Qualcomm Samsung Galaxy S4 camera specs typo admitted, no 60fps after all

Posted: 28 Mar 2013 03:09 AM PDT

samsung galaxy s4 12 aa 600

Remember when Qualcomm said in a blog post that the Samsung Galaxy S4′s back camera was capable of capturing 1080p video at 60fps and we were seriously suspecting an error.

Well, it looked like an error because it was an error indeed. Phone Arena has asked Qualcomm about it and the company (that’s helping HTC promote the One these days) gave an answer.

The person writing the blog post made a typo, writing 60fps instead of 30fps, and getting the whole planet worked up about it in the process. It would have been something to see the first smartphone camera capable of recording 60fps video in 1080p (and it would have been even more interesting to find out why Samsung wasn’t promoting the feature,) but I guess we’ll just have to wait for it for a while longer.

When do you think we’ll have a smartphone capable of recording Full HD video at 60fps on the market?

Sprint Galaxy S4 apparently spotted at the FCC, global roaming support included

Posted: 28 Mar 2013 03:02 AM PDT

samsung galaxy s4 5 aa 600

The Galaxy S4 will be available in the U.S. from a variety of mobile operators, including the Big Four, but also regional carriers. The Sprint Galaxy S4 version has been already spotted with the FCC and it's apparently going to offer global roaming features.

The Galaxy S4 models spotted at the FCC are the SPH-L720 and the SCH-R970. The first one is awfully similar to Sprint's Galaxy S3 model number (SPH-L710,) while the latter could be the Galaxy S4 version heading to U.S. Cellular and Cricket. The two carriers also stock a Galaxy S3 version, model number SCH-R530.

What's interesting about the Sprint model is that it will sport global roaming support. The SPH-L720 comes with CDMA, LTE, GSM and WCDMA 850/1900 support.

Obviously, we're still waiting for most U.S. carriers to formally announce the arrival of the Galaxy S4. During its first Unpacked media event of the year, Samsung said the phone will hit stores in late April, and at the time we wondered whether U.S. carriers will launch the device around the same time with international mobile operators.

fcc-galaxy-s4-sprint-us-cellular-cricket-1

The Galaxy S4 will hit Europe first (on April 26 in the UK,) but it will be quickly followed by at least one U.S. launch, T-Mobile's. The carrier confirmed that the phone will be available to customers come May 1, for $99 off contract, although monthly installments to pay for the phone in full will be included.

What carrier are you buying the Galaxy S4 from?

Asus Padfone Infinity priced in Taiwan, shipping to start next week

Asus PadFone Infinity

You can say whatever you want about Asus, but one thing you can't call the company is a quitter. Despite not being able to make the first Padfone or the second-gen mainstream sales hits, the Taiwanese have pushed ahead with the concept of the phone/tablet hybrid by unveiling a third such combo – the Padfone Infinity.

And it looks like Asus has learned something from past mistakes, because the third-gen Padfone has a good shot in reaching stores all around Asia and Europe by the end of April. For now, the Infinity is only available for pre-orders in Taiwan, with the official rollout slated for next week.

Unfortunately, one past mistake that seems bound to repeat itself again and again relates to pricing. The Taiwanese Infinity starts at a whopping 20,990 TWD, or $702. That's for the 32 GB smartphone alone, mind you, while the tablet dock goes for an extra 5,000 TWD ($167).

Asus Padfone Infinity aa 600px (1)

The 64 GB phone is naturally even more expensive, going for a full 22,990 TWD, or $770. We're not saying you don't get what you pay for, as the 5-incher sports a stunning Full HD panel and comes with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean in tow, as well as a quad-core Snapdragon 600 CPU, 2 GB of RAM and a 2,400 mAh battery.

If you add the Padfone Station in the mix, you can get a 10.1-inch tablet too and one that's rather impressive, with a 1,920 x 1,080 pix res screen and 5,000 mAh battery. And yet we can't shake the feeling Asus needs to shave something off that pricing structure to draw in the Western crowds. Do you agree or are you planning to break the bank to get the phone cum tab combo anyway?

