Verizon Moto X finally lands in web store
Aug 29th 2013, 06:06, by Juan Carlos Torres

For you Verizon customers who have been counting the days, the wait is finally over. Motorola’s latest masterpiece, the Moto X, is now available for purchase on Verizon’s online shop.

verizon-moto-x1

After Motorola‘s launch early this month, the Moto X has become quite a sensation. It may not be up to par with the latest or soon to be announced smartphones in terms of raw hardware, but the device definitely makes up for it in overall performance and features. Despite running on a slightly lower processor, Motorola’s X8 computing system masks that fact. Plus, the two low-power context computing chips give it an added edge with Touchless Controls and Active Display notifications. Motorola also threw in a rather nice marketing gimmick, allowing buyers to completely personalize their units.

With everything that’s going for it, people have been eagerly awaiting when the smartphone would be available from their favorite carriers. Of course, preference has been given to AT&T who just released the phone last week, with other major US carries said to be following in days. That day is here and Verizon customers can now avail of the device, both with or without contracts. If you still haven’t decided whether to get one or not, maybe our review of the Moto X can help you make that decision. As was reported, the Moto Maker customization tool is still not available for other carriers and is expected to still come at the end of the year.

So far only a 16 GB configuration is available, with a choice of either black or white colors. The Moto X sells for $199.99 with a two-year contract or $599.99 for the full price. We also received a tip regarding a “VERIZON30″ coupon code that will give a 30% discount on the purchase, so you might want to try it out if it works for you as well.

Waze finally showing some signs that it's a Google-owned company, new update sets Google as primary search provider
Aug 29th 2013, 00:31, by Harrison Kaminsky

Waze-Search

When Google bought Waze back in June for around $1 billion, we all speculated about the awesome changes this could eventually bring to Google Maps.  We’ve seen quite a few since then, but this is the first time that we’re actually seeing signs that Google is truly taking control over the Waze application.

In a new update, Waze has integrated a new search bar (powered by Google, of course) which is visible while viewing the map. The UI is someone cleaner-looking as well and certainly more minimal. 1080p devices also now have full support available, and some bug fixes and optimizations were thrown in as well.

This is certainly just the start of the changes we’ll be seeing with the Waze app, as Google will want to make their $1 billion acquisition worthwhile.

That day has finally come, as Wikipad has announced that the tablet will be released to the UK on September 27 for £250. The 7-incher will be available at a number of “well-known retailers” according to Wikipad, and should be widely available at the release date. We’ll just have to wait and see how the launch goes… Anyone in the UK interested in grabbing one? Hit us up in the comments!

Check out the full press release after the break.

Hangouts Goes HD in a Move From Google to Go Plugin Free
Aug 29th 2013, 00:20, by Jack Holt

google_hangouts

There may be a lucky few of you who are seeing video chats in Hangouts a lot more clearly. That’s because Google has been quietly rolling out HD capabilities to Hangouts. While Google cranks up the quality of their revamped messenger it’s not just about that. In attempts to bring us video chat capabilities without the need for a plugin Google changed from the H.264 plugin to the open VP8.

Google’s Vice President of Engineering Chee Chew told the folks at Gigaom that this move will add, “cleaner, better video.” H.264 couldn’t handle HD video well as video in HD for up to 10 participants would require too much processing power. That’s not the case with VP8 as Google’s able to produce better quality video at lower bit rates. However, it’s not only about looks but a matter of convenience.

While you’ve been able to use various effects to video chats such as birthday hats or scuba glasses, WebRTC will eventually make this easier. The video becomes a native HTML element which that will allow an easier time for overlays and the like. As of now the rendering of such gags are on the client side of things and an easy way to do this with WebRTC is not available yet. But what does this mean for Google’s current video technology rendering vendor Vidyo?

According to Vidyo CEO Ofer Shapiro, "The need to install something is somewhat of a barrier." That being said Vidyo will announce that they will be adding support, as well as working on, the next generation of the technology, VP9. They’ll work to provide that tech in the enterprise world. However this upgrade won’t just happen seamlessly for everyone.

Microsoft is pushing in a different direction with CU-WebRTC and Apple hasn’t given a statement on whether or not it will use WebRTC or not. Microsoft’s idea is to let developers decide on what codec they’ll use. According to Chew, "Some browsers will have the plugin to fall back on.” However others will not need to have a plugin at all.

Hugo Barra resigns from Google, will join Chinese phone maker Xiaomi
Aug 29th 2013, 01:54, by Robert Nazarian

hugo-barra-google-presents-samsung-galaxy-s4-google-edition

Well just when I thought things were settling down for the day, Bam, major news breaks. Vice President of product management for Android, Hugo Barra, is leaving Google and will join Chinese phone maker Xiaomi. If you have watched any major Google Keynote, you’re familiar with Hugo. He recently unveiled the Samsung Galaxy S 4 Google Edition as well as the latest Nexus 7.

AllThingsD is reporting that his resignation came just before a romantic relationship with another Googler ended. What is most interesting is this Googler is now dating Sergey Brin, who just left his wife. Word is the resignation is unrelated, but how could it not be?

This is the second major loss for Android. Earlier in the year, Andy Rubin stepped away to “start a new chapter at Google.” Sandar Pichai took over for Andy Rubin and has been doing great, but Google hasn’t announced a replacement for Barra.

The Android team has some excellent talent, and I have no doubt Google will be able to fill Barra’s shoes, but this is a tough loss and we will miss him. Congratulations to Xiaomi for grabbing one hell of a guy.

Verizon now selling Moto X online, yours for $199 on-contract
Aug 29th 2013, 05:29, by Andrew Martonik

Moto X

Still no official date for in-store availability of the handset

Right on time with what Verizon promised previously, the Moto X has gone on sale from the carrier's online store for $199.99 with a two-year contract agreement. Remember that Moto Maker isn't in play here, so you're going to be choosing between black or white varieties for the moment and will only have the option of 16GB of storage. If you aren't available for an upgrade or interested in signing a contract you'll be paying a full $599.99 out of pocket for the device, as we could've guessed.

Same as before, we're not entirely sure when the latest Motorola device will be making its way to stores other than Verizon's previous statement of "in the coming weeks". Not only are in-store sales a huge part of the overall volume of phones sold, it means a lot for branding and device awareness.

If you've made up your mind on the Moto X for Verizon and buying in-store isn't a requirement, you can scoop one up now at the source link below with free shipping.
