Google beating Facebook in the advertising war

Posted: 20 Sep 2012 03:20 AM PDT

It's easy to forget that Google is primarily an advertising company. Everything it does is about capturing more eyeballs for adverts and getting better at serving those ads to the right demographic. The company is very good at it too.

According to EMarketer estimates, Google is the undisputed lord and master of online advertising. We already knew it was topping the charts for Web-search ads and mobile ads, now we learn it is beating Facebook on display ads too. Display ads are basically bigger ads with graphical or even interactive elements and also video ads. Google has been selling them to millions of non-Google sites and also using YouTube to serve them up to the masses.

The EMarketer report suggests that has led to net display-ad revenue of $2.31 billion for Google, which is 15.4 percent of the total U.S. market. That compares to $2.16 billion for Facebook, which is 14.4 percent of the total U.S. market. That figure doesn't take into account what Google pays to partner sites, its so-called "traffic acquisition costs" but it is still an impressive chunk of change.

Google has been fighting hard for this market. It outlaid over $4 billion to acquire companies like DoubleClick and to develop an easy-to-use platform for advertisers and publishers. Google is really aiming to be a one-stop-shop capable of covering everything a marketing campaign needs. It is gobbling up market share from Yahoo and AOL and more than holding its own against Facebook.

We heard the Facebook search rumor recently about the possibility of the social media giant attempting to get into the search engine business. That was probably just Zuckerberg trying and succeeding in getting a share price boost. What is certain, though, is that Facebook and Google will be going toe-to-toe in the advertising market for the foreseeable future and it could get nasty.

Android 4.0.4 ICS update heading to AT&T’s Sony Xperia Ion

Posted: 20 Sep 2012 02:41 AM PDT

Releasing a flagship phone with an outdated version of Android was one of the factors that led to a not-so-impressive Sony Xperia Ion. But to the delight of owners of the phone, Sony is making good on its promise to provide a swift upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich. After we saw the Android 4.0 firmware hitting the LTE variant of the phone a few days back, the update is reportedly coming to the Xperia Ion on AT&T.

You should already see the update notification on your Sony Xperia Ion LT28AT.  However, the update may only be downloaded and installed when you connect the phone to your PC and run Sony's PC companion software, SuS.

It looks like there are two updates available: build 6.1.c.1.105 and .107. Since there's no official change log yet, we can't tell the difference between the two at this time. Some folks have reported that they were able to go to .107 without a hitch, while some said that the .105 update keeps popping up even when they're already on .107. Hopefully AT&T can clear this confusion by the time they make the update official today.

Regardless of the not-so-smooth roll out, it's an update that's worth the slight hassle. Aside from the smoothness that it brings to the Xperia Ion, there are also the many perks that ICS comes with. If you’re an Xperia Ion user, please do share if you have encountered any difficulties while updating the phone. How do you like ICS on your Ion?

PlayStation Mobile with 30 games comes to Android on October 3

Posted: 20 Sep 2012 02:38 AM PDT

Gen Game

Sony's PlayStation Mobile will be open for business on the Android platform from October 3. It's basically a section in the PlayStation Store which Sony will use to sell a hand-picked selection of “bite-sized games” for Android smartphones and tablets.

It will work on PlayStation Certified Android devices including the majority of Sony's Xperia line-up and also the PlayStation Vita. Sony has also announced a few partners that will release PlayStation Certified devices at some point – so far we have HTC, Fujitsu, Sharp, ASUS, and Wikipad.

We learned a few PlayStation Mobile details last month, including the fact that the new service will launch with 30 games. We now know it will launch in Japan, USA, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Australia on October 3 and the games will cost between 50 yen and 850 yen (that's about 40 pence or 60 cents and £6.70 or $10.90).

Following up the release there's also the news that the PlayStation Mobile SDK will roll out in November and you can get a developer license for an annual fee of $99.99. Developers like THQ and Team 17 have already signed up to develop content for the service and they're sure to be joined by a new wave of indies when the SDK is made available.

Any game purchases you make will be tied to your PlayStation Network ID so you'll actually be able to buy a game once and then play it on any PlayStation Certified device you own.

It will be interesting to see what the games are, especially those developed by Sony and other major game development studios.

