Apps of the Week

See what apps have made their way onto the devices here at AC

It's time again for another edition of our Apps of the Week column, where we show off the apps that are on the devices of the Android Central writers. Whether they're tools, media players, live wallpapers, readers, games or something obscure and fun, you can count on us to bring you a grouping of apps every week that are worth looking at.

This week we have a tool to help you read, a media player, a couple of great games and some odds and ends for you to check out. Read on past the break to see how the picks this week stack up against the rest.

A little backstory on the Android logo

android logos

The Android logo, in my opinion, deserves to go down in history as one of the greatest ever. I have never seen any other brand draw as much positivity as the little green robot does for the platform, and has certainly played it’s role in helping the operating system  grow to the point it has so far. Yet, until when I read this post on the New York Times, I realized I never really tried to find out who designed the logo and how did it come about.

There is one key passage from the post that I wanted to highlight here, regarding the inspiration and the vision that the team at Google had for the logo:

The logo, she (Irina Blok, who created the logo) was told, should involve a robot, and so she studied sci-fi toys and space movies — anything that might help her create a character. In the end, she took inspiration from a distinctly human source: the pictograms of the universal man and woman that often appear on restroom doors. She drew a stripped-down robot with a tin-can-shaped torso and antennas on his head.

While Blok worked on her design, she and her colleagues agreed that the logo, like the software, should be open-sourced. "We decided it would be a collaborative logo that everybody in the world could customize," she says. "That was pretty daring." Most companies, of course, defend their trademark from copycats, and million-dollar lawsuits have been filed over the rights to corporate insignia. This one would remain free.

android restroom tshirtThe first paragraph made me think of the popular T-shirt to the right, one that I am now quite proud to own. That T-shirt now almost feels like a part of the history of Android.

However, it is the second paragraph that really strikes a chord: one of the major reasons regarding the positivity to the Android logo is the fact that we have seen it take innumerable forms over the past six years. We have seen Irina’s creation as pins that attendees at MWC would run around to collect, as portable speakers, collectible figurines and also our very own Phandroid max

Allowing people such freedom has helped create a better community for fans. It has also added a sense of fluidity to the brand that nobody else can match.

If you would like to learn more about the history of the Android logo, I’d recommend reading this, this and this.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 ad

Samsung typically does a decent job with their advertising. I thought their “The Next Big Thing Is Already Here” campaign, targeting Apple fanboys, was pretty good, and I also enjoyed their Superbowl ad. However, their team definitely seemed to not be at the top of their game recently, particularly with their Note 3 efforts.

The puppets ad seemed to make no particular sense to me, while the one feature Lionel Messi was a case of not quite understanding the entire theme of the soundtrack used. In their latest bid, however, they’ve gone back to basics and focused purely on demonstrating the strengths of their device. It works well, in my opinion. It’s not glamorous or particularly memorable, but the best of the lot they’ve put out so far.

Facebook

When beta simply isn’t close enough to the bleeding edge, alpha testing comes along to slash its way into the hearts of those who must be among the first people to get the latest features. If you’re one of those people and you’re a user of Facebook, you’ll be happy to know that Facebook has announced a Facebook for Android alpha testers program.

Lead mobile release engineer Christian Legnitto claims that the alpha testing program “is not for the faint hearted” and that “features will come and go”. The alpha stage will naturally be less stable than the beta and standard app, however, it will offer brave Facebook users an opportunity to be among the first people to see the direction in which Facebook is headed.

Legnitto says that the alpha and beta testing programs will “give early user feedback” and ensure that Facebook can “confidently provide the best app experience to everyone using Facebook.”

Another milestone for Facebook was the fact that since the beta testers program was launched in June, the program has reached over 1 million daily active users in over 150 countries, using smartphones from 50 different OEMs, running a multitude of Android versions.

If you’re looking to join the Facebook alpha testers program, hit the source link below to find out how to join.

Samsung has showed off the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 in a unique and charming advertisement where the Note 3′s features are displayed in the form of a pop up scrapbook. The advertisement and indeed the scrapbook itself, follow the adventures of a Galaxy Note 3 user who travelled to London.

The scrapbook, titled “Everyday Wonders”, showcases the Note 3′s features very well, showing off the S Pen’s Air command, Action memo, S Finder and the Multi Window feature found in older Samsung smartphones, but improved upon in the Note 3.

The advertisement ends with the tagline “Galaxy Note 3 in London”, and in the final 10 seconds, demonstrates the Galaxy Gear and its smart relay feature. The scrapbook advertisement also alludes to the fact that the Note 3′s design was in fact inspired by a classic notebook, and a lot of the features showed off had a really nice scrapbook vibe to them, especially the aptly named “scrapbook” feature.

What do you think of the Note 3 and the advertisement?
