ARM Chromebooks now compatible with Google+ photo editor tools
Oct 26th 2013, 17:49, by Jerry Hildenbrand

HP 11 ARM Chromebook

The Snapseed-powered photo editing tools are now available for all of Google's Chromebooks

Users with the Samsung series 3 or HP Chromebook 11 now have access to the same Google+ photo editing tools that the rest of on the desktop and using other Chromebooks have been using. Brian Matiash, Community Manager for Google+ Photos, privately posted the following to the Google+ Photos page:

Just a heads up that we have pushed out an official fix adding support for our recently released Google+ Photos Editing Tools with ARM-based Chromebooks

The two most popular Chromebooks thus far have one thing in common — they both use an ARM processor instead of the usual Intel chip we see in laptops. There are advantages and disadvantages to this, but the important thing to remember is that programs that have direct contact with the hardware, like the photo editing tools in Google+, need to be built to be compatible with both.

As every critic of Google and Chrome will be quick to point out, Chromebooks don't have a lot in the way of installed software to choose from. They are cloud-based, and tools like photo editors are few and far between. They aren't just blowing smoke, either — the lack of programs to do intricate image or video editing are what keeps me attached to a Windows or Mac computer. For most folks, who don't have to spend part of every day processing pictures or video, something like the Google+ photo editing tools are probably good enough. It's great to see them come to the Chromebooks that are selling.

Does bowling ball tweet hint at October 28 KitKat launch?
Oct 26th 2013, 18:04, by Aditya Thawardas

android_kitkatThe Android community is going crazy trying to predict when KitKat will launch, and KitKat is having some fun with it. They have sent out numerous vague tweets and photos that have gotten people going mad trying to predict a release date. The latest tweet is a photo of a bowling ball with seven Kit Kat shaped pins, with overlaying text saying “Have a break, Have a Kit Kat.” A bowling ball has three pins, meaning that Kit Kat will launch in three days, right?? At least, that’s what some people think.

The said tweet was sent out yesterday, so we’ll wait anxiously to see if anything Kit Kat tweets today hints at two days remaining for a launch. Stay tuned.

OUYA game console will soon be shipping with updated controller
Oct 26th 2013, 14:57, by Robert Nelson

Earlier in the week we learned the OUYA game console was going to be getting a bigger retail push in the US market. At the time there was mention of how the system would be heading to all 1,800 retail locations. And as part of that push, the packaging was going to be reworked to highlight and promote games and other content. Well, it looks like the outer package is not going to be the only thing changing with OUYA.

20130717_123720-540x405

Coming by way of Polygon, OUYA founder Julie Uhrman recently spoke about some updated game controllers. There was mention about how the OUYA team wants to “build a great controller” and about how the “feel of the controller today is actually probably a lot better then in June.” To that point, Uhrman also mentioned how they are “constantly going to work and iterate on the controller.”

Taking that a step further, and it appears the system will soon see another iteration on the controller. The catch with this, you will not know which controller you have until you open the box. This isn’t a case where there is a particular issue with the current controller, so the existing models are going to continue being sold. In fact, in speaking about the new controllers, Uhrman herself even mentioned that “you wouldn’t know until you bought it.”

Otherwise, while the controller is being iterated with the OUYA, there has been some issues in the past. There seems to have been some issues with the thumbsticks and action buttons and for that, OUYA will replace the controller should you have issues. Hardware aside, the other issue was the latency and connection. That also is being worked on with software updates and should also have been improved over time.

Bottom line here, in addition to maybe seeing some new packaging that brings more focus to games and other content, you may be lucky enough to open the box up and have a slightly newer controller.

Moto Maker kiosk spotted in Best Buy
Oct 26th 2013, 14:09, by Robert Nelson

Prices began dropping for the Moto X yesterday. This price cut doesn’t seem to have spread through every carrier, however it does include handsets that are being purchased using the Moto Maker customization option. And as we had heard rumors of this price drop, there had also been rumors of the Moto Maker option making it into retail outlets.

Well, similar to the lack of announcement from Motorola on the price cut, it looks like Moto Maker is quietly being added to Best Buy retail locations. The details are coming by way of phoneArena who mention they have received “a couple of tips on the setups.” The key here, we have yet to see how many of the Best Buy locations will have Moto Maker available.

