Sonic Jump brings Sonic the Hedgehog to Android

Posted: 22 Dec 2012 09:36 PM PST

Sonic Jump
Sonic the Hedgehog is among the more recognizable characters in all of video games. Ranking right up there with Mario and Pacman, With the death of Sega as a console, Sonic began to fade into legend. Remembered only by older gamers who remember what it was like playing on the Genesis. Sonic has made a comeback in a new game for Android called Sonic Jump.

Originally, the game was only released for iOS. Thankfully, Sega came to their senses and brought it to Android as well. It’s available in the Google Play Store for $1.99. As Eurodroid reports, the game is a little generic. Described as a, “non-stop-bouncy-bouncy genre of game”, it appears as Sonic Jump is taking Sonic back to his 2D scrolling roots.

Is Sonic Jump worth buying?

If you’re a fan of Sonic, then yes. In addition to Sonic, the game features two other favorites from the series. That would be Knuckles and Tales. Each character has their own skill set. It’s not a lot different from any other scrolling game. However, for Sonic fans, the nostalgia is well worth the $1.99

If this looks like something you want to check out, you can find it in the Google Play Store here. Has anyone given it a try, yet? Let us know what you think of it.

Does Acer have a $99 Android tablet in the works?

Posted: 22 Dec 2012 07:42 PM PST

acer-iconia-b1-tablet-1

Do you remember all those rumors about the $99 Nexus tablet? Well, they weren’t too far off. Reports out of Taiwan suggest Acer is ready to add another tablet to its Iconia lineup with the Acer Iconia B1. The newest addition to the lineup is rumored to be a $99 Android device, with some very interesting specs.

The 1.2GHz processor and 1o24 x 552 resolution screen are fairly benign, but the inclusion of a SIM card slot is an interesting move. According to FCC filings, there appears to be some cellular ability built in. The FCC filings also have a “label info” page which gives us an idea of what the tablet should look like.

Whatever the final cost of the tablet happens to be, it will definitely be competitively priced. Considering the specs and size, somewhere around $99 is realistic.  A low cost tablet running Jelly Bean could be a great addition to the Iconia family. If we’re lucky, CES 2013 could be the Iconia B1′s coming out party.

Today’s Google Play surprise: The Polar Express for $2.99

Posted: 22 Dec 2012 04:14 PM PST

google-play-surprise-polar-express

A lot of our readers haven’t exactly been thrilled with the surprises that Google Play is rolling out to celebrate the new year, and we can’t exactly blame them.

Yesterday, the surprise was the app version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas. At least developer Oceanhouse Media went the extra mile to put all of its other Dr. Seuss apps on sale as well. Still it’s not the $0.25 apps that a lot of folks wish it was.

Today’s deal is the Caldecott Award-winning picture book The Polar Express, discounted to $2.99 from its normally hefty price of $18.95. There’s no denying that this is a substantial discount, but given some of the other sales that big names like Square Enix are offering themselves, it seems like these may not be the deals that most users want.

If you do like today’s deal, and want to pick The Polar Express up while it’s still discounted, hit the Google Play link in the sources section below.

What do you think? Does it warm your heart to see the discount on The Polar Express? Or would you rather see deals like those we saw this time last year?

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is available in several colors, including Pebble Blue, Marble White, Amber Brown, Garnet Red, Sapphire Black, Titanium Grey, and La Fleur. Despite the wide range of colors the phone comes in, it looks like T-Mobile is only interested in selling two colors at one time. An internal memo has confirmed that the carrier is dropping the Pebble Blue color which is available on the carrier in favor of Titanium Gray.

T-Mobile is reported to launch the Titanium Gray model of Galaxy S3 on January 4 but won’t be selling it until the Pebble Blue model is sold out. The details that surfaced on a leaked memo reveal that the stores must sell their existing inventory of 16GB Pebble Blue model before they switch to the 16GB Titanium Gray model.

While the carrier is changing the inventory of 16GB model to gray and white colors it will still sell the blue and white models of Galaxy S3 for the 32GB model. While you may not be able to find the new color model of the device on January 4, which is the day it is going to launch, it is reported that the phone will be available in stores no later than January 9. The new Galaxy S3 model will also be available in Best Buy and Walmart stores on the same date the carrier will start its sale.

T-Mobile is also having a year-end sale which is dubbed as “Zero Down Sale” through which users will be able to buy 16GB Galaxy S3 with no money down after a mail-in rebate.

Google Shopping manager says search giant has no plans to enter the retail business

Posted: 22 Dec 2012 05:28 AM PST

android smartphone shopping

Google is a company known for jumping into completely new businesses, surprising the entire industry. The company is also known to discontinue those businesses when it doesn’t get the results it was hoping for, but that’s not what this post is about.

