Seidio 4500mAh battery for Galaxy Note 2

A little extra bulk gives you a big boost in battery life

The Galaxy Note 2 already packs a pretty sizeable battery, but one of the perks of having a removable cell is the option to upgrade it for a larger one. Whether you're looking for just that extra bit of capacity or want to have a spare for a day when you know you're going to drain the phone, Seidio is offering a 4500mAh replacement that offers extra juice for those who want it.

Hang around after the break to see a few impressions of this extended battery and see how it effects the usability of a device that is already quite large.

HTC Zara to be launched as the HTC Desire 601
Sep 1st 2013, 13:43, by Ankit Banerjee

htc zara evleaks

The HTC Zara has been making the rounds of the rumor mill for quite a while now, following a report that indicated that HTC would be releasing a few mid-range smartphones in Q4 of this year, along with the highly-anticipated HTC One Max. EvLeaks, who last month leaked the specifications and an alleged press shot of the upcoming mid-ranger, has now leaked what the product release name of the device is going to be.

HTC Zara will ship as the Desire 601

— @evleaks (@evleaks) August 30, 2013

According to the previous leak, the HTC Desire 601, which makes it the next iteration of the already available Desire 600, is expected to feature specifications that include a dual-core Qualcomm 400 processor, a 4.5-inch qHD display, 1GB or RAM, 8GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD card, an 8MP camera, and a 2,100 mAh battery. The software is Android 4.3 with a newer UI overlay, HTC Sense 5.5, on top.

Along with the rumored HTC Zara Mini that showed up in leaked images a few days ago, we’re up to three new smartphones from HTC to look forward to, with all three devices slated for an announcement later this month. Of course, it’ll be amazing to see any/all of these devices show up at IFA 2013 that is beginning this week, but with Sony and Samsung both vying for the spotlight, a later announcement by HTC might be a better idea.

What are your thoughts? Will you be picking up the HTC Desire 601 when it is released?

India Monthly News Roundup – August 2013
Sep 1st 2013, 12:56, by Ankit Banerjee

mnri feature

The entire tech world is currently focused on the upcoming IFA 2013 event, and even more so, the pre-IFA launch events by Samsung and Sony, that will see the official introductions of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, and the Sony Xperia Z1. With a slew of amazing devices on its way, August 2013 has been a relatively quiet month in most markets around the world.

I say relatively, because in India, we still had three major smartphone, and two major tablet, launches in the last month. Along with a host of special buyback schemes, network carrier news, Android app updates, and the current market share numbers in India, we have a lot to talk about. Let’s get started!

Smartphone News

iBall Andi 5h Quadro launched for Rs 10,999

iball andi 5h quadro

The month began with the announcement of yet another smartphone joining the iBall Andi series, with the latest offering, the Andi 5h Quadro, certainly being one of the most impressive of the lot, featuring some great specs at a more than decent price. Here’s a quick look at the specifications of the iBall Andi 5h Quadro -

  • 5-inch IPS display with 960×540 resolution
  • 1.2Ghz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 4GB internal storage (Approx. 2GB available to user), expandable via microSD up to 32GB
  • 12MP rear camera with dual LED flash, 2MP front camera
  • 2,200 mAh battery
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

While these specifications are increasingly becoming standard fare from Indian manufacturers, one of the selling points of the iBall Andi 5h Quadro is its price, available for only Rs 10,999 from online retailer Flipkart and Snapdeal.  That being said, the official iBall page shows an MRP of Rs 15,999, so online stores are offering the device at a significantly lower price.

Xolo Q1000S now available for Rs 18,999

xolo q1000s

Xolo is known for releasing smartphones that not only compete against releases from other local manufacturers, but also hopes to take on similar devices from international OEMs as well. The company seems to have done that again with the Xolo Q1000S, which, on paper, is quite an amazing device. First, let’s take a look at the specifications at the latest smartphone from Xolo -

  • 5-inch IPS display with 1280×720 resolution, using OGS (One Glass Solution) technology
  • 1.5 Ghz quad-core Mediatek processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB internal storage
  • 13MP rear camera with BSI 2 sensor, 5MP front camera
  • 2,500 mAh battery
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

Xolo manages to pack some great internal hardware, including an impressive camera and a large battery into a sleek and stylish body which is only 6.98mm thick. The 13 MP Camera is capable of recording 1080p videos and can capture clear images even when the camera is shaking using image stabilization technology, and includes other features features such as scene detection and tuning, high dynamic range (HDR), low light enhancement, face recognition, panorama capture, geo tagging, and a burst mode.

