With the Android 4.4 push coming out shortly to Nexus  and Google Play devices and hints of rollouts plans being whispered about by some companies, a group of manufacturers have come out and confirmed their plans for the latest operating system rollout. LG, Motorola, Samsung, and Sony have revealed their plans, or intentions, for the rollout and which devices will be getting KitKat.

Nov 11th 2013, 18:19, by Android Developers

Posted by Ellie Powers, Google Play team

Today we are happy to announce that the App Translation Service, previewed in May at Google I/O, is now available to all developers. Every day, more than 1.5 million new Android phones and tablets around the world are turned on for the first time. Each newly activated Android device is an opportunity for you as a developer to gain a new user, but frequently, that user speaks a different language from you.

To help developers reach users in other languages, we launched the App Translation Service, which allows developers to purchase professional app translations through the Google Play Developer Console. This is part of a toolbox of localization features you can (and should!) take advantage of as you distribute your app around the world through Google Play.

We were happy to see that many developers expressed interest in the App Translation Service pilot program, and it has been well received by those who have participated so far, with many repeat customers.

Here are several examples from developers who participated in the App Translation Service pilot program: the developers of Zombie Ragdoll used this tool to launch their new game simultaneously in 20 languages in August 2013. When they combined app translation with local marketing campaigns, they found that 80% of their installs came from non-English-language users. Dating app SayHi Chat expanded into 13 additional languages using the App Translation Service. They saw 120% install growth in localized markets and improved user reviews of the professionally translated UI. The developer of card game G4A Indian Rummy found that the App Translation Service was easier to use than their previous translation methods, and saw a 300% increase with user engagement in localized apps. You can read more about these developers' experiences with the App Translation Service in Developer Stories: Localization in Google Play.

To use the App Translation Service, you'll want to first read the localization checklist. You'll need to get your APK ready for translation, and select the languages to target for translation. If you're unsure about which languages to select, Google Play can help you identify opportunities. First, review the Statistics section in the Developer Console to see where your app has users already. Does your app have a lot of installs in a certain country where you haven't localized to their language? Are apps like yours popular in a country where your app isn't available yet? Next, go to the Optimization Tips section in the Developer Console to make sure your APK, store listing, and graphics are consistently translated.

You'll find the App Translation Service in the Developer Console at the bottom of the APK section — you can start a new translation or manage an existing translation here. You'll be able to upload your app's file of string resources, select the languages you want to translate into, select a professional translation vendor, and place your order. Pro tip: you can put your store listing text into the file you upload to the App Translation Service. You'll be able to communicate with your translator to be sure you get a great result, and download your translated string files. After you do some localization testing, you'll be ready to publish your newly translated app update on Google Play — with localized store listing text and graphics. Be sure to check back to see the results on your user base, and track the results of marketing campaigns in your new languages using Google Analytics integration.

Good luck! Bonne chance ! ご幸運を祈ります! 행운을 빌어요 ¡Buena suerte! Удачи! Boa Sorte!

Xiaomi moves an incredible 220,000 phones in three minutes
Nov 11th 2013, 18:09, by Jared Peters

Xiaomi

Xiaomi is no stranger to selling massive numbers of phones in a short span of time, and during a sale for Single’s Day (the holiday opposite Valentine’s Day) they moved about 220,000 phones in three minutes. Ignoring the fact that the Chinese use Single’s Day as an opportunity to buy gadgets, Xiaomi had a total 380,000 devices in stock; 110,000 units of three smartphones, the flagship MI3, the MI-2S, and the Hongmi, and 50,000 set top Xiaomi boxes. Within three minutes, they had sold through their entire 110,000 phone stock in three minutes, and a good chunk of their other devices had been sold, too. All in all, Xiaomi says they moved right at 220,000 devices in those three minutes.

It’s hard not to be impressed by those types of numbers, but there’s still room for improvement for the Chinese smartphone maker. After all, if they could ramp up production to be able to consistently sell their stock instead of only selling a small stock every few months, they would easily be able to compete with some of the bigger smartphone manufacturers.

Major Google Hangouts bug lets emoji spammers lock up the app; Google already on the case
Nov 11th 2013, 18:00, by Quentyn Kennemer

Google Hangouts banner

An unfortunate bug seems to have surfaced in the latest Hangouts app for Android. Reddit user Recon0212 initially reported the bug, which could be experience-breaking for many people. So what’s going on? Well, if you are in a Hangout with many people — 12 for Recon — you could potentially lock up the participants’ app by spamming them with emojis. This means you’d be unable to enter the app and do anything. Pretty scary, right?

Thankfully, Google has been made aware of the bug. Googler Dan Morril chimed in on the Reddit thread and confirmed that he was able to reproduce the bug in the presence of a product manager. He notes “top men” are already notified and are looking into it.

What can you do in the meantime? The most convenient thing to do is to open Hangouts on a PC and remove yourself from the problematic group chat. It’s not ideal, but would you even still want to be in a group chat with people who spam emojis all day?

Oh, and since this means your SMS messages would be inaccessible, you’ll probably want to install a third-party SMS app to make sure you don’t miss anything important while you get yourself out of the sticky situation.