T-Mobile to offer The Avengers movie for free for Galaxy S3 owners starting September 25

Posted: 20 Sep 2012 02:19 AM PDT

The overall excitement surrounding Marvel's The Avengers movie might have toned down a bit in the past couple of months — after all, everybody's seen it — but I'm sure there are a still a lot of comic book and film fans eagerly awaiting the Avengers’ assembly on Blu-Ray and DVD.

The biggest blockbuster of the year, and the third highest-grossing movie of all time, is one piece of cinematic art you absolutely need to own. But if you're not keen on spending money on the DVD there's a more convenient way for you to get the film. And no, it doesn't involve any illegal torrent downloading activities (not that we'd know anything about something like that).

Instead, all you’ll need is a T-Mobile's Samsung Galaxy S3 — these phoneswill get the exclusive opportunity of downloading the HD Avengers movie for free starting on September 25. You will be able to get the movie by simply visiting Samsung Media Hub on your GS3, and the offer will have no catches, no special conditions and no hidden agendas, so it is what it is: a licensed movie completely for free.

Moreover, you'll be able to enjoy the blockbuster not only on your phone, but also on any HDMI-capable TV set courtesy of the Samsung AllShare Cast Wireless Hub. That's an accessory we've heard a lot about for a pretty long time, but which we haven't seen available for sale at many retailers.

Until now that is, because T-Mobile will be putting the Wireless Hub up for grabs online and in retail stores starting September 24 for $99.99. The price might seem a bit steep, but the dongle does let you share any kind of licensed content, including TV shows and movies, from Samsung Media Hub to an HDTV of your choice (including non-Samsung brands).

Like The Avengers, the Samsung Galaxy S3 might have gotten itself a bit overshadowed these past couple of months by newly released high-end phones like the Galaxy Note 2, LG Optimus G or Apple iPhone 5. This marketing move, however, should help bring some of the spotlight back and make people remember that this is still one heck of a phone, probably the best in the world. If you think the same and you haven’t purchased it yet, T-Mobile has it for as low as $279.99.

There’s a lot of Avengers excitement going on in the Android world, with an official game being teased by Marvel, so fans of the franchise should not get too bored while waiting for the sequel. Not to mention there’s also an Iron Man 3 just around the corner. Groovy!

Rhapsody on Android gets much needed update

Posted: 20 Sep 2012 02:13 AM PDT

You remember Rhapsody right? It’s the free-for-all streaming service, direct competitor to Pandora and Last.fm. It seems Realplayer Studios is upping the ante with a few updated or entirely new key features.

First off, the ability to download individual albums and tracks to phone storage or memory card is quite nice. For those of in congested signal areas or not living in LTE-rich cities, this is a great option to “offline buffer” your music. The last update, which included better streaming by 30% will only help your chances of an uninterrupted listening experience.

For those of you who prefer the Android version to the web interface, there’s some quirks in amongst the goodies offered in this latest release. For instance, the web version shows artist bios but the Android app doesn’t. We can’t quite determine why, but we figure Rhapsody is a work in progress. Pricing structure and rules are a bit odd as well: It’s a free app from the Google Play Store, but a trial or subscription is required for music playback. What gives?

Speaking of pricing, a summer sale is still underway. The usual $10 for unlimited music streaming is now slashed to a measly $5 for the first 3 months. Sounds like a win to us!

LG’s official Optimus G demo video shows off features we didn’t know about

Posted: 20 Sep 2012 01:57 AM PDT

LG has just uploaded a six minute video to YouTube where they demo several of the new features in their most recent flagship device, the Optimus G. We’re a little upset with some of the language that the company used. They say the video is the “first review” of the device, which it isn’t, because companies can’t review their own devices. They also say that the 13 megapixel camera in the Optimus G is the highest megapixel camera on the market, but again, it isn’t. HTC made the 16 megapixel Titan II Windows Phone, and Nokia made the 41 megapixel 808 PureView. We also can’t help but laugh when LG shows off their lock screen. The guy doing the demo taps the display and guess what sound the Optimus G makes? The exact same water droplet noise that Samsung put in the hugely popular Galaxy S3.