In an interview with AllThingsD, Google Shopping’s VP of product management Sameer Samat revealed that, despite some predictions, the company has no plans to enter the retail business.

Samat said in the interview "we aren't planning on being a retailer. We don't view being a retailer right now as the right decision." But this claim looks a bit off when we see Google’s recent acquisitions, which suggest that the company is working on building an infrastructure for selling physical items through online stores. The company recently bought Bufferbox, a locker service that provides consumers storage boxes where customers can have their stuff delivered.

On this particular acquisition, Samat said that BufferBox has nothing to do with Google becoming a retailer. According to him, Google purchased the company in order to help other retailers become more competitive. He explained, "we are trying to provide a level playing field for retailers". He added that there are some companies that have managed to do tech as well as retail well and said "How's the rest of the retail world going to hit that bar?"

Samat is obviously hinting at Amazon. Jeff Bezos’ company not only has a huge retail business, but also makes its own devices some of which are powered by Google’s own Android OS.

Samat notes that its not Google’s aim to become a retailer itself, but the tech giant wants to help smaller companies compete with big players who have set the bar high. He said "I think it's great that Amazon and others, like Rakuten, are upping the bar," and Google wants to "create a level playing field”.

According to AllThingsD, Google has made several changes to its site to improve the overall shopping experience. These include an imaging system that allows users to create 360-degree images of their products, such as this Lego kit.

This Christmas, Google gives employees a Nexus 7, Chromebook, or Razr M

android christmas

Well, Merry Christmas to you, Google employees! Google loves to take care of its employees by gifting them with the latest and greatest every year around this time, and this year is no different.

Last year, employees were given a Samsung Galaxy Nexus with a custom back cover to celebrate the close of 2011. This time around it’s a bit different, which may be better depending on what employees were expecting.

This year, Googlers are able to choose from three devices: the Samsung Chromebook, The Motorola Razr M, or a Nexus 7.  The Motorola makes sense, as they are now part of Google.  That, and LG can’t seem to keep a steady supply of the Nexus 4 around. I’m sure Google thought it would be in poor taste to gift every employee with the phone that most people can’t get their hands on. Then again, depending on which Chromebook or Nexus 7 you want… you may not be able to get your hands on them, either.

But you know what?  I’m not jealous mad at them. Those Googlers work hard and give us great products, so, Merry Christmas!

Android rules supreme in Europe, but Apple manages record performance in US

applevandroid

A recent report by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech reveals that Apple has been able to capture more than half of the total smartphone marketshare in the US in the 12 weeks ending on November 25. According to the study, Apple held 53.3% of the market in the US, which is the highest the company has ever achieved since it entered the phone business. The company had 37% of the US market share same time last year.

The recent gain is credited to the new iPhone 5, which has helped boost overall iPhone sales. iPhone’s rise in the US has come at the expense of Android. Last year, Android had a US smartphone market share of 53%, which has come down to 42% in one year.

While iPhone is getting stronger in the US, Android is increasingly dominant in Europe. According to Kantar’s sales data, Android has a share of 61% of the market in the top five European markets. Android’s share has risen from 51.8% of last year.

In Europe, Samsung is the number one smartphone manufacturer across the top five biggest countries of the continent. Samsung alone held 44.3% market share in the 12 weeks analyzed. Apple came in second, with 25.3%, share while HTC, Sony and Nokia fought for the third place.

Well, this is certainly interesting. Brian Wallace, vice president of strategic marketing for Samsung U.S., has been hired by Google/Motorola.  Wallace, who is credited for those Samsung ads taking dead aim at Apple users, will fill a “similar post” with Motorola.  As Google has declined to comment on the matter, we can only assume he will be charged with marketing Motorola devices and service.

Having only joined Samsung a year ago, Wallace was previously with Research In Motion as vice president of global digital marketing.  With this acquisition, and the news of a Motorola “X” device next year, we’re beginning to wonder just what the folks at Motorola have up their sleeve.  An impressive new line of devices and a guy who knows how to market them?  How exciting!

Hopefully we can look to see more ads like this next year

15 Minute Challenge: $20 Demon’s Score from Square Enix

Posted: 22 Dec 2012 03:15 PM PST

This image has no alt text

Yesterday we told you guys about 3 games new to Google Play from legendary game publisher Square Enix, one of which was a $20 game — yes, $20 — called Demon’s Score. The game’s pricing puts the title right up there with some of the most expensive the Play Store offers and many of you were wondering if the game was even any good (let alone worth twenty dollars). Well, I decided to give Demon’s Score a quick spin taking full advantage of the Play Store’s 15 minute return window. If you guys want to learn a little more about the game in addition to my initial thoughts, here is my 15 Minute Challenge for Demon’s Score by Square Enix.