Amazon launches X-Ray for TV, helps you identify actors with a single tap

Posted: 28 Mar 2013 02:50 AM PDT

Kindle Fire HD

Following the introduction of X-Ray for Movies last year, Amazon is expanding the feature to TV shows offered on Amazon Instant Video.

Powered by IMDB, possibly the world's biggest reference website for anything that has to do with films and television, X-Ray for TV allows viewers to tap into the wealth of information from the massive online database. If you're wondering just who plays the kick-ass samurai-wielding Michonne on The Walking Dead, just tap on the screen as her character appears to get her name and other gigs.

Other supported TV shows include Justified, Downtown Abbey, The West Wing, Sons of Anarchy, Falling Skies, American Horror Story, Grey's Anatomy, Doctor Who, Lost, Glee, Breaking Bad, and Game of Thrones. Amazon said that more shows will be added in the future.

A similar feature was introduced for Google Movies & TV app yesterday. In their case, the data is pulled from Google's Knowledge Graph and then presented as info cards that pop up on the screen a la Google Now.

Amazon Expands X-Ray to TV, Powered by IMDb and Available on the Kindle Fire Family

Six months ago, Amazon and IMDb introduced “X-Ray for Movies,” a new feature that revolutionized the movie viewing experience by bringing the power of IMDb directly to movies on Kindle Fire HD. With a single tap viewers can discover the names of the actors appearing on the screen and what they’ve been in. Today, Amazon announced that it is expanding X-Ray to TV, bringing the seamless, fully-integrated X-Ray experience to TV shows. Available today for the most popular TV shows on Amazon, X-Ray will quickly expand to even more shows. IMDb, an Amazon company for 14 years, is the world’s most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content, with more than 160 million monthly unique visitors worldwide. X-Ray for TV is also available as part of the free Amazon Instant Video app on Wii U.

“X-Ray has been one of the most loved features on Kindle Fire HD since it launched last September,” said Peter Larsen, Vice President, Amazon Kindle. “For people who are passionate about movies and TV, there is no better way to watch than on Kindle Fire HD, which combines an exceptional viewing experience with the unbelievable power of the over 100 million pieces of data in IMDb’s catalog.”

“For over 20 years we have been cultivating a vast database of movie, TV and celebrity content,” said Col Needham, IMDb Founder and CEO. “Can’t remember where you’ve seen the actor playing Lord Grantham in Downton Abbey? No problem. Simply tap on the screen and you’ll see a full filmography, where you’ll realize that Hugh Bonneville was also in Notting Hill. Our vision is to make X-Ray available on every movie and TV show-we’re excited to make another big step forward today, and we are working hard to add X-Ray to more TV shows and movies in the future.”

X-Ray for TV is available starting today on the most popular TV shows from Amazon Instant Video, many of which are also available as part of Prime Instant Video: Justified, Downton Abbey, The West Wing, Sons of Anarchy, Falling Skies, American Horror Story, Grey’s Anatomy, Doctor Who, The Walking Dead, Lost, Glee, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones.

Amazon Instant Video offers customers the ability to rent, purchase or subscribe to a huge catalog of videos. Customers can choose from more than 150,000 titles to purchase or rent and content ranges from new release movies to classic favorites, major television shows, entire seasons, or even day after air TV. Prime Instant Video is Amazon’s video subscription offer-it includes more than 38,000 movies and TV episodes selected from the full assortment available at Amazon Instant Video. This subscription offer allows US Prime customers to stream as many titles from Prime Instant Video as they like, at no additional cost.

Customers can learn more about X-Ray at www.imdb.com/x-ray, and can experience X-Ray for themselves on the latest generation Kindle Fire or Kindle Fire HD or with the Amazon Instant Video app on Wii U.