But enough about the bad things, what’s awesome about this phone? You know pinch to zoom and how that works on photos, right? Well, LG has now done that to videos. They’ve also added the pinch to zoom gesture to the photo gallery, so you can view teeny tiny thumbnails, or huge thumbnails, whatever suites your taste. Most impressive is the voice activated shutter. Say “cheese” or “LG” while using the camera app and it’ll snap a photo for you!

We’ll know more about the Optimus G once we get our hands on one. It’s expected to hit the market in November, which isn’t too far off. There’s even rumors floating around that LG is going to make a Nexus version of the Optimus G. If true, that would be totally wild, because there’s nothing out on the market that currently compete’s with the G in terms of specs.

It’s a device that’s in a class of its own.

Third series of famous Android toys out next week

Posted: 20 Sep 2012 01:39 AM PDT

So you say you like Android? You like to collect robot figurines? Well, fellow Android enthusiast, you’re in good company with Dyzplastic, maker of Android figurines worldwide. The company’s third series is due starting next week via Dead Zebra.

You have to admit, the logo for Android is a cute little fella, and a few of us out there have gone completely nuts. Some of us have stickers on our vehicles, little robots pervading our desks like Christmas fare year round, and even Android inspired clothes. For those I just mentioned, the idea of having another little lovepiece for public view is no big deal. In fact, it may be a source of pride!

Here’s what you’re looking at for the 3rd series:

As you can see the clear Android has a little Android inside. The well-crafted and articulated head, arms and feet can be twisted to have the figurine sit up, prop up against a cubicle wall or lay down on a vehicle dash. Really, the possibilities to place it are endless. The clear model comes at a 1/16 ratio while the red model has a 2/16 scale.

As far as where to go besides Dead Zebra, you should be able to find them at the same place you pick up other collectibles, toys or comics. As for dates, if you order online, shipments are planned to go out on the 26th, and if you buy at a physical retail store, the 24th is your best bet for getting your Android collectible fix.

How many of you are planning to buy these little cuties? If so, have you bought any from the other two series?

Facebook is testing an automatic photo uploading feature for Android

Posted: 20 Sep 2012 12:15 AM PDT

You know that person at the party who takes a photo of someone doing something stupid and then spends the next 60 seconds or so fiddling with their device to put that image on Facebook so that everyone in their timeline can see how much “fun” they’re having? No one likes that person, and Facebook is trying to eradicate that kind of behavior. According to The Verge, Facebook is testing a feature whereby every photo you take is automatically uploaded to a special private album. Here’s how it works: You’re at a party, you’re taking a bunch of photos, and then when you come home you go to that private album and figure out which photos to share with your friends. It’s something Apple does with Photo Stream, it’s something Google does with Google+, and we’re delighted to hear that Facebook is jumping in on this too.

Privacy nuts are probably going to freak out, but again, we want to emphasize that this isn’t automatic sharing. It’s simply automatic uploading. Can Facebook do something really evil like run facial recognition algorithms to spot who’s in your photos? They could, but why would they?

Back to the new feature, it’s not turned on for all Android users just yet. It’s currently being tested at a “really small” scale. That being said, if you want the convenience of automatic photo uploading then you could just as easily do this sort of thing with a service like Dropbox. You could also install an app called “AirDroid” that will let you access your photos from your computer without the need to go through a third party cloud service. That option in particular should appease the ultra paranoid.

Samsung to build a new R&D Center right in Google’s backyard

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 11:45 PM PDT

Google, the company that makes the Android operating system that everyone should be using, is based in Mountain View, California. Samsung, the company that makes a significant portion of the Android devices that we spend our hard earned money on, has just announced that they’re going to open a new R&D Center in that very same city. Construction is set to begin during the second half of next year, and Samsung hopes that people will actually start working there in 2014. When complete, the campus will stretch across a massive 8.5 acre plot of land. Two six story office buildings will be erected, giving Samsung approximately 385,000 square feet of space to let their employees do their thing.

How should you interpret this news? There are multiple angles here. First, Samsung could be acknowledging that without Google, they can’t succeed. When you stop and think about it, Samsung was just a “meh” handset maker before they started making Android phones. Putting an R&D Center in Google’s backyard could be seen as a gesture of good will, a sign that the company wants to collaborate even further with Google.

The second, more sinister interpretation, is that Samsung wants to hire some of the talent in the area, possibly even steal some Google employees, so that they can build their own operating system. That would let them control their future, make them less dependent on Google, and possibly create something new and beautiful. Knowing TouchWIZ however … we doubt the “beautiful” part.

