Google Play Store now shipping Nexus 7, all should ship within 3 days

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 11:19 AM PDT

Good news folks. We have just been notified that all Google Play Store Nexus 7 pre-orders are shipping now!!! No need to get out the pitchforks because Gamestop didn’t follow the rules. Google has confirmed that pre-orders for their brand new tablet are shipping to all starting today. For more information the phone number and details are after the break.

Google has a phone support line — I’m not sure too many people actually know this. The Play Store has one as well and a few users have just tipped us off (after getting angry that Gamestop was already selling tablets) that the Play Store customer support line’s automated number has also confirmed this news. The Nexus 7 tablet is shipping right now from the Play Store, and all current orders should be shipped within 3 business days.

The support line now has an automated recording confirming the details and you can hear the glorious news yourself if you’d like. Start by calling 1-855-83-NEXUS (63987). They specifically mention 3 business days. So that means some could possibly be waiting til Tuesday before they even ship, but at least we all now have a firm date to look forward to.

Let us know if/when your order ships by dropping us a comment below!

– Thanks Stev1, and Tim!

Nexus 7 shipping now – pickup available from Gamestop

Posted: 13 Jul 2012 09:43 AM PDT

We are still confused with this bizarre Google Nexus 7 tablet release, but now have multiple confirmations that the device is being shipped from multiple channels across the US and UK. Here in the US Gamestop and Staples are both not able to “sell” the tablet today, but are allowing those who pre-ordered to head down to a store and pickup the tablet, and Ebuyer in the UK shipped multiple out yesterday, and they are arriving this very moment.

Reports are coming in from multiple channels all confirming that the tablet is being shipped today. Although those who pre-ordered from Google themselves still seem to be waiting for a “shipped” confirmation. A few tips suggests Google is charging pre-orders now and getting ready, but that’s all we’ve heard. GottaBeMobile confirmed themselves with Gamestop that they are available in-store right now, but only for those who’ve pre-ordered.

Apparently you can’t walk in and buy one just yet, as this is only for those who ordered early. Most likely a few are still falling through the cracks as Droid-Life reported at least one customer walked out a happy camper. Then of course for you in the UK the Nexus 7 is shipping from multiple outlets there as well. EBuyer started shipping tablets yesterday, and the picture above is from one of their customers. Basically multiple outlets in both the US, UK, and other areas are all starting distribution on the Nexus 7 tablet. For such an amazing product I sure wish the launch would be going a little smoother, but sadly it isn’t.

If you’ve already received your Nexus 7 be sure to drop us any info available in the comment section below. We’d all love to hear where it came from. Good luck and happy hunting guys. I’d be heading to my nearest Staples or Gamestop right about now.

AT&T Galaxy S III Red Limited Edition hits stores July 29

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 04:19 PM PDT

To be honest, a limited edition smartphone coming with any sort of red color you’d expect to arrive on Verizon Wireless since everyone knows they are “Big Red.” However AT&T managed to snag the exclusive Garnet Red flavor of Samsung’s Galaxy S III smartphone, and have just announced pre-orders start on Sunday the 15th.

Just like the standard Galaxy S III from AT&T (Reviewed here) the Garnet Red will be priced exactly like their pebble blue and white models which is $199 for 16GB, and they didn’t mention a 32GB version. When AT&T announced pre-orders for their Galaxy S III back in early June they tipped us off about the limited edition color, but this is the first they’ve mentioned it since. For those looking to break out of the mold and be a bit different, you can get it in stores come July 29th.

AT&T confirmed both the pre-order date and in-store availability earlier today over on their AT&T Blog, so if you’re interested you’ll want to stay tuned for pre-order details come Sunday. The Garnet Red model will rock the same 4.8-inch 720p HD display, 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor, 2GB of RAM, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and AT&T 4G LTE that we’ve all come to love.

Would you buy the red version from AT&T, or do you like the white or blue version?

