Why isn’t anyone selling Android devices that are already rooted and flashed with a custom ROM?

Posted: 01 Oct 2012 01:49 AM PDT

Many years ago, in what feels like another lifetime, I was a hardcore PC gamer. My computer weighed more than my girlfriend, it sounded like a Boeing 747, but I didn’t care because I built it with my own hands. Now just because I decided to build my own PC to play videogames, that doen’t meant I thought everyone else should have done the same thing. Lots of people opt to buy systems from Alienware, Voodoo, Dell, and several other boutique gaming companies. Those of use who knew how to build computers laughed at how over priced those pre-built systems cost, but at the same time we understood that one doesn’t need to know how to route cables under a motherboard tray to enjoy an all night Unreal Tournament gaming session.

Which brings us to Android. You and I know that rooting our phones and flashing them with a custom ROM can provide an experience that’s far better than what the original manufacturer or operator intended, but what about people who don’t want to go through that? Put yourself in the shoes of a person who isn’t tech savvy. They need to search for a ROM, follow a 20 step process that was written in a forum post somewhere, said forum post comes with multiple warnings about breaking their device, and to top it all off when they ask for “help” they’re often just pointed back to that “easy” 20 step process.

People shouldn’t need to know how to build a computer to enjoy videogames, and similarly people shouldn’t need to know how to flash a ROM to enjoy the most that their smartphone can offer. So I want to find out, why isn’t there a company out there that sells people devices that are already rooted and flashed with CyanogenMod or MIUI or something else?

These “pre-pimped” phones would cost maybe 50 Euros more than a retail device, but they’ll be that much better because they’ll ship without any skins, they’ll probably run the latest version of Android, and they’ll be backed by a real business instead of a couple anonymous forum members who may or may not prove useful should something go wrong.

Update: One of our readers, Dave Moehle, sent me a link to a story about a man in Houston, Texas who does exactly what I described in the article above. He charges $30 for rooting/flashing. That’s more than fair!

Apple & Samsung dominate: Japan’s electronics market becoming harder to survive in

Posted: 01 Oct 2012 01:05 AM PDT

Innovation is a tough thing. In the electronics market, it’s pretty unforgiving if you can’t do it. Just ask Sony, Panasonic, and Sharp, once kings of the U.S and Japanese markets. But today, things are different as Apple and Samsung continue to undercut each other in the court and the showroom.

As an example of the peril some of the consumer electronics are experiencing, Sharp recently reported plans to slash nearly one-fifth of its workforce. When all you make is wide-screen televisions and coffeemakers, it’s hard to compete with the big boys. But that’s not an entirely honest statement. Diversification of product lines did its job for these companies for many years; the problem now is innovation, and in a word, that means being able to turn cutting-edge technology into usable technology.

Sony, for instance, has gotten into the DSLR market but hasn’t achieved the success they would have liked. They haven’t made a profit in four years. Why? Because Korean companies are more effective at using the technology they either own through patent or, in some cases, steal from each other, to make their DSLR cameras better. In other words, more usable and cheap. Consumers don’t care about the market strength of Japanese companies, they want quality but not at a premium price. LG and Samsung, even Apple, have met market demand and done so in a beautiful fashion.

Said Michael Gartenberg, an industry analyst at Gartner, a technology research company:

“In the past there was a huge gap between the best of breed and second best. Now, maybe there's still a small gap between a Sony high-definition screen and an LG screen, but most consumers can't see it. And if most consumers can't see it, it's not there. Japanese companies have been too busy defending old business models that the world simply bypassed."

Rumor: Next Nexus device to be announced in October, runs Android 4.2

Posted: 01 Oct 2012 12:26 AM PDT

In less than three weeks, Google’s current Nexus phone, the Galaxy Nexus, is going to turn one year old. That means we’re due for an upgrade. Back in May, The Wall Street Journal said that we’re going to see multiple Nexus smartphones launched during the holiday shopping season, but that rumor is now being challenged. According to Android and Me, Google is going to announce just one new Nexus phone this month. And the next version of Android, allegedly called Key Lime Pie, isn’t going to be version 5.0, but instead 4.2. Their server logs already show several hits from a device running Android 4.2, and while it’s easy enough to fake Android version numbers, we don’t think someone would go through all that trouble just to punk the Android community.