ZTE Grand S and Grand Memo go up for sale in China for pretty decent prices

Posted: 28 Mar 2013 02:19 AM PDT

ZTE Grand S aa 600 3

After snatching the spotlight both at CES in January and MWC in February, ZTE decided to take a breather and got back in the shadows for a little while. But the Chinese were obviously cooking up the Grand S and Grand Memo launches, which have finally taken place earlier today.

Naturally, the duo has gone up for grabs only in China for now, but chances are the two big guys will take Europe by storm as soon as next month. Only we don't think they'll cost as much as some retailers on the old continent claimed, given they're pretty affordable in their homeland.

Right in line with rumors from last week, the Grand S costs 3,399 Yuan, or $542, while the Grand Memo is available for 2,688 Yuan ($428).

Mind you, the Memo is not quite as impressive as it looks, despite rocking a massive 5.7-inch display. The resolution is only 720p, the 1.5 GHz quad-core processor beneath the hood is an already oldie Snapdragon S4 Pro and it appears there's just 1 gig of RAM too.

ZTE Grand Memo aa 600 1

ZTE is still going forward with the idea of issuing the Grand Memo in several different editions, one of which will supposedly pack a Snapdragon 800 CPU alongside 2 GB of RAM. We have no idea when that version might hit stores, but the first model to land in Europe will still step things up a notch compared with the Chinese version, sporting a Snapdragon 600 SoC and, hopefully, 2 GB of RAM.

As for the Grand S, that's a machine just short of perfection, with only one major flaw – a meager, non-removable 1,780 mAh battery. Aside from that, the 5-incher boasts a Full HD screen and packs a 1.7 GHz S4 Pro CPU and 2 GB of RAM inside a 6.9 mm thin body.

The thing has microSD support for expanding the 16 GB of on-board storage, a nice 13 MP camera on the back and a more than decent 2 MP snapper fitted on the front. What more could you want?

HTC One vs iPhone 5 drop test! (video)

HTC One vs iPhone 5 Drop Test featured

If there's one thing we at Android Authority are famous for (or is it infamous?) is the way we do our drop tests. Yeah, we love to send shiny new gadgets to their premature deaths, which usually involves a stretch of hard concrete and a generous serving of slow motion.

Last year in Hong Kong, our Darcy LaCouvee was in charge with drop testing the Galaxy S3 and the just released iPhone 5. As much as we hated the outcome of that test, we had to give it to the iPhone, which survived the ordeal with just minor bruising. The Galaxy S3 didn't fare so well, ending up with a shattered screen and a popped back cover.

But the Galaxy S3 was made of plastic. How would an aluminum-built Android flagship do in a drop test?

To find out, Joshua Vergara, our new international man of gadget destruction, took the HTC One, with its snazzy aluminum chassis, and pitched it against the current standard for build quality, the iPhone 5, in an epic drop test.

Just like we did before, in our HTC One vs iPhone 5 drop test we tried to simulate some of the mishaps that can happen in real life. So we dropped the two phones from three different heights – from pocket level, from chest level, and from head level. To top it off, we dropped the ill-fated gadgets face down from head level, in a final attempt to test their durability.

And boy, we broke them. No, I will not spoil the fun, just watch the video below.

There you have it – the first HTC One vs iPhone 5 drop test on the internet. Impressed? Horrified? Which device do you think is better? Let us know what you think in the comments and check out our image gallery below.

How to take screenshots on Android

Posted: 28 Mar 2013 12:33 AM PDT

how-to-take-screenshots-android-0054

There are times when you really need to share to others what’s on your Android device’s screen. At such moments, you’ll need to capture screenshots, which are nothing more than snapshots of whatever is currently showing on your screen. App developers take lots of screenshots to document their apps. Writers take screenshots to complement their online posts. Some gamers take screenshots of their game sessions. There are varied reasons for needing screenshots.

The good news is that taking screenshots on Android is a very easy task. You can do it blindfolded. Do you know how?

In this guide, learn how to take screenshots on Android. (You may also watch our video tutorial at the end of this post.)

