Devs say Android platform is indeed lucrative, carrier billing to improve things further

Posted: 03 May 2012 03:03 AM PDT

For people who don't have credit cards or are uncomfortable using them for digital transactions, buying things on Google Play can be a rather difficult endeavor, if at all possible. The good news is the Play Store now allows customers to buy things and charge them to their carrier's bills. While initially the purchase was limited only to apps, Google has expanded the options to include the purchasing of music, movie, and books.

For now, the direct carrier billing is available only for selected carriers in the US, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Spain, and the UK. But Google should consider adding more carriers and countries soon, since the new billing option will help app developers expand their market and considerably improve revenue.

Several studies showed that the daily revenue that developers get from Google Play is a fraction from what they get from Apple's App Store. But these estimates are based on broad averages, so they may not necessarily apply to all developers working on the Android platform. Some of them have taken to the web to give their side of the story.

Spry Fox, the developer behind the puzzle game Triple Town, said that, while earning from Google Play lags behind AppStore, the gap is not that big to justify the assessment that Android is a hard platform to monetize. For every dollar that Triple Town earns on iOS, the Android version brings in 67 cents. David Edery, Spry Fox CEO, said that the user bases of the two platforms are similar in size and that Google Play is "a very good source of revenue."

According to Inside Mobile Apps, this opinion was echoed by TinyCo (of Tiny Village fame), which recently made public its revenue distribution in three app stores. For every dollar that Tiny Village earns on iOS, the game dev gets 65 cents on Android.

InsideMobileApps

Another developer that is reporting higher revenues than many analysts estimate is Glu Mobile. The company's senior vice president of sales and marketing Adam Flanders said that the Android platform offers a similar Average Revenue per User (ARPU) to iOS, and the conversion rate on Android is continually on the up. This trend, according to Flanders, can be attributed to the introduction of international carrier billing option to several countries.

Carrier billing has proven to be a great source of revenue for many other Android developers, which are seeing higher conversion rate in countries like Japan and South Korea. Companies like DeNa and Robot Invader, for example, found more success in overseas markets thanks to the carrier billing option.

The combination of releasing free-to-play games and giving customers the ability to make in-app purchases via carrier billing seems to be the key of getting more revenues for some of these developers.

So, folks making money on the Android platform is not as ludicrous as some would have you believe.

ParanoidAndroid ROM review – Galaxy Nexus gets tablified [Video]

Posted: 02 May 2012 11:25 PM PDT

Lucky Samsung Galaxy Nexus owners have plenty of screen real estate to work with. With a whopping 1280×720 resolution, and a sharp 316 pixels per inch (PPI), it's a wonder that Samsung didn't take bit more advantage of the phone's specs. Regardless, being the Google phone has its perks, as developer "drcmda" has constructed a ROM that, with a simple flash, turns your Galaxy Nexus into a tablet/phone hybrid.

About the ROM

"This is NOT just tablet mode", the developer says, "This is an ongoing developer project to make way for a modification that will entirely transform your device, but retain the aesthetics and the experience of your phone." That's right! When running the ParanoidAndroid ROM you will be working with a 4.65" tablet. That means apps, menus, and UI are all in tablet format. Even native apps such as the dialer have been optimized to bear their respective tablet style look. This ROM basically tricks your phone into thinking it's a tablet!

Features

  • Cyanogenmod 9 source code
  • Re-written Trebuchet launcher for tablet mode
  • Butter-smooth performance.
  • 100% functional android standard keyboard
  • Custom Boot animation
  • Fully functional Google Apps package
  • Available for the GSM and CDMA Galaxy Nexus.

Installation is as simple as flashing any other ROM in ClockworkMod recovery just wipe your data, cache, and dalvick cache before flashing. This ROM means business, but you can easily flash another ROM if you happen to not like your hybrid setup.

Video

So, if you're looking to soak up some of that delicious screen space on your Galaxy Nexus, why not turn it into a mini-tablet with the ParanoidAndroid ROM? Let us know your thoughts! Butter smooth people, and bacon tasty!

Google Play Store gift cards: not a bad idea

Posted: 02 May 2012 09:28 PM PDT

Everyone remembers iTunes and the success and impact it had on the music market. It marked one of the first times that people had access to an online library full of almost every song out there. The best part was that most songs cost just $.99.

Today, we are now faced choice from competitors like Zune, a subscription based network that offers unlimited streaming and downloading for a monthly rate. The choices are numerous: we have Napster, Rhapsody, Slacker, Pandora, and Spotify. Not bad if you are a music hound.

