Q:
Mike asks: Hey Kris, do you think Samsung will be launching any new Note tablets? The Note 10.1 is out-dated and the Note 8 is a little small, I am interested in S-note for college. Should I wait for any new releases or should I just buy a current Note device?
A:
With IFA so close, I think it's safe to say that you should wait at least a little while to see what's coming in the future. We've seen signs that Samsung is preparing new 10- and 12.2-inch tablets that feature some pretty impressive specs, including 2560×1600 resolution displays, so if they're coming out soon enough, it's definitely worth the wait.
Q:
Alex asks: When do you think the next Nexus phone will come out? What specs could it have?
A:
The last Nexus phone came out in November 2012, so November of this year isn't entirely out of the realm of possibility. That said, we really don't know much at all about what Google is planning on, and with the Moto X having recently been released, it's possible that they could wait a while and we may not see a new Nexus phone until 2014. On specs, there isn't anything concrete enough to go on, so it could be anybody's guess.
Q:
Anthony says: Hey Kris, I've heard that there will be a HTC One Max. Should I get it over the upcoming Galaxy Note 3? Also, do you think the One Max will have a stylus like the Note series?
A:
I would wait until both phones have been released and reviewed before making a call on which one to buy, but both seem to be shaping up to be pretty impressive. HTC has made a phone with a stylus before, and people do seem to like the S Pen, so the rationale behind including one in the One Max makes sense, but right now it's anybody's guess on whether or not we'll see one. My own gut feeling is that we won't see a stylus included in the One Max, but you never know.
Q:
Ruzveh asks: Is there any app that can use the IR Blaster in phones that have them to replace a universal remote?
A:
Sadly, not as far as I know. While some companies sell little dongles that plug into your phone and claim to make it work as a universal remote, I haven't tried them so I'm not sure how they work. As far as I know, there is no app that uses the built-in IR Blasters in the Galaxy S4 or the HTC One but offers more features, probably because Samsung and HTC don't make it easy for developers to access.
Q:
Kev says: Will Verizon's CDMA phones that use a SIM card work internationally if i put a working SIM card in without unlocking the phone?
A:
It depends. If it's a world phone, also known as a global ready phone, then yes. These phones work on both CDMA and GSM networks. For example, the HTC One or the new Motorola Droid phones will work internationally. If your phone is CDMA-only, I'm afraid you're out of luck.
Q:
Vladimir asks: Hey Kris! Is it safe to re-root an Android phone (in my chase the HTC Sensation) which has been rooted, but then locked again?
A:
It's generally as safe to re-root your phone as it was to root it in the first place. It's not without some risk, but rooting never is. That said, if you've had your firmware updated since the phone was re-locked, it could be more difficult or even impossible to lock it now.
Q:
Omkar asks: What happens after some one wins the Sunday Giveaway? What you guys do after you announce the winner? If I win do I have to pay shipping charges?
A:
As soon as the winner is selected, they are sent an email letting them know that they've won, even before announcement is made. After we have the winner's address, we ship the phone as early as the following Monday, but depending on where the prize is located, it could take longer. And don't worry, we cover the shipping charges.