HTC Vertex HD tablet leaks with Tegra 3 quad-core

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 03:35 PM PDT

Some HTC news is starting to pour in this evening, and it all has to do with powerful quad-core processors too. Earlier today we reported HTC was working on another AT&T 4G LTE device only it would feature a a 1.7 GHz quad-core processor, and now new reports are surfacing regarding a new tablet. Being called the HTC Vertex HD this 10.1-inch quad-core tablet could be the real deal.

After a few very sub-par tries in the tablet world HTC has been rather quite and working on their smartphones. After a new HTC tablet was teased yesterday with some “unique” features we are now seeing benchmark results that confirms the talk. We have a feeling HTC will be bringing a powerful tablet to market to take on the still delayed Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet.

The 10-inch tablet appears to be called the HTC Vertex, runs on Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich, and is powered by a 1.3 GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor. The details are light and this could just be a prototype but we are seeing HTC Beats Audio drivers, a 2 megapixel rear camera, and 1.3 front shooter. HTC’s tablets haven’t fared well in the past so hopefully this will mark a change and new direction for HTC. We’ll probably be hearing more on this tablet soon so stay tuned.

Verizon Galaxy S III WiFi Notification Bug won’t go away

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 03:15 PM PDT

After spending some time with both the new HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE, and more recently the flagship Samsung Galaxy S III we are having a few issues and surely aren’t alone. We’ve received multiple tips on this ongoing and out of control WiFi notification alert that simply can’t be disabled. Between all the early adopters who pre-ordered, and early review units on the Galaxy S III we’ve found that not only can this not be disabled, but it’s causing disconnect problems with daily usage too.

Verizon’s version of the Samsung Galaxy S III has a feature that gives you the option to be notified if there’s a nearby Wi-fi network, as do the other carrier versions. A convenient feature indeed. The problem here is Verizon doesn’t give you a way to turn this off, and you’re stuck with an annoying pop-up notification almost all the time. We aren’t just being picky either because this issue gets worse.

No matter what, whenever the phone finds a WiFi network, you’ll be notified. You do however get 3 options as shown above, but they only allow you to attempt to connect, to select “always” connect, or to say no and remind you later. Absent is that much needed “never” option. To make matters worse if you select the option to “always connect” to open WiFi hotspots it will connect just as it should, but here’s where the annoyance becomes an actual problem. If you select always connect yet the phone doesn’t know the password, the device disables your data connection while trying to connect and once it fails the data is not re-enabled. You’ll still get phone calls but all data is stopped until you notice the problem. The Verizon Galaxy S III will just be running in circles looking for an open WiFi connection.

Screenshot_2012-07-12-14-45-35 Screen Shot 2012-07-12 at 3.00.30 PM Screen Shot 2012-07-12 at 3.01.07 PM

Now this makes sense because the more people using WiFi networks instead of Verizon’s data the better — for them and us — but to not give us any reasonable options is quite frustrating. If Verizon constantly bothers us to turn WiFi on, we probably will when given the chance. The fact that AT&T’s version of the Galaxy S III nicely notifies users in the dropdown instead of always popping up, and doesn’t disable your data connection makes this a problem exclusive to Verizon.

We’ve reached out to both Samsung and Verizon who are now investigating this issue, and we’ll be sure to update once we hear anything back. The idea behind it is a good one, but at least give us some options instead of an always nagging popup notification. For all those who’ve received their Galaxy S III on Verizon, how is this effecting you? Have you experiencing the same pains?

Ouya game console soars past $4m in funding, Pandora creator warns of failure

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 02:29 PM PDT

Whether you love or hate the idea of an Android-based gaming console, Ouya is becoming pretty hard to ignore. Earlier today it flew past $4 million in total pledges, just a few days after the Kickstarter campaign launched. There are obviously a lot of people out there who are intrigued by such a project, but there seems to be just as many who don’t think Ouya will be a success.

