As new devices continue to come out, chances are you will find one that really catches your eye. Of course that means you're stuck with the old device unless you sell it on Swappa or trade it in. However, it seems used smartphones are depreciating a lot quicker since newer phones are hitting the market just as fast. If you can't sell your old device or you don’t want to, then do the next best thing. Take that old phone and turn it into a portable media player. Not sure about how to go about doing that? Well you're in the right place. Hit the break to get started.

Get some accessories

First and foremost before you can even use that device as a portable media player, you need to invest into some quality headphones or a portable bluetooth speaker. I'm rocking this little Android speaker and it's only $25 plus shipping. The 4w stereo speakers packed into this little frame produces decent sound. They won't change the way you hear music but they do a decent job nonetheless.

On the headphone front I would recommend the a-Jays we reviewed here. The sound they put out for the price is hard to be beat.

Factory Reset/Flash a new rom

The first thing you need to do is factory reset the device. You can do this through settings or do a clean wipe using a custom recovery. If you have the latter you can find a decent stable ROM to use. I say stable because, nothing kills the enjoyment of your music like a random reboot right in the middle of it. Another reason to use a custom ROM instead of the stock one that comes with the device is that you're more than likely going to get rid of the bloatware that takes up space. If you don’t want to run a custom ROM, doing a factory reset still makes sense since your phone will run alot smoother. Just make sure you have backed everything up.

Install Some Media Apps

What's the point of having a portable media device without having access to your media. Apps like Spotify, Slacker or Pandora are great. If you have a premium account for any of these apps then you can download music for offline listening. The new comer in Play Music's All Access, which combines an easy way to access your library and stream music you don’t already own.

streaming-music-services-2

We have a good list of Podcast apps to check out for those of you who listen to those. YouTube and Play TV & Movies are staples for more media consumption. With adequate storage, you will be able to rock or watch to your hearts content. Of course you’ll need a decent music player for that.

Don’t forget, you might not have a cellular connection anymore, but you still have Wi-Fi for live streaming or downloading stuff for times when you will be away from WiFi.

Storage

Storage is one of the most important aspects of having a portable media player. While most older Android phones have a micro SD slot, newer ones can be hit or miss. Most devices have at least 16GB (usable storage is always less) so you should be good to go. With music being in the cloud these days you should be fine regardless, but you will be limited to a WiFi connection.

Conclusion

That's it. Your old phone may not have the horsepower you need for daily use but it's more than capable of being a portable music/media machine. With the right accessories and media software, you will breathe new life into your old device. Throw in a good pair of headphones and/or a decent portable speaker, and you'll be ready to rock out wherever you are.

T-Mobile Moto X to be exclusively available through Motorola for an off-contract price of $599.99

Rumors had originally suggested that the Moto X would be available for T-Mobile exclusively through Google Play, however today we learned that this is not the case. The device recently appeared on Motorola’s website, available for $599.99. The listing says that the T-Mobile specific device is “exclusive to Motorola.com,” so this certainly confirms the previous rumor that T-Mobile won’t be carrying the device at all.

The off-contract price is a bit higher than the $579.99 that AT&T is asking for the device, but is the same as Verizon. The device is currently out of stock, and we’re assuming that the T-Mobile Moto X is the same phone specs-wise as the other variants. We’ll be sure of all the information once the device is available for purchase.

Commercial Break app announces addition of "Live Events" feature
Sep 9th 2013, 16:46, by Jeff Causey

If you really, really like flipping channels during sporting events when the commercials come on and who doesn’t, the Commercial Break app may be one you want to check out, especially now that they have added a “Live Events” feature. Sports fans can monitor multiple games simultaneously and be alerted when an event returns from commercial break via an alert on their smartphone. According to developer Aristarchos LTD., Commercial Break will support a variety of sports leagues this fall, including NFL and NCAA football games as well as the upcoming MLB playoffs, subject to network blackout rules. Users can “follow” an event in advance in order to receive a reminder when it is starting. The app issues an alert every time that event returns from commercial break once the user lets the app know they started watching an event. According to CEO Haim Kairy, the Commercial Break app “helps sports fans get the most out of their cable package.” Commercial Break first went into public beta this past July for iPhone users and with today’s announcement, expands to include Android devices.

Hit the break to check out a video showing how the app works, some screen shots, and the full press release. We have also provided a download link to the Google Play Store if you want to give the free app a try.