Android users have obviously become accustomed to the Google Play Store, an online mobile market where we can grab videos, music and apps at an individual rate.

What Consumers Need

We’ve criticized Google on numerous occasions for the way it handles purchases on Google Play. First of all, substantial swaths of media and apps aren’t available internationally, but we shouldn’t criticize Google for that. Often for media and other streaming services, it’s the older media companies that prefer to keep certain media available within specific geographic zones. Regardless, the Google Play Store really lacks a major payment based objective. We’ve all witnessed gift card kiosks at airports, major franchises, and department store, but why aren’t we seeing a Google Play gift card?

This is one of the smartest ideas in online payment, since you do not have to pay with a credit or debit card, and can simply travel down the street to buy credits.

There are several good reasons why people would go to the ‘trouble’ of purchasing gift cards. Firstly, people care about their credit and their personal identity. Secondly, many people don’t have or can’t have credit cards. For people unable to get a credit card for whatever reason, it’s very convenient, and gives them the opportunity to experience the wonder of (gasp) paid apps! Further to this, gift cards make excellent presents. And honestly, $10 goes mighty far on Google Play, whether its on movies, games or music.

Growing Android Demand

I myself have gotten quite a few iTunes gift cards to redeem. Since I smartened up and got an Android phone, why use iTunes if I can use Google Play to get music directly on my device? On a separate note, I still receive these from the ‘old’ people in my life, because they think all smartphones are the same.

Regardless, gift cards for the Google Play store would be a great idea, because that market is focused on mobile operations without the use of secondary computer.

Competition and Rivalry

With competition further intensifying between Google, Apple, and Amazon, it is only logical that Google release a similar initiative. Perhaps it has to do more with the idea of Google being a digital company, one that opts to rather transact in such a way that is not physical. Regardless, Google should bring some justice to those who are not comfortable using a credit card, or for those who do not have one, or are unable to get one. If Google were to start selling these prepaid cards, this would absolutely change the way they compete against Apple.

Sales would undoubtedly rise in the Play Store. According to Wired.com, "Apple's last fiscal quarter year alone accounted for $1.7 billion in revenue". And Google did not even release their numbers. Is that a sign of loss Google?

Most importantly my ability to give great gifts to my friends would be solved. Think about it Google, just about every other company has one. Why not you? What do you think of possible Google Play Store Gift Cards? What do you have to lose?  I would love to hear your comments and feel free to like us on Facebook and share on Google+ and Twitter.

Fun Android photo apps

Posted: 02 May 2012 09:00 PM PDT

If you love making a serious picture funny or a funny picture hilarious then you’ll love the apps we’ve got for you today. Add a moustache to your mom’s face, or warp your teacher’s face. You can even paste your face on a celebrity’s body for extra laughs.

We’ve put together some of the funniest photo apps that you can find on the Google Play Store to keep you amused and to give personal touches to your photos.

Camera Fun Free

The first app on our list is the Camera Fun Free app. What makes this app fun to use is that you can apply different photo effect lenses to capture your photos. You don’t need to capture a photo then edit it afterwards. What this app gives you is instant editing, because by the time you capture your photo, Camera Fun Free has already applied the effects. All you need to do is switch to different kinds of lenses available in the app. The free version gives you 6 lens effects to choose from and the pro version of the app has 29 lens effects to choose from. So, if you want instant photo effects you better give Camera Fun Free a try.

Paper Camera

Watching cartoons on the television is one thing, but actually seeing the world around you as a cartoon can be extraordinary. Thanks to Paper Camera, you can view the world in a different way. What this app does is that it cartoonizes your photos and you can be your own cartoon character through your camera. Just like Camera Fun Free, this app applies the effect directly to your pictures rather than adding it afterwards. So, once you have switched on your camera, you will see the real stuff turn into cartoon through the lenses. Some of the effects available are cartoon, sketch, comic, half tone, and neon. Check out how you look as a cartoon character with Paper Camera.

Lightbox Photos

If you’ve tried the new Instagram for Android, you’d be interested to know that Lightbox Photos can be a suitable substitute for it. Lightbox Photos lets you edit your photos by applying effects to make them more fun. You can either add post effects to your photo or give it that retro camera look. And if you think you have created a great photo, you can actually share it to your friends via social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr and Foursquare. You can also view your photos online by creating a Lightbox account. One of the great things about Lightbox Photos is that you can publish your own photo blog. The app also works well with other Android photo apps.