What do we know about this next Nexus? The three sources who spoke to Android and Me say the phone has already leaked. That could mean the Galaxy Nexus II, but it could also mean the LG Optimus G.

What do we at Android Authority think about all this? Our gut says that the next Nexus will be a minor update to the Galaxy Nexus. The next “major” version of Android will likely be shown off early next year because that’s when we can expect to see next generation hardware. By “next generation” we mean new chips that use ARM’s Cortex A15 processor such as the Texas Instruments OMAP 5. Qualcomm’s quad core Snapdragon S4 is going to start shipping in phones this month, but not in any meaningful quantities. It’s going to take a while for production to ramp up, so it makes sense for Google to host a major event in 2013 instead of this year.

Remember the first Nexus, the Nexus One? It was announced in early January. We could see a repeat of that sort of timing, and maybe that’s when Google will unveil this so called “portfolio” of Nexus smartphones.

Startup LightSquared files with FCC, gets banned because of GPS interference

Posted: 01 Oct 2012 12:23 AM PDT

smartphone gps hack

LightSquared, the company that aims to be the United States’ 5th nationwide wireless carrier, is yet again facing off with the government over proposed engineering solutions that interfere with GPS signals. The government has said it will do everything in its power to bar the network from competing on US territory.

This comes about because the government uses GPS; the military and the aviation industry to guide airplanes and missiles. This, of course, is in addition to consumer navigation devices which are used nationwide. What LightSquared proposes to do is take one 5MHz band that it already uses for its satellite service (at 1670-1675MHz) and combine that with the next band up (1675-1680MHz), which is also used for federal purposes including NOAA weather balloons.

But the opposition doesn’t stop there. LightSquared wants to sell wireless on a wholesale basis; this could potentially upset the apple cart and add many more rivals to the big 4: Big Red, Sprint, AT&T, and T-mobile. By doing so, LS thinks it can offer better service with LTE, while delivering value at a lower cost. In January 2011, the FCC did give LightSquared conditional approval to build a land-based mobile data network using LTE. The approval said LightSquared could sell the cellular service without a satellite component, which opened up much bigger market opportunities for the company.

The bottom line is this: the FCC says its hands are tied. “There is no practical way to mitigate potential interference at this time.” said Tammy Sun, a spokeswoman for the FCC. LightSquared disagrees, vehemently. ”The NTIA’s recommendation relied on the flawed conclusions … about LightSquared’s potential impact on GPS, says a company spokeswoman.

Jeff Carlisle, head of LightSquared’s regulatory affairs, wrote in a blog post this week:

“GPS in America has become ‘too big to fail… Like Wall Street, the manufacturers of GPS devices have spent years profiting off of vulnerable technology and are now seeking protection from the government instead of implementing the necessary reforms.”

Best new Android games (late September edition)

Posted: 30 Sep 2012 02:00 PM PDT

“Game over” is a non-existent term in Android game developers’ books.  Day in and day out, new Android games sprout in the fertile soil of the garden known as the Google Play Store.  Popular games today started as new games, and went on to become well-liked and well-recommended.

We don’t know what will become, months from now, of the new Android games that we feature in this late September edition of our twice-a-month roundup of the best new Android games.  But, we do know they’re worth checking out.  We find these games carrying great potential.  Do you think so, too?

There’s only one way to find out: try these games.  And, have fun!

The Bard’s Tale

Follow someone’s quest to become a hero and to seek more “coins and cleavage” in The Bard’s Tale. This game is based on the classic that was played on the Playstation 2, the Xbox, iOS, and it has finally landed in the bountiful land of Android. This is an epic 3D RPG game that lets you play the role of The Bard as he takes his journey to fulfill quests and find more gold and women. The game also features a humorous script that will set your heart laughing for hours while playing.

Just like usual RPG games, you’re allowed to customize your character. You can also choose a talent for The Bard. The game also features various weapons and accessories. Let’s not forget about the gorgeous women. The game features talking and interacting non-player-characters (NPC) that enhance the game experience. At some point, you can even find your dog companion and train it to bite your enemies’ sorry arses.