Commercial Break Launches 'Live Events' to Help Sports Fans Break Free from Commercials

New feature lets sports fans "follow" events in advance for automatic alerts when commercial breaks end; available for majority of nationally televised football and baseball games this season.

Commercial Break’s “Live Events’ feature lets sports fans follow, or pre-order, events free of charge to help them break free from commercials.

New York, NY (PRWEB) September 09, 2013

Commercial Break, the app that alerts viewers in real time the moment their TV program returns from commercials, today announces the release of its "Live Events" feature, enabling iOS and Android users to "follow" an upcoming event in advance and receive a reminder before it starts. Commercial Break will automatically monitor the event for commercial breaks and stop when the event is over.

Commercial Break, which will support the majority of nationally televised NFL, MLB and NCAA Football games in the 2013/2014 season (in accordance with network blackout rules), today also announces its expansion to the Android™ operating system. The mobile app previously launched a public beta for the iPhone® in July.

Commercial Break's "Live Events" feature enables sports fans to get instant alerts every time a game that they are following returns from commercials. Fans who watch multiple games simultaneously can therefore know when the action on another channel comes back from commercials, so they don't miss any critical moments from their favorite team or action-packed game.

"Ideally, every fan would have a wall of TVs tuned in to every game," said Commercial Break Co-Founder and CEO Haim Kairy. "But since that is not a reality for most people, Commercial Break helps sports fans get the most out of their cable package by allowing them to spend less time watching commercials and more time watching premium live action."

In addition to iOS, Commercial Break is now available for Android free of charge. Commercial Break's unique algorithms identify the end of commercial breaks by analyzing dozens of cues from audio and video signals, 40 times per second, through Digital Signal Processing (DSP).

About Commercial Break
Developed by Israeli start-up veterans Haim Kairy and Eli Ben-David, the Commercial Break mobile app delivers automatic, real-time alerts the moment a TV program comes back from commercials. The app is currently available free of charge on Apple's App Store and Google Play. To start taking back your commercial breaks, visit http://www.CommercialBreak.com.

Motorola kicks off "Lazy Phone" Moto X ad campaign
Sep 9th 2013, 16:28, by Aditya Thawardas

x_commercialMotorola has launched their first big ad campaign for their Moto X, and it goes under the name “Lazy Phone.” To kick it off, there are three new television commercials that showcase the X’s innovative features, including Touchless Control, Quick Capture, and Active Notifications. Comedian TJ Miller is the star of the spots, which seem very Samsung-ish, to me.

You can check out the three commercials embedded after the break.

The camera. If there's any part of the smartphone that's seen its usage rate skyrocket over the past few years, that'd be it. Smartphone cameras have gone from little VGA shooters barely worthy of being called a camera to 12, 20, and even 41 megapixel beasts with image quality unfathomable just a few short years ago.

We now walk almost everywhere with a small camera in our pockets or purses, logged in to Facebook and Instagram and Twitter, ready to share our latest heartwarming, heartbreaking, intense, intriguing, and inane moments with our family, our friends, and the world.

So are mobile phone cameras really good enough to replace a dedicated point-and-shoot camera? What about a bigger traditional DSLR? With these photos ever easier to share and reshare, how can we be sure that the photos we take that need to be private stay private?

Xbox Music to offer free online streaming, new mobile app
Sep 9th 2013, 13:47, by Jess Blanchard

Xbox Music is taking a page from Spotify's book. The service is now free for all users over the web, and mobile apps launched for both iOS and Android today.

Windows 8 users have enjoyed free streaming for some time now, but with this new move Microsoft hopes to reign in paid customers. Similar to (or exactly like) Spotify's business model, Xbox Music will be free to stream over the web, while the mobile app will require a paid subscription. You can purchase an Xbox Music Pass for $10 a month or $100 a year when paid in full. Web streaming will be completely free and unlimited for six months; access becomes more limited after that.

While Microsoft is obviously emulating Spotify and Rdio in this endeavor, Xbox Music still lacks much of the functionality that makes those services appealing. Currently, the mobile app does not provide the ability to play tracks offline, although Microsoft claims that feature will be added “in the coming months.”  Xbox Music also doesn't allow users to link out to tracks. And according to recent user reviews, catalog browsing and automated playlist creation, as seen in Google Music, are conspicuously absent.

If you're interested in giving Xbox Music a try, download the app using the market package below. It's free to try for 30 days.
