The first batches of Google Glass could be made inside the U.S.

It appears Google may manufacture units of their infamous Google Glass in the U.S, as opposed to abroad. According to a new report from the Financial Times, Google will work with Foxconn to produce units of Google Glass in Silicon Valley, California. This idea that Google will manufacture Google Glass locally is no surprise really. Google’s headquarters is located in Mountain View, California, while Foxconn’s manufacturing plant is steps away in Santa Clara, California— so it makes sense that an innovative product such as Google Glass would require special attention by Google and be manufactured locally, as opposed to being manufactured abroad and would almost be an expensive proposition for the search giant.

So far this decision is only mentioned to be for the initial 8,000 units meant for contest winners who won the #IfIHadGlass contest earlier this year. Whether or not Google plans to keep production within the U.S. after a global launch remains to be seen.

Google adds info cards to Play Movies app

Posted: 27 Mar 2013 02:49 PM PDT

Google loves their info cards they introduced with Google Now, and they love giving you access to more information in your media, like what we’ve seen in the Sound Search widget in Jelly Bean. Well, if you’re a big movie watcher, Google’s implemented a nice little surprise for you.

Whenever you’re watching a movie and you’re curious about the actor on screen or the music playing in the movie at that moment, you can simply pause your video and a handful of info cards will pop up on screen to give you actor names, other movies the actors have been in, song names, etc. Tapping the actor’s face will even give you his (or her) full biography. Resuming the movie or show will cause the info cards to disappear until you pause again. Right now the info cards won’t show up on every single movie you watch, but Google says the list is quite large and they’re adding to it every day.

Sound interested? Just update to the latest Play Movies and TV app and start playing around with it. This will give you a great excuse to catch up on all those movies you’ve been itching to see.

Featured Android Game Review: Aces Gin Rummy [Cards & Casino]

Normally I wouldn’t review a card game app because there are so many out there, but since Concrete Software is one of our favorite developers, I wanted to check it out. Now the closest thing I have played to Gin Rummy was Rummykub, which was many many moons ago. So forgetting the app itself, I had to learn how to play the game. Thankfully Concrete Software included a really nice tutorial with all the rules. At first it seemed complicated, but after one match, I wasn’t a pro, but I was well on my way to understanding how to play.

I won’t get into the rules itself, but what’s cool about Gin Rummy is the games are fairly quick. A match may consist of many games, but the games only last a few minutes. The app automatically sorts your cards and creates your melds, which makes it move really quick. Best of all is that if you need to stop playing for whatever reason, you can simply pick up where you left off.

Upon opening the game for the first time, you should go into the settings and set your avatar as well as your player name. Then it’s a matter of setting the difficulty to easy, medium, or hard. Lastly, you can set how many points will win the match (100,200,300,400). Now it’s time to start a game. Just tap on New or Resume if you already have a game going. The cards will be dealt and any melds that you have will automatically be created. It’s just a matter of tapping on which card you want and swiping the card that you will return. Your total deadwood will always be shown at the bottom right along with the minimum number you need to knock. Once you’re in a position to knock or go for Gin, the respective option will appear at the bottom right. Once either your opponent or yourself either knocks or goes for Gin, everything will be totaled automatically.

Aces Gin Rummy looks pleasing and the sound effects are spot on. It’s a card game so you aren’t going to get any explosive effects, but it looks great as all Concrete games do. So if you are into cards game or if you’re looking for something new to play, then try Aces Gin Rummy. I am thoroughly enjoying it on my Nexus 7, but it will work on just about any device with Android 2.2 or higher. It’s absolutely free!! Check out my hands on video below as well as their trailer, and hit one of my download links to get started. Let me know what you think.

Google Translate gets offline language packs

Google_Translate_Offline_Pack

Google Translate has just gotten a little easier for those of us who happen to encounter a foreign language or two when out and about. Android Associate Product Manager Mingi Jiang announced that Google has launched some offline language packs that will be available for all Google Translate users running on Gingerbread+ devices. Users can simply select “Offline Languages” in the app menu to see all the offline language packages available for download. Then, to enable offline translation between any two languages, users just need to select them in the offline languages menu. Once the packages are downloaded, users can take advantage of being able to translate general phrases from up to 50 different languages— especially useful for those of you that travel in places with a poor wireless signal or no internet connection at all.