It might not be a bad idea to get a backup SMS app even if you haven’t been unfortunate enough to be affected by this bug — you never know when someone in your chat might be feeling a bit overzealous. We’ll be on the lookout for the update in the days or weeks to come.

Moto Maker expands to Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile
Nov 11th 2013, 17:55, by Scott Webster

The days of AT&T’s exclusive rights to the Moto Maker are up today as the service rolls out to the other big players. Effective immediately, you can custom design your own Moto X smartphone for Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile.

With pricing having recently dropped to $99 with a two-year service agreement, the Moto X ought to continue to snowball into the fourth quarter. We were really impressed with our review unit and think that average buyers will love the overall experience. If you’re not in it for the hardcore hardware then you’d be wise to consider this model.

Mysterious 'Xperia Z1s' shows up on Sony's website, disappears just as quickly
Nov 11th 2013, 17:35, by Alex Wagner

In the mood to start your week with a mystery? I hope you’ve got your deerstalker on and your Sherlock Holmes impression ready, because a mystery is precisely what I’ve got for you this morning. An unannounced device referred to as the “Xperia Z1s” recently popped up on Sony’s official website, complete with a render and tagline similar to the flagship Xperia Z1. XperiaBlog managed to snag a screengrab of the phone before it disappeared, but unfortunately for those of us interested in learning more about the Z1s, the link associated with the device led to a dead end.

The true identity of the Xperia Z1s remains shrouded in a fog for now, but it’s been suggested that the device could be a shrunken version of the aforementioned Xperia Z1. The two devices share the same image and tagline in the screenshot above, and it’s also worth noting that Sony and Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo introduced a miniaturized version of the Z1 known as the “Xperia Z1 f” earlier this year. This Xperia Z1s could end up being a variant of the Xperia Z1 f that’s headed for the shelves of some international markets. Of course, this is all speculation for now, but hopefully this brief appearance on Sony’s website means that the Xperia Z1s’s official debut is getting close. Stay tuned.

Moto X with Moto Maker now available to all major US carriers, starts at $99.99
Nov 11th 2013, 16:46, by Alex Wagner

I hope you spent this past weekend getting your creative side ready for a workout, because Motorola just announced that the Moto Maker customization tool is now available to all four major US carriers. After launching exclusively with the AT&T-flavored Moto X back at the end of August, Moto Maker is now opened up to customers on Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon as of today. Moto Maker gives consumers the ability to alter the Moto X’s back and front colors as well as the hue of its camera ring and volume buttons. Users can also include either 16GB or 32GB of built-in storage, select a default wallpaper and add a unique boot screen message.

In addition to the expanded availability of Moto Maker, Motorola has slashed the price of the Moto X to $99.99 with a two-year contract for the 16GB model or $149.99 for the more capacious 32GB variant. Consumers who prefer to avoid signing a commitment can expect to pony up $499.99 or $549.99, depending on how much built-in storage they’d like.

The Moto X news doesn’t stop there! Motorola says that it plans to update the Moto X to Android 4.4 KitKat “soon,” which is a piece of news that ought to please both current Moto X owners as well as those thinking about pulling the trigger now that Moto Maker includes all four major US carriers. Taking into consideration the impending update as well as the expanded availability of Moto Maker and the aforementioned price cut, it looks like now might be as good a time as any to snag Motorola’s flagship handset. Do any of you plan on reaching for your wallet as soon as you’re done reading this post?

The Oppo N1 is officially on sale in China
Nov 11th 2013, 17:52, by Jared Peters

Oppo_N1_Official_01

Oppo’s latest flagship device, the N1, has officially gone on sale in China for CNY3498, or roughly $574. There’s only 10,000 available units, so the stock is definitely going to be a bit limited.  The device features a 5.9 inch display, a unique 13 megapixel rotating camera, and Android 4.2 with Oppo’s Color OS overlay. Remember this isn’t the limited edition Cyanogenmod edition of the device, which ships later this year.

No word on if the device will ever make its way to markets outside of China, but with Oppo’s success lately, we may eventually see an unlocked model hit different countries.

Rochester Optical will be the first company to produce prescription model Google Glasses
Nov 11th 2013, 17:37, by Jared Peters

google glass

When Google Glass was first announced, many people wondered if there would be an option for prescription glasses, since regular glasses and Google Glasses are mutually exclusive at this point. Then, in July, Google was awarded a patent for what appeared to be Glass with prescription lenses… and then nothing else. It’s been several months and Google’s been pretty quiet about it.

However, today Rochester Optical has decided to step up and be the first to manufacture Google Glass on top of a prescription lens. Obviously that sounds like the 80-year old company has teamed up with Google to make this happen, but that’s actually not the case. Rochester Optical is doing this all on its own, and Google hasn’t entered any sort of agreement with them (yet). The company already has four Explorer Edition headsets and a large team of scientists that are fairly confident that they can make this work for average people.

Tim Moore, director of technology at Optical Technology, says they hope to have working models out by January, and they shouldn’t cost more than what a pair of Glasses already costs. At first they’ll be just for near-sighted people, but a far-sighted version shouldn’t be too far off. If they manage to hit their projected January date, we should be hearing more about this very soon.