As you can see, the Xolo Q1000S is an amazing device at its price point of Rs 18,999. You can find out more about the device here, and even pick it up from online retailers Flipkart here.

Micromax releases Canvas Doodle 2, a 5.7-inch stylus-toting smartphone

micromax canvas doodle 2

Xolo isn’t the only company that is looking to take own popular international device manufacturers, with Micromax gunning for the Samsung Galaxy Mega series with its latest offering, the Micromax Canvas Doodle 2. Here’s a quick look at the specifications of the device -

  • 5.7-inch IPS display with 1280×720 resolution
  • 1.2Ghz quad-core processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB internal storage (12.6GB user-available)
  • 12MP rear camera with dual LED flash, 5MP front camera
  • 2,600 mAh battery
  • dual-SIM support
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

Micromax has also upped its game as far as design aesthetics are concerned, with the Canvas Doodle 2 featuring a full aluminium body, except for a small plastic cover for the dual SIM slots. Unfortunately, this new design also means that the battery is non-removable, and for the first time, a Micromax smartphone doesn’t feature expandable memory. Of course, the device does feature a stylus that pairs perfectly with the pre-installed M! Doodle app, and also included in the box is a flip cover, which can also be used as a kickstand.

The Micromax Canvas Doodle 2 is currently available for Rs 18,900 from Flipkart, and Rs 19,200 from Snapdeal, which is priced perfectly to take on the more expensive Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8, which also features comparatively inferior specifications.

Dual-SIM HTC One now available in India

HTC One

After releasing in China, the Dual-SIM version of the HTC One has now popped up in India as well, which is a good move on the part of the company, considering how popular the availability of a dual-SIM feature is in the country. The dual-SIM version also features expandable memory, which is also a big plus. Unfortunately, due to current foreign exchange rates, this version of the smartphone is significantly more expensive than the single-SIM version, which is currently available for Rs 40,622. The Dual-SIM HTC One is available from online retailers Flipkart for Rs 46,257.

Apart from the Dual-SIM feature and the inclusion of microSD expansion, all other specifications of the device remain unchanged, which include a 4.7-inch display with 1080p resolution, 1.7Ghz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, 4MP “Ultrapixel” camera, 2.1MP front camera, 2,300 mAh battery, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean on-board.

To see if the HTC One is the right device for you, don’t forget to check out our detailed review of the (Single-SIM version) smartphone here -

Buyback schemes roundup

LG Optimus G Pro aa 600px 3

HTC is offering a buyback scheme on its Desire series of phones, with a larger focus on the affordable HTC Desire X and Desire U. Under this offer, exchanging your old phone will get you up to  Rs 2,500 off on either of the devices. This buyback offer effectively brings down the price of the HTC Desire X from Rs 16,790 to Rs 14,280, from Rs 14,390 to Rs 11,890 for the Desire U.

Sony has also introduced a buyback scheme for its current flagships, the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL. Once again, exchanging your old smartphone will get you a minimum rebate of Rs 5,000, bringing down the price of the devices to Rs 33,790 (Xperia Z) and Rs 30,690 (Xperia ZL). Any new purchases will also include for free a case for the Xperia Z worth Rs 1,990, and a snap-on cover for the Xperia ZL worth Rs 1,490.

Finally, LG has also jumped on the buyback scheme bandwagon, by offering up to Rs 7,000 off on the LG Optimus G Pro, in exchange for your old smartphone. This offer will bring down the price of the Optimus G Pro to Rs 32,999.

Xolo announces software updates for the X1000, A800, and X900

xolo x1000

Xolo has announced software updates for a few of its older smartphones, including the A800, X900, and X1000. The X1000, which boasts a 2Ghz Intel processor, was released back in March with Android 4.0 ICS on-board. The company promised an upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which is finally available for the device now. The 208MB upgrade, which will be available OTA, introduces a host of performance improvements. Along with the X1000, the Xolo A800 will also receive an upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Another older Intel-powered smartphone, the Xolo X900, which was still running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, will finally receive an upgrade to Android 4.0 ICS. In this case, the update will be available via USB, that is, by plugging your device in to your PC.