One such person Craig Rothwell, who some of you may remember as one of the people responsible for the open source handheld Pandora. Pandora didn’t succeed like Rothwell was hoping it would, and today he told Pocket Gamer that Ouya may be doomed to fail before it even leaves the gate:

My feelings are that at that price – and remember you have to take off the Kickstarter fees, which brings the console and touchpad-equipped controller in at less than $99 – they will be making a loss on each unit sold.

But selling a console at a loss is certainly nothing new. Microsoft and Sony have been doing it with the Xbox 360 and PS3 for most of this generation, instead making money from developer fees. Rothwell also warns that Ouya’s in trouble there too, as the manufacturers are asking for a 30% cut in order to release games for the console. Since that 30% is more or less the industry standard, Rothwell says there’s no incentive to produce games for Ouya’s smaller market when they could be making games for other devices with a larger following.

With this literal overnight success, Ouya now has a lot to think about. The group has 27 days left before they can received their money and get to work, and in the meantime, pledges are still coming in at a pretty astounding rate. A lot of people are trusting that Ouya can put out an Android console with staying power, but unfortunately we won’t know if it can until a long time after the Kickstarter wraps up. Let’s just hope that the folks at Ouya thought this through completely before jumping head first into the crowdfunding game!

HTC 1.7 GHz quad-core 4G LTE phone appears – headed for AT&T

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 01:36 PM PDT

HTC impressed everyone in the Android world back in February when they announced their brand new HTC One banded devices like the One X, One S, and the budget friendly One V. AT&T quickly jumped on the flagship HTC One X with it’s 4.7-inch display, Android 4.0 ICS, and a quad-core processor. Sadly for their 4G LTE rollout plans they ended up switching to a dual-core processor instead. Today however a brand new HTC One phone was spotted with some mighty impressive specs.

Today the folks from PocketNow have stumbled onto some new benchmark tests being ran by the guys at HTC. This unknown device is rocking an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor only it is boosted to 1.7 GHz and also appears to rock AT&T 4G LTE. We knew NVIDIA was hard at work getting Tegra 3 to also support 4G LTE radios, but it appears they are now reaching the final testing phase. This is good news for NVIDIA.

The details are light on this one but according to GLBenchmark HTC has a new phone the PM63100 with a codename listed as “Evitare UL” which is similar for the codename of HTC’s One XL that later became AT&T’s One X. The Evitare is running NVIDIA’s quad-core at 1.7 GHz and the same 1280 x 720p HD display. There’s no way to figure out the actual screen size at the moment, and testing is being done on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

It looks like HTC and AT&T may be preparing a quad-core 4G LTE smartphone to arrive sometime here in Q3 and hopefully running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean instead. Back in May NVIDIA’s Icera LTE modem was cleared to run on AT&T, but was expected to not arrive until next year. We’ll keep our ears open for more details on this mystery device and update once we know anything more.

Angry Birds creators new game Amazing Alex hits the Play Store

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 01:06 PM PDT

In case you haven’t heard, Rovio Mobile is wandering into other aspects of gaming and leaving the flying birds and angry pigs behind. Today they’ve released their first game without those Angry Birds and it’s called Amazing Alex. With a similar physics-based gameplay this puzzle game has some huge potential, although I doubt we’ll see Amazing Alex plush toys for sale like we do those Angry Birds — but who knows.

Available right this minute in the Google Play Store is their all new game. Just like Angry Birds Space Rovio is offering three different versions. A free ad-supported version, the regular paid $0.99, as well as an HD version for $2.99, although we are hearing the HD flavor doesn’t appear to be any different. I’d opt for that $0.99 version of the game if I was you — who wants ads?

more1 more cdEXLjceXfwXyGSioupK6OVnK9CYoyPUIwQREb5AcGlpurWfZ4rzbnUmuabNdD1qPw

Just like many physics-based puzzler games Amazing Alex features a similar gameplay to the popular game Apparatus, where users must move static and moving objects and combine moves until you complete the level or task at hand. The first few levels act as a guide as Rovio shows you how to place static elements throughout the level, or you can just dive right in and learn on the go. Get those objects in place and start a few chain reactions to see if you can complete the level, and eventually beat the game. Be prepared to spend countless hours with Amazing Alex and let us know what you think in the comments below.