General Procedure

Capturing a screenshot usually involves pressing two buttons on your Android device — either the Volume Down key and the Power button, or the Home button and the Power key.

When the right button combo is pressed, your device’s screen will flash, usually accompanied with a camera shutter sound. Sometimes, a pop-up message or notification alert appears, suggesting that the screenshot has been made.

how-to-take-screenshots-android-0055

At other times, you can find a screenshot option on the Power menu. Just long press the Power button, wait for the Power menu to appear, and select Take screenshot to capture a screenshot of the current screen. This can be a useful method, especially when pressing combos of physical buttons is difficult, such as on the Sony Xperia V.

how-to-take-screenshots-android-0056

Android device manufacturers even include extra and unique ways of taking screenshots on your device. For instance, you can take a screenshot on the Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note 2 using the S Pen. In most high-end Samsung phones, you can take a screenshot by swiping the screen with the side of your palm. There are alternate ways to capture screenshots, and those may or may not be mentioned in this guide.

Important Note: The procedures described in this post are for stock software. Procedures for capturing screenshots under custom ROMs may be different.

Screenshots on Samsung devices

Devices with physical Home button

For many high-end Samsung phones with a physical Home button, you can use the Home + Power button combo to take screenshots.

how-to-take-screenshots-android-0058

Just press the two buttons simultaneously until the sides of the screen flash and you hear the camera shutter sound.

You will also get a notification confirming that the screenshot has been captured.

Devices without physical Home button

how-to-take-screenshots-android-0060

Some Samsung devices (e.g., Galaxy Note 10.1 and Galaxy Camera), however, don’t have a physical Home button. In this case, the button combo is Volume Down and Power. Hold down both buttons until your device takes a screenshot.

how-to-take-screenshots-android-0061

Certain devices, such as the Galaxy Note 10.1, also have a quick launch button that can be set to capture screenshots. On the the Galaxy Note 10.1, this quick launch button sits right beside the Multitasking virtual button on the virtual navigation bar.

Devices with S Pen

how-to-take-screenshots-android-0063

On Samsung devices that come with the S Pen (e.g., the Galaxy Note series), you can use the stylus itself to take a screenshot. Just hold down the S Pen button and touch the pen tip on the device’s screen until the screen flashes. Usually, after the screenshot is captured, the image will be immediately opened for editing. Just remember to save the edited screenshot afterwards.

Devices with hand motions support

how-to-take-screenshots-android-0064

Most high-end Samsung phones also let you capture screenshots by swiping the screen with the side of your hand. For this method to work, go to Settings > Motion and activate the “Palm swipe to capture” option.

Screenshots on HTC devices

how-to-take-screenshots-android-0065

On HTC devices, capturing a screenshot still involves the Home and Power buttons. But, instead of simultaneously holding them down, you hold down the Power button first, then tap the capacitive Home button quickly. The screen flashes, and you’ll hear audible feedback. You will also see a popup message confirming that your screenshot has been saved.

Screenshots on Sony Xperia devices

how-to-take-screenshots-android-0066

On Sony Xperia phones, the screenshot combo is Volume Down + Power. Hold down both buttons at the same time until the screen flashes and the screenshot thumbnail appears on the screen. A notification also appears on the notification menu once the screenshot has been captured.

There’s an alternate method, too. You can also capture a screenshot through the Power menu. Hold down the Power button until the Power dialog appears. Tap on Take Screenshot to capture the screen underneath the dialog.

Screenshots on LG devices

On LG devices, the button combination is still Volume Down + Power. Long-press these buttons at the same time until the screen flashes and you hear the capture tone. A notification also appears on the notification menu once the screenshot is captured.

how-to-take-screenshots-android-0067

You can also take a screenshot with Quick Memo, which can instantly capture and let you create doodles on your screenshots. You can toggle Quick Memo from the notification shade. Once enabled, the editing page will then appear. You can now write notes and doodles on the current screen. Tap the floppy disk icon to save your work.

