Carriers: picking the lesser of all evils - Talk Mobile
Aug 26th 2013, 16:00, by Talk Mobile

Talk Mobile 2013 has so far touched on the big rocks of devices, operating systems, and services. Now it's time to touch on the biggest and most expensive rock in the mobile device system: the carriers. Most of us get locked in to two or three year contracts that can add up to thousands of dollars over the life that contract.

Our choice of carrier determines so much. It sets not just the cost of our service, but the quality and extent of our service. The carriers can discriminate on what content we are served, who we call and at what rate, the third-party services we access, the devices we can use, and so much more.

With all of these variables, how are we supposed to pick a carrier? Should we let the device selection dictate our choices, or the service itself? Are there advantages to picking a smaller carrier over the big national brands? And what's our recourse if we're not satisfied with our choice?

There's a lot to discuss when it comes to carriers. Big and small, cheap and expensive, they're an important part of the mobile ecosystem.

LG acknowledges G Pad 8.3 in new YouTube video
Aug 26th 2013, 14:42, by Scott Webster

LG just doesn’t know how to sit quietly on their products. Case in point, the rumored 8.3-inch G Pad tablet. Word of the device has slowly started gaining some steam over the last few weeks and it has become pretty not a matter of if, but when.

A new YouTube video which went live in the last hour has LG asking random folks on the street to describe the features of the perfect tablet experience. As you would expect there is talk of portability, larger screen, power, all-day use case, and more.  The clip ends with the splash of ‘LG G Pad 8.3′ pretty much confirming that it’s right around the corner.

If history is an indication, LG will keep sneaking out bits and pieces of the tablet in close up images or vaguely worded messages on social media in the run-up to its debut.

With IFA slated to kick off in but a few days time we might look for LG to introduce the tablet in Berlin at the annual event.

Samsung Galaxy S5 to feature 16-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization — report
Aug 26th 2013, 15:31, by Scott Webster

galaxy_s4_camera_closeup_720

The next generation of Galaxy S smartphone could boast a 16-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) technology, according to new reports. Once rumored for the Galaxy Note 3, the OIS stuff likely won’t be ready until until the following round of devices.

As of today, the only model of Samsung phone to feature stabilization is the Galaxy S4 Zoom, however that (10X optical zoom) is a horse of a different color. With IFA set to get underway in a matter of days we might hear more about the Galaxy Note 3 and its spec list.

Verizon Moto X appears to be on track for August 29 launch
Aug 26th 2013, 14:16, by Ankit Banerjee

Moto X

While earlier reports stated that the Moto X would be available from most carriers on August 23, only AT&T currently has the device on offer, along with the added benefit of being the only carrier offering the use of the Moto Maker device customization feature. Sprint and Verizon both have pre-registration pages up with the device being available “in the coming weeks,” but Verizon seems to be on track to meet a previously suggested August 29 launch, according to some Droid Life sources.

The report also mentions that certain third party Verizon retailers will have to order the phone for you as they may have very limited stock. If launched on August 29, we’re not yet sure if Verizon stores will face the same “constrained inventory” problem or not. For now, the woven white and woven black versions of the device will be available from Verizon, with the use of Moto Maker available only later in November, once the exclusive deal with AT&T runs out. The price of the device is expected to be the same as that of AT&T, at $199.99 for the 16GB version.

You can find the Verizon Moto X sign up page here. To find out more about the Moto X and to decide whether this is the device for you, check out our detailed review of the Motorola smartphone here -

What are your thoughts? Will you be picking up the Moto X from Verizon on August 29, or would you rather wait till the Moto Maker is available? Let us know in the comments section below.

HTC One body pictured in electric blue, looks snazzy

@evleaks press shot

We've heard that HTC is preparing a blue version of the sleek One several times already. We even got an alleged press shot from @evleaks (pictured above), which is, when it comes to leaks, the closest thing you're likely to get to official confirmation.

But it's possible that @evleaks got it wrong after all when it comes to the blue HTC One. The image below surfaced on ePrice, a Chinese website where unannounced devices are often leaked. As you can see for yourself, this HTC One body sports a vibrant electric blue paintjob that looks nothing like the pale "Facebook blue" in the @evleaks press shot.

htc one blue

The intense blue in the ePrice leak seems more in line with the vibrant hue on the HTC One Glamour Red that first launched in July. With that said, we might be looking at a prototype or a sample, and the end product could sport a milder hue of blue, though that would be a shame in my opinion.

Verizon was rumored to carry the blue version of the HTC One in the United States, but we don't have any info on the availability of the new model so far.

LG designing new tablet that's "just right" for you
Aug 26th 2013, 15:15, by Nick Sarafolean

About a week ago, one of LG’s execs gave an interview where he talked about all sorts of things LG was cooking up in its not-so-top-secret labs. One of those things was a new tablet slated for release by the end of this year. And as with the G2, it seems that LG isn’t too shy about us knowing about it before it’s released. In fact, LG is asking people a question, “What would make a tablet just right?”

LG hit the streets in its latest teaser, asking this very question to real people. LG went to the UK, and the people interviewed have rather charming British accents. Whether that’s an indication of where the tablet is to be released, we don’t know. But we do know that if LG listens to what these people actually said, we could have a very practical tablet on our hands.

A common theme among people was portability. Many of them wanted it to fit in their pocket or bag and a couple said that they don’t carry their current tablets with them nearly as much as they thought that they would. But one of the other big things was the screen size. It seems that consumers would rather not compromise on the screen size of their tablet; they want something that’s portable and yet has a large enough screen to watch a movie on or show things to multiple friends. One person in particular mentioned the viewing angles and commented that she didn’t want to have to tilt the screen all over for her friends to see it.

All these points make sense, and we certainly agree with them. Judging by the screen size that LG has chosen, 8.3-inches, we’re going to hazard a guess and say that it was the largest size LG could manage without it being uncomfortable or unable to fit into your pocket. I myself have always preferred a slightly larger tablet than 7 inches; 8.9 inches has long been quite possibly the perfect size for a tablet. An 8.3-inch screen sounds comfortable and roomy to me. Big thumbs up to LG for choosing that screen size.

The interviewees also mentioned that they’d like the ability to control your TV, which is becoming increasingly popular in phones and tablets. Many also said that their tablets were family devices. So, it would be great if LG designed the G Pad 8.3 to be easy to share. At the end of the day, we’re actually excited to see what LG has to offer with this new tablet.

What would make a tablet just right for you?

Vote for your favorite Android phones
Aug 26th 2013, 13:18, by Nick Gray

Since the back-to-school season is upon us, we thought we should put together a guide that highlights the best Android phones on the big four carriers in the US. It would be easy for us to huddle up and create a list of phones we think the public should buy, but we know that there are some great phones out there that we may not necessarily like. You are the public, and we want to make sure your voice is reflected in our back-to-school phone buying guide.

Below you’ll find four polls listing most of the Android phones currently available on the four major US carriers. Vote for the phones you like, and be sure to leave us comment to give us more insight into why you chose a particular phone. The best (and maybe worst) comments will be used in our upcoming back-to-school guide.

Happy voting!
