Your fingers are safe: Severed digits can't fool fingerprint scanners
Sep 17th 2013, 18:00, by Kris Carlon

It didn't take long for this news to hit the shelves after the reveal of Apple's new iPhone 5s which features a fingerprint scanner as an additional layer of security. The HTC One Max also looks set to include the technology and undoubtedly this will become a standard for all smartphones to come. But how many of you have wondered if the plague proportions of ''apple picking'' (smartphone theft) will soon mutate into ''apple and finger picking''?

Firefox update brings WebRTC and NFC tab sharing to Android version
Sep 17th 2013, 17:23, by Jerry Hildenbrand

Firefox

Communicate without plugins, bump with your friends, and rest your eyes at night with the latest update for Firefox

The Firefox browser has been updated to version 24 for Android, and there's quite the change log in place. WebRTC (Real Time Communications) support has been added, which will allow users to send and receive both audio and video without the use of any plug-ins on properly built web sites. This is the future, boys and girls.

In addition, users with capable phones can now share any open tab via NFC. Bump your NFC-equipped phone against another NFC-equipped phone, and the magic of electrons will send it right over.

Add in a few minor, but handy, details like a new Night Mode (light text on a dark background) and this is shaping up to be one heck of an update for fans of Mozilla's open-source mobile browser. To give it a try check the Google Play link above.

In spite of the great initial expectations, Wallet has been one of Google's less successful services, with in-store payments remaining to this day available only on a limited number of devices carried by Sprint and a few smaller operators. One could argue that the blame for this failure belongs to the other three big US carriers, who support Isis, a competing mobile payment service.

Even if in-store payments seem dead in the water for now, Google isn't willing to give up on Wallet just yet: the company announced a big update to the Android app, which is now available for the vast majority of Android devices in the US. While paying via NFC remains limited to the devices that have supported it until now, users of all devices running Android 2.3 or higher will soon be able to install Google Wallet.

Wallet gains some new features in the update. Foremost, users will be able to send money to any adult person in the United States, provided they have an email address. Money can be sent for free from the Wallet balance or from a bank account, or from a credit or debit card, in which case there's a small fee in place. This is similar to the Send money through Gmail option that Google began to offer this summer.

Another interesting new feature of Google Wallet for Android is support for loyalty cards. Users can scan the barcodes on loyalty cards or type in their codes, and present the app at checkout for scanning. The new app also features Google Offers coupon integration, as well as a dashboard to track financial activity.

Google updates Wallet, adds support for all US Android phones running 2.3 and up
Sep 17th 2013, 17:16, by Dima Aryeh

The death of NFC is upon us! Not really, but it looks like Google is really pushing for a backup plan in case NFC fails in the market. Yesterday, they purchased the company Bump, which made an app allowing file transfers through a bump that did not require NFC. I speculated that it was going to be Google’s backup plan if NFC doesn’t work out, because NFC isn’t going very far at the moment. However, they’ve now done the same with Google Wallet.

Previously, the Google Wallet app was only available on NFC enabled Android phones on Sprint or a few select prepaid carriers. It would allow mobile payments through NFC, but most carriers blocked it because they are creating their own mobile payment system, Isis. Even though Google Wallet is a service that spans beyond just mobile payments, it was limited to only a few phones. However, Google has changed that.

Starting today, the Google Wallet app will be updated to support all US Android phones running 2.3 Gingerbread and up. It’s currently limited to the US, but any phone on any carrier with or without NFC will be able to download this app when the update rolls out to everyone. NFC payments won’t be enabled for anyone new, but there are plenty of new features to be excited about!

Building on the announcement of a money transfer feature in Gmail, the new Google Wallet app will allow you to send money to other Google Wallet users from a bank account or your Wallet balance absolutely free. And if you use a credit or debit card, there will be a small fee. Will it take on PayPal? It’ll be a while before that happens, but it’s an awesome service to start using. And it should offer purchase protection according to the Wallet FAQ, so it’ll be the perfect PayPal replacement.

You can also add things like loyalty cards to your Google Wallet app by entering the code or even just scanning the barcode on it. This will allow you to show stores loyalty cards from your phone without needing to carry them around or to activate them through NFC. There are also various loyalty programs built into the app.

Google is pushing further and further away from NFC technology without abandoning it. NFC isn’t really expanding at this point, but is Google afraid it might fail? It’s creating a damn good backup plan in case it does. But really, the new Google Wallet app was needed. Wallet is a service far bigger than just mobile payments, so it’s good to see its functionality being expanded on mobile.

This new app update will be rolling out like all Google app updates do: over the next few weeks. So keep an eye out for when you can install the Google Wallet app on any device! And maybe we just might see the app go cross platform, losing its alliance to Android. If it allows money transfers to any smartphone user, Android or not, I’m down with that.

Google dials in some new security for Google Voice
Sep 17th 2013, 17:39, by Jeff Causey

google_voice_changes

Google has announced some new security settings for Google Voice that will impact how users access voicemail. If a user accesses their account using the phone they have marked as Mobile, they now have the option of requiring a PIN to be entered before accessing voicemail. For other numbers a user has listed on their account, like Home or Work, the PIN will be required when trying to access Google voicemail. If a user tries to call from a phone number that is not already listed on their account as a verified forwarding phone, the Google system will ask the user to enter one of their verified numbers followed by the PIN code.

The new settings can be accessed and configured by going to your Google Voice account, accessing Settings -> Phones -> Edit (for the phone you wish to change) ->Show advanced settings -> Voicemail Access. According to a pop-up message, the new requirements will take effect October 1st.

The fake iPhone 5Cs are already here with the Goophone i5C
Sep 17th 2013, 17:35, by Quentyn Kennemer

Despite the fact that more and more beautiful Android phones are starting to set themselves apart in the design department, some manufacturers still feel the need to piggyback the success of Apple’s line. The most notable is Goophone, who has been riding the fake iPhone wave since the beginning of time. Their latest concoction is the Goophone i5C, which is obviously based on the iPhone 5C, Apple’s “unapologetically plastic” phone that is meant to be a more affordable option than the flagship iPhone 5S

The phone actually replicates the look and feel of Apple’s original quite well, with obvious differences being the logos. These phones also tend to be built a bit cheaply, so although it may look the part we wouldn’t expect it to feel the part.

goophone i5c

For specs, the Goophone i5C presents MediaTek’s dual-core 1.3GHz MT6572 processor, a 4-inch display of unknown resolution, 512MB of RAM, a 5 megapixel camera, and Android 4.2. On top of the OS is a theme that is made to look like iOS 7 — no surprise there. We’re not sure what would make someone want a cheap knockoff to a quality phone, but there it is anyway.

And, to be fair, we wouldn’t disagree if someone said Apple’s own iPhone 5C looked a little cheap too (especially with those dog-ugly cases they think will change the world). Be sure to take a look at it in the 6 minute reel sitting above.