For now though, there was some photographic proof and what can we say — it looks like a pretty sweet setup. The setup not only has the Moto X on display with the appropriate pricing, but the Moto Maker option is available by way of a touchscreen sitting in the display. There also appears to be a selection of colored backs sitting off to the side.

Simply put, this could be a nice option for those who want to go the Moto Maker route, but are a bit nervous to choose a color without being able to see it in person. That said, at present, the Moto Maker handsets are still only available for AT&T. That is expected to change, but so far, no timeline has been given to suggest when that may happen.

Samsung hits record profit, chip margins provide a big boost
Oct 26th 2013, 15:09, by Justin Herrick

Everything seems to be going great right now for Samsung. Last year’s Galaxy S III bested Apple’s iPhone in a touchscreen accuracy test, and the company has apparently sold more than 40 million Galaxy S 4 handsets. Now, Q3 of 2013′s financial numbers have come in. Samsung recorded a record profit of $7.76 billion. That is a lot of cash. While smartphone margins are plateauing, they have found success in chips due to their margins almost doubling since last year. According to The Wall Street Journal, “the importance of Samsung’s chip unit–comprised of memory and logic chips–is being highlighted as it now accounts for roughly one-fifth of its total operating profit.” That is a very impressive increase in both margins and growth. Samsung may put more of a focus on their chip business if margins continue to grow.

Amongst all of the cash that Samsung is sitting on, no one knows what they will do with it. The easy answer would be to acquire other companies, possibly to assist the launch of their inevitable wearable products.

Alcatel ONE TOUCH POP 7 leaks, shows colorful, thin Android tablet
Oct 26th 2013, 13:57, by Derek Ross

Alcatel OneTouch Pop 7

When it  comes to Android devices, Alcatel generally isn’t a brand name that most are familiar with here in the good ole USA. Established in 2004,  as a joint venture between Alcatel-Lucent of France and TCL Communication of China, this manufacturer has been pushing budget friendly Android phones and tablets in recent times. At CES 2013, Alcatel unveiled the world’s thinnest smartphone, the Alcatel ONE TOUCH Idol Ultra and recently announced the T-Mobile branded ONE TOUCH Fierce and ONE TOUCH Evolve.

Today, thanks to famed insider @evleaks, we’re seeing the Alcatel ONE TOUCH POP 7 tablet. As we can see, Alcaltel will continue their trend of ultra thin Android devices. The POP 7 aims to be a colorful tablet, giving consumers the choices of at least yellow, hot pink, light blue, and red.

Switchr – Task Switcher for Android
Oct 26th 2013, 13:00, by Kris Carlon

Not everyone owns a Note 3 and has all that multi-tasking goodness that Samsung offers, but that doesn't mean you can't get a bit of task switching love on your Android to make yourself more productive. It's important at this point though to note the difference between true multi-tasking – working on simultaneously running apps like on the Note 3 – and regular task switching – just switching between apps one at a time. Android already has the recently used apps cascade, and we shared Edge with you a little while ago, but Switchr brings a little more to the table.

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update schedule for Samsung devices leaks online
Oct 26th 2013, 07:39, by Harrison Kaminsky

Android 4.3 Update Schedule

While many of us wait for the official release of Android 4.4 KitKat, most are still waiting on their OTA update of Android 4.3 to their devices, namely the Samsung Galaxy S 3, Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 2, and Galaxy S4 Active.

Blind waiting will no longer be necessary, as a document leaked earlier today which listed the update schedule for the aforementioned devices.

  • Galaxy Note 2 (Verizon): November 29
  • Galaxy Note 2 (AT&T): November 20
  • Galaxy S4 (Verizon): October 28
  • Galaxy S4 (AT&T): November 13
  • Galaxy S3 (Verizon): November 22
  • Galaxy S3 (AT&T): November 13

Note 2 owners, Galaxy Active owners, and owners of any of these devices on either Sprint or T-Mobile should check the image above for specific dates. With these 4.3 updates to these Samsung devices, Galaxy Gear support comes as well.

Keep in mind that the document states that these dates are subject to change, so nothing is set in stone.
