Google Nexus 5 Scores 8/10 on iFixit Teardown
Nov 5th 2013, 17:05, by Christian de Looper

Nexus_5_Teardown

It seems that the heavily talked about Google Nexus 5 is not only an incredibly nice phone for its price, but it is extremely repairable as well, as shown in iFixit’s latest teardown of the device. The Nexus 5 received a repairability score of 8/10 from iFixit, mostly because of the fact that it uses minimal adhesive and uses a lot of modular components that are easily replaceable.

In fact, it seems that almost everything about the Nexus 5 is easy to replace except for the screen assembly, which is all glued together in a rather secure yet hard to replace manner. In other words, don’t drop your phone, or if you think you might, then get a screen protector.

Cloud.tv's Dayframe goes open beta ahead of formal release
Nov 5th 2013, 15:55, by Scott Webster

The Cloud.tv team has announced that the official release of Dayframe is but one week away. The app, which provides a screensaver experience for your Android device, arrives in the Google Play Store on Tuesday, November 12.

The Dayframe experience is somewhat like that of Facebook Home but with Jelly Bean’s Daydream capabilities. Beyond a simple stream of Facebook updates, you’ll also have photos from Instagram, Tumblr, Google+, Dropbox, Flickr, Twitter, 500px, and others. And, unlike Jelly Bean’s Daydream feature, however, Dayframe lets users set a timer so that the app is not running around the clock.

A placeholder version of Dayframe is currently available on Google Play as a courtesy for those who wish to be first in line for the roll out. The app will automatically update to the full version when released.

Google details Smart Caller ID feature in Android 4.4 KitKat
Nov 5th 2013, 16:10, by Jason Cipriani

The Smart Caller ID feature that was added in Android 4.4 KitKat may be smarter than we previously thought.

Yesterday Google laid out more details for the new feature via a Google+ post.

As we mentioned last week, Smart Caller ID will help you identify businesses you don’t have in your address book when receiving a call. Instead of a seemingly random number appearing on your screen, Google will use its database to display the business name automatically.

Going even further than that, the dialer in KitKat will allow you to look up business phone numbers directly from within the app. You no longer need to use Google Maps to find a business, then place the call. Just start typing the name of the business and Android will do the rest. It worked really well in my brief testing this morning.

Continuing on down the path of impressing users, in 2014 Google will start using verified phone numbers to display caller information for the everyday common person. This means when you receive a call from someone who has allowed his or her phone number to be used (yes, it’s a feature you can opt-in or out of) their name and photo will automatically display on your caller ID. Magical, if you ask me.

Amazon gives Android developers Analytics and A/B Testing services
Nov 5th 2013, 16:23, by Scott Webster

Amazon today announced another pair of tools aimed at helping developers create the best mobile app/game experience. Available immediately, both Analytics and A/B Testing services are offered as a free, single SDK. One helps keep an eye on how one experience works against others while the other lets developers assess how and which features are being used.

  • Analytics – the Analytics service provides usage metrics on daily and monthly active devices, sessions, retention, and in-app purchase revenue. These metrics are updated continually and are available within 60 minutes of the data being received. When using this service, developers can quickly assess how, for example, launch day is going or how a new feature might be affecting retention.
  • A/B Testing – the A/B Testing service allows mobile developers to simultaneously test up to five different in-app experiences to understand which experience is most successful based on conversion, clicks, or other criteria they define. A developer simply needs to integrate the SDK and the service handles all of the complex statistical calculations on behalf of the developer. The service then presents the results in a simple web dashboard that shows which experience is most effective and statistically significant.

Google Helpouts arrives for those needing 1-on-1 expert help
Nov 5th 2013, 16:07, by Quentyn Kennemer

We’d already been let in on Google’s next big endeavor with Hangouts before. Dubbed Helpouts, it’s a service that will allow folks to get 1-on-1 expert help from other people for a nominal fee. Whether you need help with your new phone or PC, or want to be shown a recipe to get ready for Thanksgiving, you’d be able to pay someone (either per minute or per session) to show you how to do nearly anything you need.

Google has finally made the formal announcement via their blog. “With Helpouts, you can choose who you get help from based on their qualifications, their availability, their price, their ratings and reviews,” the post reads. Whether it’s an individual offering up their own free time or a corporation looking to add another dimension of customer support, you’ll be able to connect with people in a secure, convenient way, and you’ll be able to do it from either PC or mobile.

google helpouts

You’ll be able to share screens with each other, collaborate on documents and more — Google provides all the tools needed to make for a successful sessions. More than that, if the person needing help feels their needs weren’t met, Google will honor a money-back guarantee. They will take a look at each request on a case-by-case basis and determine what to do based on the archive of the session.