The Bard’s Tale can be downloaded for about US$6.00 from the Google Play Store. Once you download the game, you will need to download additional files, depending on the quality of the game. For Tegra-powered devices, you can download the HD version of this game for an additional file size of about 3.5 GB.

Zombie Frontier

The virus has spread all over the city, turning all the people into rotting zombies. You are the only survivor and you must keep yourself alive in the Zombie Frontier game. This is a first-person shooting (FPS) defense game.

Your primary task is to shoot zombies before they come near you. Sounds easy, right? But, what if there are a lot of zombies coming your way, hungry for your human flesh? You will face different zombies in the game. There is a zombie that moves faster than the others and another zombie that instantly jumps to your position.

To aid you in your zombie-killing quest, the game also has a shop where you can buy additional weapons and equipment. Use your equipment wisely because you can only buy your medical kits and grenades using gold points. If you run out of money and gold points, the shop lets you convert your real money for additional game money and gold points.

You can download the Zombie Frontier for free from the Google Play Store. The game will ask for your permission if you want to receive news or game promos on your notification bar. Ads will also rarely appear on the bottom left portion of the screen.

Fort Courage

Enter the rich and vibrant imaginations of two kids and fight against waves of the undead, robots, dinosaurs, and a lot more in Fort Courage. This is a fun and addicting defense game for Tegra-powered devices.

The game lets you control two players. One uses a variety of guns to shoot enemies from a distance. You will only need to tap on the ground to aim and shoot.

The other player uses bombs and grenades. You will need to tap on player 2 and drag it to where you want to aim your bomb. The game also has a shop where you can buy new weapons and upgrades. You can buy new items by using the gold coins you earn after each round. You can also convert your real money to gold coins.

The Fort Courage game also features 6 different worlds. In each world, you will battle different monsters. You will face the undead, fight a robotic army, go back in time and face dinosaurs, and much more. You will also fight bosses in each world.

The ads-free Fort Courage can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store. To handle the high definition display and graphics, you will need a Tegra-powered device.

The Curse

You find a magical and mysterious book. Curious of its contents, you open it, releasing the Mannequin that has been trapped inside the book for years. You must break The Curse by solving puzzles inside the book, stop the Mannequin, and seal him back inside.

The book that you have opened is like a book of various puzzles. Your primary task is to solve all the puzzles in the book so you can lock the Mannequin back up. You will solve riddles, Sudoku puzzles, light up lights at the same time, slide blocks, and much more.

Solving puzzles will allow you to earn clogs which you will need to unlock the final puzzle. If you’re stuck with a puzzle, you can use hints to help you solve it. But, you will need to use hints wisely because they won’t be offered for free.

Ads-free, The Curse can be downloaded for about a dollar from the Google Play Store.

Bad Piggies

We all know the round little piggies that have always been bullied by those little birds. This time, Rovio has made another game that shines the spotlight on those green pigs. Bad Piggies is a puzzle game that lets you play with the pigs. No more bird-squashing actions in this game. Instead, it’s time to build some machines to help the piggies accomplish their goals.

The primary goal of this game is to help the green pig reach a certain point on a stage. But, in order to do that, you will need to build some sort of vehicle. You will be able to construct a mini cart, a cart propelled with an electric fan, or even a wooden helicopter. Each stage will also have a certain goal. For instance, a goal to reach the end point without using a fan, or reach the finish line within a certain time limit.

Bad Piggies can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store. It has ads popping in the upper-right portion of the main menu screen. Ads will disappear when you start the game. The game also has a high-definition version to accommodate those devices with HD screen.

Barnes & Noble drops the price of the Nook Glowlight to $119

Posted: 30 Sep 2012 01:01 PM PDT

With Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite starting to ship tomorrow, Barnes & Noble has raised the stakes by dropping the price of its Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight from $139 to $119.

While originally it was thought that it was only certain retailers like Target and Walmart dropping the price of the Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight, Barnes & Noble’s own listing for the e-reader is now showing the price as $119.

