Developer constructs Granny Smith arcade machine in preparation for official launch party

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 04:46 PM PDT

In celebration of the launch of Granny Smith for Android, Mediocre Games has constructed the ultimate apple collecting machine. With some left over wood lying around, a carpentry wizard managed to build a fully-functioning Granny Smith emulator, complete with actual physical buttons.

The game is run via an ASUS Transformer TF300T, with Zeemote wireless joysticks acting as the main form of interaction. The entire process is fairly in-depth, but the result is a one of a kind piece of Android gaming heaven. For a full walkthrough, be sure to hit the source link below.

Apple fans flood Samsung’s Facebook page

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 04:43 PM PDT

Social media is great tool for reaching out to your fans and getting conversations going about your products. On September 6, Samsung asked their fans via their Facebook page “If you could only take one electronic device on to a deserted island, what would it be?” Samsung was probably expecting an internal war between the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note II, but Apple fans crashed the party.

In recent days the post has been flooded with comments about the iPhone 5 and iPad. At one point iPhone was mentioned 3,637 of the last 5,000 posts, and Samsung and Galaxy was only mentioned 473 and 378 times respectively. So Apple fans are showing up in large numbers to put a smudge on what should have been a simple Samsung friendly best phone discussion. Apple fans took it as a time to say, “Hey, we like our phones more than yours.” Clearly this tactic backfired on Samsung, but I am sure they have higher hopes for their new commercial showcasing the Galaxy S III, rather than Facebook fans debating over it. If you want to help out the Samsung cause in this war, then click the link below.

Apple Airplay competitor Miracast to be adopted by the LG Optimus G and Samsung Galaxy S III

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 11:21 AM PDT

A new era in streaming between devices may be upon us. Miracast is similar to DLNA and Apple’s Airplay in that it allows a person to stream a video or other images straight from a phone or tablet to a TV or projector. Miracast differs itself by giving the option to stream without needing WiFi because it can utilize WiFi direct. It can also automatically negotiating the best audio and video resolution.

The first phones with Mircast certification will be the LG Optimus G and the Samsung Galaxy III with more to come shortly. So far the only TV with certification is the Samsung Echo-P Series TV. You can use the Miracast feature with any WiDi-enabled displays. Hit the break for a Mircast video.

Samsung unleashes the Galaxy S III edition of the “The Next Big Thing is Already Here” commercial

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 10:22 AM PDT

If you remember, last year Samsung started the “The Next Big Thing is Already Here” campaign shortly after the iPhone 4S was released. With the iPhone 5 about to hit stores, it’s no surprise that Samsung is at it again. This time it’s the Galaxy S III edition. In this 90 second spot, we see numerous iPhone fanboys and fangirls waiting ever so patiently in Chicago, San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles for their new iPhone. Of course the Galaxy S III crashes the party and the iSheep get a quick glimpse of S Beam and Share Shot, two features the iPhone 5 doesn’t have. As far as the conversations, Samsung reflected comments throughout culture and the media.

This commercial will air tonight during  "The Voice" on NBC and "The X-Factor" on Fox. Hit the break to see it.

US Cellular will release the Samsung Galaxy Note II in late October for $299, pre-orders already started

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 09:23 AM PDT

US Cellular just announced that the Samsung Galaxy Note II is available for pre-order on their website. The behemoth of a phone is currently $299.99 after an instant online rebate. If you want to wait until it hits stores, the phablet is currently scheduled for a late October release, but the rebate will be mail-in. So far USCC is only offering the 16gb Titanium Grey flavor for pre-order, but for those who were fans of the original Note, this shouldn’t be much of a problem.

The phone, which sports a massive 5.5-inch Super-AMOLED HD display as well as Samsung’s super powered 1.6 GHz quad-core Exynos processor is the first phone outside of Korea to sport both 4G LTE connectivity and a quad-core processor. By offering this in addition to Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S3, USCC is presenting themselves to be a strong competitor in the smartphone market.

Successor to Samsung Galaxy S III may be powered by Cortex-A15 processor

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 09:08 AM PDT

Amidst the rumors of Samsung working on the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S III and subsequent denials, one thing is certain. Somewhere in Samsung's organization, work is underway on Samsung's next flagship device. Could it be a device codenamed "Samsung TE4?" Some sources seem to think so after a device by that name was discovered by Rightware featuring some unique hardware.

According to the information found by Rightware, the Samsung TE4 is powered by the Exynos 5 Dual processor, which mates a 1.7 GHz dual-core Cortex-A15 cpu with a Mali-T604 gpu. We have been waiting for Samsung to announce a device that will use this combination, but it does not look like anything will hit the market in 2012. Given that this mysterious Samsung TE4 device is being benchmarked, could it be on track for a 2013 release? If so, will it be the next top of the line device to be released by Samsung?

No changelog was released, but you should notice a new brightness slider in your notification dropdown. We’re also hearing of some VPN and enterprise security enhancements.

LG’s Optimus G coming to the U.S. in the 4th quarter [Video]

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 08:38 AM PDT

LG held a press event this morning in New York to show off the Optimus G after officially unveiling it yesterday in South Korea. The U.S. version will sport the same Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro, 2GB of RAM, 13MP camera, and the gorgeuous 4.7-inch (1280 x 768) True HD IPS display. We do expect it to be called the Eclipse on Sprint and possibly AT&T, but no information was given other than to expect to see it in the 4th quarter. Hit the break for the hands on video from LG.

BBC Media Player Now Available In The Play Store

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 07:47 AM PDT

Now that Flash is no longer supported on Android devices, media companies of all have had to come up with creative ways of sharing content with the masses. Famed British media company BBC is no different and has launched its BBC Media Player app for Android devices. The app allows BBC fans to steam video and audio at their heart’s content, though BBC is still trying to integrate its main website with the new app, so some features or stories may not be available for hopefully a short time.

The app is available for Froyo 2.2+ devices in the UK, though there are early reports the app is not compatible with some Jelly Bean devices. Hopefully BBC will get those kinks worked out sooner than later.

ITC All Set To Investigate Motorola’s Patent Claims Against Apple

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 07:09 AM PDT

Looks like we’ve got ourselves a follow-up to Motorola going on the attack against the boys from Cupertino. After previously seeing Motorola file its initial complaint to the International Trade Commission (ITC) against Apple, the ITC is now beginning its formal investigation into the complaint and Motorola’s claims. While the suit would not affect the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S or iPad with 4G LTE, the overall hope for Motorola is this: the ITC recognizing the patents involved in Motorola’s claims aren't standard-essential ones. What this means is Googlorola would actually have a slim chance to see the ITC grant an import ban of some sort courtesy of the ITC.

You can bet that after seeing what happened to Samsung last month and Motorola’s full arsenal of 17,000 patents, Google will certainly not sit idle and quiet moving forward when it comes to anything threatening its ecosystem. But then again, this ever-growing spat between MOTO and Apple will be far from over. You can count on that.