And finally there’s the business angle. Remember how Nokia created a brand called “Ovi” and then bought up a bunch of small companies so they could give their users services such as file sharing, photo sharing, instant messaging, and so on and so forth? Samsung could be planning to do the same thing. They could hire a bunch of startups, shove them all in a building, and hope that whatever they pop out is awesome.

What’s up with HTC and Windows Phone? Where’s the Android love?

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 11:18 PM PDT

HTC announced two Windows Phones at an event in New York City yesterday. We didn’t cover those devices on this site for obvious reasons, but everyone at Android Central tuned into the live blogs to hear what HTC had to say about their relationship with Microsoft. Apparently these new handsets, dubbed the 8X and the 8S, are going to be “flagship” Windows Phone 8 devices that will be co-marketed with Microsoft. What exactly does that mean for HTC’s relationship with Google?

Taking a step back for a second, let’s look at HTC as a whole. The company peaked in 2010 thanks to their stellar portfolio of Android devices. When Samsung announced the Galaxy S II in February 2011, that’s when things started going to, pardon our French, complete and utter shit. HTC’s flagship device that year, the Sensation, failed to impress anyone. The company had to cut their sales forecast in November of last year, citing increased competition. When HTC announced the One X in February 2012, people sure liked it, but then again everyone wanted to see the Galaxy S III first before buying a new smartphone. That response dragged sales down even further. Let’s also not forget the sales ban thanks to Apple.

Back to Windows Phone, is HTC looking to cozy up with Microsoft because they need money? In case you haven’t heard, Microsoft gives Nokia $250 million every quarter to stay alive. Could HTC be looking for a similar type of deal? We don’t have access to that information, we’re just speculating out loud.

HTC’s problems, when you really stop and think about it, stem from the fact that they don’t actually make anything. They buy components from various companies, pay another company to put them together, and then sell those fully assembled products to consumers. They’ll never get the type of margins that Samsung gets because Samsung actually makes their own screens, their own processors, their own memory chips, and so and so forth.

We certainly hope HTC doesn’t bet the farm on Windows Phone, like Nokia did, but at the same time we wouldn’t be surprised to see that actually happen.

Rhapsody Updated In The Play Store – Now Allows For Album Downloads For Offline Playback

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 06:55 PM PDT

This image has no alt text

Rhapsody, the all-you-can-eat music streaming service has just seen an updated version hit the Play Store and it comes with a few new goodies. To start off, there’s the new ability to download individual albums and music tracks to your phone’s storage for when your network connection is less than ideal. Users can actually decide where they can store the offline tracks — whether it be the removable SD card, or internal storage. Options are good.

As a refresher for those that haven’t used the app in awhile, the previous update increased playback streaming by 30%. Still, the app still has some work ahead of it. There are some features like artist bios available in the web version of Rhapsody, but missing from the Android app. You can download Rhapsody for free from the Google Play Store, but a trial or subscription is required for music playback. If you haven’t signed up, Rhapsody is still having a summer sale where the normal $10 a month unlimited streaming service can be had for only $5 for the first 3 months.

Facebook Adds New Auto Upload Feature For Some Android Users

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 06:11 PM PDT

This image has no alt text

Facebook is rolling out a new feature to some of their Android users today which gives the app the ability to auto upload photos to the social network ala Google+. Photo’s wont immediately hit your timeline, instead, they’ll be marked private until you manually go in and make them public on your profile. Again, this feature isn’t enabled for everyone just yet (checked for myself and it’s a no-go), but if you’d like to enable syncing from your Android device, you can follow these simple steps.

To start syncing your photos, make sure you have the latest version of Facebook for Android installed on your phone.
From the app:

  • Go to your timeline
  • Tap Photos
  • Tap Sync at the bottom of your photos section. Follow the step-by-step instructions.
From your computer:

  • Go to your timeline
  • Click Photos
  • Click Synced From Phone at the top of your photos section. Follow the step-by-step instructions.
You can choose how many photos you'd like to sync, and privately store up to 2GB of photos.

Now, if Facebook could maybe put new features on the back burner, while they iron out some of the bugs currently plaguing the app, I might actually start using it again.