AT&T and Motorola’s latest venture has arrived here on the Android Community doorstep. We are talking about the Motorola Atrix HD with AT&T 4G LTE. Unlike the preview two Atrix devices running on HSPA+ “faux 4G” the Atrix gets full speed LTE to keep things speedy. There’s tons to talk about other than the LTE with the Atrix HD though. Such as no capacitive touch buttons, and out of the box runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich — no waiting for an update. Head down past the break for our hands-on video and a few quick pictures.

The Motorola Atrix HD marks an important milestone for both Motorola and AT&T. This is the first Motorola device now that Google has control of the reigns after they bought out Motorola Mobility. This is also the first Motorola phone to ship in the USA out of the box running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and sporting no buttons. Everything is handled on-screen. Just like the Galaxy Nexus the Atrix HD has on-screen navigation keys using up part of that 4.5-inch Colorboost HD display. Let’s talk specs:

The Atrix HD is a pretty impressive all around device, and the only area other competitors beat it are the screen size. It runs on the same 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor as the HTC One X (AT&T) and the Galaxy S III in the US. The difference here is a smaller screen and it only comes with 1GB of RAM. We have a 4.5-inch 1280 x 720 full HD Colorboost display with an amazingly vivid and crisp 330 PPI (pixels per inch) that beats the iPhone Retina display and more. It comes with 8GB of internal storage but only about 5GB is usable, but they’ve added a micro-SD slot for extra storage options.

So far Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich runs extremely smooth and fluid. It doesn’t have Jelly Bean‘s “buttery” smoothness yet but that update will come eventually. The Atrix HD isn’t as thin as the RAZR, coming in at 8.4mm at the thinnest point, but it still relatively sleek while remaining sturdy with the Kevlar coating on back. The slight changes to ICS seem pretty minimal from our short time with the device, but clearly you can tell this stems from Moto Blur. We’ll reserve our judgement for a final review coming early next week.

For now you’ll want to check out our unboxing and hands-on video below of the all new AT&T 4G LTE powered Motorola Atrix HD as we give the hardware and software a quick tour, then enjoy the hands-on pictures and speedtest provided below. If you have any questions (other than the locked bootloader) feel free to drop us a comment and we’ll try to add them into our full review. So far our initial impressions are better than I thought they’d be, and it feels like a great blend between the Atrix 2 and the DROID RAZR. It will be available from AT&T Sunday July 15th, for just $99. Stay tuned!

Galaxy Nexus once again in stock at Google Play Store

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 12:05 PM PDT

If you’re one of the many who has been waiting patiently to get your hands on a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, then we’ve got good news for you. The Galaxy Nexus is listed as being “in stock” over at the Google Play Store once more! The Galaxy Nexus was taken down from the store completely after Apple successfully filed a preliminary injunction that saw the Galaxy Nexus banned from sale in the US. When a 9th Circuit Court temporarily overturned the ban, the Galaxy Nexus popped back up on the Google Play Store, but this time it had an estimated delivery time of 1-2 weeks, suggesting that the Galaxy Nexus wasn’t actually in stock.

Now, we’re happy to say that we can put that whole episode behind us (at least for the moment, anyway). The Galaxy Nexus is officially in stock again at the Google Play Store with an estimated delivery in 3-5 business days. Feels pretty good to see those two little words up on the listing once more, doesn’t it?

Now that the Galaxy Nexus is available for sale once more, it will likely get the OTA update to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean that solves Apple’s issues with the device. This whole thing between Apple, Google, and Samsung isn’t quite over yet, but so long as the update to 4.1.1 does what it’s intended to do, it should be smooth sailing from here on out for the Galaxy Nexus.
