HTC One Max review

HTC One Max

Does the world need a 5.9-inch HTC One?

We like the HTC One. Twice this year we’ve said it was the best Android phone you can buy, and there’s a strong argument for saying that’s still the case today. When it arrived back in March, the HTC One bucked some of the major high-end smartphone trends of the time. A metal shell, not plastic. A quirky two-button setup. A 4-megapixel camera that focused on pixel size, not megapixel count. And a screen no larger than its predecessor, at 4.7-inches, in a world of rapidly ballooning display sizes.

Nevertheless, big phones are, and look set to remain, a thing. The success of the Samsung Galaxy Note series has inspired competitors to have a crack at their own unashamedly large smartphones. This year we’ve seen the Optimus G Pro from LG, the Xperia Z Ultra from Sony and even the Ascend Mate from Huawei. It was only a matter of time before HTC arrived — fashionably late, of course — at the oversized smartphone party.

It’s easy to look at the One Max and assume you’re just dealing with a bigger HTC One. That’s not untrue, but there’s more going on than a mere expansion of an existing phone into a new form factor — and that’s both good and bad. The Max delivers some subtle differences in design and build, a fingerprint sensor around the back, expandable storage and an array of new software tricks thanks to HTC’s new Sense 5.5.

But does the world need a 5.9-inch HTC One? And what of the competition from the likes of Samsung, which has just launched its Galaxy Note 3 amid much fanfare. Let’s find out after the break, as we take an in-depth look at the new HTC One Max.

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean arrives soon for Samsung Galaxy S4 but you can download it now
Oct 14th 2013, 16:44, by Scott Webster

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is expected to see its Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update in the next few weeks. Rumored for the last few months, the build is just about ready for primetime. So much so, in fact, that SamMobile has already offering links to the download.

Should you want to get your hands on the early build you’ll want to proceed with caution. First, and foremost, you’ll need to use the GT-I9505 Samsung Galaxy S4. Also, note that you’ll wipe your device and you should back everything up ahead of times.

Indeed, the instructions can look daunting to the rookie and untested user. Our advice to you is just wait a few more weeks until the various models get the update. Cross your fingers, hold your breath, and knock on wood – you’ll be at the mercy of your carriers.

You may not be familiar with the Oppo brand name, but you should be. The up-and-coming Chinese phone manufacturer made a lot of waves late last year when it first introduced its 1080p-touting Find 5 handset. More recently, Oppo has been working hard to promote its latest effort, the Oppo N1, which offers a unique rotating camera and a rear touchpad.

The N1 not only has some cool (though border-line gimmicky) hardware features, but it also has reasonably high-end specs including a Snapdragon 600 CPU and 2GB of RAM. The handset is currently priced at CNY3,498, which is roughly equal to $571.

Interested in seeing what Oppo has to offer, but not willing to shell out close to $600 to try it out? If you’re lucky, you may have the opportunity to get your hands on the Oppo N1 ahead of the international launch, for just $99 outright.

What's the catch here? This promotion is all part of a new "Oppo Pioneer program". Under the terms of the program, users who get the phone for $99 will be asked to share their experiences with the handset on a weekly basis. No word on how many weeks this sharing will be required.

It is important to note that this is a very limited opportunity, as the promotion starts today and will end in just two weeks. Oppo will also only pick ten lucky applicants. In order to qualify for the offer, you'll need to send in an application detailing why you'd be a good choice for their special Pioneer program. This is somewhat similar to the Google Glass Explorers promotion that happened earlier this year, though in a much more limited capacity.

The Oppo Pioneer program is clearly an attempt to push forward the company’s international marketing efforts and generate additional hype for the handset. The promotion might be very limited in scope, but it's still worth sending in an application if you don't mind sharing your thoughts about the handset if you are lucky enough to be picked.

How about it, anyone interested in applying for the program? For more details, head over to Oppo's official English-language website.

Sprint officially announces plans to carry the HTC One Max; watch this first look video
Oct 14th 2013, 16:54, by Quentyn Kennemer

Earlier today, HTC announced the HTC One Max, the 5.9-inch fingerprint scanner-enabled smartphone that’s part of their 2013 flagship “One” lineup. We were wondering how long it would take for the first carrier to announce plans to sell the device, and it’s already happened. Sprint has chimed in to mention that they would be carrying the One Max at some point later this year.

Pricing and exact release date information couldn’t be had, but it’s always nice to know that the device is coming. We expect Verizon to announce plans to carry the device as well, as their version of it has been leaked in a couple of pictures prior to today’s announcement. Some have reported Verizon as confirmed, though we won’t be banking on that until we can get official word for ourselves.

AT&T and T-Mobile are still in the air, but history suggests they’ll likely be getting in on this phablet party, as well. We’ll be updating this post if any other carriers decide to announce official availability plans today. In the meantime, be sure to take a look at the “first look” video HTC put up on YouTube if you’re interesting in seeing this thing in action.

The launch and announcement of the HTC One Max has also brought along with it some information in regards to the latest version of HTC Sense, Android 4.3, and the HTC One. According to sources, the HTC One will see these updates approved for the device before the end of the month, with the HTC One Mini following shortly after with updates scheduled before the end of the year.

Is tomorrow the big day for Android 4.4?
Oct 14th 2013, 17:00, by Kris Carlon

You may remember that part of the AndroidPIT editorial team recently flew down to Google HQ in Hamburg to test out Google Glass, schmooze and generally poke their noses into what Google is up to. At the time, our own Stephan Serowy spoke to Stefan Keuchel, the spokesperson for Google Germany, and added him to his Google+ circles. Now Stefan has posted on his Google+ page that he is in San Francisco, can't sleep and has to be fit for tomorrow. So could tomorrow be the big unveiling of the Nexus 5, Android 4.4 KitKat and the Nexus 10?

US Cellular makes shared data plans official - and expensive
Oct 14th 2013, 16:33, by Jerry Hildenbrand

BYTES!

Personal plans can be shared by 10 users, business plans up to 25

US Cellular has made their shared data plans official. Much like AT&T and Verizon, users opting-in to the new plans will be able to purchase one large (relatively speaking) bucket of data and split it amongst users on the same account. The new plans are available to both standard consumer accounts as well as small-business accounts, and for some folks they probably make a lot of sense — especially on the small-business side.

The plans themselves are pretty pricey on the lower tiers, though. Starting at $40 for 300MB worth of shared data, and running the spectrum the whole way to $560 per month for 75GB, the plans will also require per device charges of $40 per smartphone, $30 for a "basic" phone, $20 for a modem or hotspot, and $10 for a tablet. These all give unlimited calls and messages. In addition, they are offering data-only plans for modems and tablets starting at a much more reasonable $10 for 1GB of data. There was no mention of forcing existing customers to switch to the new plans.

The full press release is after the break, and you can always visit US Cellular's site for all the dirty details.