The Xolo Q600 and Q700, which had released with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean on-board, have also received minor software updates for performance enhancements.

LG G Pad 8.3 gets official with 1920 x 1200 display and Android 4.2.2
Sep 1st 2013, 11:28, by Robert Nelson

Early details of the LG G Pad 8.3 had been a mix of official and rumor. There had been some leaks and speculation and there was also some teasing coming direct from LG. And while the official unveiling was expected during IFA, LG has offered a surprise announcement ahead of the show. Simply put, LG has announced the G Pad 8.3 and has said the tablet will be available in “key markets” during the fourth quarter of the year.

bothgaoa-530x500

They have yet to specify each and every market that will see the tablet, however it will be coming to those in North America, Europe and Asia. So far pricing has yet to be announced, but we suspect that will be made clear closer to the actual release. Or for that matter, we suspect some price related leaks will appear in the not to distant future. Anyway, that all aside, how about we get into the specs which include an 8.3-inch display at 1920 x 1200 (273 ppi) and a quad-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor.

Otherwise, the tablet will also have 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage space, a 4600 mAh battery and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. The camera setup will include a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera and 5 megapixel rear-facing camera. Remaining hardware points have the tablet arriving in both black and white and with measurements or 216.8 x 126.5 x 8.3mm and a weight of 338 grams.

As we have been seeing with LG smartphones lately, they are pushing the G Pad 8.3 tablet with some of the “premium” features of the G Series devices. In the case of the G Pad 8.3 that means goodies such as KnockON which turns the tablet on by tapping the display two times. Other goodies here include QSlide which allows the user to control up to three apps in one window and Slide Aside which deals with multitasking.

lg-g-pad-01 lg-g-pad-03 lg-g-pad-02

Slide Aside is described as allowing the user to slide currently open apps off to the side using a three-finger swipe gesture. Anyway, while the announcement has been made and the specs have been shared we expect this is not going to be the last we hear from LG on the G Pad 8.3. In fact, we suspect they will have the tablet on-display next week during IFA.

LG G Pad 8.3 officially unveiled, to be available starting October
Sep 1st 2013, 09:50, by Bogdan Petrovan

lg g pad 8 3 press (1)

That was fast – after on Monday, LG published a quick teaser video for the upcoming LG G Pad 8.3, today the device is official.

The G Pad 8.3 is according to its maker the first 8-inch tablet to offer a Full HD display. More precisely, we're looking at a 1920 x 1200 WUXGA (Widescreen Ultra Extended Graphics Array) LCD display that clocks in at a pixel density of 273 ppi, which is great, but slightly lower than that of the G Pad's direct competitor, the Nexus 7 (2013).

Powering everything is a Snapdragon 600 processor, along with 2GB of RAM. LG put a 4,600mAh battery inside the G Pad 8.3, which is impressively thin, at 8.3mm. Speaking of dimensions, the G Pad weighs 338 grams. A 5MP main camera and a 1.3MP front one complete the LG G Pad 8.3 spec sheet.

lg g pad 8 3 press (2)

The G Pad 8.3 will run Android 4.2.2 at launch, with the Optimus UI overlay on top and some of the new software features that LG introduced on the G2 smartphone. Users will be able to wake up the G Pad with two light taps using the KnockOn feature, just like on the G2. Other notable software features include the QSlide multitasking, which allows three apps to run at the same time on the screen, and Slide Aside, a way to switch between apps using a three-finger swipe.

Users of the LG G2 will get to pair with the G Pad 8.3 to receive messages and notifications right on the tablet and even "send simple replies".

In the press release below, LG announces that the G Pad 8.3 will officially be introduced at IFA next week. We'll be there for some hands-on time with the G Pad and to bring you our first impressions.

The G Pad 8.3 will hit markets in North America, Europe, and Asia, starting in Q4 2013, or as soon as October. There's no official word on pricing yet, but we do hope  that the G Pad will be price competitive with the Nexus 7 (2013) and other Android tablets in its class.

SEOUL, Sep. 1, 2013 — LG Electronics (LG) today announced the LG G Pad 8.3 tablet, the latest addition to its G Series lineup of premium mobile devices. The all-new LG G Pad 8.3 boasts the first Full HD display on an 8-inch class tablet, a unique user-experience and wide range of connectivity features. Set to officially debut next week at the IFA 2013 trade show in Berlin, the LG G Pad 8.3 builds on the recent launch of the LG G2 superphone, reinforcing LG's commitment to leadership in advanced mobile devices through its premium G Series products.