LINE camera

If you are the type who wants to add different post photo effects like stamps and frames, then LINE camera is an app that fits your needs. LINE camera allows you to add cool frames, stamps and filters to your photo with over 100 different kinds of frames, 600 stamps, 18 filters, and 156 brushes you can choose from. You will also be able to use brushes and text as stamps, and if you want to add a unique and personal touch, you can design your own stamps. You can create stamps with illustrations and messages to make your photos more fun-looking. Once you have created your fun photo, you can share them through LINE, Facebook, and other social networking sites.

Photo Warp

If you want fun photos that you can laugh at then Photo Warp can give you hours of entertainment. This app is the perfect tool if you want to make fun of people’s faces, or even your own. The classic prank of drawing on someone’s face with a marker can now be matched with the use of this app. You can actually make things look very weird and alien by warping, bending, and distorting the pixels of a photo to your heart’s desire. You can make yourself thinner, fatter, or even make your boobs look bigger. All you need to do is move the cursor and drag around the pixels of the photo. You can open pictures from the app’s gallery and edit them. Once you are done with your funny photos, this app also allows you to share them online so that you and your friends can enjoy a few rounds of laughter.

Camera Illusion

The next fun photo app that we have for you is Camera Illusion. This app is great for quickly editing photos. Take funny pictures and add cool effects, filters and masks to make it look better. This app doesn’t really have much features to brag about; it’s plain photo editing by adding post photo effects but the great thing about Camera Illusion is that it is very powerful. So if you are a pro then you will definitely like using this app because of the great quality it provides. You can get more from this app if you buy the pro version, but if you are a newbie then the free version should do the trick for you.

Doodle Text!

If you like doodling on paper, then you’ll probably love doodling on your Android device with Doodle Text!. This app is not a photo editing app that gives you cool effects, filters, and the other stuff that most photo apps brag about. If you are bored with the conventional way of sending your text message, then you should try this app which allows you to draw your messages on photos. Try sending your partner a new way of saying “I love you.” For people who want to fax a signature, just doodle it and send it as a photo. If pictures say a thousand words, make them say a thousand more with Doodle Text!.

Funny Camera

If you talk about fun photo apps for Android, then you won’t want to miss out on the Funny Camera. This app may be very simple but it packs all the right features to make you laugh. It provides you with the frames and cameras for your perfect funny shot. If you’ve ever wanted to be a great piece of art, replace the Mona Lisa’s face with you own. Leonardo da Vinci would be proud. You can play with lots of frames and cams that the app has for you. Just fit your head to the holes to create fun photos.

Image Faker

Another fun photo app that you should check out is the Image Faker. It’s more or less the same as the Funny Camera app but has more features that you can explore. All you have to do is choose a photo from your gallery, fit it on the frame, and laugh at the funny photos that you can create. You can choose from a lot of predefined pictures in the app. What’s even more fun is that you can create wallpapers, backgrounds, photo montages, illusions, and other cool effects that you can use for your funny pictures. Share the fun with your friends by sharing your photos through MMS and Facebook.

Faces

Last, but not the least, is Faces. If you want to make fun of your faces in an instant you can do it with this app. Add effects like hats, glasses and facial hairs to make your photos more hilarious. Unlike some apps, the effects of this app look very realistic. People actually look like they’re wearing the hat, the glasses or even the beard. You’ll have a grand time fooling friends and family. You can find different kinds of hats, glasses and facial hair to choose from. With Faces, you can create your own disguise in a fun and easy way.

What are your waiting for? Download one, or all, of these fun apps and start exercising your funny bone. They’ll look great on scrap books and make a precious moment even more memorable.

Refurbished Kindle Fire now going for $139, offer ends in just a few hours!

Posted: 02 May 2012 11:17 AM PDT

Amazon's Kindle Fire has truly been a revolutionary device last fall, when it was made available, and still remains arguably the best Android tablet for the money.

Usually going for $200, the Fire is going through a fire sale as we speak (see what I did there?) and is available for just a few more hours for a mere $139. The discounted tablets are a refurbished device, which could put off a couple of prospective buyers, but the 7-incher comes with a full one-year warranty, so you should pretty much get a gadget as good as new.

The Fire is for the second time made available at such a low price, so if you missed out on the first Amazon exclusive deal, there's no excuse for you to not buy the tablet right now! I mean, in the old days, you used to pay over 100 bucks for basic e-readers, so you can't complain about not receiving what you pay for and much more.

There's a 1 GHz dual-core processor powering this little guy, 1 GB of RAM under the hood, a 7-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1024 x 600 pixels resolution, 8 GB of on-board storage, as well as Wi-Fi connectivity, USB 2.0 and microUSB. On top of it all, the Fire comes with one of the coolest ecosystems out there, running a customized and heavily modified version of Android with an integration of Amazon's universe of entertainment.