Matias Duarte on Android’s UI: It’s Only About 33% Of Where I Want It To Be

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 05:14 PM PDT

This image has no alt text

Google’s Matias Duarte is more than just a snappy dresser, he’s also Google’s Senior Director of Android User Experience. Today, the man responsible for taking Android’s design out of the stone-age and into the brave new world of Holo UI, was congratulated on the official Android Google+ page after being recognized as one of Fast Company’s “50 Designers Shaping the Future.”

While most Google+ users were quick to send Matias their praise and congratulatory messages for all his hard work (pre-ICS, Android wasn’t exactly known for its beauty), the thread quickly became overrun by users who jumped on the opportunity to point out Android’s current design flaws. It’s true. Android isn’t totally “there” yet — anyone who spends a lot of time in OS can tell you that. This general feeling was also echoed by Matias who responded to design criticisms saying:

It’s true, we still have a lot of work to do. Personally I feel like I’ve gotten only about a third of the way to where I want to be with regards to consistency, responsiveness, and polish.

Better get back to work!

If you thought things were looking pretty polished already in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean despite uneven icons and general UI inconsistencies — there’s still a lot of work to be done but you can rest assured that Matias Duarte is on it.

Google Maps will now show your directions and places history from desktop

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 03:43 PM PDT

Google has announced some nice changes to Google Maps that will make it more convenient for people to locate their most frequently visited places. Google will bring up your directions and places search history from your desktop searches to autocomplete places you might be looking for on mobile.

This is a very much needed feature for yours truly, and I’m amazed it took to so long. You’ll need to be signed in to your Google account with web history enabled for this to work, but the process to do all that is quite fast and easy. Go ahead and try it on your phone, and get Google Maps from the Google Play Store if you don’t already have it (for shame). [Google]

Samsung Galaxy S3 AT&T update brings minor UI tweaks, bug fixes

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 02:00 PM PDT

A small update has hit the AT&T Galaxy S3 today, and don’t expect it to set the world ablaze. It’s an 82MB update that doesn’t look to change much at first glance, but there are a few changes to be had.

The settings menu has been reworked as the Kies Over WiFi setting has been moved to the bottom of “More Settings.” There also seems to be more effects in the camera app, a new VPN app, changes to the keyboard, and more.

There’s a bit of a “what doesn’t belong” game going on XDA right now where users are posting their findings of what’s new. Why don’t you join in on the fun and poke around to see what’s changed while we attempt to procure a changelog? You’re looking for build IMM76D.I747UCALH9. The other day we learned AT&T would be bringing 4G LTE to Birmingham and Memphis, but it looks like even more cities than that are set to get the high speed mobile data network.

Portland, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Detroit, Sacramento, and  Honolulu  are all good to go for fast consumption of data. You’ll need a 4G-capable smartphone, tablet, or hotspot, of course, but you probably wouldn’t be reading this site if you didn’t already have one of the three. Let us know if you’re seeing any of these cities light up.

LG to bring Optimus G to United States Q4, posts 6 minute tour [VIDEO]

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 11:51 AM PDT

The LG Optimus G was shown off in the United States recently, and with its showing stateside naturally comes news of when it will arrive. LG has mentioned that the device will be here Q4 of this year.

With that, they’ve also posted a new 6 minute video tour of the device for those of us who want to see LG’s new Optimus UI before playing with one themselves.

The phone’s beast-like specs turned more than a few heads in the mobile space, but it’ll be the user interface, software support, and bugs that’ll determine whether or not the Optimus G will be the attractive device we’re hoping it will be. Watch the video above.

Samsung releases new “Next Best Thing” ad for Galaxy S3, makes fun of “innovative” iPhone 5 [VIDEO]

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 09:56 AM PDT

Samsung has just released a new 90 second ad spot for the Samsung Galaxy S3, and it takes us back to the build-up to the Galaxy S3′s launch. Yep, that’s right — it’s a new “next best thing” ad, and this time all the Apple fans waiting in line for the iPhone 5 are teeming with anguish over the fact that it’s already bested by the Samsung Galaxy S3.

They look on in awe as friends instantly share photos, “bump” phones to share playlists using NFC, and speak of the wizardry that involves being able to watch a video and send a text at the same time.