Story

The game stars a young college student by the name of Serenity who’s looking for her dad in a haunted castle filled to the brim with musical themed monsters. Inside she runs into a teddy bear who helps her in her quest to find her father and unravel the secrets of the castle. In typical Japanese fashion, Serenity must utilize scantily clad outfits (obtained from conquered bosses) to give her new abilities and take on the worse creatures hell has to offer.

Gameplay

Each stage in Demon’s Score is broken up into two parts: Track 1 where players face off against smaller enemies, and Track 2 where players go toe-to-toe against the boss of that stage. Each boss has their own unique musical track — to the tune of a specific genre of music — and on the stage leading up to the boss (Track 1), the music also changes depending on the equipped demon/outfit. New music = new experience. The stages also have 3 difficulty settings — easy, normal, and hard — and if players beat a stage on all 3 settings, Square promises something special (less clothing perhaps?).

Gameplay in Demon’s Score is comprised of carefully timed to button presses and gestures, all to the tune of a various Japanese musical genres. Square describes the game as “off the hook, break beat action” which, in some weird way kinda helps, but you’d be better off picturing a mashup of Mega Man meets Devil May Cry, meets Elite Beat Agents. The flow of the game goes like this: beat a stage, face a boss, steal their powers, get a sexy new outfit, rinse and repeat.

Graphics

Visually, the game looks great. Console quality even. Powered by Epic’s Unreal Engine and optimized for the Nvidia Tegra 3, Square added a few nice special effects not present in other versions of the game, namely:

  • The Rim Lighting feature, which yields more dramatic actions and movements by bringing brilliant highlights to character outlines in backlit scenes.
  • Enhanced photorealism and three-dimensionality of characters with the Bloom feature, which produces a stunning diffusion of light in extremely bright conditions.
  • A depth of field created by focusing the camera on the character and blurring both background and foreground, lending even more realism to the game.
  • Twice the resolution of other versions of the game, resulting in higher-quality and sharper graphics across the board.

Serenity and her demonic outfits were the real star of the show, offering a wide variety of styles making sure that, no matter what your fetish, she’s got an outfit just for you. Enemies, bosses and the frequent times players are given a direct view of Serenity’s hindquarters (read: constantly) really showed off an amazing attention to detail and solid character design. There’s no question — Demon’s Score definitely has some high production value going for it. The problem with the graphics is that, while completely amazing looking, you don’t get enjoy them very much with huge onscreen beat cues and your hand constantly obstructing your view. First world problems, I guess.

Verdict

Okay, so I’ll admit it — the game is good. Real good. But is it $20 good? While it was nice of Square to include all the downloadable content from the iOS version for the Android release (a $32 value), typically, you’d still find a game similar to this on Xbox Live for between 800 – 1200 Microsoft points ($10 – $15). As much fun as I did have with Demon’s Score, I can’t say I was able to bring myself to plop down $20 for it. And I’m not usually too frugal when it comes to my gaming. Still, for those of you scoring Google Play giftcards this holiday (they’re sure to be a hit) and your Tegra 3 device is in need of some love, you may want to give Demon’s Score a shot. I’ll be waiting until my budding rap career finally takes off.

Weekend Poll: Major carriers vs MVNOs

Posted: 22 Dec 2012 01:31 PM PST

Major carriers have something to worry about – MVNOs. Mobile virtual network operators are those smaller carriers that don’t own networks, but are licensed to use other carriers’ networks to offer cellular services. Such service providers can offer much more affordable prices without contracts, but there are still incentives to sign your life away to a major carrier.

MVNOs have become very popular among smartphone users as devices start becoming more affordable. One can purchase a Nexus 4 for as low as $300, for example. This device is far superior to other equally-priced smartphones, and arguably better than even some that double its price. You can take this (or any other compatible device) to a GSM MVNO and just use the big carrier networks with small carrier prices. Or you can opt to buy their own devices, if you would rather make the process easier or the carrier uses a CDMA network.

These small carriers tend to offer great deals. They do have to pay fees to network owners, but they also don’t have to invest in improving networks and keeping towers up-to-date. You can save up to thousands of dollars per year if you opt for one of these pre-paid options.

But with all these great and affordable options, why are we sticking with major manufacturers? Well, there are many benefits, the main one being convenience. Though we end up paying more in the long run, there are many benefits to being with one of the big 4.

For one, it is possible to sign a contract and get a phone at a much discounted price. Most users don’t have $600 to $700 to pull out and spend on a good, high-end device out-of-contract. And the good devices you can find at a lower price can be rare. The most expensive on-contract devices cost around $300, which is much easier to swallow.

Major carriers also tend to be more reliable in terms of customer service. Of course, they have the resources to help out more… even if you have to sign your wallet away for 2 years. Not to mention they usually carry the best devices, but that is starting to change.

