CyanogenMod Power Widgets to be replaced by a "Quick Access Ribbon"
Aug 26th 2013, 14:34, by Robert Nelson

The folks at CyanogenMod are prepping for some upcoming changes to the power widgets. These have been used for quite some time now and were originally introduced back on the CM7 days. And for those who haven’t been around CyanogenMod for that long — CM7 looks back towards Android 2.3. That aside, the power widgets will be going away in favor of something called the Quick Access Ribbon.

First and foremost, there hasn’t been any timeline given as to when this will happen. For now the CyanogenMod posting talks about how this new code (change) has not been merged, but that it will soon. While this portion will not affect the average end user, there was also talk of how this new system will allow the team to swap more than 3000 lines of code for just 370 lines.

We suspect some users are going to push back against the change, but in an attempt to keep looking on the bright side — it was said that this update will bring a “newer, and more efficient method of toggling your settings.”

“This piece of code will take your existing layout from the QS panel, and render it as a replacement for the soon-to-be-defunct notification power widgets. This is essentially a new view for the QS panel, which means we save ourselves the hassles of managing two distinct sets of features that accomplish the same thing.”

Further details here include talk of how this setup will also allow the CyanogenMod team to take advantage of the dynamic capabilities. Or in other words, this means items such as the Camera tile quick capture ability will remain available. And for those worried, it was made clear that this new ribbon will be configurable.

Bottom line here, some changes are coming to CyanogenMod. The good side here for those tho are against this change — you likely have some time to keep enjoying your current setup. The new code for the Quick Access Ribbon will hit nightlies first for testing.

Samsung Developer Conference opens for registration
Aug 26th 2013, 13:59, by Robert Nelson

Samsung announced their first ever Developer Conference back in July. At the time they provided some key details and did some teasing, however it wasn’t until today that the registration opened. Simply put, if you had been waiting to register for the “major” event that will take place in San Francisco — now is the day to move forward.

The event will begin on October 27th and run through October 29th and Samsung has said this will be a “Samsung-wide, cross product (multi-screen) developer event.” Putting some of the teasing aside and there is a bit more in terms of detail available today. For example, Samsung has said the event will feature more than 40 technical sessions from influencers in mobile, consumer electronics and digital content.

"Samsung is excited to offer developers a single place to learn how to develop, market, and monetize applications and services that may span smartphones, tablets, and televisions," said Dr. WonPyo Hong, President of the Samsung Media Solution Center.

More specifically, Samsung will be offering a first look at new SDKs and tools including the S Pen. They will also be offering a more in depth look at the Samsung Service Platform and services APIs for items to include ChatON, Group Play, Samsung AdHub, Context Aware and “much” more.

Other items of discussion will be best practices for developing Smart TV apps in multi-screen environments, special sessions for B2B customers (KNOX, Enterprise SDK), development opportunities in gaming and cross-platform development in things such as HTML5.

That all being said, registration is open as of today and the price of the event is $299. For that attendees will get access to the keynotes as well as the working sessions and a special developer event that will take place in the evening.

HTC One gets pictured in blue
Aug 26th 2013, 13:25, by Robert Nelson

Verizon finally released the HTC One and while it looked like that could have put the last of the related rumors to rest, we are now getting a look at the handset in blue. Sure, we have seen the blue renders leak in the past but this time around we have an in-the-wild style look. Well, that may be a bit generous a description as this image appears to have come out of the factory.

HTCOne Blue

Regardless though, what we have is a image of the blue HTC One. The handset is obviously incomplete as the display and other goodies are missing, but there is a fairly good look at the blue exterior. The blue looks a bit different as compared to those earlier leaked renders. We suppose there could be some discussion about the color, but given this is just one leaked image we can likely blame that on the lighting conditions or the camera used to snap the picture.

Bottom line here, we are now seeing a non-rendered image of the HTC One in blue. Earlier rumors have suggested the blue HTC One would be heading to Verizon Wireless. Those rumors arrived earlier in the month and were based off a leak by way of an insider. Said insider revealed that Verizon had added an inventory SKU of HTC6500LVWBLU.

Basically, that seems to imply the handset will be coming to Verizon Wireless (VW) in blue (BLU). What would make a bit more sense for Verizon would have been a red HTC One, but as we have already seen that went to another carrier. Aside from a new color — the specs of this still unannounced blue model will remain the same.

Talk of this blue HTC One aside, we are still expecting some HTC announcements in early-September. There has been plenty of chatter about the HTC One Max and that is expected to be announced during IFA. HTC also kicked off the new “Here’s To Change” advertising with Robert Downey Jr. so we suspect more will be coming from that sooner rather than later.