Dropping the price of the Nook Glowlight brings it to exactly the price of the lowest-tier Kindle Paperwhite, but there’s one key difference: the Nook doesn’t show you ads. The Kindle Paperwhite, of course, does, though Amazon refers to them as “special offers.”

New competition or not, it isn’t likely that Amazon is worried. The demand for the Kindle Paperwhite is so great that Amazon can’t actually keep up. Though it launches tomorrow, Amazon is displaying a notice that the Paperwhite won’t ship until October 22 for anyone buying it now.

While the Kindle Paperwhite is on a lot of wish lists, it isn’t like we’re talking about high-end tablets with competing specs. Both the Nook Glowlight and the Kindle Paperwhite are simple e-readers. While they certainly have differences, such as the Kindle Paperwhite’s front-lit screen, this isn’t a case where one device is clearly outclassed by the other.

The biggest thing to consider when buying an e-reader is which company’s store you prefer for content, so most buyers of either device probably already have their mind made up. The shipping delays Amazon is experiencing will probably end up earning some extra sales of the Nook Glowlight for Barnes & Noble, but it isn’t very likely that we’ll see droves of people jumping ship from Amazon.

Do you have a Kindle Paperwhite on the way, or are you going to opt for a Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight instead? Do you simply use your phone or tablet for your e-reading needs?

More Samsung Galaxy Note 2 features revealed [video]

Posted: 30 Sep 2012 12:19 PM PDT

In a video released for the Korean launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, we get to see even more cool features packed into a phone that already had a lot of people excited.

While we have already seen a lot of what the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, we haven’t seen everything yet. In the video a new feature was shown off: multi-window split screen support.

A list of apps is displayed either vertically or horizontally on the screen, and these apps can be dragged and dropped from the list to open a new window above or below the app that is already running. The video shows this feature being used to take notes while watching a YouTube video, open the messaging app while on Facebook, and use video chat while viewing a report in image form.

Other features are shown off as well, and the S Pen is given a lot of screen time, previewing videos and emails by hovering over them. One impressive moment shows a video being popped out of the video app,  resized and dragged around the screen on top of the web browser.

It’s important to note that all the features shown in the video are for the Korean model of the Galaxy Note 2, but it isn’t likely that Samsung would strip such an impressive feature from the phone when it is released elsewhere.

While the video was released for the Korean launch, it is in English, and is definitely worth watching. You can check it out below. If you just want to skip to the new features, start at around two minutes in.

If you were already excited for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, it is very likely that you are even more excited now.  If you’re still not impressed, another video on YouTube shows some of the features in the video off in a hands-on demo where they work just as well.

What do you think of the features shown off in the video? Are you planning to buy a Galaxy Note 2?

Last day to get $25 Google Play Store credit with Nexus 7 purchase

Posted: 30 Sep 2012 11:07 AM PDT

If you want to buy a Nexus 7 from Google but haven’t gotten around to doing it, today is a good day to finally pull the trigger. After today, customers who buy the Nexus 7 will no longer get $25 of credit in the Google Play Store along with their purchase.

Those who buy a Nexus 7 today will get $25 of credit toward Google Play Store purchases and an entire year to spend it. If you buy it after today, you’re still getting a cool new tablet, but no free apps to run on it. If you’re still on the fence and you like free things, it’s probably time to buy one.

If you have been eyeing the Nexus 7 for a while, chances are good that you might know the specs, but just in case, here is a refresher. The Nexus 7 includes a 1.3 GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor, 1 GB of RAM, either 8 or 16 GB of internal storage, a 4325 mAh battery, 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera and a 7-inch HD IPS display at 1280 x 800 and 216 ppi.

The tablet runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and, being a Nexus device, will receive frequent updates. For gadget fans, its nice to know that you won’t be stuck running a dated version of Android while other devices are seeing updates.

The Nexus 7 will cost you $199 for the 8 GB version, and $249 for the 16 GB version. Both devices are for sale in the Google Play Store.

Are you finally going to buy a Nexus 7 today? If not, have you already got one? What did you get with your Nexus 7 Play Store credit?