As exciting as this is, don’t expect the offline language packs to tell you how to ask that smokin’ hot person you met at a coffee shop out on a date just yet— can’t say Google Translate can help you there.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 goes through extensive battery testing, shows it can stay on for possibly 3 days

Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 has rightfully arrived with much praise and enthusiasm thanks to its awesome internals and custom software, but how will the phone and its awesome features hold up in real-world use? Well friends, it appears the Galaxy S 4′s 2,600mAh battery certainly packs a bigger punch than one could have ever imagined. Thanks to our friends at GSMArena, extensive testing indicate the Galaxy S 4 excels in three testing categories that make up the average smartphone user’s daily activities:

  • Talk time – 13 hours, 53 min
  • Web browsing – 8 hours, 42 min
  • Video playback – 10 hours, 16 min

While those results clearly place the smartphone in direct competition with other premium smartphones out there— the Galaxy S 4 essentially trumps everything out there on the “endurance ratings“, which are combined measurements showing how long a device could potentially last in real life. Hypothetically speaking, if a Galaxy S 4 owner did one hour of calling, web browsing and video watching every day— the smartphone would last for an astounding 63 hours— 3 days! Pretty impressive, right?

UK carrier Three to launch 4G LTE, just not before the end of the year

Posted: 27 Mar 2013 12:26 PM PDT

threeUK

If you’re a Three customer in the UK, you’ll be pleased to know that Three‘s CEO Dave Dyson is excited about his company’s 4G LTE rollout, and vaguely discussed it during a quarterly earnings call yesterday. Unfortunately, he’s in “no rush for LTE,” and by that he means you shouldn’t actually expect it until later this year. Like, Q4 of this year. We know waiting is really, really hard to do, but hey, this is going to make a great Christmas present from your cellular provider.

He did also say that Three has no plans to charge their customers extra for LTE, so that’s another plus. According to Dyson, Three wants to see how competing companies set up their 4G before making any huge moves into the LTE space, so that’s a pretty sound decision. Better to do something right and take a bit longer the first time instead of rushing through it and putting out a bad product.

Free Tablet From Carphone Warehouse When You Pre-Order The Galaxy S 4 Starting March 28

Samsung Galaxy S 4

The Samsung Galaxy S 4 will launch very soon and starting March 28 in the UK, Carphone Warehouse will give pre-order customers a free Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 tablet. To qualify for this exclusive deal, you’ll have to be one of the first 2,000 to pre-order the Galaxy S 4 which is expected to launch April 26. Customers will also receive a free car charger, screen protector, and case. Carphone Warehouse COO Graham Stapelton believes its retail stores could be even busier than the holiday season during the launch of the Galaxy S 4. Considering Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 destroyed pre-registrations for the Galaxy S III, Graham could be right.

The original Sonic the Hedgehog coming to Android in April according to SEGA

At the Game Developers Conference 2013 today, SEGA dropped some news for fans of the old school fun known as Sonic the Hedgehog. The original version of the game has been remastered to run natively on Android devices and is expected to be available in April for $2.99. Hopefully the combination of sensors in modern smartphones and tablets, combined with some touchscreen controls, will prove to be a powerful combination with a game that did such a good job of portraying a sense of speed. Some gameplay video is expected to be released so that may give us a better idea of what to expect. SEGA also indicated they are working on Sonic 2 and progress is on schedule.

Verizon Announces Playphone Games Portal, Coming Q2 2013

Posted: 27 Mar 2013 10:23 AM PDT

Playphone Games Portal

Verizon is at this year’s Gaming Developers Conference in San Francisco, and announced the Playphone Games Portal which will hit Verizon devices in the second quarter. Powered by social gaming network Playphone, it’ll compete directly with the Google Play Store and allow Verizon to generate more revenue. What makes the Playphone Games Portal different from Google Play is the ability to interact with friends and purchases. A “friends” page within the application will allow you to see all your friends’ game activity and you can easily challenge them to a game, or invite them to games that you play.

As far as what games you’ll be able to choose from, there are currently a lot of relatively unknown titles. However, Verizon is hoping to get more developers on-board and by going to the Playphone Games Portal website, you can sign up and download the SDK for free. Games submitted to the Playphone Games Portal will also be published to Google Play which allows game developers to knock two birds out with one stone.

Apple Claims Reduction Of Samsung Damages Was An $85 Million Mistake

Posted: 27 Mar 2013 09:45 AM PDT

Apple vs Samsung

Samsung can’t seem to shake Apple off its back and although damages of $599 million were awarded to Apple, the tech giant still isn’t satisfied. In documents filed by Apple, they claim Judge Lucy Koh made an $85 million error in calculating damages. Supposedly, Koh thought the jury had granted $44,792,974 for the Infuse 4G and $40,494,356 for the Galaxy S II on AT&T. However, according to Apple, Samsung’s own statements prove that “disgorgement of profits for design patent infringement”, were permissible.

In that case, Apple claims they should be awarded damages from 16 products, not 14, and would increase the damages to $685 million. Still, that’s about $365 million less than the original verdict. Moving forward, Apple wants Koh to redetermine the damages immediately while Samsung wants a stay, “a suspension of a case or a suspension of a particular proceeding within a case”, as it believes Apple’s findings are premature.
