Nexus 7 (2013): Factory Image available for download
Aug 12th 2013, 17:32, by Sterling Keys

Over the past week, the new Nexus 7 has been a pretty hot topic in the tech press due to the lack of factory images available for the device. Most of the heat fell upon Qualcomm, citing that their resistance behind releasing such information was the cause for delay.

North Korea builds smartphone with "indigenous technology," runs Android
Aug 12th 2013, 18:00, by Dima Aryeh

North Korea has many problems, including poverty and restricted Internet access. The North Korean government has worked hard to keep smartphone technology out of the hands of its people; North Koreans have had to illegally import technology from China if they wished to own a smartphone. Now, North Korea will release its own smartphone, created for the North Korean people. This smartphone called the AS1201 Arirang, after a folk song, is designed to be more accessible, because of both affordability and government approval.

Though the device is claimed to have been built with “indigenous technology,” the photos clearly show it running a stock build of Android. That’s American technology at its finest, so we don’t know what they’re talking about. It also looks like their reports that the device is being built inside a North Korean factory may be false, as the factory Kim Jong Un visited showed no signs of manufacturing. It is speculated that the devices come from China and are just packaged in that factory.

The Korean Central News Agency (which is state run) reports that the device will be in high demand, but a press release with specifications has not been released. We’ll report back when we know what kind of sick processor this beast uses. Would you feel safe using a North Korean phone?

LG launches balloons with G2 vouchers, 20 people hurt by BB guns
Aug 12th 2013, 17:07, by Dima Aryeh

LG wanted to launch the new G2 with a fun event where people could get a free device. So, the company attached vouchers for free devices to helium balloons and let them go into the air. LG probably expected people to go on a hunt for vouchers once the balloons lost enough gas to drop. However, that isn’t quite how things turned out.

Some brought BB guns to the event in hopes of shooting down the balloons. But as you can imagine, BB guns in a competitive event is never a good idea. In the end, 20 people were shot with BB guns, so LG cancelled all future similar events.

And though this wasn’t at all LG’s fault (except for a lack of critical thinking), the company will cover the medical expenses for those who were hurt. That’s good of LG, and we’re glad to see it handle the situation well. It’s just sad that an event had to go so wrong. But hey, at least real guns weren’t involved. What would you do for a free LG G2?

Robert Downey Jr appears in HTC Change teaser spot called 'The Arrival'
Aug 12th 2013, 14:21, by Robert Nazarian

HTC_Change_Subversive_Thinking_Has_Arrived

A few days ago, HTC tweeted that “Subversive thinking has arrived” along with the image above. Today they released a short teaser video showcasing Robert Downey Jr. In it, the same subversive line was used along with some possibilities of what HTC might stand for. If you remember, HTC launched the HTC Generator site last week, which generates different meanings for H-T-C upon each click of the mouse.

The below spot is only the tip of the iceberg. HTC plans on spending close to $1 billion promoting the HTC brand and will utilize Robert Downey Jr every step of the way. Word is that a full commercial spot will be revealed later this week on August 15. For now check out this 15 second teaser after the break.

LG G2 promotional event in Seoul gets ugly after 'whose bright idea was that' stunt
Aug 12th 2013, 14:55, by Robert Nazarian

LG_G2_Balloon_Event_Seoul_Word_War_G

LG made a splash last Thursday with the unveiling of the G2 in NYC, but things got a little ugly by Friday. LG held an event in Seoul promoting their new flagship and things got a little out of hand when they launched 100 balloons. Dubbed “G in the cloud”, each balloon had a certificate good for one free G2. Not a bad deal whatsoever. Unfortunately, fans started shooting at the balloons with BB guns in order to get the certificates. "Some were using BB guns to shoot the balloons. As far as I know, there were only some 20 security guards. LG should have placed more security personnel as the event was already promoted via social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and leading local portals. Some of the injured were hospitalized," a blogger wrote.

