Focal camera app arrives in Play Store following CyanogenMod departure
Sep 22nd 2013, 12:05, by Robert Nelson

The Focal camera app was unveiled back in late-July as something called Phase 1 of Nemesis. This was something from CyanogenMod and was basically the start of what would be some overall improvements and changes. Anyway, the Focal camera app was released at the time and came available as part of some of the CM nightly builds and also as an apk file for sideloading.

Details of the app had gone relatively quiet after that initial release, however the app remained available. The Focal app was a bit buggy and certainly had some issues, but then again, it was always said to have been an early release. Flash forward till last week when we saw the news of Cyanogen Inc.

That had CyanogenMod forming into a company and one of the side effects was the removal of Focal. While there is likely more to the story, we did see a bit of why it was removed. Despite Focal being buggy and having some issues, it was an app that had quite a bit of potential.

Anyway, the app was removed from CyanogenMod and we were hoping to see it arrive in the Play Store for all to download, check out and maybe even use. That has since happened. The Focal camera app has been listed in the Play Store and it is available for free. The app is listed as a beta and brings support for devices running Android 4.2 or later.

We had been using the earlier version and since this Play Store release we deleted that older version and began playing with this. Bottom line here, the app is still a bit buggy and still has some issues, but we do feel the app has some potential and while it may not be ready for everyone just yet, it is one that you may want to keep an eye on for the future.

BBM for Android release plans put on hold
Sep 22nd 2013, 11:44, by Robert Nelson

BBM for Android was scheduled for release yesterday. Of course, those who had been waiting for the app to arrive in the Play Store saw the day come and go without that happening. Instead what we received from the folks at BlackBerry was news about why the release plans had to be put on hold.

The simple version here, BlackBerry blamed the lack of BBM for Android release on the leaked app. They said that more than 1.1 million users installed and began using that leaked app in the first 8 hours. And as a result, the unreleased version of BBM for Android “caused issues.”

At this point there isn’t any new timeline as to when BBM will arrive in the Play Store. BlackBerry has said they are going to “continue to work around the clock to bring BBM to Android” but also went on to say that will happen “only when it's ready and we know it will live up to your expectations of BBM.” Bottom line here, the global release of BBM for Android has been put on hold.

Furthermore, the leaked version of BBM for Android is going to be disabled. Looking forward, BlackBerry has said that as soon as they are able, they will release BBM for Android on a staggered country roll-out. They have also referred those waiting to either pay attention to the @BBM Twitter account or the www.BBM.com website to know when the official app drops.

Needless to say, we here at Android Community will be paying attention and will let you know when the app is available in the Play Store. And in the meantime, avoid those fakes that are currently available.