Of course, a service like this could be abused by the unpleasant souls of the world, but Google thankfully isn’t overlooking the importance of abuse and harassment. The company makes it easy to report any wrongdoing, and promises to review take action on every single complaint they receive:

We will enforce Helpouts policies to ensure a safe environment where people can learn from each other and share information.  When we disapprove a Helpouts listing, receive reports of abuse, or take action based on violations of Helpouts policies, accounts will be flagged.  Some violations will result in immediate account suspension or termination

The service will only launch with a few categories to start, but Google is looking to add a lot more over time. Anyone can sign up to be a helper, and anyone can find help as long as they can pay for it with funds from a Google Wallet account. If you’re on either side of that fence and want to see what the fuss is about, be sure to head to Google Helpouts and sign up for yourself.

thumbnail Nexus 5 given the teardown treatment, scores 8 out of 10 in repairability
Nov 5th 2013, 15:39, by Bogdan Petrovan

A rite of passage for any hot new device, iFixit's teardowns give us insight into the hardware that makes the mobile magic happen: all the nitty-gritty components that we often talk about, but we rarely get to see.

The newest device to visit iFixit's teardown bench is the Nexus 5, the already popular pure Android smartphone that Google launched last week. So, when it comes to repairability, how good is the new LG-made Nexus?

The device scored a very respectable 8 out of 10; the Nexus 5 is outranked only by two older devices from Motorola, the Droid Bionic and the Atrix 4G.

iFixit found that the Nexus 5 is highly repairable thanks to its modular design, which makes it easy to replace just the faulty components, and repair-friendly assembly methods, including plastic clips, standard Phillips screws, and just a smidge of adhesive. Unfortunately, one of the most sensitive components of the phone is hard and expensive to replace: the display is glued to the cover glass, meaning that you will have to replace the entire assembly in case of accident. We don't know yet how solid the Nexus 5 is (drop test in the making), but a case is highly advised.

The teardown also gives us a peek at the various components inside the Nexus 5, including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, the 8MP OIS camera module, the DRAM modules, and the non-removable 2,300 mAh battery.

HTC to get back to profitability by cutting costs, selling more affordable phones
Nov 5th 2013, 14:49, by Alex Wagner

HTC confirmed today that it took a net loss of NT$3 billion ($102.1 million) during the third quarter of 2013, with revenue for the quarter finished at NT$47 billion ($1.6 billion USD). Company executives say that they’ve got a plan to turn things around, though, including a focus on moving more low-cost devices.

During a briefing for HTC’s Q3 2013 results, CFO Chialin Chang said that his firm is examining a broader spectrum of products in this quarter. “We aim for higher volume into 2014 that will give better profitability,” Chang said, teasing that HTC will attempt to sell a higher number of affordable devices in an effort to return to profitability. HTC execs also said that they plan to cut costs and keep operating expenses low in Q4 2013.

HTC has been having a bit of a bumpy ride as of late due to the aforementioned net loss as well as other factors like supply issues with its One hardware and multiple employees exiting the company. The Taiwanese device maker’s got no shortage of strategies to turn things around, though, including the aforementioned focus on low-cost devices, the recent sale of its stake in Beats and HTC CEO Peter Chou’s recent promise to focus more on innovation and his firm’s product portfolio. Now we just have to wait and see if these efforts actually work.

The Nexus 5′s guts are spilled all over the place in this teardown
Nov 5th 2013, 15:31, by Quentyn Kennemer

nexus 5 teardown

To say our fascination with what sits on the inside of devices is a bit weird wouldn’t be unfair, but we’re no less ashamed. While we’re obviously not interested in taking part any of our own Nexus 5 devices here at Phandroid, we aren’t going to look away if someone else decides to do it. iFixIt took yet another hit for the teardown team, giving folks a look at the inside of the device down to its barest components.

Found inside the soft-touch chassis of the Nexus 5 is a very clean set of internals, all held together by a process that doesn’t use much glue at all. The modularity of the components and the solid engineering by LG helped iFixIt determine a repairability score of 8 out of 10, where 10 is a device that is the easiest to repair. That should bode well for DIYers who aren’t interested in shelling out tons of dough for most official repairs.

Unfortunately, I say “most” because the display was the one sore spot that kept this device from getting a perfect 10/10. According to iFixIt, the display and glass are hard-welded to the display frame, which will make for expensive repairs in the event of broken glass or a broken panel. That’s all the more reason to keep a case on this bad boy and protect it from the harsh elements of life. Head to the source link for the full tear down.

How to unlock the Nexus 5 bootloader
Nov 5th 2013, 15:00, by Jerry Hildenbrand

Unlock me baby

It's easier to unlock your Nexus 5 bootloader than it is to decide if you want to do it

If you're receiving your shiny new Nexus 5 in the near future, you'll want to think about unlocking the boot loader. It's a bigger undertaking than the folks on the Internet make it out to be, and doing it later is a huge pain in the kiester, so it's worth talking about.

First things first. Since it's a Nexus device, it was designed to be easily unlocked. There is no extra encryption layer, no signing your life and warranty away at the website of the people who made your phone, and no software hacks to try to bust your way around things. You only need the SDK and be able to use the command line — which are things you need to know about before you ever decide to unlock your phone anyway.