The clock is ticking and there are just 12 hours left for you to decide, go on Amazon.com and purchase a refurb Kindle Fire. Also, keep in mind that the online retailer's stocks are limited, so they might run out of tablets well before midnight.

On a different front, we have to mention that this new special offer from Amazon might not just be a super cool Mother's Day promotion, but also an indication of a new gadget being released soon. We have known for a while that Amazon is preparing to unveil a couple new tablets this summer, so it's now possible that we’ll see the new Kindle slates up for sale sooner than it was initially rumored.

Are you going to take advantage of today's great deal? Do you already own a Kindle Fire? Are you excited about the possible releases of second-generation Fire tablets? Hit us with a comment and let us know!

Sprint Galaxy Nexus receiving important update, connectivity issues begone!

Posted: 02 May 2012 09:05 AM PDT

The Galaxy Nexus is arguably one of the most popular Android-based smartphones of the past few months, offering a "pure Google experience", a very nice design, and some pretty strong hardware under the hood.

Sprint's own take on the Nexus came a little bit late to the show, but it still managed to sell like hotcakes, as we reported a couple of weeks back. Unfortunately, just days after its official release, the handheld managed to disappoint many of its adopters, coming with a very annoying bug.

Many users experienced problems with connecting the device to Sprint's 3G network, which was a huge slip-up and a major annoyance. Fortunately, the carrier moved really fast and, just days after the bug was reported, they released an update for the Galaxy Nexus.

The FD02 build is automatically pushed out as we speak to Sprint Galaxy Nexuses all over the country, and most of you should have already received the new software package over-the-air. If you haven't been prompted to install an update by now, you need to either get a better Wi-Fi connection, or check for the FD02 build manually in the phone's settings menu.

If this doesn't work either, it means that you're still on the waiting list, so have a little patience and trust Sprint to update your handheld as soon as possible.

The initial feedback seems to be more than positive and most users who have installed the new software build are saying that their connectivity issues are now a thing of the past. The update also comes with a couple of Google Wallet tweaks and the official new Android version is 4.0.4.

While Sprint is to be criticized for having the bug on the Galaxy Nexus in the first place, we can't help but admit that the carrier has moved really fast and has done everything possible to satisfy its users. It’s obvious that Sprint really strives to bring customers the absolute best experience you can have with an Android 4.0 handheld these days.

I hope that you've all got Sprint's update by now and you're finally starting to enjoy playing around with your brand new Nexus. If you haven't or the update is not what you expected, drop us a line in the comments section and maybe the carrier will be listening!

Rumor: HTC One V to hit Bell Canada this week for $299.95 with no contract

Posted: 02 May 2012 08:56 AM PDT

Canadian readers, if you're looking for a decent, elegant, and affordable entry-level Android-based smartphone and you have a tough time deciding what to buy, your problem might just be solved later this week.

The HTC One V is set to hit the Canadian market the day after tomorrow, as we reported a while back, and could be made available in other markets as soon as next week. And while we suspected the handheld to target tech users on a tight budget, we now have a first confirmation of sorts about the actual pricing of the device.

The guys at MobileSyrup, one of our most trusted sources of rumors and leaks in Canada, have managed to get their grubby hands on what they claim to be an screenshot from carrier Bell’s internal management system. According to the picture, the One V will go up in the North for $299.95 with no contract.

That's pretty affordable, considering what this little guy has to offer, and should be more than okay for those of you who want to stay hip and get a new Android smartphone, but not spend an arm and a leg for purchasing it.

On the other hand, I find it a bit strange that the One V has the same price tag with no contract, as well as with a one-year, two years, and three years agreement in the leak. I'm not 100% familiar with how Canadians usually do business, but in the States, as well as in most other countries, carrier branded devices are always cheaper than no-contract phones. Oh, well, I guess it could be a spelling error (or three).

For those of you who've missed the One V's formal introduction a while back, let's say that the phone will sport a 3.7-inch touchscreen with 480 x 800 pixels resolution, will be powered by a single-core 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, and will feature 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of on-board storage, a 5 MP rear-facing camera, and Beats Audio enhancements. The 3.7-incher will run Android 4.0 ICS out of the box with HTC's Sense UI 4.0 on top.

Will you be looking for the One V once it will hit Canadian stores? Is $300 a fair price to pay for HTC's new entry-level phone? Will you be buying this with or without a contract? Let us know in the comments section below!