The result was that 20 people were injured and LG cancelled similar events they had planned across the nation. "We canceled events offering free G2 smartphones that had been scheduled in major cities nationwide, including Busan, due to safety concerns," the firm said in a statement. We have no idea how serious these injuries were, but LG did say they would cover all medical costs for those suffered. The following news spot from Korea shows some of the highlights from the event. They compare the event to the movie “World War Z”, and call this one “World War G”

Galaxy Note III could sport a 3,450mAh battery
Aug 12th 2013, 15:22, by Robert Nazarian

Samsung_Battery_From_Galaxy_S_III

As we get closer to the September 4th introduction of the Galaxy Note III, more and more details are starting to surface. We already got confirmation that it will launch with Android 4.3, but what about the battery? It has to be bigger than the Note II right? Rumor has it with a 3,450mAh battery, which is pretty hefty and larger than the Note II’s 3,100mAh battery.

I do have to point out that the new DROID MAXX will have a 3,500mAh battery and is a smaller phone. On the other hand, its battery isn’t removable. Still. don’t expect 48 hours battery life with the Galaxy Note III since it features a larger 1080p display and a quad-core CPU.

Build your own Chromecast receiver with Cheapcast app and an Android device
Aug 12th 2013, 16:45, by Jeff Causey

If you have been itching to give Chromecast a try, but have been thwarted by the backlog for delivery or you just don’t want to spring for the $35 to buy one, a new alternative may be available for you. XDA Developer Maui has developed a fee app called CheapCast that emulates the ChromeCast dongle. The app results in the device it is loaded on to function as the target, just like the ChromeCast does. Users can even change the name of the device. If you have some extra hardware laying around that supports HDMI out, you should be able to hook it up to your TV and let the streaming fun begin.

The app is still in a beta stage, so there could very well be some glitches. Also, support for Tab Casting, the ability to stream the contents of a tab in the Chrome browser, is not yet supported.  However, all other ChromeCast-enabled applications like YouTube, Google Movies & TV, and Netflix should work.

You can check out the proof of concept and an alpha testing video below along with some screenshots. If you want to give it a try, hit one of the download links to grab CheapCast from the Google Play store.

Best Android apps for medical emergencies, patient care, and First Aid information [August 2013]
Aug 12th 2013, 15:27, by Harrison Kaminsky

Medical Apps

Whether you have a personal medical emergency, need to get information to help a patient or you just want to brush up on your human anatomy before an exam, there are hundreds of Android applications that will help you with whatever you may need. We’ve compiled a list of the top medical apps available in the Google Play Store that will certainly make your life more efficient and your device more useful in your everyday life or profession. Hit the break to get started.

MedHelper Pro

1. Med Helper Pill Reminder: One app that has gotten its share of rave reviews is Med Helper Pill Reminder which reminds you via alarm when you need to take medications, when doctors appointments are scheduled, and when medications are running low or are about to expire. The app will also track your vitals and PRN. All information gathered by the app is logged and can easily be exported to your doctor, nurse or caregiver. The app has the ability to have multiple profiles, so if you are taking care of more than one person, the app can manage them all! This truly is one of the most useful apps I've ever seen in the Play Store, and certainly one of the only ones I've ever seen that can actually help save someone's life and physical well-being. Here is a list of features given by Med Helper that are all included in the application.

  • Prescription List: Name, Medication Alias, RX Number, Instructions, Reason, Description, Side Effects
  • Schedule: Start Date, End Date, Schedule Pattern, Reminder Times, Alarm, Snooze, Taken At
  • Inventory: Refills Remaining, Current Inventory, Expiration Date
  • Contact: Doctor, Pharmacy
  • Daily Schedule: Time of Day, Dosage, Calendar View
  • Take as Needed (PRN): Amount Taken, Time Taken, Last 10 Doses / 24 hr
  • Med Log: Daily View, Calendar View, Able to Manage
  • Vitals Tracked: Part of Day, Exercise, Temperature, Weight, Pulse, Glucose, HbA1c, Pain Levels, Blood Pressure, Oxygen
  • Exportable Reports

The functionality of this app seems endless… Its sweet holo UI and simple navigability make it all the more easy and enjoyable to use. Definitely grab this app if you think you can take advantage of anything is has to offer.