"Complementing our G Series smartphones, the introduction of the LG G Pad 8.3 further strengthens LG's premium lineup consisting of our most cutting-edge devices," said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. "Our G Pad is just another example of LG delivering devices with the unique selling points consumers around the world will appreciate."

Pocket-Sized Portability with Powerful Battery

Despite its large display, the LG G Pad 8.3 features a slim and sleek form factor that is comfortable enough to hold in one hand. Such compact portability is based on LG's learning from consumers regarding the optimum size of a tablet. While maintaining its portability, the LG G Pad 8.3 squeezes in a powerful 4600mAh battery for long-lasting usage time but is still as light as a newspaper at just 338g.

First Full HD Display Tablet in 8-inch Class

Incorporating a key attribute of other premium G Series devices including the G Pro and G2 smartphones, the LG G Pad 8.3 is the first 8-inch class tablet to offer a Full HD display. The G Pad is equipped with a 1920 x 1200 WUXGA (Widescreen Ultra Extended Graphics Array) display capable of delivering picture quality with even higher resolution than a standard Full HD display. In addition, the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 600 Processor with 1.7GHz Quad-Core CPU enhances the viewing experience with powerful performance as users will be able to enjoy Full HD content without any compromise.

True Convergence Experience with QPair

The LG G Pad 8.3 meets the demanding requirements of the convergence age by improving connectivity between multiple devices. With the unique QPair app, every call and message received on a smartphone will appear on the G Pad for a true convergence experience. Users can then send simple replies through the LG G Pad 8.3. QPair also allows the G Pad to easily connect to other manufacturers' smartphone and tablets (Jelly Bean OS recommended). Notes created on the G Pad's QMemo can be seamlessly saved into users' smartphones and shared from either device.

User Experience Maximized for a Tablet

The LG G Pad 8.3 offers practical features that provide real-life benefits, such as enhanced multitasking. Thanks to its 8.3-inch Full HD Display, user experience (UX) features unique to the LG G Pad 8.3 are maximized for the large screen:

  1. Slide Aside enables seamless multitasking by simply "sliding" currently open apps off to the side using a three-finger swipe
  2. QSlide controls up to three different apps in one window with no interruption, especially convenient on a large screen
  3. KnockON turns the device on and off by tapping the display twice

The LG G Pad 8.3 will be rolled out globally in key markets including North America, Europe and Asia as well as other regions starting in the fourth quarter of 2013. Prices will be announced at launch time.

The 9 best NFL apps for Android of 2013
Sep 1st 2013, 05:52, by Joe Hindy

Best NFL Apps

It’s football season! The 94th season of the NFL is about to kick off here in a few days the most beloved sport in the United States will be back until January. That means those of us who are football fans will be looking for apps to put on our Android phones to keep us up on the latest events, check scores, play some games, and even look over our fantasy football league. So let’s check out the best football apps for Android. If you’d rather watch than read, the video is at the bottom.

09 NFL Mobile

09 NFL Mobile

Of course the first on our list today is the official app of the NFL, called NFL Mobile. This app contains pretty much everything an NFL fan needs for a full season. This includes news, NFL.com fantasy, schedules, standings, and even a shop for merchandise and tickets.

It's a solid app and a good all-in-one solution for your NFL needs. The news is only from NFL.com so you don't get opinions from bloggers around the league. Also, some of the functionality, like watching live games, is limited only to Verizon Wireless customers. So you can only get its true value if you subscribe to big red. If this what you want, click the Google Play button below.

Get it on Google Play

The Score

08 The Score

Next up is the official app for The Score. The Score is known as a reliable source of sports news and even though their official app covers all sports, they're still a great option for football fans. You can look at scores, standings, league leaders in various categories, and schedules.

This is actually a very well done app. It's very clean and easy to use so if you don't want something complicated, this is a great option. Also, a big plus is that this covers other sports as well so if you're not just a football fan, you can find news from other sports. Use the Google Play button below to download it.

Get it on Google Play

ScoreCenter by ESPN

07 ScoreCenter by ESPN

ScoreCenter is number 7 and if you're a fan of ESPN, this is the app you're looking for. It's a well done app that delivers scores and news from all sports, including NFL and NCAA football. You can find scores, schedules, standings, and all the news you need to keep up to date.