MetroPCS looking for Sprint, T-Mobile, or Dish to buy them out

Posted: 30 Sep 2012 10:30 AM PDT

MetroPCS
MetroPCS is the 6th largest mobile carrier in the United States. It’s also looking to get bought out. Amid rising stock prices and a growing user base, MetroPCS is looking to send their customers to potentially greener pastures. Nothing concrete has been worked out yet. However, word is that Sprint, T-Mobile, and Dish are potential buyers.

It’s quite a range of potential buyers. Of the three, T-Mobile makes the least sense. They operate on a GSM network and MetroPCS uses CDMA. This means that even if T-Mobile bought MetroPCS, it really couldn’t do much with it. The most probably reason is MetroPCS has several LTE sites and T-Mobile may want them.

Sprint and Dish buyouts make much more sense. Sprint is the 2nd largest CDMA network in the United States behind only Verizon. MetroPCS has just under 10 million subscribers and that could help Sprint close the gap with Verizon at least a little bit. Additionally, MetroPCS 4G LTe is in a number of cities that Sprint is not and could help them expand their 4G network faster. Aside from 4G, Sprint could also strengthen its coverage map and gain more of a foothold in prepaid customers.

The most interesting case is the Dish Network. It would not be the first time there was a mobile service that also provided cable service. It’s no secret that Dish has had an above average interest in the mobile world. MetroPCS would be an excellent base for them to start their own network. This would put them in direct competition with carriers like AT&T, which also provide cable, internet, and mobile.

MetroPCS Dish

Will MetroPCS actually sell out?

If they can find the right buyer and the right price, there’s no reason to believe they wouldn’t. MetroPCS is a good carrier in their own right. However, given their size, they can fill a lot of roles in other companies. They would augment Sprint’s network nicely. They would be an excellent base from which Dish can stage their mobile efforts. There’s probably even something productive T-Mobile could do with them.

If any of these companies do buy MetroPCS, which one do you think it will be? Let us know your thoughts!

CyanogenMod says goodbye to faithful ROM Manager in favor of built in updates

Posted: 30 Sep 2012 10:00 AM PDT

CyanogenMod ROM Manager
For years, ROM Manager was the de facto standard of getting CyanogenMod updates. The familiar orange gear with the top hat has been a staple of the CyanogenMod app drawer for a very long time. However, the CyanogenMod team has opted to go with its own update system.

Many people may be wondering why. It’s perfectly natural, as ROM Manager has been around as long as single-core 1GHz processors. It’s really like an old friend. According to Android Police, it is because CyanogenMod is completely open source and ROM Manager is not. This means that ROM Manager clashes with the ideals of CyanogenMod.

Thus, the CyanogenMod team has coded their own update system. It’s pretty simple, actually. It’s built right into CyanogenMod so ROM users will be able to use it like any other system setting. They can set the schedule to check for updates as frequently as one hour to as far off as monthly. They can also check for various types of builds. These include Nightlies, Monthlies, and stable builds both new and old.

It gets its roots from the last time the CM team used a proprietary updater. That was back in CyanogenMod 6. It has been updated and adapted to work in CyanogenMod 9 and 10. When invoked, the new update system will check and pull updates directly from get.cm.

In terms of feng shui, the new updater is definitely an improvement. It gathers the updates you want straight from the source when you want it to. While we all love ROM Manager, it wasn’t that customizable when it came to updates.

CyanogenMod

So what’s to become of ROM Manager?

Worry not fans of ROM Manager. Koushik Dutta, the developer behind ClockworkMod recovery and ROM Manager, has shown zero indication that ROM Manager won’t continue as normal. Even if it isn’t part of CyanogenMod anymore, users far and wide still use it for installing ClockworkMod recovery. Its functions for downloading ROMs and checking for updates should remain unhindered. This functionality will continue as will its presence in the Google Play Store.

Almost all rooted users know what CyanogenMod is and all CyanogenMod users know what ROM Manager is. It’s a relationship we hate to see come to and end. Thankfully it was a peaceful separation and not an ugly divorce. We should get no interruption in greatness from either CyanogenMod or ROM Manager.

The new update system hasn’t made its way into nightly builds yet. However, that should be coming any time now. Are you going to miss ROM Manager? Or is out with the old and in with the new? Let us know your thoughts.