The actors/actresses in this spot were so good that I felt genuinely sorry for the guy who hopelessly wondered if the next version of the iPhone would be getting some of those features before the iPhone 5 is even out. Get your eyes on the video above.

HTC splits mobile eggs between Android, Windows Phone 8 with HTC 8X and 8S announcements

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 09:37 AM PDT

Our WinSource team is live in New York City where HTC gathered the press and mobile industry to announce the HTC 8X and 8S. “But what happened to 2-7,” you ask. I’ll admit it — I wasn’t sure what HTC would do after “One” either, but note that these names likely allude to the fact that these will be Windows Phone 8 devices.

What you’re getting are some of the best looking phones over in that side of the mobile game. The 8X features 4.3 inch HD display, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, NFC, an 8 megapixel HD camera, and more.

Meanwhile, the 8S is sporting a 4 inch WVGA display, a 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, and 4GB of internal storage. This one’s not exactly setting the world on fire, of course, but it should be presented as a budget option for those new to the smartphone game.

Like Samsung, HTC is starting to get serious about other mainstream operating systems. They, also like Samsung, have had great history with Microsoft and its mobile operating system.

With Android doing so well it’s easy to forget that these OEMs don’t pay allegiance to whatever gets them the most money. It’s unwise to spread yourself thin in the mobile space, and with this new series of Windows Phone products HTC will find themselves having to balance the best of both worlds.

Should we expect less focus on Android? Of course not. It’s still HTC’s bread maker, and even if Windows Phone skyrockets over the course of the next one or two years they will no doubt allow the two to coexist in the same portfolio.

And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Let’s just hope HTC’s readying a bevy of new, interesting next-generation Android devices to be shown off early next year. [via WinSource]

Verizon Wireless, Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, US Cellular announce plans to sell Galaxy Note 2

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 08:26 AM PDT

Those of you waiting for the Galaxy Note in the US can look forward to some good news this morning. Samsung and all 5 major carriers have announced plans to carry the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. By now, you know that carrier list includes T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, and US Cellular.

While none of the carriers are willing to offer a hard date for availability just yet, we do have some general windows. Don’t be shocked that all of those windows are “Fall 2012″ as we’re sure most of these guys are trying to get their wares out right before the busy holiday shopping season.

We do have pricing info for at least one carrier, though. US Cellular will be offering a 16GB version in Titanium Gray for $300, and theirs is slated for late October. Others haven’t announced anything other than they’ll be getting it, though, so we’ll have to wait for further information from each respective carrier.

Now that you know you’ll be able to get the device on virtually every carrier in the US, the question remains — are you buying one? It’s the new kid on the block, and while the Samsung Galaxy S3  is still a great device the Galaxy Note has all the tools to trump it. Sound off in the comments below, and read on for full press details.

Samsung Mobile Introducing Galaxy Note® II in Time for the Holidays with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and U.S. Cellular

Redesigned S Pen and apps, sharing capabilities and quad-core Exynos™ processor enhances productivity, creativity and performance

DALLAS — September 19, 2012 — Samsung Telecommunications America, LLC (Samsung Mobile) – the No.1 mobile phone provider in the United States1 – will launch the Galaxy Note® II in the U.S. with five major carriers by mid-November. Exact pricing and retail availability will be announced by each of the carriers.

Optimized for the fastest 4G LTE* and HSPA+ 42 networks, the Galaxy Note II combines some of the best capabilities of the Galaxy S® III with an enhanced S Pen and new S Pen apps, the processing power to multitask like a PC, with a larger screen yet in a thinner, lighter form factor. The Galaxy Note II enables consumers that want a larger format device to create, collaborate and now share original content faster and easier than before.

"The original Galaxy Note® created a new category of smartphones by combining the best of a smartphone with the best of a tablet. In less than a year, Samsung sold more than 10 million globally demonstrating the category is taking hold," said Dale Sohn, president of Samsung Telecommunications America. "The new Galaxy Note II is a significant leap forward for the category."

Power & Performance

Galaxy Note II marks the U.S. debut of Samsung's Exynos™ 1.6 GHz quad-core processor optimized for LTE networks. It has 2GB of internal RAM; and comes with 16 GB of onboard file storage and supports up to 64GB of additional memory with a microSD® card. Collectively, these deliver easy multitasking, lightning fast screen transitions, powerful browser performance and minimal app load time.

