299, plus taxes and fees. The carrier hasn’t opened up pre-orders yet but is conducting a raffle for a chance to win the devices for free. AT&T said that it will be taking pre-orders starting today and has the Galaxy Note III up on its AT&T Next program for $35 per month, or $299 with a two-year contract. It hasn’t given out details about the Galaxy Gear except that it will be coming soon.

Based on the leaked information, Big Red will be offering the smartphone for comparably competitive prices. The Galaxy Note III will also be available for $299 on contract, with a full price of $699. The smartwatch, however, is indicated to come in a bundle with a phone for $599.98. Simply based on the document, it doesn’t seem like the Galaxy Gear will be sold separately by Verizon.

We may get to see Verizon’s real plans soon, as it will be opening pre-orders today as well. No launch date has been given yet, but it probably would be around the first week of October similar to AT&T and T-Mobile.

HTC One Mini David Koma special edition revealed
Sep 6th 2013, 07:59, by Juan Carlos Torres

Manufacturers have sometimes put out specially designed versions of their devices and HTC is not making an exception with its limited edition HTC One Mini, sporting designs from renowned designer David Koma. The “HTC One Mini x David Koma” feature’s the British fashion designer’s artistic sensibilities and inspiration for his upcoming collection to be shown during Fashion Week.

htc-one-mini-david-koma

To those of us unfamiliar with the fashion world, David Koma’s designs have been worn by stars such Beyonce, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga and has continually held one of most anticipated shows at the bi-annual London Fashion Week. Touted as one of Britain’s “ChangeMakers”, HTC thought it fitting to collaborate with Koma on a daring design, in line with the company’s “Here’s To Change” marketing campaign.

The result is two unique designs for the HTC One Mini, reflecting Koma’s interpretation of the theme “Change”. The first design incorporates curves and organic patterns, taking inspiration from vinyl records and music. The second features a theme taken from Japanese archery, representing Koma’s own change from his old season’s design to his current work.

The HTC One Mini x David Koma is, however, not for sale. A limited number of units are available and will be given away to 10 lucky winners of a design contest being held by HTC UK. Better join quickly if you’re interested, as the competition closes on September 22.

Samsung Galaxy Note III and Galaxy Gear landing on T-Mobile, AT&T next month
Sep 6th 2013, 06:28, by Juan Carlos Torres

Samsung has just announced its Galaxy Note III smartphone as well as the much-talked about smartwatch device, the Galaxy Gear. Carriers are now rushing to get it to the hands of their customers as soon as possible, and it seems that T-Mobile and AT&T have planned to do so next month.

samsung_galaxy_note_3_ac_18-540x357

T-Mobile isn’t accepting pre-orders yet, but it has set up a registration page so that they can inform you when they do. Those who sign up before September 15 will automatically be entered into a raffle for a chance to win a Galaxy Note III and a Galaxy Gear. The Galaxy Note III will be carrying a price tag of $199.99 a month on T-Mobile’s Simple Choice Plan, down with 24 equal monthly payments of $21.00, while the Galaxy Gear will be sold for $299, plus fees and taxes.

AT&T, on the other hand, announced that it will start accepting pre-orders for the Galaxy Note III on September 6. Customers will be able to get the phablet for $35 per month via AT&T’s Next program. Otherwise, it will cost $299 with a two-year agreement. Unfortunately, the carrier has not made known any pricing or availability details about the Galaxy Gear except that it is coming soon.

T-Mobile has set a launch date for the new Samsung devices on October 2, while AT&T plans to start shipping orders by October 1. In the meantime, if you’re still undecided, you can read up on our hands-on of the Samsung Galaxy Note III and the Galaxy Gear to help you make a decision.

Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear availability confirmed on AT&T, T-Mobile
Sep 6th 2013, 06:07, by Andrew Martonik

Galaxy Note 3

Carriers announce availability dates of Oct. 1 and Oct. 2, AT&T now offering pre-orders

Although all four major carriers here in the US have announced that they will eventually carry the Galaxy Note 3 and its companion device the Galaxy Gear, AT&T and T-Mobile have just rolled out their pricing and launch dates. AT&T has announced that it will open up pre-orders for the Note 3 at $299 with a two-year contract — or $35 per month on AT&T Next — in either black or white starting today. The phone will finally ship starting October 1st.

T-Mobile has yet to open up pre-orders — just a pre-registration page — but is offering the Note 3 for $199 down and $21 per month (for 24 months) on a Simple Choice plan. Oddly, the phone goes on sale one day later than AT&T on October 2nd. If you do the math, that pegs the Note 3 at about $705 off-contract with T-Mobile, and AT&T has its off-contract price set at $725.

Also off-contract regardless of your carrier choice is the Galaxy Gear, which T-Mobile has pegged at $299 and we're going to assume the same goes for AT&T. Neither carrier has specified the color options on the Gears they will offer.