Screenshots on Nexus devices

how-to-take-screenshots-android-0068

Capturing screenshots on the Google Nexus devices (i.e., Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10) remains uniform — hold down both Volume Down and Power keys until you hear audio feedback. The screenshot thumbnail will flash briefly on the screen, and you will get a notification about your screenshot.

Video Guide

Taking screenshots on Android is very easy! Watch our video guide to learn how:

Conclusion

Capturing a screenshot on your Android device is easy. With screenshots, you can easily share what’s on your Android device to everyone. What Android device do you own? How do you capture screenshots on it? Share your screenshotting tales in the comments.

Android malware now being used to target political activists

Posted: 27 Mar 2013 10:35 PM PDT

As much as we would rather not report on yet another Android malware scare (we think security issues are overblown and that any platform is vulnerable, anyway), this one seems to be a first in the Android ecosystem. Security researchers have discovered what may be the first targeted Android malware attack, which is basically a smartly-crafted social engineering attack that specifically targeted a Tibetan activist, with the intent of spreading itself through the target’s contacts, thereby gaining access to their devices and information.

According to Russian security company Kaspersky Labs, hackers broke into the victim’s email account and distributed Android malware to this person’s contact list. The malware did the following:

  • The lure was a supposed statement on a recent conference organized by the World Uyghur Congress (WUC), which brought together democracy and human-rights activists from Tibet, Southern Mongolia and East Turkestan.
  • The attachment was supposedly a letter from related organizations — something that should pique the interest of any human-rights activist wanting to further their cause.
  • The file is actually an Android APK that installs itself as an app called “Conference.” When opened, the app actually presents a fake message supposedly from the WUC chairman.
  • The payload, however, is actually a backdoor to the server that can be controlled via SMS. This way, the phone can be controlled even without a data connection (or will perhaps activate a connection).
  • The app sends back a message to the hackers’ servers reporting a successful installation. The app then sends the user’s contact list, SMS messages, call logs, geo-location data, basically all relevant data that a spy would want.

According to Kaspersky, the server is located at a Los Angeles-based data center, and the box actually hosts other Android malware. The server hosts a web-based interface that gives hackers remote-control access to their “slave” smartphones. The fact that the UI is in Chinese is probably indicative of the source of the attacks. The server’s IP address is actually registered to a Chinese company in Beijing.

Cyber-warfare is deemed to be the next frontier in warfare, which is why even the US government is actually beefing up its security assets. This even includes hiring talented hackers straight out of school, in the hope of improving both offensive and defensive capabilities. Meanwhile, restrictive regimes are likely to want to keep tabs on their supposed “enemies of the state.” And because data contained in smartphones will usually contain potentially incriminating contact lists, messages and even location data, this makes the targeted attack all the more effective.

True enough, Android malware won’t eat your children, but this doesn’t mean you can go ahead and be carefree or careless with the apps you install. This especially goes if you know you have enemies (online or otherwise), and you have information to protect.

inmobi app publish feature

Even though we always recommend using only the Google Play Store to avoid falling victim to malicious apps, the growing number of applications on the Play Store makes it harder and harder for developers, especially independent developers, to have their apps discovered. While there are numerous third-party app stores out there, it can be a tedious process to publish your application on each and every one.

Not anymore! With App Publish, brought to you by InMobi, you can distribute your app across more than 130 stores by following a few simple steps. And the best part – It’s free! InMobi, the popular mobile advertising tech firm, lists a few reasons why you should consider App Publish, including -

According to InMobi, using alternate app stores can bring thousands of downloads for developers, and with so many app store options open to you, it will surely help developers monetize their apps with more success. The long list of app store partners include T-Mobile, Mobango, Optus, and SlideME, just to name a few. InMobi also mentioned that early beta-testers of the App Publish platform have seen a 30% increase in the number of downloads of their apps.

The process itself is very simple as well. After creating an account and logging in, all you need to do is upload your app, select the relevant app stores, upload marketing content such as more information and images of your app, a final review, and you’re done!