The only downside is you have to create an account to get all the fun customization features. You can assign a favorite sport, a favorite team, and even add notifications for those things if you want them. It's a great app on its own, but it's much better if you feel like taking the time to sign up. If you want to check it out, use the Google Play button below.

Get it on Google Play

NFL Matchups

06 NFL Matchups

Number 6 on our list is called NFL Matchups and it's the first game on our list. If you need to kill a few minutes between quarters or commercials, then this could be a fun little app for you. It's essentially a simulation game with a few mini games to make your team better.

The game requires Facebook login, which we know isn't a great feature to have anymore. Also, it's a little cheesy in terms of content and graphics. So it's not the best game ever made. That said, if you just need something to kill a few minutes, it's not that bad. To play, click the Google Play button below.

Get it on Google Play

College Football Scoreboard

05 College Football Scoreboard

For most, football is football but we know there are some people who enjoy college football more. Number 5 on our list are for those people and it's called College Football Scoreboard. As you can imagine, it's an app that revolves around college football.

The app contains pretty much everything you need for an NCAA season. This includes news from a number of sources, standings, scores, and more for over a dozen conferences in multiple divisions. The schedules haven't been updated for the 2013 season yet, but the news has been so we assume an update is coming soon. If you want to try it out, the download button is below.

Get it on Google Play

Yahoo! Fantasy Sports Football

04 Yahoo! Fantasy Sports Football

Yahoo! is known for having one of the best fantasy sports platforms available and clocking in at number 4 is their fantasy football app. As you can imagine, it allows you to have complete control over your teams in multiple leagues so you don't need a computer to play fantasy football.

Using this app, you can create or join a league, join a mock draft or the actual draft for your league, and pretty much everything else you need to do in a fantasy league. There is also access to a fantasy oriented football blog. If you plan on doing fantasy football on Yahoo! this season, this app is a must have. Do note, it only supports Yahoo! fantasy sports, not ESPN or NFL.com. If you want it, click the Google Play button below.

Get it on Google Play

NFL Kicker

03 NFL Kicker

The first in our top 3 is another game called NFL Kicker 13. In this simple game, you'll create a simple character and kick field goals. The premise of NFL Kicker 13 is very simple and it doesn't take long to master, so if you need something more in depth, you won't find it here.

As stated the game doesn't take long to figure out. This is a great little game you can use to get through some commercials or any other time you want to kill a few minutes with some football. The controls are easy, the graphics aren't terrible, and it's free. Can't ask for much more than that. If this seems up your alley, download it using the button below.

Get it on Google Play

NFL Pro 2013 NFL Pro 2014

02 NFL Pro 2013 and NFL Pro 2014

Number 2 on our list is far and wide the best football game for mobile devices. Currently, your only option is NFL Pro 13 by Gameloft, but as we reported last week, NFL Pro 14 is well on its way. The good news is both games are free so you're not losing out on anything to play one while you wait for the other.

The graphics and gameplay were surprisingly good for a mobile device and that's probably why people like this game so much. The controls take some getting used to but that's pretty much how it works for all video games. If you need a football game to keep you busy during the week, this is a great one to have. If you want NFL Pro 2014, you’ll have to wait a little longer, but you can pick up 2013 using the button below.

Get it on Google Play

NFL Trash Talk

01 NFL Trash Talk

Here it is, our number 1 rated app for football and it's NFL Trash Talk. As you can imagine, trash talking is practically a pastime when it comes to sports and now there is an app where you can let out the rage during a game. For people who get vocal during games, this app can be a great way to let off some steam.

This app is actually really fun. Upon opening you're asked to select your favorite team. You're then connected to two chat rooms. One is a private chat for just fans of your favorite team. The other is a chatroom you share with fans of the team your team faces that week. It's a great way to communicate with fellow football fans and trash talk the other guys. If you’re ready to start trash talking, use the button below.

If you check out the leaderboard you can see how these apps stack up against one another. As per the norm, this is how you rated them, not us. You'll find no bias here. If you want to try these apps out, the links are in the video description.

This list has all the essentials for an NFL or NCAA fan. You can find news, standings, scores, chatrooms with other fans, and even games. So it was hard to put a value on them since most of them do different things. For best results, we recommend downloading a few to get the full experience. If there's a great app we missed, let us know in the comments.
