Focal lands in the Play Store following CyanogenMod departure

As you may have read, CyanogenMod’s camera app, Focal, was recently removed after the company was incorporated. Focal lead developer Guillaume Lesniak (Xplodwild) is believed to have left due to differences between himself and the newly formed company. Lesniak was left with just a few options on what to do with his creation.

The app has already found a new home late on Saturday night. The camera app made its way to the Google Play Store and with it comes the “beta” name; therefore, users can expect the occasional hiccup here and there.

Focal is a full featured camera app that brings suchs tools as automatic picture enhancement (auto-awesome). Depending on your device, you might also get color adjustments, HDR, and manual light measure points. There is even a quick shot mode, allowing you tap anywhere on the screen to take a picture just like the Moto X.

Features

  • A photo and video mode, supporting many features (burst mode, timer mode, scene mode, shutter speed on Sony devices, …)
  • A panorama mode, currently semi-broken
  • A PicSphere mode, open-source replacement of Google’s PhotoSphere, to do 360° sphere shots
  • A review drawer, by sliding from the top of the screen (in portrait). It shows your latest pictures.

TalkAndroid Weekly Recap for September 16 – September 22, 2013

TalkAndroid_Weekly_Recap

We had another busy week at TalkAndroid so here’s a recap of all the top stories. The biggest “we didn’t see this coming” news of the week had to be CyanogenMod forming a corporation called Cyanogen. It also looks like a partnership with Oppo is going to be unveiled this week. Sprint decided to join the early upgrade party with “One Up”, and speaking of carriers, what on earth is Verizon thinking not activating the Nexus 7 LTE edition? The iPhone 5S is now available so Tim Cook took the opportunity to take some jabs at Android. What else is new? It’s time to get caught up and get ready for another exciting week.

BBM for Android

We may be impatient users, but it's clear BlackBerry still has some work to do

It's hard not to lead off this week without talking about BlackBerry Messenger. BBM was supposed to land on Android on Saturday. Obviously, that didn't happen, and on Saturday night BlackBerry finally publicly explained what was going on.

Servers were crunched under the weight of what the company says was "more than 1.1 million active users in the first 8 hours." Not sure if that included the iPhone version — which did launch as planned on Saturday. But either way, that's doesn't bode well for how things might have gone even if the release had happened on schedule. If we're supposed to take BlackBerry seriously as a services company going forward and not for hardware — the company last week announced a nearly $1 billion loss and layoffs of 4,500 employees — the services will have to be bulletproof to even compete.

Obviously, they were not.

Focal camera app finds release on Google Play
Sep 22nd 2013, 16:45, by Phil Nickinson

Focal camera app

The past week saw a bit of drama come out of the launch of Cyanogen Inc., with the Focal camera app seemingly becoming a casualty when it was removed from the CM builds. It has, however, reappeared with a proper release in Google Play.

Labeled as a beta product, it's an improved (but not finished) release of the open-source camera app that sports just about every feature you could want in a smartphone camera. Photos, video, filters, controls, panorama — even its own version of PhotoSpheres. Some features work better than others at this point, but it's good to see work continuing.

You can download for free at the link above.

Who is AndroidPIT.COM? Edwin Kee, King of Updates and Exploding Phones
Sep 22nd 2013, 15:00, by Loie Favre

Last week we introduced you to our Canadian Editor Sterling Keys from the Great White North. Now lets hop on an Android plane and fly to Malaysia to meet our AndroidPIT ''veteran,'' Edwin Kee, who has been around these AndroidPIT parts for quite some time. You can thank Edwin for bringing the joyous Android firmware update news that you all crave to hear, as well as some gruesome stories (I'm not even sure how many) of people accidentally dying from smartphone related accidents or miraculous live-saving events thanks to smartphones. You can't live with them and you can't live without them.