Hey! There is also the option of going prepaid with one of the 4 major carriers. T-Mobile has some great deals for prepaid customers, an all other carriers have prepaid options. Or maybe you are no longer in contract, but want to keep your older plan (mostly unlimited data customers’ situation).

With all of this in mind, we are wondering at what point MVNOs are. More and more Android users are starting to opt for prepaid MVNO carriers like Straight Talk, Solavei, Virgin Mobile, Boost Mobile and many others. Our audience consists mostly of Android users (of course) so it would give us a great idea of how the market between MVNO and major carrier customers is.

Please participate in the poll and give us your two cents! Do you prefer staying with a traditional carrier or have you moved on to a more flexible mobile world? And why?

Google steals Samsung’s VP of Marketing to work for Motorola

Posted: 22 Dec 2012 08:52 AM PST

We just reported on Google’s and Motorola’s secretive and super forward-thinking X Phone, and part of that story was about the heavy emphasis that Google is willing to put into marketing the device. In the story, we heard that Larry Page told Motorola that he is willing to allocate a significant amount of funds into marketing the X Phone. Well, now we know where a portion of those funds are going: to Brian Wallace’s salary. Google just nabbed Samsung’s Vice President of Marketing, Brian Wallace, who helped push Samsung into the Android success story that it is today. Wallace spent the last year working at Samsung and is responsible for the passive-aggressive (and highly successful) “The Next Big Thing Is Already Here” campaign that took swings at Apple’s most devoted fans. Before that, Wallace worked for over ten years at RIM, where he tried to help the struggling Blackberry maker make a turn around. Today, Brian Wallace will sit at the helm of Motorola’s marketing strategies, and hopefully will push the fledgling company back into the powerhouse territory where it used to reside. Let’s hope this all ties into the thickening plot of the Google/Motorola Super X Phone.

Final Fantasy Dimensions, Final Fantasy II, Demons’ Score released in Google Play Store by Square Enix

Posted: 21 Dec 2012 08:32 PM PST

Just in time for everyone starting a long holiday break looking for something to do on their tablet or smartphone, Square Enix released a trio of titles to the Google Play Store today. The first title is Final Fantasy II, a port of the original FF II from 1988. The game revolves around four war heroes caught between an empire and a rebel resistance. The game features a proficiency system for developing a character versus the more typical level up structure. Final Fantasy II is available for $7.00 and will run on Android 2.2 or higher.

A related title, Final Fantasy Dimensions, is a modern throwback version for the Final Fantasy line. Incorporating the traditional story of battles between light and darkness with some crystals thrown into the mix, the game uses 2-D pixel art to give the title a retro look. That look does not come cheap though as Final Fantasy Dimensions will set you back $20 if you have an Android 2.3.3 or higher device.

The final title released by Square Enix is Demons’ Score, a Tegra 3 only app. The story centers on a young college girl in search of her father who has gone missing in an asylum. Prior to disappearing, he provided his daughter with a smartphone app to help her control demons that may try to possess her. The gameplay is in the genre of rhythm games where players have to tap their device’s screen in certain rhythms. Demons’ Score also costs $20 to buy.

Several other Square Enix titles are on sale now, including Chaos Rings, Chaos Rings: Omega, Chrono Trigger, and the original Final Fantasy. If you are interested in any of the three new titles, use one of the download links below to get your copy.

Ever since Google acquired Motorola Mobile in early 2012, Android enthusiasts have been waiting anxiously to see what kind of amazing super-phone the combined companies would create. Well, according to a new report by the Wall Street Journal, we could be finding out as early as next year. According to some insider sources, Google is working very closely with Motorola to build the ultimate superphone, code named “X Phone”. Larry Page is said to have told the Motorola team to “think big” and has promised significant funds for the device. Dennis Woodside, Motorola’s chief executive has said that the company is currently “investing in a team and a technology that will do something quite different than the current approaches.” What is this “different” approach that the X Phone will be taking? It’s anyone’s guess really, but the fact that the phone is called the “X Phone” could be an homage to Google’s super secretive, super forward thinking “X Labs”, a branch of Google engineers that develop hardware and ideas that will change the future.

It is also quite possible that the “X Phone” name could be a hint that this phone will be the next Nexus device, since the Nexus logo is essentially an X. Other insiders are reporting that the phone will be followed by an X Tablet, also produced by Motorola. Unfortunately, the development of the hardware has supposedly hit some obstacles in the manufacturing and supply-chain process, which has caused Google and Motorola to have to rethink some of their original plans for the X Phone. As of now, we have no word on when the phone will be released, but the source says that it’ll be some time in 2013. That’s a big window, but hopefully they mean January 1st! Any of you have any theories about the “different approach” the X Phone will be taking when it comes to hardware?
