Sony SmartWatch2 review
Nov 3rd 2013, 18:00, by Jerry Hildenbrand

Sony SmartWatch2.

Sony’s third try at a smart watch hits almost all the bases

Sony is no stranger to the concept of smart wearables. We’ve seen the Sony Ericsson LiveView (which is best forgotten by everyone) and the original SmartWatch introduced at CES in early 2012, which was a little bit better but suffered from connectivity issues. Their latest version, aptly (yet unimaginatively) dubbed the SmartWatch 2 has a history to build on, and to try and not repeat.

Wearables are going to be a lucrative business for the right people. We all saw how the Pebble ripped through its Kickstarter goals, so the desire is out there. It will take a company that can get the form and the function just right to steal it all. Could Sony have done it with the SmartWatch 2? Sales say no, but we all know that best selling doesn’t mean best. Hit the break, have a read, and see what you decide.

It isn’t going to be just the Nexus 5 users who are going to benefit from Google’s emphasis on photography in their latest flagship device: as it turns out, the camera app, which is part of AOSP, comes with a photo editor which in my opinion is one of the most powerful ones ever.

While it offers a significant number of preset filters for the casual user, there are numerous options for those who want finer control, and also allows them to save their combination of effects as a preset that they can reuse on different images later on. The editor is also non-destructive (i.e., your originals are safe). Do check out the video below to get the complete picture.

KitKat Coming to HTC One Owners
Nov 3rd 2013, 16:36, by Anthony Muzonzini

Android 4.4 KitKat has arrived along with the Google Nexus 5 which was made available to order just the other day. That’s all good if you are planning on ordering a new phone, but there are those that recently just bought a high end phone but still want the latest OS. Well there is good news for HTC One owners though as the company has confirmed that an update will be available for the phone within the next 90 days, although the exact timing of the update will depend on where you bought your phone and which model it was.

Android 4.4 KitKat

After all the rumors and speculation, Android 4.4 KitKat finally was unveiled on Thursday with a promised update coming to most Nexus devices within weeks. For Galaxy Nexus owners, it was also revealed that the older Nexus handset wouldn’t be getting its hands on KitKat through an official release.

The good news is that the developer community is moving quickly to bring some form of Android 4.4 support the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, at least in an unofficial capacity. As we speak there are already quite a few different Galaxy Nexus ROMs starting to surface – for both the GSM version of the handset, and for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be any ROMs designed to work with the Sprint Galaxy Nexus at this time. On the bright side, Sprint has one advantage over Big Red: the Now Network officially supports the new Nexus 5.

While there are many ROMs out there, two of them stand out as being the most stable builds currently available, both of which are 'pure' KitKat with few modifications made, besides those needed to get the ROM working.

It's important to remember that while both builds are reasonably functional, these are still alpha projects. That means that bugs are bound to happen.

On the GSM side of the fence, we have SlimKat Maguro alpha build. Based on both user feedback on the XDA Developer's forum and from the developer's notes, this build appears to be very functional. There doesn’t appear to be any broken features or functions in the build, though there are some minor graphical glitches.

For Verizon, you'll want to turn your attention to the new "Shiny" Android 4.4 ROM, from well-known Android developer baldwinguy77. Like the SlimKat rom, this AOSP-based ROM has few to no modifications present. As for stability? Most of the user feedback has been quite positive, and it seems that all of the device’s core features appear to be working.

It's important to remember that while both builds are reasonably functional, these are still alpha projects. That means that bugs are bound to happen, and so you should proceed with caution of you are considering downloading KitKat for your Verizon or GSM Galaxy Nexus.

For more details on the GSM-compatible SlimKat ROM, head on over to the XDA Developer's Forum. For the Verizon Shiny ROM, you'll want to visit Rootz Wiki for more details.

For those that have already tried either build (or perhaps a different Galaxy Nexus KitKat ROM), what’s your experience been like so far? Smooth, or are you running into any trouble?

Nexus 4 and Google Glass

Well, that was one hell of a week.

We were in the middle of Friday's (rather epic) podcast on the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat when we reminded ourselves that just days earlier we'd been at the Samsung Developers Conference in San Francisco. So in the span of single work week we had an inaugural devcon from one of the biggest damn manufacturers of anything on the planet.

Then Halloween hit. It's kind of a thing when you have a couple young kids.

A day later, we had the announcement of a new (and pretty major, imho) version of Android. And we had the announcement and retail launch of the Nexus 5.

And the iPad Air went on sale last week, too. Not sure yet if I need to get one — I'll probably decide I do just as soon as it's not easily available. But the initial reviews have me wanting to see just how light and thin that thing is.

Oh, and I finally got Google Glass. So, yeah. Just a few things to wrap my mind around this week.

nexus 8You weren’t really naive enough to think that the leaks from Mountain View were going to end once the Nexus 5 went on sale, were you? No, sir, that’s not the way Google rolls these days. Having updated their Android.com domain with the release of Android 4.4, the above tablet, which we have so far not seen anywhere, was very visibly featured under the section A Library that goes with you.

Most of the web is considering the tablet to be an 8-inch one, particularly considering the slimmed down bezels from the top and bottom which I’m sure pretty much every one would welcome. While it’s difficult to estimate the size of the device from a single photo, if this is a real device that would be released significantly before summer 2014, it only makes sense that they build something in between their small and large tablet offering.

Is there a market for that size? I prefer 10″ tablets because I use them primarily for watching movies while travelling, and if the tablet is light enough, I don’t have fatigue issues holding it up for longer periods of time while reading. Having said that, the 7″ mark is where Android has excelled commercially. And if the tablet doesn’t take up any more space or weight than the current Nexus 7 and the cost is in the same vicinity, I’m quite confident that consumers would opt for the larger version.