The Galaxy Note II is the first Samsung smartphone to launch with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which brings stunning graphical capabilities and an upgraded Google Now service, including new features such as contextual search. It is also a SAFE-designated device, which means it has additional security features to safe-guard sensitive data and communications.

The Galaxy Note II has a 5.5-inch HD Super AMOLED™ touchscreen with 16:9 aspect ratio, the standard for true HD video viewing, and comes with a 3,100 mAh battery, which is 24 percent larger than the original Galaxy Note.

Despite the much larger battery, the device weighs slightly less than the original Galaxy Note. As a result of a narrower bezel on all four sides of the screen, the screen is larger but the overall device is narrower. The Galaxy Note II is available in Marble White and Titanium Gray color options.

Create & Collaborate

At the heart of the Galaxy Note II and the ability to create and collaborate is the S Pen™, which has been ergonomically redesigned to provide a more precise and natural writing and drawing experience. The new S Pen can sense 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity, four times more than the original S Pen.

When the new S Pen is removed from the Galaxy Note II, it automatically launches the S Pen menu, which opens a new home screen that allows one-touch access to most used S-Pen applications. Keeping track of the S Pen is simple now too because a visual and audible alarm appears if the user forgets to put the S Pen back inside the device.

The S Pen's advanced features provide the ability to capture ideas, inspiration and information instantly, and to combine handwriting with any digital content directly on the screen, such as adding new calendar appointments by writing the event details directly on the day of the week, signing or adding handwritten notes to an email.

Selecting and cropping text, images or other content on the Galaxy Note II with the S Pen is very similar to a traditional "click-mouse" experience. When the S Pen's side button is pressed down, the S Pen recognizes that users want to clip or edit the selected content on the screen. Users can draw precise lines around the content to be cropped out, highlighted or copied into another application.

Key applications of the S Pen include:

  • ·         Easy Clip feature allows users to instantly outline and crop any content on the screen in any shape to save, share or paste. Once done cropping the image, users can freely edit the cropped content through coloring, shading, or their own personal handwriting.
  • ·         Quick Command uses the S Pen to quickly activate applications and services people use most often. The command pad appears with one upward swipe on the screen with the S Pen button pressed down. Users can send an email, make a call or search a location with pre-registered and customized S Pen stroke marks made on the command pad.
  • ·         Photo Notes allows users to create handwritten notes on the back of digital photos.
  • Air View allows users to hover with the S Pen over an email, calendar entry, image gallery or video to preview the content without having to open it or wait for screen transitions. This feature also enables users to preview Web site content without opening the full site. Air View provides a title description for unrecognizable icons in various applications.
  • Idea Sketch allows users to easily add illustrations by handwriting keywords on the S Note. It provides illustration images that match the handwritten keywords. It's a fancy illustration match function that will allow users to express, organize and visualize ideas in a more innovative and creative way. Users can even customize and add in their own illustrations library.

Multitask & Share

The Galaxy Note II takes multitasking to the next level by enabling consumers to launch multiple windows on one screen, including high definition video. Multitasking features include:

  • ·         Popup Note lets users open an S Note instantly as a pop-up window to jot down a quick note during a phone call, checking email or watching a video.
  • ·         Popup Video extends the concept of 'Popup Play.' While watching a video, with the touch of a button, the video will become a floating window on the display. The video will continue to play and it can be re-sized or repositioned to any part of the GALAXY Note II's screen. This versatility means that users are free to load other applications beneath it to browse online or work in other apps such as email, calendar or text messaging.
  • ·         Popup Browser launches a new browser window when a user clicks on a link embedded in an email.

The Galaxy Note II contains many of the popular, real-life content sharing features introduced in June on the Samsung Galaxy S™ III including:

  • ·         S Beam – Tap back of Galaxy Note II against another S-Beam-enabled device to share large video files, documents or S Notes in seconds without using data service.
  • ·         Share Shot - Seamlessly share pictures taken with Galaxy Note II's 8 megapixel camera to other phones from up to 200 feet away.
  • ·         Burst Shot/Best Shot – Capture rapid-fire still pictures with zero shutter lag; choose picture with optimal colors, lighting and clarity from Best Shot image recommendations.
  • ·         AllShare Cast™ and GroupCast™ have been expanded on the Galaxy Note II. Share premium video content, mobile games and movies and TV shows from Samsung Media Hub wirelessly with Samsung Smart TVs, laptops, tablets and other consumer electronics.