MedScape

2. Medscape: Medscape may be the most professional medical application in the Play Store, as it serves physicians, med-students, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, providing as much clinical information that you'll ever need from an app. However, one of the most redeeming qualities of this app is that although it may be most helpful to medical professionals, pretty much anyone can find a great amount of use for it. Users can select the specialties that they want to follow, and are given news in 34 different areas, updated daily. Medscape also has a built-in MEDLINE database which includes safety/prescription information for over 8,000 brand and generic drugs, OTC drugs, herbals and supplements. Probably the neatest part is that there is a "drug interaction checker," which lets you input up to 30 drugs at once and see the interactions that take place, so you can make sure that you're not causing any harmful chemical reactions in your (or your patient's) body.

Medscape has over 4,000 evidence-based articles written by leading physician experts, over 600 instructional procedure videos, and over 100 tables and protocols. The different categories for all of these features include pathophysiology, epidemiology, differential diagnoses, workup, treatment, medication options and more. The app also has medical calculators which let users check 129 medical formulas, scales and classifications in both US and SI units. Formulas, detailed notes and references are included in each result.

It's pretty clear that this application covers everything a doctor might need to help out a patient, or just to learn some new information about their field. We definitely recommend this app!

First Aid

3. First Aid: Here it comes, the ultimate "Mommy-app," brought to you by none other than the American Red Cross. Scraped knee? Check the First Aid app. Sore throat? Check the first aid app. Nausea? Check the first aid app. The American Red Cross has truly put together a phenomenal database of step-by-step instructional guides for everyday first-aid scenarios, complete with preparation information, and 9-1-1 integration so you can call EMS from the app at any time. (Just keep it away from your kids!) The application provides safety tips for everything, from severe winter weather to hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, etc. You won't be left in the dark during any emergency as the First Aid app will help prepare you for all kinds of problems. No internet connection during an emergency? No problem— the app comes pre-loaded with its information so you can access the data without problems at any time, anywhere. If you really want to get into it, the app also features interactive quizzes that let you share your results so you can show off your life-saving knowledge to your friends. First Aid is a wonderful tool that can definitely come in handy when you least expect it. Definitely grab this app— you never know when something will happen!

Anatronica

4. Anatomy 3D- Anatronica: Apps made for tablets usually have an overall better experience than most, likely due to the amount of work put into them that optimize performance, and the the look, feel, and functionality of the app. This claim certainly holds true for "Anatomy 3D- Anatronica," which packs a definite "wow-factor." The app presents itself as an educational guide for those seeking to learn more about human anatomy and the body systems, and features an interactive 3D touch interface with built-in information from Wikipedia and Gray's Anatomy textbook. The application has a fast search function, and both male and female detailed models. The developers also offer a Pro version of the app which runs for $6.99, which is ad-free, and priority bug-fixes. A bit expensive, but it's always nice to support the developers.

5. Epocrates: Another great app for physicians is Epocrates, which has over 1 million members, and claims that about "50% of all U.S. physicians rely on its services to enable better patient care by delivering the right information, right when it's needed."  This app is a little more lightweight than Medscape, but nonetheless still an essential application for medical professionals. But like Medscape, it can be used by pretty much anyone and has some really valuable information that most will find useful. Epocrates gives users the ability to review drug prescribing and safety information for thousands of brand/generic and OTC drugs, check for potentially harmful drug-t0-drug interactions for up to 30 drugs at a time (like Medscape), and identify pills by imprint code and physical characteristics. Epocrates also allows users to select national and regional healthcare insurance formularies for drug coverage information on the go. BMI and GFR calculators are built-in as well, and there is up-to-the-minute medical news and research information. The many uses of this app make this a valuable resource for every healthcare professional that simply can't be passed up… and it's free!
