Nexus 5 teardown reveals plastic clips, little glue and standard screws
Nov 5th 2013, 15:15, by Robert Nelson

The Nexus 5 has been the center of attention lately. Thankfully, we are on the side of official chatter as opposed to the rumors and as such, the folks at iFixit have recently shared their Nexus 5 teardown. This time around we are seeing a 15-step process that ultimately resulted in a repairability score of 8 out of 10. Perhaps more important, this teardown also confirmed some earlier rumors.

The confirmed rumor dealt with NFC. Prior to the release of the Nexus 5, chatter was suggesting the handset would have a Broadcom NFC controller, which would serve to (potentially) remove some of the carrier control in terms of using Google Wallet. Well, the iFixit crew found the Nexus 5 has a Broadcom BCM20793M NFC controller on the inside.

Shifting back to the repairability score and while this may not be something that everyone wants to do — this teardown was shown to use few tools and perhaps even nicer, not huge amounts of glue. The handset is held together with standard screws (#00 Philips) and the back cover is held together by plastic clips. Another point mentioned dealt with labeling.

It was mentioned the WiFi, MIMO and GPS were all clearly labeled on the back case. Bottom line here, we suspect most will leave their phone in one piece and enjoy the pics and descriptions from the iFixit teardown. But with that in mind, this score along with the details we are seeing, suggests that you should be able to get your phone fixed quickly and relatively easily — in case the unthinkable happens.

Pebble begins teasing new and updated software
Nov 5th 2013, 14:36, by Robert Nelson

While there are plenty of third-party apps to further customize your Pebble smartwatch, it does seem like it has been some time since an official software update has arrived. But with that in mind, it looks like we are going to get something software related from Pebble next week.

The company has announced an event that will take place on November 6, 2013. The event time is set for 10am PST (1pm EST) and as we often see, the invite comes more as a teaser than anything else. In this case, the folks at Pebble have said they have some “exciting developments and big news.” To that point, they also mention how this event will be one that developers will want to watch.

“If you’re currently developing for Pebble, or interested in creating apps for Pebble, then you should definitely tune in!”

The event will be streamed live and will also be followed up by a Reddit AMA. The ask me anything will be at 12 noon PST (3pm EST) on Wednesday and Eric Migicovsky as well as members of the Pebble developer support team will be around to answer questions.

While this appears to be developer focused, we do have to wonder whether this Pebble update will be focused toward Android users, iOS users or both. Naturally, we are rooting for Android, but in truth, there is plenty of room for improvement on both platforms.