Customize & Accessorize

  • ·         Protective Flip Cover – Samsung's unique flip cover enhances the look of the Galaxy Note II with a premium leather front and glossy backing, while providing privacy and protection. The Protective Flip Cover comes in seven vibrant colors to customize the Galaxy Note II, including Titanium Gray, Marble White, Blue, Pink, Mint, Lime Green, and Orange.
  • ·         S Pen with Eraser – This ergonomic, full-featured S Pen features a button for gestures and an eraser tip for easy corrections. This updated version of Samsung's original S Pen truly mimics the feel of a pen or pencil.

LG Optimus Nexus Rumors Are What Android Dreams Are Made Of

We’ve reached the wee night hours here at Phandroid, and what better time than right now to fill you guys in on some juicy Android rumors before you hit the sack. Turns out our friends at Android and Me have been hearing rumblings from a few inside sources that the next Google Nexus device could be the spec’d out beast re-announced just last night — the LG Optimus G. Just imagine it: the LG Optimus Nexus with a quad-core Qualcomm S4 processor, industry leading 720p True HD IPS Plus display, 2GB of multitasking RAM, 32GB of spacious internal storage, 13MP camera, NFC, LTE, and if this rumor comes to pass — stock Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. You hear that? That’s the sound of Android fanboys around the world collectively wetting themselves (don’t worry, me too).

Admittedly, there isn’t much info to go on and this is nothing more than a good old fashioned industry rumor. But let’s not forget a leak not too long ago possibly revealing Samsung, LG and Sony’s intentions on releasing their own Nexus devices due out by this Thanksgiving. Just take one more look at the above image and tell me that doesn’t bring a tear to your eye?

T-Mobile’s Magenta Deal Days Offers Galaxy S3 Among Others for No Money Down (Sorta) – Starts Sept 21st

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 12:12 AM PDT

Starting Sept 21st all the way through the 30th, T-Mobile is throwing an interesting promotion for new and existing customers on their network. They’re calling it their “Magenta Deal Days” and they’re offering up some of the hottest smartphones currently available for free — but there’s a catch. Customers wont have to put any money down on a new smartphone (choose the Galaxy S3, or hand in your Android-card), instead opting for monthly installment payments around $15-$20, on top of their monthly bill. To help break it down for ya, here’s a handy chart:

Okay, so you will have to put some money down but after the mail-in rebate, it’ll bring that initial payment down to zero. Kinda zero down, kinda not. The promo is good for anyone buying a T-Mobile phone new (or with an upgrade), along with T-Mo’s truly Unlimited Value plan. But that’s the last caveat, we promise. Full press release below.

T-Mobile Helps Customers Fall Into Savings

From Sept. 21–30, get any device, including the Samsung Galaxy S® III, for $0.00 down

BELLEVUE, Wash. — Sept. 18, 2012 — Prices are falling at T-Mobile® this September during the "Magenta Deal Days" Zero Down promotion, making staying in touch more affordable than ever. Starting Sept. 21, customers can purchase any device, including the Samsung Galaxy S® III, for $0.00 down payment on qualifying Unlimited ValueTM and Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data plans after mail-in rebate card.

"Our customers continue to appreciate our 'Magenta Deal Days' offerings because they showcase our commitment to giving all our customers the best 4G experiences," said Andrew Sherrard, senior vice president of marketing, T-Mobile USA. "With back to school in full swing, we're glad to offer another great deal to keep families in touch."

The Samsung Galaxy S III is one of T-Mobile's fastest 4G (HSPA+ 42 technology) smartphones. With an intuitive design, the Galaxy S III enables customers to effortlessly share photos, videos and more to a compatible TV or other Galaxy S III devices. Featuring a beautiful 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED™ screen, the Galaxy S III packs a powerful entertainment experience, which allows customers to watch HD movies and TV shows, download apps, and securely browse the Web.

New customers will be eligible for this deal when they sign a two-year agreement on any qualifying Unlimited Value and Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data plan (Unlimited, 5GB or 10GB). Existing customers also can take advantage of this offer.1
